clemson did the same thing when they took Garrett Riley from TCU literally the day after they played in the national championship. Why is it so hard to understand that coaches want to work with, and players want to play for Dabo? maybe, just maybe, its a top level program thats just underperformed the last couple of years.
It's not a knock on PSU, but the draw is Dabo. Dabo is great to work for, pay his assistants, and has the resources to get it done. Clemson has an easier road to success. Not saying Allen wants an easy road but he doesn't have to contend with Michigan, Ohio St., Oregon every year. Franklin supposedly not easy to work for. Allen wasn't happy about being put in the box. Contrary to what was said ad kind if glanced over is "talent". Clemson's defensive talent at least equal to PSU. It's easier to recruit at Clemsob as well. I don't mean Clemson is a bigger draw for HS kids cause Penn st has a base in PA. that Clemson cannot contend with but there are other factors. Clemson is a force in Ga., FL, Al, NC. We've started pulling guys out of Texas as well. I think Clemson has a presence in Florida and Atlanta Metro that is tough to match for anyone outside of those states. But really how it's easier is "quantity". Clemson extends less than 100 offers per year. Dabo is VERY selective. There can be high 4 or even 5 star kids in his backyard and they will not offer. They have to fit the culture. Because of that assistants on the recruiting trail don't have to be in contact with a list of 30-40 kids. Position coaches may only have 6-8 guys they are actively recruiting. For a Clemson offer, the kid must be seen in camp, visit and/or in person with coach visit. Not a single offer is extended just because this guy or that guy is the #1 DE and he's less than 100 miles down the road Most Clemson fans are excited about this hire. We literally were a good defensive coordinator away from being top 5 this year. I have yet to see anyone that is objective say this is not a great hire. If yall are happy to get rid of him, I thank you! Oh also, I think location has a lot to do with it too. Allen has 2 grown daughters that live in the Carolinas. I'm sure he and his wife would live to be closer to their grandchildren. Who can blame him for that. In addition, I'd say he will get at least a 200k raise. Dabo will pay his guys. Brent Venables and Chad Morris were right at the top of the chart for OC and DC salary. Garrett Riley made over 2 mil this year. I'd say Allen will be at least 1.75m but probably over 1.85m. I think he was set to make 1.6m w/PSU for 2025. Go Tigers.
Recruiting areas don't mean much anymore with NIL. Penn State brings in more revenue and has a bigger football budget. You're not going to convince me Clemson is a better job in the NIL era.
Worried??? Hardly. Liked Allen but he made a move that he and his family thought was best. You podcast and media people love to degrade Franklin but he has been very good at replacing those that have moved on from his coaching staff. Hoping Franklin hits a home run with whom ever he has in mind for the next DC!
Tom Allen is a good coach but Penn States personnel really helped too. Tons of talent all over the place. They were great with Manny Diaz too. They're also returning a ton of talent including Zane Durant, Dani Denis-Sutton, AJ Harris, Wheatley... Penn State's defense should be fine. Tom Allen's family is also in the Carolinas... It screams closer to family... not something went on in the locker room.
I miss Diaz couldn't care one bit if Allen stayed or left he more replaceable. We need a coach who can relate with younger people and can understand what he says. Plus recruiter upgrade.
Clemson has a lower cost of living and a warmer climate, and they have a way better offense than Penn State, which means they make a serious run next year with a good defense. They don't have to contend with Ohio State every year, and Clemson will pay him more money. He also has family there. It makes complete sense
@@wad9799well probably do make more money because of ticket sales but what he's referring to is that Clemson is gonna pay him more. It's probably not much
Other then having family there, everything you said was wrong. I live close to Clemson, so I know about the cost of living. They don't pay alot of NIL and their offense is suspect against good teams.
@@dorianhenderson3881to say the offense was suspect when the defence couldn’t stop citadel from almost coming back is hilarious. The offense is not at all the issue. If you don’t believe that, then you need to look at the stats of Klubnik (top 10 overall in passing with only Ward and Sanders throwing more TDs and tied with multiple guys in least INTs) and the freshman receivers burning corners left and right through the season, opening up Williams. The run game was strong as well until Mafah had to play through neck and shoulder injuries for the last half of the season. The issue was always the defence not getting and stops whatsoever thanks to the horrible play calling and lack of adjustments from former DC Wes Goodwin.
Also Pennstate fans are happy he was too simplified and people who think this is bad are people who didn’t watch every game of the season. He was terrible in soft coverage calls and and was consistently out coached in the first half.
saying that Penn State had a more talented team than clemson this year is INSANE. look at literally any talent index there is. literally any of them. its not even close. Penn State had a much better defense, and that is why dabo stole yall's coach. talent is not the issue at clemson, and it never has been.
Best DE (from Philly) , best TE (from VA), two 1000 yard RBs (from PA & VA), top ten on defense, much larger fanbase and alum association, CFB semi-finalist, etc. And if the SEC is losing its prowess, then what does that say about the ACC? SMU is ACC, right?
Who gives a shit. Allen looked great with second half adjustments against average coordinators. In the playoffs as well as against Ohio State, he was lost. Against Oregon I don’t even know if he came off the bus until the second half. Plus never mind the fact he gave ND the momentum by playing soft against a back up QB and felt like Europe getting blitzkeig’d by the Germans in WW2 to start the second half with zero answers. Buh bye.
This is going to be an internal hire… There are 3 guys already on staff that would do an excellent job. Anthony Poindexter is at the top of the list. Barnes and Connor are both young but two of the best position coaches in the country. Connor was in the booth working the defensive helmet mic for Allen due to Allen’s voice issues…
Good for Clemson. He’s a good defensive coach. He was not better than Manny Dias. In fact, the defense may have taken a step back slightly. There were some communication issues with Tom Allen early on as a DC. In fact, James Franklin moved him to the booth early in the season and installed Dan Conner on the field to improve communications and coach the LB’s. Yes Franklin is demanding and likely too demanding for Tom Allen 24/7 at this juncture of his career. As others have said, his two daughters and grandchildren live in South Carolina. Tom Allen’s outward faith also matches better with Dabo culturally. It was a mutual parting of the ways. Good luck to Tom Allen. Penn State will be fine at DC and likely has it’s replacement DC already in sight.
PSUs defense wasn’t coached all that great TBH. They had a lot of talented players that masked a lot of problems. There were several plays every game where the defense was way out of position often leaving WRs and TEs uncovered.
@@bradishler5967 got sent to the press box bc the players could not understand him in their helmets had to get a translator around the bowling green game
@TrentWiegert either way I don't think losing Allen hurts if they find a guy who calls similar defense. The talent is already there. Maybe poach a guy and luck out on a few transfers. I doubt anyone follows Allen as most of these guys have been there outside of the few transfers
You'll need an On3 or Lions247 sub. It's well publicized that his daughters live in SC. His family didn't even move to State College with him. Stop all the conspiracy stuff
Seriously, guys. It's a culture issue, pure and simple. Allen is super-religious, like Dabo, and the secular environment in state college was almost 100% not a fit. It was not about the money: he was making plenty sitting on his ass after being fired by Indiana. Also, he is looking to live near his grown daughters in the Carolinas and is never going looking for a HC job. Lastly. As far as recruiting. Not one of the LBs were recruited by him. In fact, I do not know a single player he was 100%;responsible bringing in. If someone knows of one drop the name here. Not one of his players or recruits followed him from Indiana.
Tom Allen was outcoached in many games giving up huge chunk plays and long 3rd downs even against weak teams. PSU had a lot of depth of talent. Not sure you guys watch these games that close. He got outcoached by ND after the first quarter. Also Franklin wasn’t losing ga,es over the years because of QB play….he gets outcoached in the second have of every single big game
Maybe, just maybe, Penn state didn’t try very hard to retain him??? Why would we be worried when, right after this news, our star defensive players announced returning? Maybe Allen wants to be close to his daughter who live in Carolina? Maybe an outwardly passionately Christian guy wants to coach with another like Dabo? We’ve had a top 10 defense with 3 different coordinators over the past 4 years lol. Ask Penn State fans- Not worried.
Tom Allen wasn't that great of a DC or HC at Indiana and in fact he got fired as HC and we just grabbed him at Penn State because we needed a DC and he was available. Penn State could have gotten any DC and made them look good because the players themselves were great. All the games we lost he never made the needed corrections at halftime. I don't think he makes leaps and strides at Clemson ! Tom Allen didn't make the defense at Penn State he inherited it !
First Penn State does not have a better team, Clemson is stacked for 2025 with 4 & 5 star playing on both sides of the ball. Clemson’s trouble in 2024 was the play calls, if that would have been different Clemson would have looked like a different team. The work life balance at Clemson is far better than most other teams, Dabo has proven that when he has great DC’s they are often develop to the next level, there is a reason that BV and TE stayed for 10 years. Plus TA’s son is coming along to be an analyst, his daughters live in SC, this move has his entire family close together again and it’s warm here. He is coming to a team that is already built for him to work with. Not to mention Clemson is the more relevant team, one year doesn’t make you relevant, but 6 years straight does. Dabo is making moves bc his eyes are set on being a National Championship again. This is not a lateral move, it’s actually a step above. Dabo made 2 mistakes when BV and TE left, don’t discount Dabo doesn’t know what he’s doing, it should be clear to everyone, he’s done it before and is doing it again, he’s building another National Championship team. When was the last time Penn State made it to the National Championship game and finished it. There isn’t a comparison. Not to mention Clemson is beautiful and most people have houses on the water. This is the best move for Clemson and Tom Allen, Clemson is a family and they also involve the Children of the coaches to have opportunities to be involved in many events and activities! I’m not sure why so many people are scratching their heads or having debates over why the move, Dabo has done this many times throughout his tenure, this is not new. To bad most people have already counted Dabo out for having 3 less desirable seasons, most teams would love to have 9 and 10 win seasons , but everyone was still saying Dabos’ run was over. Well I personally think most teams should be taking notes and be scared of Clemson in 2025 because make no mistake Clemson is now set to come for anyone in their path.
