Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

I've not just been but I've lived in various parts of North and West Africa, and also spent long periods in some really poor parts of the Middle East over the last 25yrs, and I promise that I haven't seen such ''enabled depravity'' like this anywhere..there are definitely poorer deprived areas all over the world but nobody would believe even if I insisted that this is allowed to thrive in the West, it is SHAMEFUL and it reeks of the kind of self loathing anti Western civilisation politics that appears to be de rigueur within certain political spheres...

I live in Philadelphia and they have tried several times to clean up and beautify the area. They even were going to go as far to break the law to give them safe shoot sites so if the idiots OD'd, there would be medical personnel there to give them medical attention and narcan. If they want to get clean, there are hundreds of programs in the state of PA that would be able to help them. They chose the life they're living. Put the needle down and walk into a rehab or detox to begin the process.

When I was dropped in a place like that (many years ago) I used every day labor and hourly hustle I could find for one purpose: to get the heII out of that place, to a place I could get a little more opportunity to work. At that point the jobs were few, but I was looking not for a job or a position, but for WORK, even work that nobody else wanted to do, and that someone would pay me, therefore, for doing. Find something nobody else wants to do, and learn to excel at it. Be patient. Serve others. Add value to everything. It may be a year or three but somebody will notice, and when they do, be ready to jump. Be happy.

I’ve been watching these incredibly sad visions for a month or so now. Not sure whether it’s because I’m Australian but I’ve so many questions. It’s almost like some really horrific movie. I see many nice cars driving past. People walking around who don’t appear to be on drugs. Mums with children. Police walking about. Needles everywhere and so many with bodies completely contorted, hunched over as though they’ve been frozen as they don’t seem to actually fall over and others are literally lying on or near the road. Is this a place where literally all addicts go to score fentanyl? Are these people all living where they’re standing or do some have proper homes where they go at night? There are also people in wheelchairs, so how do they manage things like the basic need of going to a toilet? And if the women are able to get “dates” to be able to buy the drugs, how do the men score theirs? And all the shops, another thing that baffles me. Who would even want to go into that area to shop for clothes etc? Is there violence among them?
Sorry, I realise I’m asking so much but I find this to be so horrifically surreal. So overwhelmingly sad.

Yeah, they can prevent crime against businesses and people who live and work there, maybe make some arrests, but that will do jackshit to solve the problem.
