Evinrude goes Tits Up! Endless problems with E-TEC G2 300hp motors. Or How Evinrude has cost me over $300,000 in 7 months! Watch before you buy. Part 1 of 4.
Thanks for the likes and comments on my official page. It is really nice to have you on here🥰🥰
Bla bla bla..got mine 300 g2 since 2015.runs great 100%
For almost the entire history of outboards you kept records of your service, and computers did not exist and sharing data didn't exist. Sounds like all of a sudden people are spoiled.
One comment: You know you have a problem with one engine and you go out anyway? I guess common sense is not part of your daily exploits.
It doesn't sound like good business decisions were made. Unproven equipment in an offshore environment. I'm not convinced evinrude was ever a top performer.
Que porquería los e tec
I've never had one, thank God, buying an engine like this new or used is literally a huge headache, luckily they stopped deceiving people, the factory for this rubbish closed in 2020 😂
man those motors looked and sounded good but I will stay away
wow!! Can't believe, when you was do your research you didn't see any of my posts and videos regarding my luck with this outboard. MY boat spent more than 85% of its time in dealers garages, in the time span of 3 year before i gave up and brought a another new boat with the new 4 stoke mercury.
Fuck an E TEC 100% I am a boat mechinc 20 +years I will not work on it not touch it or slow it in my shop
Thanks Frank. I am looking to buy a another boat. There is a nice one with an Etec G2 on the back. I will be giving that a wide swerve. You may have saved me from a huge mistake. Appreciate your time making the videos.
You’re a wacko Evinrude never even asked me for proof of purchase from original owner when i got my boat w G2’s just asked for #’s and assigned warranty over to me zero questions asked
your story telling sucks and youre long winded. Get to the damn point...
Enthused with the amount of time you have put in studying your G2s. I am in same boat, no pun intended. I am retired and purchased a bay boat with a 2006 115hp etec (not G2) in December of 2021. I have had it in water 2 times since then, and in shop rest of time due to overheating. Water pump, water pressure valve, 2 thermostats have been replaced. Each time I am told it's ready, pick it up, put in water to test and guess what, hot after about 4 minutes. I am presently trying to figure it out my self, tired of spending money on it.Hope we can get our problems solved soon.
I have a 2019 g2 200 2 hours into the motor engine broke they sent a new power head now my power steering is leaking badly and cannot get parts was wondering if you ever sued them that’s my next step!!!
They should produce a outboard under the can-am name and really really take their time with it and I’d definitely buy it,, I’m all up for evinrude really making a comeback but it’s not gonna happen,,,
if it cost 300 000$ in 7month, why you didnt buy 2 new engin before, it will cost way less and will be problem free
Evinrude and Mercury just arnt in the same league as the Japanese motors are for reliability.
Great for sir I was actually thinking of purchasing a 200 e tech for my bass boat, it's a shame that the highly educated fools at evenrude have no clue what they are doing.
What a fool if you are losing $300,000 in 7 months why didn't you simply buy new engines after the very first month. Your numbers don't stack up.
Was in the end it was bad reed Or came loose? I was wondering why if air or something not other engine. Sounds like idiots doing maintenance. Check every nut and bolts before i run out 25 miles off shore is what i do. Havent had loose reed issues but have had nut or bolt loosen. Its an engine it vibrates. I learned to check everything touch everything put a wrench or socket to it. Most Important Have SeaTow or Boat Tow USA Or whoever but someone to help. So are you thinkin about sellin this engine for ? Or both ? Id hope you give it a real 100 hours I love the power and have no problem runnin down 200 4 strokes on boats my boats size about 21 ft walk around Anyways im just a happy owner who was gonna get a 4 stroke The new tech is outstanding of direct injection. The G1 i got because less high tech lol Hope it gets better
I got bad engines before sounds like a nightmare dealing with who you had to. I got a 2020 G1 Etec 150HO i have not had one issue My boat went from 26 mph 5500rpm to now 36 5100rpm i got 600-750 rpm left it sets low on transom gonna try up a hole or two see if rpm gains. Plate is under water about 1/2 inch say should be just plane Has plenty of get Up out the Hole and on Plane!!! Fuel milage is great!!! I paid $11,500 installed new controls! I hope they get it right for you and you get a chance to run them Etec 300's!!! I love it i could afford a 150ho 300 was out my price range for sure. Sucks you got a bad engine i hope it all get worked out !!!! Long Live The Two Strokes !!!
Update: Now my 2018 G2 250 HO the heads are leaking. I had no idea until I saw a heavy salt deposit around the heads of the motor. Dealer said they think bolts were not torqued correctly from factory, surprised but not a shocker. I'd love to see a class action law suit against evinrude, Im living your same nightmare.
They went out of business because of problems like these ... Old two strokes were not great but these are complete garbage ..
Etec was all hype and marketing .. old two strokes were better and they were not great ...
Quite a few professional, top tier Bass tournament fishermen including, Scott Martin, Andy Morgan, Brian Thrift, Jacob Wheeler, all ran G2 motors, until, Evinrude dropped support at tournaments, so, they had no choice but to find other options. The G2's were known to be just as reliable as any other major manufacturer, and were also known to be some of the fastest when used on the bass boats they were installed on. If they weren't reliable, no WINNING pro fisherman in his right mind would have chosen that brand, as word of mouth gets around VERY quickly about bad products in that circle. Your warranty issues sound like issues that should have been investigated better when you purchased those motors used. And as far as the "double failure" , that sounds like more of a rigging issue than anything else, as there should be no way 2 motors fail at exactly the same time, and then would restart, unless there was some kind of controller glitch, or electrical powering issue, which, probably caused both motors to shut down just to protect themselves from further damage. All of this is a moot point though, as Evinrude basically didn't know how to compete in the 4 stroke market, and although produced a seemingly competitive and high enough quality product, they couldn't overcome the "stigma" associated with the "polluting, smoking 2 stroke motor" that most people were used to from previous generations of 2 stroke motor design, and the tech that enabled them to overcome the pollution and other issues that older 2 stroke designs had, was costly to develop and produce. OH, and why.. run a motor (when you have 2) with a bad cylinder? You are risking more damage from either a shortage of fuel from an injector system failure, which means possible damage due to lack of fuel and lubrication, OR, a build up of deposits from unburnt and compressed fuel that will also cause damage. The fact you kept on running it would be questioned by the mechanic inspecting it when he pulled data, and that might shut down any warranty claim on it as well. Just sounds like a poor decision by the owner to do this. Most 4 stroke manufactures also stepped up their game, making motors of the same HP that weigh as little as Evinrude's previously lighter weight per HP offerings, so, at that point, it was also another blow to BRP's sales of these items. It is sad that things went this way, as competition usually improves those companies that are involved, but it looks like Merc walked away with the trophy for the major market share of new larger HP outboards.
This guy is a hater
I own the same motor but I don't have an attitude problem like this guy. This guy is just the worst case of human being . Yeah it's not super reliable mostly because of environmental restrictions when it comes to be R P and her snowmobiles. Do you want the most reliable motor out there everybody says Yamaha I'm now switching that opinion to mercury 100%
Covid was the best cover for BRP to shut down Evinrude. I believe the warranty issues like your was eating the company away. Who knows how many lawsuits were pending. I would say since BRP is using the Evinrude technology on their other products it would be hard not to still be liable for all the Evinrude products made under BRP
I worked at Evinrude in the late 90’s. Evinrude was the worlds largest marine company making good engines for years and years. They basically failed because they made EVERYTHING on the engines in their own factories and had a huge engineering group. The opening of global markets driving costs down and a large pension payroll pushed them into bankruptcy. BRP bought the company and a couple assets. BRP is Evinrude and put their stamp on everything. They built a whole new factory from the ground up and outsourced all the components. Funny to see how many parts on the engine are made in China. The joke was they employed more accountants than engineers. The wanted the technology to put into their other products jet boats, skidoo and others. Evinrude engineers had rotax engines in test dyno’s with the direct injection systems back in 99’.
G1 against G2 300hp motors had similar issues; hot spots in the block, melting exhaust tube, water pressure relief value and EMM failure codes burning into memory. I believe BRP management wanted a new motor so bad to stop the issues, the pushed out the G2 out a couple years too early. Needed more time to find and fix the issues you have described in your videos
The high pressure fuel pump was replaced 3 times.
Airated water off the running surface of a hull is a true issue. Mercury actually put a dealer video together back in the 90’s with under water cameras capturing this situation. Typically caused by long hull chines with sharp edge stops. Stepped hulls disturbed a wide surface that it typically does not create this direct problem area.
We have the same engine and it will randomly just cut out and stop working. Any solutions to this?
This is the reason BRP ended Evinrude, they didn't want to deal with this fucking nutjob anymore.
“There we sat, 3 dumbasses all stairing at each other.”
Is there a condensed version???
Thank you for this video I am definitely never buying anything evinrude
Thanks Frank for the info. I repowered 18 months ago with an etec g2 300hp. It has been one issue after another. My dealer has gone above and beyond trying to get the motor to run correctly. I found this post searching "excessive knock" which is my latest issue. My motor runs great and then for no discernable reason, reduces power to idle with the code "excessive knock". Once at idle, it normally let's me power right back up and can last a few minutes or an hour. I'll share your findings with my dealer and see where that gets me. I certainly have no desire to run 30-40 miles offshore until these issues get resolved. BRP's sudden announcement to stop making Evinrude motors was a surprise after nearly 115 years, or was it.......
Ditto, I have a 2018 G2 and suddenly I'm getting this same excessive knock and reducing to idle. Code also said bad fuel service soon, so I talked to repairman and they think bad fuel. I always carefully treat my fuel so thats strange, but I use 87 octane no name fuel. Repair said to burn off, or remove remaining fuel and refuel and stick with name brand 91 octane. Havent done it yet, thats weird too because etec emphasizes runs fine on 87 octane. Guess I shoulda got a Yamaha
Enough already windbag
The older evinrudes weren’t any good either, mine has stranded me literally 6 times. Plus Evinrude trying to bring back 2 strokes. Bad idea!
Well, as a boat owner for 25 years, I had a Merc V8 on a 29-footer that kept sucking valves. Yep. Got up to 11k in repairs out of pocket and said, Okay, I know what to do, simple: Got a good lawyer, filed suit against the dealer and Merc, won it, got them TO TAKE BACK THE BOAT, and furnish me with a 40-foot ship, instead of the 29. MORAL: Everybody loves to bitch about lawyers, but there are times when you NEED A GOOD ONE. As long as people misbehave, we need lawyers.... So I advise: Quit fucking around and get a good lawyer. You are waaaaaaaay beyond what any dealer or factory can do for you.
Bla bla bla bla get to your point or write a book!
Was he running full speed whole time
E-tec's suck... bottom line if they sold enough & were reliable enough the company would still be in business. Now back to fishing with my Yamaha F250! :)
Thoney is not Crazy, sometimes people think you are when they cant handle or believe the truth. Ok I admit I thought or should I say hoped he was a little over the top when I watched the videos until my little nightmare started. In 2018, I bought a Robalo R222 with a 250 G2 H.O. (high output) motor. Although my story may seem light compared to Thoney's, what he said rang a bell that resonated with my experience and my biggest fear is what's to come. Despite being warned and arguing like a fool with people on the Robalo forum I insisted on going with a G2, after all I had a 10 yr warranty. I was a die hard Evinrude guy based on bullet proof Evinrudes I owned in the past. I even paid $1250 extra to have motor installed at dealer and shipped from Wisconsin, Racine Riverside Dealer to L.A. as Robalo factory and my local dealer would not install motor, even though it was an unadvertised option for Robalo boats. Made no sense, same physical motor and rigging just different software just because it was an H.O., but I wont bore you with the pain I went through to get it. I have 250 hours on motor and had no issues until recently my ignition starting intermittently shorting out. I checked the whole electrical and bought new batteries, in that process I also noticed the heads on my motor were leaking. I took it to a certified repair shop about 50 miles away which there aren't many near L.A. in Costa Mesa. Tech/owner said there is a recall on the ignition, which I wasn't notified of and he said sometimes the heads are not properly torqued and leak. He repaired the leaking head and ignition under warranty and I paid for new plugs.. When I picked up my boat 4 weeks later waiting for parts and got it home I noticed dirt grease and some sort of sticky dried caulk type material on lower unit, despite bringing the boat to him washed and polished. This was just a little irritating until II noticed the cowling was also askew and had an extra 1/2" gap in the seem where the cowling pieces meet. I called the tech and drug boat back 50 miles thinking maybe he forgot to tighten screws or something, he tinkered with it for another hour and finally said the plastic parts on these motors are poorly designed and there's nothing he can do. He opened the motor and showed me where many of the plastic screw anchor points were cracked and said this is common, I said if you know that you should have people sign a waiver warning them, Like Thoney said cheap plastic. I told the tech to order new parts to make it right and he said I don't even think that will fix it. Instead of apologizing, he said are you gonna make a big deal out of a little 1/8" gap as if it was my fault. Maybe I'm crazy but you go spend over 80k on a boat that you take pride in caring for and have it returned this way and see how u feel. This pissed me off and I called Evinrude thinking they would stand behind their product and make it right. I reached a Team Leader named Ann Moriarty what a piece of work, she said in the most your S.O.L tone I'm sorry but the repair center is independent and there's nothing we can do unless it's a warranty issue. I dared not ask if the cowlings cracking are under warranty so I asked for her manager and was surprised she refused to give it to me and said the answer will be the same and the only thing I can do is take a complaint with a good luck with that tone. Almost as an afterthought she took the complaint and gave me a case number, which I haven't heard back from yet. The tech reluctantly said he would order parts from Evinrude but it would take a while, so I don't have much confidence that this will have an ok ending at all. On another note a buddy of mine just got 2, 2019 G2 300 motors replaced by Evinrude after his mechanic wrote a book on chronic problems only to have one of the new motors blow up on a 30 mile trip to Catalina. He said he's done with Evinrude and will sell his rig at a loss. So here I am with clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right and stuck between Evinrude and the repair center. I feel like I'm playing musical chairs and Evinrude and the repair shop get to remain seated. So don't hate the messenger I applaud Thoney for warning people at this point, I don't know why anyone would even buy a used G2 at this point I wouldnt. Evinrude seems to be in free fall mode at this point.
I can’t believe you ran a motor for over 100hours and knew that it was not running right and your really complaining, I have had zero problems with my 2015 E-tech, because I know how to do simple maintenance, and know that if there is a problem to cut it and fix it.
The shadow around this guy's forehead from his glasses makes him look like he's got crazy eyebrows..
The only thing this guy is missing is a gold chain showing though that open jacket.
Maybe the story is interesting but the way you tell it it gets boring real fast so i think I'm gonna skip 2,3,4
Mr. Hill, Thank you so much for all your work and making this public. I thought I was the only one. Can you please send me any additional information. For some reason, I cannot find video 5. Are the recalls you mention actual recalls? Now, I am scared shitless that my engine is going to explode. My dealer is, I am sure, stuck in the middle. Just received a letter from BRP that Evinrude is no more. Is your lawyer going for a class action? Or can he recommend a lawyer in Ohio to help?
