- Georgia’s Parliament has signed off on a controversial bill - sparking outrage in the capital.
In April, the government announced it was reviving legislation that would require media and non-government organisations to register themselves as foreign agents if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad.
That led to weeks of mass demonstrations.
The government says the law is needed to promote transparency and preserve sovereignty.
But critics say the bill drives Georgia closer to Russia.
How will it affect the country's hopes of joining the European Union?

whats wrong with transparency? there are laws like that even in central america, in campaigning, tax evasion, money laundering, draining resources, and to control meddling in politics. Coverup organizations are up to no good. ANY foreign donations or ownership should be known.
The same type of regulation exists in the US and other Western countries too.

@@galanis38It’s very east to check that FARA and other similar laws actually drastically differ from the one in Georgia, it mostly targets NGO’s and finances coming from western countries, while fully ignoring those in power, also laws can be modified, same thing happened in Russia, it started like a transparency law, now anyone who is deemed a foreign agent can’t participate in the elections, in some time jail time now sounds realistic, so no, other countries have different laws.

Everyone in the country and in the world agrees that russan style opression of civil society is bad.

Very curious case of Transparency international making a case against transparency.
Although this entire show is about how the law threatens civil society organizations, there are no discussions on which parts of this law is threatening.
The show itself is about innuendos and how the EU will not like this law.
There is nothing threatening to democracy when those who may possibly have an influence on political affairs are exposed. Even the US has its own FARA act. So, to call this a Russian ACT is just Narrative making.
