“I hope you have coffee and lots of it” You said this as I was literally sipping coffee lol Saw that this vid was an hour and knew I had to get comfortable
About where the triplets come from, it's due to the fifth up : a fifth interval is a frequency ration of about 3/2 (not exactly, as it's in equal temperament, but pretty damn close), so to get the pitch up a fifth you have to play the delay 1,5 time faster. So quarter notes become quarter triplets. Now, I think you could have awesome things using the 4th up or 5th down (that means 4/3 or 2/3 frequency ratio) settings : With 4th up, quarter notes would become dotted eight, and with 5th down, eight notes would become dotted eight too, either way you could combine the awesomeness of pitch shifting and dotted eight tricks. That could result in truly amazing sounds, if played right !
Your take at the end is gold. The 'conflict of interest' associated with the provided unit is unfortunate so I very much appreciate that you seem straight about a units drawbacks. Thanks!
The dip switch limitation tells us that a MIDI controller is needed unlock the full potential of using one of these, especially in a live situation. If you can't control the dip switch functions in real time, with a controller you can at least save their positions per preset. This would be especially useful for switching between the modulation toggle as you demonstrated. It also seems like as soon as you find a great sound with this pedal, you turn one knob slightly and find something else that's amazing. This thing is a recipe for getting lost for hours, an instrument unto itself.
Upvoted, if for no other reason than your vocal explanation of what it does being both brilliant and ridiculous, which is probably the only way to explain this pedal in words.
This unit will never have enough knobs. If you're familiar with MIDI, a lot is possible by sending control codes from Cubase. Full use of all functions would need a plugin with a visual control panel. I would trade the dip-switches on the back side for a USB port and software to overcome the physical limitations. This is a pedal made to inspire creative people hands on - in the studio, not really for stage. It will take some time to understand how it works. But fiddling around can produce some great surprises!
31:45 There is a built in solution to changing the tempo in step mode although it’s not elegant: if in step mode you hold down both footswitches for some time the tempo led will change color and allow you to tap in a new tempo. Hold down both again to go back to step mode.
What a great review! Hadn't paid too much attention this pedal until now. It's the ultimate shoegazer pedal with lots of great features just as analogue delay. Definitely going the board. Now I just need a good easy to use reverse delay/lopper.
There’s also 80Tape In Limbo that does the analog delay pitch shifting but it doesn’t have as many intervals and steps as the Thermae. Also, the LPF on Thermae just makes it sound a little bit better, in my opinion.
‘F*^%ing Devil’s Mouse Piano’ is forever what I will now think when I’m bending over the Thermae with a flashlight in my mouth, tilting the pedal up with one hand and clicking the dip switch with a toothpick with my other hand, meanwhile trying to keep my guitar from swinging around and smashing into things.
Nice review, it's like one in all the pedals I use for clean stuff, just with a lot more extras. A big version of it with expression pedal, tap foot switch and memory to store presets that also has foot switches and a digital display could be pretty usable for live situations.
Loved it BUT sold it as the modulation and half speed were key features and yet were hidden and inaccessible...unless you're willing to add additional hardware. The RKM Total Recall replaced my Thermae but I do miss that LPF!!
the triplets stuff you're wondering about: I had a deluxe memory boy that can be set to do comparable stuff. Basically: as you explained, the sounds are analogue. Meaning that the lower octaves are created by sloooowiiiing doooooooown the delay. The higher octaves are super fast because otherwise they would not be an octave higher. And yess that messes with the tempo. That is the whole point. I now want this pedal can I have one?
Dmitry Maximov - check the chase bliss web site. The red knob has a clock filter, etc...so it’s more “tradition” and predictable delay. Thermae... is just well crazy experiment joy!
I keep coming back to this video just for the intro song and am like these are the souds I would really like to be able to achieve . I just think this pedal is going to be way over my head and would probably be better off with the source audio stuff
@@EytschPi42 it seems I need new ears. i want either the tonal recall or the thermae. I want awesome normal analog delay tones plus cool sound scape stuff, but i dont want that purely weird stuff. Which pedal do you recommend for that?
I mean...it's cool sounding.....endless possibilities. But those kind of pedals always seem to me like just "jamming toys".....i can't see the how you would use this in a band context.....and for just a jamming toy the price is quite high :-)
While i would agree with you for the most part, i think this pedal is aimed at a very specific kind of player in a specific genre, not ya regular rock/metal guitarist. It really is an instrument in its own. Someone said it best on facebook, you dont play this pedal, it plays you.
Well it's the ultimate shoegazer pedal if you ask me. That aside is also a normal analogue delay with great modulation. The review focused a lot on the pitch shifting, but the analogue delay plus modulation plus lpf is a great tool for lots of bands.

Thanks for this excellent, in-depth demo, which is probably the most useful I've seen for this pedal.

"Don't encourage me." I so relate to that statement. You look like you enjoy yourself and - coupled with your input - that's why I enjoy your reviews!

Umberto Y Lost Trio Paranoias well put!! Or a eurorack version
If I could get one of these in my country easily, I'd make a USB mod for it. All that hard work to avoid dip switches? Yes please!
Thats pretty much what I said as well and I hadn't even read your comment. It is a very amazing pedal though.

If you want a tempo knob, the Disaster Area micro.clock works perfectly for that.
it'll work for this pedal?
just 8 minutes in HENNING I LOVE YOU
Can't wait for the Laney amp demo!!
Really great demonstration of how the DIP switches work.
Absolutely love the intro song reminded me of a modern pink floyd type thing just amazingly beautiful.
Love that term 'mouse piano' !!!
at 25:07 you get confused but the riff that emerges with the triplets is fantastic!!!! groovy as well
‘F*^%ing Devil’s Mouse Piano’ is forever what I will now think when I’m bending over the Thermae with a flashlight in my mouth, tilting the pedal up with one hand and clicking the dip switch with a toothpick with my other hand, meanwhile trying to keep my guitar from swinging around and smashing into things.
All your demo tracks are killer!
Would it be a dumb idea to buy this after already owning the tonal recall red ? It just sounds so good.
Thanks man! Yeah, there are so many awesome pedals out right now that take a buncha buncha programming

Aaaahh this pedal and your playing made me fell asleep!
Nice
the tones and modulations you get are amazing on clean especially maybe a little bit simpler rather than all does switches at the back
“The Devils Micey piano”? Is that wtf I just heard, lol...amazing.
I guess you can set and then save a presets and then recall it through the MIDI controller, if you have one, can't you? Great demo as usual!
why not an usb port and a gui for the chase bliss stuff ? why ?
The from factor thing is a bit annoying but all of these issues can be resolved with a cheap midi controller and 122 saved presets.
26:56 to 28:06 is worth the pedal price!

Speaking of regular delay function - how would you compare thermae to tonal recall red knob? Similar or... struggling with the choice here
Dmitry Maximov - check the chase bliss web site. The red knob has a clock filter, etc...so it’s more “tradition” and predictable delay. Thermae... is just well crazy experiment joy!
Henning, what about midi? Can you do a part 2 about the midi function of this pedal?
no.... too complex.... but as far as I know you can control everything via midi
Love it!!!
Sir, what are those low-profile 1/4" right-angle cables in the Thermae?
Awesome review of an awesome pedal! (that I'll probably never be able to afford :-(). It would definitely benefit from more controls though!
Could you repeat that?
I keep coming back to this video just for the intro song and am like these are the souds I would really like to be able to achieve . I just think this pedal is going to be way over my head and would probably be better off with the source audio stuff
Dude, you set the tempo first and then you switch to step mode. Also, Henning, Joel makes big pedals now. I hope you're happy.
Is it just me or is this most applicable with synths where you have your hands close to the pedal and possibly free?
Great video Mr Knob. Can’t stop laughing. More knob vids please.
I want Thermae+ too.
maybe Thermae Palace? with stereo
gorgeous into
The Thermae is cool & all but that Maybach... 🤤
Do you have a playlist for Chase Bliss ???
nope, sorry... there should be five
@@EytschPi42 no problem, I search here...
This pedal should be called the Option Paralysis. It's cool, though. But reading the manual is probably like studying for finals.
I imagine a Henning Pedal that's just his voice doing delay/pitch/ effects like at the beginning.
did they actually respond to your suggestions?
They know that they need a bigger platform to really make these pedals even more usable
@@EytschPi42 I love the sound of chase bliss pedals but the interface is literally why I avoid them.
I've always wanted this to be my ultimate pedal, even tried in in a shop once - but I'd never be able to use it in a real world context.
I am going to run my fender rhodes through this thing
You need to post a video of this if you haven't already
Honesttly, it doesnt sound that great. The thermae has pretty low headroom for other instruments besides guitar@@alden2205
**CHASE BLISS**: the Bugatti of stomps in 2018
wait, it stops working periodically and then bursts into flames?
Each knob is 20k
Just dope
Only in minnesoda baby
I wonder if this was his last PAID demo from Chase Bliss.
nope... they love the honesty!
This pedal need an app and a usb... some thing like the Tc flashback.
Bertrand Veneziani amazig ideia! Every CBA pedals need that!
Hey Henning, what did you make the backing drum track with? I really like the sound of the (virtual) kit
probably BFD3
@@EytschPi42 cheers!
Henning get a haircut ya hippie!
I wish this pedal could be used to make music.
Surprisingly it can… I have used it in a bunch of songs and it turned out great!
@@EytschPi42 Did the songs end up sounding like they were being played backwards?
Nope… just nice textures with some added notes
@@EytschPi42 it seems I need new ears. i want either the tonal recall or the thermae. I want awesome normal analog delay tones plus cool sound scape stuff, but i dont want that purely weird stuff. Which pedal do you recommend for that?

Bath!
after watching this, i couldnt help but wonder how your nail died
It didn’t die, it was relic’d by the Fender Custom Shop 😁
This is sort of like the Moog delay with a whole lot more options
HP 42 we TRUST you!.... no need to tell us u'r getting paid or not...it's AWKWARD
I have to say it. There are rules about this stuff.
This is a studio pedal , it's not realistic to use in a live situation or playing with your buddies.
Another expensive toy.
