Thanks Frank for the info. I repowered 18 months ago with an etec g2 300hp. It has been one issue after another. My dealer has gone above and beyond trying to get the motor to run correctly. I found this post searching "excessive knock" which is my latest issue. My motor runs great and then for no discernable reason, reduces power to idle with the code "excessive knock". Once at idle, it normally let's me power right back up and can last a few minutes or an hour. I'll share your findings with my dealer and see where that gets me. I certainly have no desire to run 30-40 miles offshore until these issues get resolved. BRP's sudden announcement to stop making Evinrude motors was a surprise after nearly 115 years, or was it.......

Ditto, I have a 2018 G2 and suddenly I'm getting this same excessive knock and reducing to idle. Code also said bad fuel service soon, so I talked to repairman and they think bad fuel. I always carefully treat my fuel so thats strange, but I use 87 octane no name fuel. Repair said to burn off, or remove remaining fuel and refuel and stick with name brand 91 octane. Havent done it yet, thats weird too because etec emphasizes runs fine on 87 octane. Guess I shoulda got a Yamaha

I have 2 e-tecs on the back of my boat for the last 4 years and I run them hard all summer off Gloucester Ma.. High RPM in high seas all the time. I've never had to bring my boat to the dealer for work, I have a crappy laptop and the right software to do it all myself and I'm 58 year tech shithead but manage easily. Motors get plugs and a new water pump and thermos every year even though they don't even need them, that's it and they run as good now as the day they were installed. My most concerning code ever pulled from emm was wrong barometric signal and that looks to be from having the air box off the motor at the time. If your having a problem with getting the service records from diff dealers, do it your self I know exactly what's been done to mine since day 1 Get your hands a bit dirty and save the cry

As a technician it is my responsibility to know and be qualified on the equipment I'm working on to quickly and accurately diagnose problems and inspect for any potential failures. It's the shops responsibility to know the type of work that can be done there before accepting any work to be done and taking responsibility for the work that is performed. You should look at any explanation of a problem with logic to determine either they are blowing off excuses because they don't know how to work on the equipment and to get you on down the road to make it another shops problem or are they trying to make a problem that should be covered under warranty into a bill that brings in thousands to the shop. All EFI motors will have a knock sensor. Running with a cylinder down is much better than running with detonation in the cylinder and having the motor grenade while 100 miles out.

I loved your videos, great work. I'm an engineer and product manager but not in the boating industry. When a company has a product near the top, they invest most of their money into it to stay at the top of their game. When they're not satisfied, like in Evinrude's case, they may launch a new product to catapult to the top. The problem with that, they generally underestimate the effort and have a small team, resulting in schedules that took way too long, and this is the case here. Pressure mounts and they are forced to release it to the market without proper testing. Which is also the case here. It is a pity because we will never know the potential of this new and very innovative technology. May have needed another two years of testing and small incremental changes. What I'm more curious about, is why the technology has not been picked up by another manufacturer, of course there's more to the story and they certainly had theses discussions, 2-stroke may have a stigma attach to it that nobody wants their money invested in it. Obviously I'm writing this after Evinrude stopped production, did you ever get compensated by them? These stories are not uncommon even for large manufacturers.

Airated water off the running surface of a hull is a true issue. Mercury actually put a dealer video together back in the 90’s with under water cameras capturing this situation. Typically caused by long hull chines with sharp edge stops. Stepped hulls disturbed a wide surface that it typically does not create this direct problem area.

I was seriously considering this exact motor for my new 24 bay boat but this video saved me from it... have no idea why other than what I have heard about the fuel efficiency claims... have 1200 hrs on my 2014 yamaha 250... it has had zero issues and i have not been easy on it... have heard a ton of BS about this thing now.. Yamerhammer all the way!

Enthused with the amount of time you have put in studying your G2s. I am in same boat, no pun intended. I am retired and purchased a bay boat with a 2006 115hp etec (not G2) in December of 2021. I have had it in water 2 times since then, and in shop rest of time due to overheating. Water pump, water pressure valve, 2 thermostats have been replaced. Each time I am told it's ready, pick it up, put in water to test and guess what, hot after about 4 minutes. I am presently trying to figure it out my self, tired of spending money on it.Hope we can get our problems solved soon.

Understand why Evinrude tried to differentiate themselves; but if you don’t have a sure fire product that out performs competitors in every aspect your days are probably numbered. Love their forward thinking. Wouldn’t want to face the CEO at Bombardier.

I worked at Evinrude in the late 90’s. Evinrude was the worlds largest marine company making good engines for years and years. They basically failed because they made EVERYTHING on the engines in their own factories and had a huge engineering group. The opening of global markets driving costs down and a large pension payroll pushed them into bankruptcy. BRP bought the company and a couple assets. BRP is Evinrude and put their stamp on everything. They built a whole new factory from the ground up and outsourced all the components. Funny to see how many parts on the engine are made in China. The joke was they employed more accountants than engineers. The wanted the technology to put into their other products jet boats, skidoo and others. Evinrude engineers had rotax engines in test dyno’s with the direct injection systems back in 99’.

I got bad engines before sounds like a nightmare dealing with who you had to.
    I got a 2020 G1 Etec 150HO i have not had one issue
My boat went from 26 mph 5500rpm to now 36 5100rpm i got 600-750 rpm left it sets low on transom gonna try up a hole or two see if rpm gains.
Plate is under water about 1/2 inch say should be just plane
Has plenty of get Up out the Hole and on Plane!!!
Fuel milage is great!!! I paid $11,500 installed new controls!
I hope they get it right for you and you get a chance to run them Etec 300's!!! I love it i could afford a 150ho 300 was out my price range for sure.
Sucks you got a bad engine i hope it all get worked out !!!!

Stainless Reed's can damage an engine for sure but most of the time they pass through the engine and score the cylinder cause major damage but never have I seen one stop and engine dead. Carbon Reed's are the way to go but the service life is shorter.

G1 against G2 300hp motors had similar issues; hot spots in the block, melting exhaust tube, water pressure relief value and EMM failure codes burning into memory. I believe BRP management wanted a new motor so bad to stop the issues, the pushed out the G2 out a couple years too early. Needed more time to find and fix the issues you have described in your videos

Are the recalls you mention actual recalls? Now, I am scared shitless that my engine is going to explode. My dealer is, I am sure, stuck in the middle. Just received a letter from BRP that Evinrude is no more. Is your lawyer going for a class action? Or can he recommend a lawyer in Ohio to help?

    Or came loose?
I was wondering why if air or something not other engine.
    Sounds like idiots doing maintenance.
Check every nut and bolts before i run out 25 miles off shore is what i do.
Havent had loose reed issues but have had nut or bolt loosen. Its an engine it vibrates.
I learned to check everything touch everything put a wrench or socket to it.
Most Important Have SeaTow or Boat Tow USA Or whoever but someone to help.
So are you thinkin about sellin this engine for ? Or both ?
Id hope you give it a real 100 hours
I love the power and have no problem runnin down 200 4 strokes on boats my boats size about 21 ft walk around
Anyways im just a happy owner who was gonna get a 4 stroke
The new tech is outstanding of direct injection.
The G1 i got because less high tech lol
    Hope it gets better

Well, as a boat owner for 25 years, I had a Merc V8 on a 29-footer that kept sucking valves. Yep.
Got up to 11k in repairs out of pocket and said, Okay, I know what to do, simple: Got a good lawyer, filed suit against the dealer and Merc, won it, got them TO TAKE BACK THE BOAT, and furnish me with a 40-foot ship, instead of the 29.
MORAL: Everybody loves to bitch about lawyers, but there are times when you NEED A GOOD ONE.
As long as people misbehave, we need lawyers....
So I advise: Quit fucking around and get a good lawyer. You are waaaaaaaay beyond what any dealer or factory can do for you.

Its the after sales service that counts and when manufacturers blame users or make excuses/theorys that makes a poor experience.

aha at 4:30 " #3 cylinder only fired 5 hrs out of 32hrs of service" Told ya it fired, or it wouldn't have been sooty
the butt splice was a bad idea from the get go...and surely they are replacement plug wires available even in Nassau.
all new engines have a knock sensors , not just evinrude
But the ladder vibrating setting off the knock sensor is pretty funny, agreed. bad theory. Knock sensors have been around for a while.
re: software revision, interesting that other motors were having knock sensor issues.
at 12:50 - I don't know I'm starting to see things your way....not many stepped hulls in Wisconsin....but why just cyl #3 if the water is aerated?
at 13:57 - reed valves hanging on by a thread!! well simple fix is loctite...but the sooty spark plug should have been a clue to the mech that A/F ratio was jacked...and if the factory told the mech to check the reed valves way back in nassau, did he fix the issue? If so why did the cyl #3 acted up again in hour 2 coming back to you in exuma on the second time.
again starting to see things your way now :-)

I really wanted a etec gen 1 200hp, but didn’t trust the G2. Too much tech and electronics for a water environment. The problems make sense knowing BRP just pulled the plug on Evinrude. Glad i Went with a Suzuki DF200A with mechanical controls. On the gulf coast, I see the majority of the off shore charters dropping yamahas for Suzukis. If the charters trust going to Suzuki, there must be a good reason.

Did you almost single handedly kill Evinrude sales and sink there E-Tec division? A guy at my job was tasked with repowering the company boat and mentioned E-Tec. I had watched your videos and urged him to reconsider and watch your series. So last year he buys E-Tec anyways. Now they stopped production, and I'm counting the days to catastrophe. There is enough room for him to install a double set of orr locks to viking style row that thing back to shore though. Evinrude folks mention market share, four stroke engines, and the virus but a product they claim was better than there four stroke competitors would have survived.
In a screwed up kind of way, the screwed unfortunately being you. There is some satisfaction in Evinrude not making anymore of those engines anymore.

    • @thoenyhills217
      @thoenyhills217  4 роки тому +1

No sir. Evinrude destroyed itself by making an inferior product and then using modern communication methods to spread a massive propaganda campaign. Satisfaction came last December when Evinrude once again denied the warranty claim on a motor with 100hrs on it. I simply told the dealer to remove the motors and keep them for his personal boat. The attorney I engaged in Florida informed me that me already has 7 of the same cases against Evinrude and that he himself was in the same predicament. He had two of these motors on his own boat. His advice? Buy new motors at the boat show. He had litigation we Evinrude three previous occasions. All ended the same, his client spent 40-50k in lawyer fees. Evinrude provided a new motor. The end

It sure doesn't look good on BRP when a division of it's brand appears to be preforming so poorly with a very high dollar product. I'm very curious to know if these E-tec marine engines are developed/engineered solely in-house by Evinrude or if Rotax has any involvement/input? Rotax engines are generally know to be well built/reliable and technically advanced and have been used for decades by BRP. they are competing with likes of Yamaha and Honda in the off-road/off highway markets with great success and you generally don't hear of this non-sense in other parts of the BRP products.

after having my yamaha stolen,l repowered my robalo with a 2017 etec g2 200 ho.
im on my 3rd replacement swivel bracket, steering failed day one, and failed again and again, also had fouled plugs in 20 hours and again at 125 hours, and a bad fuel injector causing my engine to run on 5 cylinders.
also the key switch was replaced twice, and then they replaced the harness for the key switch.
    they keep fixing it.
last time the swivel bracket failed i tried a new dealer, so far i have done 50 more hours since the last swivel bracket was installed.
i have 367 hours total, would have a lot more but its spent a lot of time in the shop.
average use for me is 250 to 300 hours a year.
i worry about trolling too long and fouling plugs, shutting it off offshore[key switch], and losing controll of the boat due to faulty swivel brackets, 3 of them so far
I spent a fourtune on gassing my truck to pull it to the shop and then pick it up only to have it break again.
ps i did get a 10 year warranty.
when it runs right it is a great motor

@@OptixLive98 I I think if they continue to do research and development, they're definitely heading in the right direction. Because when it does run right it's straight bad ass and gets 30% better fuel economy that my previous 2016 Yamaha 150 4 stroke.
And from 42 miles per hour to 60 miles per hour.
I wish Yamaha would copy their 2 stroke direct injected design and make one that isn't plagued with trouble.
In my honest opinion the only place that a two-stroke excels over a four stroke is when it's spinning a propeller, tires on pavement would never stopped spinning from the extra power and torque, that's why it's not used for motorcycles, remember the Widowmaker H2 2-stroke 750 Kawasaki that claimed many lives, because of its 2 stroke power curve

I would hate to have the issues and waste of personnel time that this etec seems to be causing you.
Money is one thing but waste of time is something I cannot put up with
Not sure what to think of this, why are the reeds valves loose???

Im looking for a new boat, why do u see cheaper prices on boats that are Etec powered??? Now u know why.... shit company

Are you saying "tits up" as in dead? You seem to be stretching the imagination quite a length to theorize that Evinrude is going out of business based on your primarily anecdotal account here. I don't think it stretches imagination too far to theorize that from the point the captain threw a hissy fit regarding the brand, you allowed that to color your perception of the brand and the process. Even with the best brands, it is going to take a team effort to rectify issues and if one member of the team has already made up their mind that product is poor, they may not be the best team player. At some point it can become more about making a company wrong or bad, or advancing a theory of failure/going "tits-up" rather than efficiently finding a solution to a problem. In the end you are one owner of a used boat with used outboards that has had difficulty with your engines and now we have heard one side of the story. At least you are finding many things to laugh at along the way.

Guess im lucky cause i like things the easy way. It took zero brain power for me to know merc. Was my motor of choice. Just watched the races as a kid and saw who was boss. If you hook that boat to a good ole chevy life is wonderful. Boats are supposed to be fun, not a headache. I try to use simple, tried and true products. What about that 450 R. Evinrude dont want none of that for sure.

Doesnt dominate the water then give it. If you cant come up with anything then its all the proof i need about who has the brains. I must say these videos are the most damaging testimony I have heard about E-TEC. I could only find #1 and #4 so far. My mechanic swears by them. He has an excellent reputation and service center with all the equipment to diagnose pretty much anything. Maintenance is the most important factor in any mechanical vehicle/business fleet, regardless of make or model. This isn't the first horror story I've heard, so I will take it with a grain of salt. Evinrude has been building outboards longer than anybody. And it is my opinion that the brand is under attack. Having said that, Suzuki did build some motors for Evinrude/ Johnson in the past. The G2 technology is impressive.

Technology is impressive? Any monkey can write up a presser about how their tech does this that and the the other thing, why you don't even need controls! Our engine reads your mind and adjusts accordingly! Impressive!! Except it doesn't, what happens is your tech is in the shop 98% of the time as technicians scratch their heads trying to figure out what is wrong with the POS.
What's impressive is a machine that with minimal maintenance or even better, aggressive disinterest continues to reliably start and run flawlessly for years. The owner gets tired of the color scheme and gives the working thing to his nephew just to have an excuse to buy a new one. That's impressive. Not the pointless half truths at best spewed by marketing divisions.
