Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.
More should be done to help third world countries like this.
But you gotta admit this particular area of the city does resemble a 3rd world slum pretty accurately..
I've not just been but I've lived in various parts of North and West Africa, and also spent long periods in some really poor parts of the Middle East over the last 25yrs, and I promise that I haven't seen such ''enabled depravity'' like this anywhere..there are definitely poorer deprived areas all over the world but nobody would believe even if I insisted that this is allowed to thrive in the West, it is SHAMEFUL and it reeks of the kind of self loathing anti Western civilisation politics that appears to be de rigueur within certain political spheres...
@Andrew Becker Well, no every country on earth does not have places like this. Try going out of your own country to see for yourself.
@Andrew Becker America exists as all examples of humanity. This sorry horror show and extreme wealth. Hell on earth and heaven, all in one story. The problem is all the rich folk dont give a shit and these people don't either. Land of the free and brave? No... It's a parasitic hell. Same as the UK
@Andrew Becker When Japanese have seen these they gonna cry for sure.
Like I said, “We pay millions plus to people to play around with a ball and America can not “fix” this area”? Disgraceful!
Dems state.
I live in Philadelphia and they have tried several times to clean up and beautify the area. They even were going to go as far to break the law to give them safe shoot sites so if the idiots OD'd, there would be medical personnel there to give them medical attention and narcan. If they want to get clean, there are hundreds of programs in the state of PA that would be able to help them. They chose the life they're living. Put the needle down and walk into a rehab or detox to begin the process.
Easy fix kick them out.

@@dawntalley28ify Exactly! Fentanyl has the addicts way to gone. The city doesn't care. A open drug market.
Start cleaning it up.
This is a embarrassment.
Cleaning it up would require the local government to do the job they where elected to do ,but most times their job is to get re- elected . Even if they tried to clean it up the aclu and others would cry about violating their rights .
When I was dropped in a place like that (many years ago) I used every day labor and hourly hustle I could find for one purpose: to get the heII out of that place, to a place I could get a little more opportunity to work. At that point the jobs were few, but I was looking not for a job or a position, but for WORK, even work that nobody else wanted to do, and that someone would pay me, therefore, for doing. Find something nobody else wants to do, and learn to excel at it. Be patient. Serve others. Add value to everything. It may be a year or three but somebody will notice, and when they do, be ready to jump. Be happy.
Willian Penn would be appalled.

@Richard Joniec ever think they can't afford to get out of this area? Smh
Democratic mayor Kenney, DA Krasner, and police commissioner Outlaw don’t feel for these people. They are letting this happen and destroying this neighborhood.

It’s amazing watching this when there are so many different aspects of live going on, shooting up drugs, passed out in public, someone playing piano music, someone spreading Gods word, police standing around , people with kids, someone actually going to work, what a messed up society that is there! I’m thinking that area needs stronger leadership instead of a leadership tolerating it. I try wrapping my mind on how dirty and trashy it is and only garbage sites come to mind. Very hard to watch!
Are you an American citizen yourself?
At 5 minutes and 33 seconds of this video, you can see a red trash can for syringes. He's already legendary because he's in all the videos. Imam is right. The prodigal son made a wrong choice and ended up much like these people. To get out of it, the first thing he had to do was "come to his senses." I’ve been watching these incredibly sad visions for a month or so now. Not sure whether it’s because I’m Australian but I’ve so many questions. It’s almost like some really horrific movie. I see many nice cars driving past. People walking around who don’t appear to be on drugs. Mums with children. Police walking about. Needles everywhere and so many with bodies completely contorted, hunched over as though they’ve been frozen as they don’t seem to actually fall over and others are literally lying on or near the road. Is this a place where literally all addicts go to score fentanyl? Are these people all living where they’re standing or do some have proper homes where they go at night? There are also people in wheelchairs, so how do they manage things like the basic need of going to a toilet? And if the women are able to get “dates” to be able to buy the drugs, how do the men score theirs? And all the shops, another thing that baffles me. Who would even want to go into that area to shop for clothes etc? Is there violence among them?
Sorry, I realise I’m asking so much but I find this to be so horrifically surreal. So overwhelmingly sad.
i think it`s welfare mostly but also through prostitution , Robbery , Pickpocketing or Begging .
i would guess the addicted on Wheelchair just shit or piss in their pants .
Majority of them are Homeless and some have Homes but i wouldnt call it home . Anyone who can afford it would Leave this Place imediately , the Mums with children have no other choice .

We send police into these areas - like they can really solve the problem. It is unrealistic to expect law enforcement to do anything meaningful. Yeah, they can prevent crime against businesses and people who live and work there, maybe make some arrests, but that will do jackshit to solve the problem. Kick them out, they'll find another area to inhabit. It's like nobody cares about the people here, and yet, our borders are wide open for purely political reasons. We need to get our priorities straight.
