The newer ASUS FX505 fixes the problems I had with the FX504 in the video, you can find my review here: ua-cam.com/video/jqvSZifr_Is/v-deo.html
For troubleshooting power limit and stuttering issues with the FX504, refer to this comment: ua-cam.com/video/11BFyWZGDq4/v-deo.html&lc=UgyT2H5dHhoulTw__FN4AaABAg
Should I return the FX504 i7 version and buy a FX505 i5 version or should I go for the ROG Strix GL503. Both are basically the same price.
my friend is dropping so much frames and I don't know how to help him fix power limit throttling, nothing is working and he has the asus tuf fx504ge that has i5 8300h and 1050 ti
Gavin Chan i have the same problem man 😭😭 i7 gtx1050 16 ram I think it is power problem or something with charging adapter if i find a solution i will write it here

i want to ask a question off the topic ...usually my laptop is on for 15-20 hours a day with power plugged in all the time , will it affect my laptop battery if i am not using my laptop on battery ?
No, I've left my work laptop on 24/7 during week days for almost 3 years and the battery is still fine. The battery gets degraded by going through discharge/recharge cycles.
so no problem using laptop on power plugged in all the time?
No, that's the ideal way to use it. You'll lose performance and degrade the battery faster by constantly using it.
thanx man you are the best
No problem!
How would u suggest this laptop for video editing? I am thinking about the i5 edition with 1050 2GB
I would say it would be pretty decent, but difficult to know for sure if the 8300H will have the same power limit throttling issues I experienced here. The i5-8300H is pretty nice, I recently compared it to last generations 7700HQ and it was around 10% better in all tasks, so should be pretty good for a video editing laptop.
Jarrod'sTech www.pcworld.com/article/3270625/laptop-computers/intel-8th-gen-core-i7-vs-7th-gen-core-i7-cpus-should-you-upgrade.amp.html
I’m getting this i78750H for audio production/editing (pro tools 10, 11 and NI’s Maschine). 6 cores is nice for that reason. The throttling may not be an issue for what I’m using it for and may help preserve it. I may post my results. Good review/video👍🏼😎
Go for i5 gtx1050ti 4gb
@@JarrodsTech i so read that in your voice
A very well made review. the hard work behind this video is obvious.
Thanks!
Can you make a video where you talk about how to take care of a laptop. How to clean. How to properly charge. When to use the charger. How to maintain the longevity
nice idea
That is a great idea! Lots of people really don't fully understand. Mostly because the focus seems to be on the specs, and the initial purchase. And Jarrod is very experienced with laptops, and I'm certain that his knowledge in this area, far outstrips mine.
I'm sure when he wakes up and checks, you'll get a heart!
Matt Christie lol thanks man. And yeah exactly. Like we have all this info on how to get the best laptop. But nothing on how to maintain one.
Yeah that's a good idea, a few people have asked some questions on this and I've just been replying on a case by case basis, but a video would be a good idea. I've added it to my todo list, although that's quite bit at the moment haha, I have a pile of 7 laptops here to work through 😛
Jarrod'sTech lol keep on grinding man. Once you get to it. Please make it. I know you'll make a detailed video. Amazing content man! Keep it up. Btw. Can you do a comparison video on G5. And also talk about the backlighting
I'm planning to buy a new laptop for Christmas and I love how detailed your reviews are! Keep making more reviews man. You definitely deserve more subscribers
Thanks! I'll do my best! Hope you like the new laptop when you get it 😀

Hye i wanna ask does the anti dust cooling turn it on by itself when we open d laptop or manually?. I got the hotkey f5 for fan smhow it wont wont.doesnt even show a notification
Not sure on the anti dust thing, I think the F5 fan button just lets you swap between fan speeds, for instance going to overboost which results in the fan running faster to improve cooling when under load.
is there any lancher i can use ? to make my games faster ? or put it on gaming mode something like that ?
Such a thorough review. Very balanced. I subscribed...👍🏻
This was the most thorough and honest review. Thanks man🙏🏿Earned my sub
Cheers, welcome to the channel!
Great video, Jarrod you really covered all the essentials of a great review, I really appreciate giving benchmarks of multiple games. Really loved it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Sidharth!
i'm an architecture student and i need a laptop for arch programs (3max-revit....) wich demands a powerful processor cause there is a lots of rendering so i thought of this laptop cause it has 8 generation i7 processor but are you saying that it doesn't work properly ??
and do i need a gaming laptop or just any laptop with 8 gen i7 processor would be good for programs that need a lots of rendering .
Yeah it doesn't get the full amount of power so doesn't perform as it should, I'd suggest anything else over this laptop. The newer FX505 fixes the issue. Anything with 1060 graphics / i7-8750H should be great for those tasks I think.
Another great review as usual! Seems like a decent laptop, only wish the budget gaming machines moved away from the whole black and red theme. Just looks a bit tacky imo.
Cheers! You wouldn't know it's a gaming laptop if it wasn't for the black and red colour scheme though 😉 to be fair it does seem to be available in all black, though it seems to vary between regions.

Pio Soesetio I have my CPU undervolted by 100 mV
How much did you undervolt your CPU and GPU?
As for cpu,
cache = -135 mV and
cpu core = -360 mV
Yea, ik the cpu core undervolt is low but it works fine and as far as I've monitored it, didn't see any drop in performace and frequency.
the cache can actually be pushed to -150 mV but it runs unstable and the laptop would freeze after a long stress test.
As for gpu, you can check the voltage/frequency graph on the link up there.
Pio Soesetio im planning on using your settings but im a little concern about the cpu core undervolt being so low, how is it now???? Sorry if my english is bad :3
It's running fine, never crashed on games or other things. You can keep it higher if u want. You don't need to copy it, results can vary even though it's the same machine.
I need your help I have the same laptop it's not giving me as much performance as it giving me before my fps drop very low in every game. The game I have played in ultra settings but now I can't play in lowest plz help me.
Plz i need a quick answer does i58300h model with 8g of ram and gtx1060 3gvram perform better than that or what you 🤔
No, the CPU and GPU are both lower than this, so I'd expect it to perform lower.
Hi thanks for the informative review
Im looking at buying this laptop to play some Fifa and mostly for work what do your feel
Thanks
It will probably go ok that game doesn't need much to play.
Jarrod'sTech thanks
Did they every fix the CPU power throttling on this Laptop?
Not sure, but I doubt it, they can't, the power brick is too small and heatpipes not adequate enough to support higher limits.
So how to fix the power limit on fx504 bro ? My fx504 always stuck at 25w tdp. Not running max clock speed! And i dont know what to do now. So sad :(
It can't be fixed, they cap it due to the poor cooling and small power brick, if they have changed it though best bet would be to update to latest bios version incase they did raise it, otherwise the best option to get some performance back is undervolting the CPU, here's a guide: ua-cam.com/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/v-deo.html
Just got mine I'm actually happy with it, I will admit it can be a bit loud but I can't tell Cuomo have speakers and I'm usually in game mode but it's a decent laptop and no overheating or stuttering what so ever so far
Good to hear you're not having any problems with it! I just got the newer fx505 for review, so will have some info on how they one compares coming in tomorrow's video 😀
ASUS TUF FX504GD - ES51 has i5-8300H and GTX 1050, had 8GB memory but added another 8GB for Dual Channel 16GB, also cloned Windows 10 from terrible slow FireCuda hybrid HDD to a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD. The Touchpad is glitchy as sometimes the Cursor would not move and had to try again. Sensitivity adjustment settings did nothing. This had the 60Hz TN panel display, at angle views it was terrible as picture fades/ color washed out. But making the upgrades to memory from 8GB to 16GB and r&r the HDD with a SSD was worth it , seeing much improvement in performance. Under Voltage the CPU. Not necessary as does little for FPS in games but in Benchmarks you get higher scores. ThrottleStop and XTU don't bother. Go to windows Panel Control and into Power Options, set for High Performance profile. The i5-8300H will run constant at 3.9GHz or Turbo speed. However, when you run a game or program/ app that places a heavy work load, use the Keyboard and change the FAN Speed Setting from Quiet, Normal and Fast to Fast. Yes! it will be loud and you will feel the heat blowing out the exhaust ports. Your games and apps will run smooth, but if running a Benchmark your score will be just below average from those you see posted in reviews. Reason, different GPU driver, older BIOS version, Benchmark version not the same, or the configuration of the tested laptop in the review is different than yours. You have i5 and they have i7 or both have i7 but the GPU one having GTX 1050 other GTX 1050Ti or GTX 1060. Results are for comparison only. Back to the Under volting of -120mv or -125mv or -135 mv. Before using XTU or ThrottleStop, you had gone into BIOS and select DEFAULT, Save and Exit, then windows Control Panel in Power Options select Balance. Run app such as HWinfo64 and CineBench R15 or Cinebench R20 in Multi core. You should see in HWinfo64 that PL1 is running about 39W to 41W with 45W being maximum and PL2 should read 80W. (Normally in Idle, PL1 = 28W and PL= 45W). If you want to Undervolt then try it, but with the ASUS 2018 models why bother at all. Now if you Idle Temperature are high and run hot all the time. Recommend disassembly as taking bottom cover off and renewing the Thermal paste on the GPU and CPU using Arctic MX-4 or Kryonaut Thermal paste / compound. Never ever use Thermal Pads. Watch a few UA-cam videos if you are not acquainted how to remove bottom panel cover and remove copper heat sink assembly to get to the GPU and CPU.
Help please, when ever I turn on my fx504, my screen shows ether a smart status bad or a black screen
Have you made any recent changes to it?
Do you know how I can fix some lag/stuttering issues in games like Hell Let Loose or Arma 3? Also any tips to increase FPS or how to set up this laptop? Also do you know how I could upgrade the RAM because I have been thinking of upgrading mine from 16g, or any upgrades in general because I need it to be more powerful but I can’t find anything I could upgrade mine with.
Is your memory in single channel (1x stick)? If so, dual channel might help a bit. Otherwise the laptop is one of the worst I've ever tested in terms of random lag/stuttering, as I show in the video. All you can really do to help is make sure you have dual channel memory and maybe undervolt the CPU to get more out of it within its low power limit.
Hey, i have a question
This laptop and predator Helios 300 are both available at the same price in my country (both with i5 8300h and gtx 1050ti variant)
Both have almost same specs and I'm quite confused between the two.
which one is preferable?
I'd definitely go the Helios 300, I am testing the new one at the moment (videos up soon) and it doesn't have the stuttering issue I showed here that was also reported by others.
@@JarrodsTech thanks for such an early reply man, I'll go with the Helios
No problem, cool hope you like it!
helios 300 no doubt---it has been in market for maybe 2 years and works great---new 8th gen i5 is just cherry on top
Go for tuf,by your name i guess you are indian and if you specially living in northern region where temp gets high as 47 celsius . Tuf has better cooling system than helios 300. Helios 300 will suffer from thermal throttling.
I feel like this is laptop has great specs for the price. However it could have achieved much more if it had better heat management
Eric Wei When I saw those tiny heatpipes, I was concerned that it wasn't enough for a 8750H, and indeed that explains why they limited the power to 25W
Teco01ejg the temperatures are really low though, so the problem isn't the heat management, it's the power management
Yeah the temperatures could definitely go higher, there was some room for that, just seems to be an issue with power limitations I think.
TabalugaDragon Everything is a cost cutting measure : cheaper mobo, cheaper power brick, cheaper heatsinks and a good CPU name for marketing purposes.
@@JarrodsTech can you do anything about it because i want to buy this laptop but i don't know if thatbwould be a smart move bec of the heat management
hi . my cpu temperature is around 70 / 80 degrees C .. when i m just surfing on the internet or watching movies .. and i think this is to hot ?! any idea someone ? i need some driver for the fan to do work properly ?
That's not too high, but yeah a bit warm for just doing those basic tasks. There's no sort of driver that should be required as far as I'm aware, if you open task manager what % CPU is in use while the temperatures are that high?
Can I use SSD Samsung Evo 970 NVMe M.2 for this laptop ...??
I find out that altering the fan speed with fn+f5 can break the 25W TDP limit for a while, upto more than 57W. Cinebench now scores 1266cb with 0.175V CPU undervolted. It can run constantly at around 3.87GHz in stress test.
Interesting, was that permanent or did you have to keep changing fan speeds?
It returns to the normal 25W after a while and I have to change the fan speeds again. Very strange.
Strange :/
Mark Paul Cards lol
@@AB-sg4xu doesn't really waste, still cheaper and better than i7-7700HQ I was going to buy last year, pay $180 more you get more heat pipe
Sad sad laptop that the voltage supplied isn't enough to produce playable experiences. I was really looking forward to how this laptop is in general, quite disappointing as they really didn't deliver what I thought they promised, I had high expectations for the laptop, i normal don't have high expectation for most things. Not really hating on asus as generally their products are top notch. But it's poor on their part that they let a laptop out of the box be under supplied. They can easily fix this in a bios update. Another great review Jarrod!
Thanks! Yeah was a little disappointing, it would otherwise be a pretty good option for the price.
Can it run the Photoshop CC 2018 and Illustrator smoothly at the same time? I'm planning to buy this on December.
Yeah should be fine those aren't really resource intensive continually in a way that would really make the power limit throttling an issue, in my opinion.
Does a 3200 dpi wired ergonomic red backlit gamein g mouse for pc and mouse pad redragon m601 ba gamein g essential combo work for this laptop

Hard to say for sure as I haven't tested it, I'm trying to get the new FX505 with 1060 so if I'm able to get it I'll discuss in that video, not sure if ASUS have the newer 1060 504 available for review though, honestly it really depends what they're able to send me, I just review what ever they are able to provide.

Probably, but honestly I recommend anything apart from this laptop due to the throttling issues, you can get better performance with the same specs in about any other machine.
I placed an onder before really checking the reviews as I thought it was a good deal . Thank the lord I managed to cancel in time
Phew! I have the newer FX505 here at the moment, hoping it fixes the issues!

@@JarrodsTech bios update? is it the same as driver update?
So i just bought my asus gl503vm.
It´s running a i5-7300hq and a 1060 3gb.
When i play for about 1,5 hours my fans get really loud and the Rog gaming center says that my cpu and gpu are about 90 degrees celsius.
Can anyone tell me if this is just because this laptop has bad thermals (maybe cuz of the 1060), or is there something wrong with my specific unit?
Is it actually thermal throttling, or you're just concerned about the temperatures?
Jarrod'sTech
So far i haven’t noticed any thermal throttling. But i’m worried that it might happen later. (So far i’ve only had the pc for 5 days). What i am most annoyed about tho, is actually the fans, and how insanely loud they get.
wow the mic sounds quite good .-. didnt expect that :/

I have an Xbox one s but I am thinking of getting this laptop with the gtx 1050, can it run games smoothly like just cause 2, nfs hot pursuit, black ops III, GTA IV and other older games at high fps?
The 1050 should play those games alright, however you can look up benchmarks of them running on similar specced laptops to get an idea of what to expect (not necessarily on this specific laptop, but the same specs should be enough to give you rough performance numbers).
Hey Jarrod , I own a FX504GM model of this series with 8750h chip and a gtx 1060 . I have noticed an issue that when the load is only cpu intensive there is no issue and processor runs at 45W+ TDP but as soon as my GPU gets loaded with more than 40% usage ...then my cpu is limited to just 25 W TDP . Any Idea how can this issue be resolved? Cinebench scores are around 1245 max and stabalizes around 1100
Yeah that just seems to be how it's designed to work. You may be able to get more performance out of the same amount of power by undervolting. Some people have said they upgrading to the latest bios helped them too, but as that came out after I sent the laptop back I can't do any further testing
So did the TDP limit issue solved during games?
Try using 180 watt power brick from another ASUS laptop.
I don't have any others at the moment, but I think the limit whether that be in BIOS/firmware or what ever would still be in effect.
pretty sure the plug changes size with the wattage
idont think that it worth it you could get 150 more and get the hellious 300
great reviews thanks 👍
Cheers! I suppose from Acer the Nitro 5 would probably be closer in specs compared to the Helios 300, I think that's available with 1050Ti, haven't tested it out yet myself though.
Except that the helios is hot AF. MSI with a 1070 runs cooler than the helios, albeit not by much.
@@JarrodsTech did you now?
I can get this for 799 right now is that worth it ?
Hi, I was looking for review for the laptop you introduced, and I want to ask you something. When you were testing with playing some games, did you turn all the options on?
What options? I just use the built in presets (eg low/medium/high/ultra), I click these and they change all the other settings automatically.
My computer after 3 months of playing rainbow six on my 504, I got a “S.M.A.R.T Status Bad, backup, replace Press F1 to continue” What is the cause of it?
SMART errors are related to hard drives, are there any issues with your storage? Maybe try find what the errors are, might be reported in Windows event viewer, or otherwise use a program to scan the drive for errors.
this 25W is pretty strange, asus is prob using "chitty" mobos with bad fets and bad power components.
I wouldnt buy it cuz the cpu power limit sucks
Yeah not too sure what the deal is with that, I'm just glad I was able to find other instances of that being the case online as I didn't want it to be just me.
His unit is probably faulty. Mine was also having 25W tdp but it was fixed after lending the laptop Asus' service center.
Rodrick HD I was thinking the same thing judging the fact that all the Io is on one side to lower the cost of manufacturing
Seems this is a common issue, I thinknill look elsewhere, the Dell G5 seems a good bet, similar specs, similar price.
Cheers.
or helios 300 by far best value for money
I have this laptop. It's not bad for students.
Yeah fair enough, I can see it being perfectly fine if you aren't stressing the CPU / doing CPU demanding workloads.
how is the trackpad of this. does it little bit loose. ??
On my model, it's very good. No trackpad issues. This laptop in my opinion is great for students who also love to game on the side.
Hey man, how's battery life? Taking notes VS UA-cam/Netflix VS light gaming?
@@jakepoirier2572 In my experience, battery life sucks. But that's common for gaming laptops. Taking notes can last you around 2 hours or slightly longer. While watching UA-cam however, I was only able to get at best 2 hours, with power saving on and display brightness at 30%. I don't really game while on battery. For the price, I think this laptop is pretty good. However, there are other models that are better for around the same price range.
I have the same labtop can u explain how to use it like...should I use it on battery while gaming or plugged in mode mostly I use balanced mode while gaming...wat do u perfer for perfect good ?
Always use it when plugged into wall power where possible, you'll get best performance and that way the battery won't constantly go through charge/discharge cycles which is what kills it over time. I also use overboost mode where possible, as it gives increased fan speed and performance
Jarrod'sTech yes the wall plugged in give very good performance thanks for the information buddy..n thanks again for the reply ❤️
Hi why my fx504, i7 8th generation, gtx1050ti model only have 60hz screen refresh rate. I saw the website have the same model with 120hz screen refresh rate.
It's available in different configurations, the newer 1060 model has the option of higher refresh rate panel. As noted here, the one you've got is only available with 1050 or 1050Ti with 60Hz display: www.asus.com/au/Laptops/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-FX504/specifications/
Avoid the FX504 series at all costs, this is the worst gaming laptop on the market right now. I own a FX504GE that comes with a core i7 8750H and a Nvidia 1050 Ti and it is underperforming too much, I cannot say if the core i5 will perform as bad, but, most likely it will. Either the core i5 or core i7 are 45 W parts, but, they are being limited to just 20 - 25 W meaning that you are paying extra for something that you can’t use at its full potential
For the model I own expect the CPU to power throttle when on high CPU loads as a result, the clock speed will be limited to the base speed of 2.2 GHz and turbo boost will not kick in even if it is enabled. So, for video editing, rendering, CAT simulations, etc. it will not perform as expected. You might be saying “this is a gaming computer, it is for gaming” well, it is a failure at that too. For the same CPU power limitation and clock speeds bouncing all over the place you will constantly have to cope with framedrops and stuttering in any game. To kind of solve the issue you will have to underbolt the CPU and GPU.
The worst part is that I contacted Asus on this regard and they have admitted there are some issues with the design and provided a ton of excuses on why it might be, but, are not willing to solve the problem. They suggest entering the PC to a service center for “fixing”, most likely they will change the motherboard or other components but most likely it will continue the same as there is no damage on the PC just a poor design. They will not provide a replacement computer either and if you bought the PC in other region you are screwed as their “international” warranty will not cover you on another region meaning you will have to ship the computer to wherever it was bought.
Save your money and look elsewhere.
Thanks for sharing your experience, seems similar to what I experienced and what I found while searching for others that had the same issue.
This is a complete disappointment, more than that, a ripoff.
Right now I'm in the crusade of posting my experience anywhere I can to prevent any other buyers potential from having the same experience I had.
Sadly Asus is not interested in this model and most likely will not care about the bad reviews.

Hey Great video.. have you ever tried liquid metal thermal compund? Would it help for this model?
Thanks! I don't think it would help here, as temperatures weren't an issue, the arbitrary power limit throttling was limiting the performance, and by extension the temperatures were under control. I'm also not able to test liquid metal myself in review units, if I remove the stock thermal paste when I send the laptop back after the review it will go to the next reviewer who will unknowingly report misleading thermal information because they didn't know it had been changed.
I see on asus's website that there was a bios update on july 5th that claims to improve system stability. Has anyone used this, and if so, did it fix the problem?
I'm not sure if it resolves the issue, I was testing with the 310 BIOS. It wasn't available on the website at the time, but it's the version that was reported to me when I checked as I mentioned in the video, I'm thinking it was installed on my unit before sent to me and before it was publicly available.
Greetings, I would like to ask a question. I just bought an Asus Tuf FX504. I don't know alot about laptops but it appears that my games ( even running on low settings ) seems to only run on 30 fps, even not so intensive graphic games like counter strike 1.6. Is there a problem with it?
Are you playing on battery power? By default Nvidia's battery boost (set through the GeForce Experience application) is set to 30 FPS in order to save battery power and make it run longer. You can extend this, or disable it. Otherwise if you're playing while plugged into the power and the battery fully charged I would expect better performance than that.
@@JarrodsTech Thank you so much, it runs better now. And is there also a way to increase the frames or is it capped to only 60 fps.
Ps: subbed :)
Ive been having problems with my Fx504 Hard freezing when it gets too hot. What are the ways I could improve the cooling on this drastically so I could prevent this from happening again?
You could try buying a cooling pad + boosting the fan speed or undervolting the CPU.
@@JarrodsTech Ive heard that cooling pads don't do too much in terms of cooling, but I'll look into the fan speed and undervolting stuff
Yeah I tested a cooling pad once here, only made a small difference: ua-cam.com/video/Zx2EnUD-DoM/v-deo.html
As for undervolting, I suggest this guide: ua-cam.com/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/v-deo.html
Hi, your review was awesome.
I wanna to buy it but I've a question. Can i use this laptop for engineer softwares like, Solidworks, AutoCAD, Catia, Ansys, Fluent and Abaqus?
Thank you
To be honest I'd look at any other machine except this due to the issues covered in the video.
Do you know where i can buy the upgrades online? The ram card and other stuff.
I just got into this kind of Computer and i would like to upgrade mine in the future.
I don't know what country you're in, where ever sells laptop parts, look for sodimm memory
So what was the fps in csgo? Because I need a new pc, mine right now is absolutely terrible so is purple line the fps you got?
I didn't save the frame rate data while just having a quick play because I use the standard benchmark so that other people can compare it by running the exact same test, seemed ok in my quick play, but you could always run the same benchmark on your machine and see what you get to get an idea of how that translates to here.
I got this laptop with the i7-8750H CPU and my performance numbers are nowhere near the ones displayed in your video, for example while playing fortnite i get 55 to 70 fps on medium, plus the laptop seems to have trouble even running some games. And by trouble I mean it is unplayable (for example, The Forest, Smite, The Witcher 3) which I can't understand cause it has the specs for it and Smite in particular I've ran on much worse setups. Any idea what might be wrong?
Fortnite in particular can't really be compared, depends too much on where on the map you are and what other players are doing. Try comparing with one of the built in benchmarks, as they will at least do the exact same benchmark run. That said I did note some pretty serious performance issues with this laptop in the video, some people have mentioned that the newer BIOS version improves these issues, so maybe try update BIOS?
@@JarrodsTech yeah I figured it out after a few hours, it didnt have intel drivers but some shitty 2006 microsoft driver. Didnt even think that could be an issue
would u recommend me this laptop for after effect and premiere for smooth using ? , power limiting seems preventing me with this . and if not , what would u recommend ? Thank you . i prefer lightweight
I probably wouldn't get it myself, especially in premiere when exporting it will smash the CPU so would take longer being throttled. The Acer Nitro 5 seems like a good option, I've also got the older FX503 here at the moment which I'm in the middle of testing so it will be interesting to see how that compares.
Jarrod'sTech acer nitro's quite heavy to me . Im looking forward to seeing ur New video soon with fx 503
Is it possible for it to handle VR? It was noted as a “VR Ready” laptop but I’m not sure how smooth the laptop can handle it
I doubt it. Technically the 1060 is minimum for VR, but based on the issues with this machine mentioned in the video I wouldn't expect it to do well.
Is screen bleeding for this laptop normal? Mine is screenbleeding but not that much but i still can see on high brightness, so what the solution? Appreciate all kind of answers , thanks
Some level of bleed is pretty standard in most laptops, not much you can do about it, some times it's caused by the bezel around the screen pinching the panel, I've heard of people reducing it by opening the screen and trying to remove this pressure, but that's only for the edges.
@@JarrodsTechDoes screenbleed get any worse over time or does it stay the same?
It stays the same as far as I know, haven't heard of it getting worse unless you somehow damage the panel.
Hi Jarrod, are you planning to review the Razer blade 15 gtx1970 fhd in the near future? Always found your reviews really helpful
Yeah I am! They should be sending it out this week 😁
The two red bars have very similar colours, which makes it hard to differentiate between the two. Great review Jarrod. It's funny that undervolting a laptop seems to have a similar effect as overvolting a desktop! (As far as performance goes) The ASUS TUF FX504 Gaming Laptop doesn't appear to live up to the "gaming" moniker. Something that's far too prevalent these days, with everything having "Gaming" attached to it. Maybe it's just me though! Have a great day!
Glad you didn't post last night, cause I would have lost even more sleep! LOL!
Thanks! Haha that's lucky, I scheduled it for 6am AEST so I was still asleep 😎
hey Jarrod love your content . i have a question in my country both the helios 300 and the tuf fx 504 are of same price(1100USD) the specs on both being i5 8300H GTX 1060 60hz panel . The only difference being that the helios 300 has 16 GB of 2444 RAM whereas tuf has 8GB RAM. As they are of same price which one would be the better choice .
Hey, thanks! I'd pick the Helios simply due to the throttling/stuttering issues that I experienced here, the fact that it has more memory is icing on the cake, Helios would be my pick.
Bro can we fix it now in 2020 by doing undervolt please reply btw love your video
Is this still worth it in 2022? I'm majoring in computer science and would most likely be carrying this all day so idk if the battery is enough😭
Im getting this laptop with a gtx 1050, i5 8300h, 8gb ram and 4gb vram however im coming from a crappy 920m laptop, will this be a noticeable change?
Depends on the game and the settings, generally the 1050 is ok with lower settings with most games. The 1050 is similar to a 960m if that helps.
Hi there, can you please confirm whether the i5 version of the fx504 is affected by the power throttling issue??
I can't unfortunately as I've never had it for testing, some others in the comments mentioned it still happened to them though, same 25W TDP limit.
Is the tuf 504 with a i5 8300h + 1060 worth it over the AMD version with ryzen 5 2500u and rx560? Thanks in advance for anyone who has the time to drop some knowledge on me.
Definitely, the 560x is closer to a 1050 in performance, and I show the difference between the i5-8300h and 2500u in my Acer nitro 5 review, the i5 wins. Even in this laptop where CPU performance is poor it's probably still better
Great video. Next time if you are making a comparison video or review, would it be good to test the boot times of the laptops?
Hmm not really sure to be honest, because it depends on a number of factors, different regions sell with different drives which will change it, and also if you have the Windows 10 fast boot option etc.
Jarrod'sTech fair enough
beautiful video and I was very helpful, thanks
No problem, cheers!
Can i upgrade 4gb Nvidia Graphics card to 6gb Nvidia Graphics card and 8GB Ram to 16GB Ram in my Asus Tuf Gaming FX504GD series ?
hi could someone advise if this laptop could run the oculus rift
Technically I think it meets the minimum requirements, but I'd be concerned the low power limit on the CPU would cause issues
Iam wondering to buy this laptop for photo editing and graphic design is it good for that kind of stuff and will fans be loud?
I would look elsewhere, this is one of the worst laptops I've tested, plus the screen is on the lower end side in terms of colour gamut which is not ideal for photo editing.
Hi Jarrod, I own this model, one question can I connect this laptop to an ASUS VG248QE using HDMI?
Hey, it's got a HDMI port on the left so should be fine. It's HDMI version 1.4 though, we can see the limits of this here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_standard_video
Looks like it's fine for 144Hz 1080p.
@@JarrodsTech Thank you Jarrod, pretty sure I saw a post at Tom's Hardware that the ASUS VG248QE Monitor has an HDMI 1.4 too so I guess it works!
Will you test the new fx505 when it is available? Will look forward to it hehe
I hope so, I requested it yesterday, just waiting for the ASUS team to get back to me and have a review unit available.
Hey can you change the colour of the backlit keyboard
Mine was red only and could not be changed.
So i’ve never had a gaming laptop or laptop so my question is; can you put pc discs into it?
No, it doesn't have a CD drive. You'd need to use an external USB CD drive, almost no modern laptops have that anymore so that's the only option.
Would this be a good laptop for streaming? I just want to use it for strictly streaming ps4 with obs or some sort of streaming software. Not to actually game with pc games.
I'd look elsewhere, streaming is a CPU intensive task and as mentioned in the video I had some problems with CPU throttling.
I'm trying to look for a gaming laptop and I was looking at the Asus TUF fx504 do you think I should buy this laptop or what other laptop do you recommend for the exact same price that's better
I'd probably look at the Dell G5, available with very similar specs at about same price point, but no power limit throttling issues on the CPU there. I have a review of it here if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/4soLNQWTulg/v-deo.html
Do you think this would be a good idea for music production ?
Hmm to be honest I didn't test using the headphone jack myself as I feel like I'm not good at judging what's good / it's too subjective, based on the specs though yeah in theory would go fine for that workload.
Thank you for responding my friend
No problem!
Hey Jarrod, could you compare this to the MSI GL63 8RC or make a review of it?
Maybe, depends if MSI are able to lend me one, I've requested the GL series a few weeks ago but they didn't have any for me to borrow at that time
So, @Jarrod's Tech, in your opinion, is this good option for laptop that will be doing some 3D modeling, and similar stuff?
To be honest I'd get anything other than this due to the CPU throttling issues I had, in mostly GPU tasks like 3D modelling it might go ok though, but the newer FX505 fixes the issues here though.
@@JarrodsTech I see what you mean, but I have already ordered it, so, we shall see. Some commented that bios updates kinda solved that problem. How does it perform doing basic stuff, like, internet browsing, office and that stuff, because, that is what I'll be using it most
Hope it works well, let me know how it goes!
@@JarrodsTech sure, I will contact you. Do you have some ideas, how GPU throttling could be solved?
And also, thanks for great, in depth review and good, solid advice :)
Nice video Jarrod! Can you also compare this laptop to another laptop with an i7-6700HQ with a GTX 970M? Thanks!
Thanks! It probably doesn't make too much sense to compare this laptop given you miss out on performance due to the power limit throttling, however I do have other comparison videos on the channel, including 970M vs 1050Ti which should give you a rough idea on the differences between graphics. I don't yet have any CPU comparisons with the 8750H though but I'm working on that.
are the 7 piles of laptops the ones that you own or were they just sent you what are the names of the 7 laptops you have
At this time I only owned one or two
Hey Jarrod, Which one do you think is better - Asus Tuf (i7 8th gen)(this one) or Dell 7567( i7 7th gen) or Acer Predator Helios 300 (i7 8th gen) or Msi GL i7 8th gen ?? Screen quality and future secure laptop are my top priority.
And I can't seem to decide, due to mixed reviews on all of em
I haven't used any MSI GL series laptops yet, so can't really comment on it, although it looks alright based on the specs and what others have said. I find it difficult to recommend the FX504 personally due to the issues I mention in the video, although some have said this has been fixed with a new BIOS update, but I have not been able to test it as I no longer have the laptop. I'd probably pick the Helios 300 out of those, better CPU and GPU than the Dell, although not quite as good battery life. I've actually got a video coming soon of the Dell G5 vs the Helios 300 which you might find useful.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks man, for the quick reply. I would definitely have the predator and dell as my top preferences. But I'll wait for your dell g5 video.
But - Predator i7 also seems to have similar heating problems.
No problem! It should be up this weekend 👍
Planning on getting one soon can't wait
Even after the discussion about the performance problems?
@@JarrodsTech sure I found found 1 on sale for super cheap and I'm on a budget so this should be perfect
This is my first so I don't have high expectations
Hey man, it would be great if you could do a comparison video of budget(~1000$) gaming laptops in mid 2018. We are just overwhelmed with choices from 1050Ti and 1060 in this segment right now. Looking forward to your next video, Cheers!
Hey, I want to do that I just need to get my hands on a few more laptops in that range in order to do the comparison, as you've probably noticed most of the laptops on the channel recently have been on the higher end, I at least want to get the new Helios 300, maybe a HP Omen / Lenovo laptop to compare too, just trying to get in contact with people there regarding review units.
would this laptop work with bannerlord mount and blades?
I don't know what that is sorry. If you haven't bought it yet though I'd suggest literally anything else, this is the worst laptop I've tested in 100+ reviews.
Hello, should i get the acer nitro 5 with gtx1050 4gb or asus tuf gtx1050
I would buy any laptop other than the FX504.
how much should I overclock the gpu by? I'm doing this for a friend because he has the i5 model and regrets buying this model :(
By as much as you can while remaining stable, this will vary by machine/hardware, there is no global value I can provide, you just need to test and experiment.
Jarrod'sTech can u plz tell me how I can test this out, i’ve watched ur 2018 acer predator helios 300 video and it helped out a lot:) nice content and thx for replying btw
@@gavinchan5966 Search for an MSI Afterburner tutorials, try undervolting the CPU too, here's a guide: ua-cam.com/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/v-deo.html
Jarrod'sTech i’m pretty sure his laptop is power limit throttling so how do i fix that?
How do I take off the back to the laptop 😭
Thx a lot for your hard work plz review the HP Omen 15 dc0051nr
Thanks! Yeah I've heard good things about them, I'm still trying to get in contact with someone at HP, no luck so far.
