My home town! You came within a few minutes of my house! My auntie worked in the Essoldo building back in the 80s when it was the Top Rank bingo hall. I remember going in as a kid and thinking it was amazing looking.
Lovely. My great grandad Miller was born in Stretford in 1874. His parents and uncle lived there too. His uncle Henry Miller played first class cricket for Lancashire in 1880. Many irish lived there. My great-great grandad was born in Ireland and was a painter at The botanical garden/ White City. After that at Belle Vue. He then moved to Bootle to paint in 1885. He died in a house boiler explosion on Miller Street in Bootle in 1907. They're buried in Padiham near Burnley and in Bootle. Lovely to see how it was in Stretford back in their day. Nice one! Gonna watch it again. So much info! The football wasn't there back then and it was much more open field. My great uncle Henry Miller was born in Stretford too and died during the first world war in Belguim. I wonder if he's on the cenotaph in Stretford or in Bootle.... hmm.
I was born and raised in Stretford, it was a really nice place back then. Then the Arndale was built and it destroyed all the local shops. Ironically the Trafford centre then consumed the Arndale. Sometimes things just need to be left alone rather than remove all its culture and history. There are no trees on the road I lived on, and now blighted by cars and some poorly kept front gardens. Everyone took pride in keeping their street/road looking presentable. No one gives a toss now. Back then we knew everyone. It’s very different now……
Great video as usual I liked your dig at peel holding regarding bridge painting. The swing bridge in Stratford looks in far better condition than any of the 3 in Warrington
i finally get to see where that canal path went out of town, ty for going that way :) they need to clean that plughole. Nice to hear history of things, often drove past the arch & wondered why only that was left... i enjoyed the video !
The geese from the canal were probably the ones causing chaos at white city (apperently) andhanging around on a feild a few minutes walk away from where I live which probably explains their absence.
Love the not so subtle dig at Peel, residents of Trafford have been complaining about the state of the Barton Aqueduct for years, always the same answer, no money….🤔
Only just found this, love it. The canal maintenance is a joke. The number of eyesore boats, floating wrecks, unlicensed junk, is ridiculous. Peel don’t care. Only this morning was there an unmoored boat near the Bridge Inn in Sale.
Stretford - straight ford, the river Mersey is just further south past the precinct, Chester road crosses it there, it used to be forded. I heard they used to slaughter the pigs there because the river could be used to easily wash away the blood & s#%t.
Great video Manchester uniteds top striker Tommy Taylor a busby babe had a small council house not far from where you are on about 10 pounds a week times have changed my grandparents and parents grew up just over the bridge next to ordsell hall where guy fawkes apparently stayed
When you talk about Stretford's name/origin and link it to the river crossing, it's actually the River Mersey, Stretford crosses it at Crossford bridge, just on the border of Sale. Great video otherwise 😄
You're right in my neck of the woods. Give me a shout sometime. Don't mean to hijack your comments but my new one is on an infuriatingly unlisted thing here in Sale.
Loved this. Great soundtrack.
Love this video, mate. I grew up in Urmston, a town next to Stretford and you took me down memory lane. I knew every inch of your route.
Peel holdings are a bigger joke than my landlord when it comes to maintenance! Only just though. Great video BTW. Thanks.

Great presentation. Let's hear it for Stretford. Yeaaaaaa.

Stretford - crossing of a ford of rthe river Mersey now the boundary line between Cheshire and Lancashire before we became part of Greater Manchester.
Top one ☝️

Never knew the Cornbrook started in Gorton!
Outside Timpsons. Poor Nana.
Who's supposed to clear the plastic from the river Cornbrook...
great you missed the watch house the oldest building in stretford its ok though its the best pub for miles dont tell anyone.😁
I used to live on Hawthorn Rd. The Aquaduct there is also listed.
A great video, thanks but doesn't the ford in Stretford refer to the Mersey rather than the Irwell?
I think you are right. :)
