- Doing some testing this week trying to make a splined shaft on the big Cincinnati 24" metal shaper.
I also show using the surface grinder and a cutter grinder fixture being used to grind tooling for the lathe and shaper. Huge thanks to my Patrons for sticking with me.

Probably the coolest use of a shaper that I've seen on UA-cam yet.
Fourth time watching this video for a hobbyist trying to get to your level it's a bit of a challenge thanks for the content
Been watching wood craftsmen, mechanics, portable sawmill operaters, semi truck restorers, heavy machinery operators and welders. You just added a whole new category to my interests. You sir, are a true craftsman!
Steve, I've been watching your channel for a while now; through the acquisition of most of your machines. And I can clearly see how you have grown in your experience and knowledge in these machines. It is encouraging to guys who are just starting out, that knowledge comes with experience.
Your channel is also one of the best in production value as far as filming and camera placement and so on.
(The camping sequence is also very nice to see.)
I really enjoy your channel and I honestly believe it is one of the best out there.

This has been fascinating to watch. If you are making a batch of them it will be a very tedious job, I hope you charge enough for them.
If you are going to make several of these parts, you can mate a stepper motor to your rotary table and run it with an Arduino. I believe Stefan was in a similar situation and adapted his rotary table.
Thanks for demonstrating the use of a universal grinding fixture on a surface grinder. I hope to use that in the future.

Now you are ready to start manufacturing shift rods. I went camping on lake Houston when I was a teen and came home loaded with ticks our tent did not stand up to the rain and had to sleep on the top of the bait tanks in an old bait shed where we found a rattle snake and I was awake most of the night wondering if their was another. I never was interested in camping again.
Just love seeing other UA-cam stickers and tee shirt. Great minds think alike. Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Ideally, a hardened broach would be the way to go. Tooling and setup is what always takes the most time.
That was a great project to watch. Your son is lucky to have a Dad with mechanical skills as well as machinist skills.

Nice job Steve! You need a nice Cincinnati divining head.
The bolt allows a loose slide fit to tighten up to a press fit through the "pinch" action. If you used it in the loose state, your carefully crafted splines, and those on the shift arm, would be battered to uselessness VERY rapidly. A friend long ago neglected to tighten the pinch bolt on the kicker of his freshly rebuilt kawi H1, resulting in a smooth shaft and kick arm bore on his first kick. A shifter obviously isn't subject to that load, but it wouldn't last very long loose. By placing the pinch bolt within the shaft OD the compression of the fit becomes far more uniform, preventing only a few splines taking the working load.
Maybe think about some hardening so that the arm fails first. Great work, keep it up. 👍

From the quick browse I have done so far, you have a well equipped shop, and some great content which I shall be working my way through. I loved the tool sharpening aspect of this video for sure. Its always 10% of viewes or less in the 1st 24 hours. The longer the video runs the lower the percentage of people who like / thumbs up the video. Most people cant be bothered to click a button even if it helps the person they enjoy watching and keeps them in business.

Just a thought - Likes on YT aren't just a button click! Every liked video ends up in your channel's liked videos list so that if you [like] every video you like the list becomes so big that it is little value. In addition, if you clean up your liked list, all the likes go away; that's silly! This is something I really wish that UA-cam would change. If I really want to go back to a video I either put it in separate playlist or watch later.
@@SteveSummers Hi Steve I've been a subscriber for a while now and always enjoy your video's. I watch most of the popular machining channels out there and some of the smaller ones that I've found and enjoy. I also noticed that the likes run about 10% for everyone. It doesn't make any sense to me. When you are doing job shop type work everything takes forever I couldn't imagine trying to set up cameras, work around tripods and narrating also. Yes you guys do make some money by doing this and some do well but I doubt that if you figured how much you are making per hour it would not be that much. This community that we have here one You Tube is something very special. It is helping to keep the industrial arts alive. If someone makes a video with decent content in it at least I can press a button. Thanks for all that you do Andy

Great job Steve. I had to make up a splined blank to Cut internal Splines on a New Gear lever i had made from builit Alloy for a classic motor bike i was Building. I set up on the mill with the shaft mounted in the rotary table. Then shaped up a cut off wheel to spin in the chuck of the mill, To cut the splines. Worked out ok in the End. Very time consuming for sure. But Glad the shaper came in handy again for you. Cheers Dave from Australia

Chiggers... I remember them well! My brother and I, along with our cousins, used to spend summers in Louisville at my Grandparents. We usually camped in one of the horse fields in a tent. Good times!

I used to live in Indiana as a kid and when I would go hunting or just exploring in the woods I would always get chigger bites. Eventually, I found that tucking the pant legs into the socks and dusting the socks with sulphur powder was effective in avoiding the chigger bites.

You inspire me on every video you make! as a long time dirt bike rider I can appreciate the shifter shaft splines. I have purchased bikes where they had the shifter welded to the spline before. Sweet on the camping with your son. Yes, the ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes are very bad this year. I have to spray to work in the garden. Did some brush clearing and ended up with 42 chigger bites, even with 45% deet. I guess I just drink it next time, cause the spraying on the jeans/socks/shoes left a lot to be desired.
A straight tooth plain milling cutter you use a stationary finger to do
the teeth on the OD but
on a stagger tooth you need to slide the tooth over a stationary finger.
The point of the finger needs to be set to the wheel head and to the high point of the wheel. The point of the finger should be about 120 degrees included to give you a ramp to start the cutter .
Straight teeth are a lot easier.

Enjoyed. I just picked up a universal tool grinder to grind HSS on my surface grinder to use in the shaper so this video was perfect timing.
Great video - Makes me wonder if those splines are just a bit undersize for the job; but that wasn't your problem.
Never pass up those times with your kids as they seldom pass your way again! A lesson I took from the song "Cat's in the Cradle!"
So your wheel grind back toward the tooth behind lower the wheel to clear the area behind . Your using a good smaller cup wheel . It's easier to get between the teeth than a 5" wheel .

awesome dude. Im a tool and cuttergrinder and your doing it almost right. the milling cutters come in spacific widths. side grinding alters the width. facing the flutes and topping the diameter is the way to go unless widths are not important

I love your tool and cutter grinder, plus your surface grinder, I used to work in a tool room grinding cutters all day (years ago) and I agree with you it is one of the most cost saving tools in a workshop, I wish I had one now. (in my small home workshop)

Damn Fine Job !! I'd love to have that cutter/grinder ! In the past, I've often thought about getting one and setting up a shop. One could make some serious coin reworking mills, drills and cutters ! It probably paid for itself, just by you tuning up those mill cutters !!

I made a spline like this once (kind of) I made a single point cutting tool and rotated the shaft with the dividing head while spinning the top in the horizontal mill. It seemed to be working well until I got the call that he got a spare shaft and decided to weld his extension together...😢 A similar way to skin a cat I suppose, I just don't have a shaper.

If I had to make more than a couple of these, I would make a master (would that be a hob? I don't know for certain.) out of O1, drill through the center, then harden it.
Then I'd make a jig so it could spin.
Set a height stop, then chuck the work pieces up in a collet on the mill (or lathe, but I figure it'd be easier to hold the spin jig in the vise).
Wouldn't take more time to make the master and the jig than it would to make a few of them on the shaper with the dividing head.

Greetings Steve. Have you considered making a die that you could harden and use with your press to make those splines? I'm thinking of a round disk, drilled and internal splined, then heat treated and tempered. Turn the shaft out on the lathe, then press into the die to cut the splines all at once. Press the shaft out of the die, add the spring then weld to the shift arm. I'm sure you could crank out a half dozen or so an hour in small batches.

If you had a bunch of these to do could you make a "knurling" tool to use the lathe or maybe a die with internal splines to use on a hydraulic press?
Nice little project Steve! You did well. Sound like you may need to make a new plate, with the divisions you need, if you are going to make more of those.

Just wondering if a straight coarse knurling tool wouldn't do the same job. A lot faster and all done on the lathe. Good work and keep it up.
With the correct Knurled tool I would say yes. It would also be stronger I would guess.
That was my thought too, a well-built knurling tool and an annealed shaft would make quick work of it. And you can use the shaper to make the knurl.
