It really isn’t a bad logo. BUT the logo was too sleek and modern for our city. We take pride on being rugged and hard workers. Baldwin didn’t understand this city and tried to remake the team’s brand into something that would have fit better into his LA roots.
Honestly, I think the New Jersey Devils should have kept the Garden State Green in their look. It was unique. Far too many teams have red, white and black.
I’d say that the Alberta trend to boring, where Edmonton and Calgary dropped colorful, vibrant jerseys that both had success in for much more tame, tuned down jerseys should get an honorable mention. Thankfully both have since been corrected.
I personally did like those jerseys but I would of introduced them a lot differently and brought them In as Third jerseys instead of full out switch over and the same could of been said about most of the rebrands and it would of been a more ideal marketing plan to see if the audience liked the change first
The Oilers current alternate jerseys with the "nearly black blue" and "nearly illegible orange" are by far the worst jerseys in the NHL right now. I hate that they tried shoving them down our throats in the playoffs last year because they are hot garbage.
I agree about those current dark blue/orange numbers & letters...little contrast, very difficult to see the names & numbers, especially on smaller source tablets. The Oilers should've stuck with the orange one's from Connor's rookie season; they had a darker, burnt orange, rather than the current, brighter, Adidas offering. I also prefer the warmer blue & numbered shoulders, with the wider, WHA era, middle stripe.
@@loilt5091 The all black Oilers uniforms are simply awful but many years ago they wore uniforms that were much worse looking. They were the "Spawn" jerseys, designed by comic book creator Todd McFarlane that are best forgotten. Their hated rivals, the Flames, around the same time also wore black with a silly looking horse at the front shooting fire out of his mouth. That too was awful. The worst of all time had to be Vancouver with the black and yellow V that went across the front. That thankfully only lasted only a couple of years but the Canucks have had other bad designs ever since and can never seem to get it right except when they wear their early-70s stick design. Those are the only ones I like.
I actually like the robo-Penguin jerseys. I'm a Caps fan so I have a lot of bad memories associated with the robo-Pen but in terms of colors and look -- I thought they were very sharp. Especially the shoulders on the home jerseys.
When I 1st got into hockey the robo-penguin was the 1st penguins logo I saw. Thought it was sleek despite the team name, I mean "penguins", c'mon. When they changed back I laughed my head off for months. It's a freaking cartoon now! Not intimidating in the slightest!

I'm so glad I discovered this channel recently. This is so well done, it feels like big budget productions with a whole crew. Keep going, my man. We appreciate. That being said, I kind of always liked the robo penguin. And I'm a sucker for powder or baby blue kits so I liked the Panthers' one too. I could not agree more about how the nicknames in letters are NOT a logo. Those are the worst!
DAMN RIGHT! on the Robo Penguin! That's when I, a Louisiana boy, started watching NHL and the Pens. I have two of those jerseys and when they went back it missed me off, thinking they just changed it. Ha. I was so stupid back then before the internets.
Great research! The Panthers powder blue jersey was not bad at all... aside from them botching the team's color pallet. I also remembering someone defended the "Guardian Project" online as "The world's best comic book company is partnering with the world's best hockey league, what could go wrong?"
I would've also included the Ducks dropping the "Mighty Ducks" name and adopting the duck foot logo. I much prefer the traditional logo that was used in the movies.

I really like the Islanders Stadium jersey tbh, and I remember getting somewhat excited at the superheroes (they were dumb, but I kinda liked em anyways), I remember they revealed one per day for a month and some of em had cool designs
I still think the Islanders got it right with the fisherman designs, as an outsider anyway. I get the rejection of it from a fan perspective but, they have a charm the original NY doesn't to me. Wish they'd at least bring it back as a third.

May I suggest a new series. “Inaugural season hype” where you take a summary of new teams introductions into the league with supposed concept art of logos and colors. The theories fans thought the names would be and just the general hype of the new teams concluding in what the end of their first year was
One thing I've noticed is that people tend to like what ever logo a team had when they were watching as kids. You'll notice that the only people that like the red and black buffalo or the Islanders fisherman are people who were kids during that era, like our buddy Neil from the Post 2 Post channel.
I’ll be honest, even though the flag was incorrect, the Hurricanes alternate logo was still a damn good logo. I especially liked the triangle in the background as it is a reference to the Research Triangle.
1. Here on the left-coast of Canada, the Sabres black/red jersey was extremely popular... it seemed like every 3rd or 4th beer-league team was wearing it. 2. The Robo-Penguin is a cautionary tale about messing with the mojo of success, punctuated by the dual Stanley Cup victory bookends to that era. 3. It REALLY seems like the NHL has a secret mandate to have at least one annoying jersey in circulation each season. Tell me I'm wrong. ;P
4:41 I love that player’s face looking right at what the logo resembles that is HILARIOUS! By the way I’m a huge fan of both Buffalo rebrands. There are clever elements like somewhat of a B in the bottom left side of the goat head, and a sword in the blue of the slug, with the eye area as the handle. I think they should’ve kept either one cuz that’s when the team was most successful.
Hey Chris, here's my take on these classic clangers: - STORM FLAG: Who would have thought that the whole point was missed with that design? I did not know that there was a negative space in the current alternate logo that perfectly replicated the outline of North Carolina - ROBO-LOGO: I actually like the Robo-Penguin, to be honest. The Swindon Chill from the old English Premier Hockey League used this as the basis of their logo - FLY AWAY: This Panthers jersey was based on a commercial partnership with a budget airline? I wasn't aware of that. The chosen logo for that jersey looks quite bland, but not as bland as their current logo - ANATOMY LESSON: Oh boy, the Mooterus. I really feel for Stars fans, especially with their Reebok Edge jerseys that looked more like basketball uni's with added sleeves - CUT, PRINT: Trust the Sublimate era to coincide with the infamous Third Jersey Program. There were some good ones - and then there were the likes of the Bruins Pooh Bear tribute and the Burger King jersey - SLIMY: The Goat Head is still popular among Sabres fans, and it is also used by the Basingstoke Bison (last time I checked). The Buffaslug (I actually refer to it as "The Bearded Worm") was a total own goal - COMING UP SHORT: Why would anyone want to shorten the nickname of their chosen hockey club, when the nickname is already a ready reckoner for easy identification? I can only guess this was to cut down on the number of syllables, but why does "monosyllabic" have five syllables? - THE TRIFECTA: A real hat-trick of howlers. The Fisherman logo was a total anachronism (I refer to it as the Captain Birds Eye look), and it looks like the jerseys suffered from a serious bout of sea-sickness. No wonder Mike Milbury wasn't too pleased. I'm not keen on either of the black jerseys - the first one looked as if a basketball jersey was mistakenly placed on top of a hockey jersey, and the second one when they were playing in Brooklyn just purely because they were playing in the same place as the Brooklyn Nets (another colossal sporting mistake, I might add) - MAKE IT POP: Or, how to fleece more dollars off your fanbase just by playing a hockey game outside - NO SAVING THIS: Good grief. Good God almighty. And to make it worse, the Guardians Project had Stan Lee's dabs all over it. Someone please wipe this from my memory. That's me for now. Thanks for reading.
Excluding any font logos a lot of the designs on this list are hell of a lot more creative then current designs they came Out with recently like Smashville and the New Jersey Devils “Jersey” .
I am still kicking myself 24 years later for not buying the last remaining pro jersey in that design when I worked security for the Calgary Flames. I could have had the Away Islanders Fisherman pro for under $100 Canadian, but stupidly figured it would still be there in a week.
Also, being a Flyers fan I like that they've never F'd with their logo. They F'd with their uniforms(I hated the all black) but they never messed with the logo.
Oh, how soon we forget the 3d monstrosity that was on the only orange flyers jersey for a long time before they finallybwent back tontheir rightful color with the edge era.
As a designer and hockey lover I absolutely adore this channel but as a life long stars fan there are alot of us that aren't crazy about that new logo, design and overall look. For me personally I think they need to lose the silver and bring the gold back somehow? It's difficult cause you don't have alot to work with, you got: Dallas,TX, they used to be the North stars...uhhh...green and gold? Or yellow? Which the Minnesota wild kind of rock now so you can't use that, so when it comes to designing for Dallas your options are kind of limited but I'd like to see another revival and more Dallas Stars ideas/concepts bringing back the gold possibly.
*a lot *lose The Stars really should have come up with a completely new logo and colour scheme when they moved to Dallas from Minesota in the first place, as that whole drawn-out process left a bad taste in the mouths of many NHL fans, and by keeping colours that were significant to Minneapolis-St Paul, while moving to Dallas, which had no connection to those colours as a city, they made it look like a carpetbagger move. That said, it was still better than the Avalanche's colours, logo and jersey design.
I really liked the Panthers two tone blue jersey. Only problem is it came out not too long after Pitts brought back their two tone circle logo. Otherwise I want them to bring it back as a third with their current look
I'll add one: When the NHL came back from a lockout they had the "Are You Ready" ad that featured ladies in lingerie lusting over various players and players opening treasure chests that contained a glowing Cup. That was too easy to make fun of, and that ad campaign didn't last long. As far as jersey's go I haven't given up on script jerseys. I think the old black Penguins jersey with Pittsburgh scripted diagonally is beautiful, and isn't the whole point of third jerseys to be a bit out there?
The Penguins' script jersey was NOT their third, it was the away jersey to match the white Robe-penguin jersey. The sublimated stripe RoboPen was the third jersey, then they phased out the script jersey and used the sublimated RoboPen as the road jersey.
i still have my guardian project graphic novel, its one of my most prized possessions. I loved everything surronding the 2011 all star game except the game, since it was at half speed. Ironic that "the thrasher" had abilities based on jet propulsion , since the thrashers moved to winnipeg
As an Islanders fan, I very much disagree with the description of the stadium series jersey as a "widely disliked design". Most Islanders fans loved this jersey which was why it replaced the first black jersey as the alternate jersey until the move to the Barclays Center. In fact, "the follow up third jersey" that you mentioned was a step in the right direction is very similar to the stadium series jersey.
Real question: do Edmonton fans really like their current third? The navy one with orange and no white? I feel like the lack of contrast really kills the jersey, it just doesn't look good! I also hated the Stadium Series jerseys when Pittsburgh and Philly faced each other with jerseys devoid of white. The Flyers' one for some reason had a shade of orange that was really dark and it didn't look good on TV at all. Unrelated, but I also love the Robo-Penguin, especially that late-era black jersey they had with it. Very 90's, but in a good way.
I like the dark blue oilers jersey. Most people who I have asked say they do aswell. A lack of contrast between dark blue and bright orange? They are literally opposites on the colour wheel and opposing vibrancy. If you don’t like it that’s fine and I’d also definitely be open to going back to the royal blue
@@jrbro8217 my problem is that the orange feels too dark against the very dark blue: I feel the logo really doesn't pop off well. A real contrast would have been having white trim against the midnight blue. Edmonton has shown several times that blue and orange can be a killer combination on a jersey - that brighter orange third they had when McDavid joined, before they went to orange full time is one of my all-time favourites - but this one doesn't do it for me.
Oilers fan here. The current “street inspired” third jersey (whatever that means) is among my least favourite, along with their RBK pyjama jerseys. It’s grown on me the more I see it in action, but it exacerbates that the new dark blue looks *black* on many broadcasts. It’s also quite close to breaking legibility/accessibility best practices due to the lack of while outlines (it does pass, but barely). I rarely applaud jersey designs that change a team’s palette, and this one commits further to their recent change. Let fans at least wear correct team colours if they have an older jersey, y’know? So many kids must feel like poor chumps when their colours don’t match their team anymore. Watching 80’s games you’ll notice that not a single fan in the crowd is wearing a jersey though, so this is a more recent consideration I suppose - than for teams like Vancouver who have changed palettes habitually.

I'm a casual jersey collector; (though not enough for being caught in the reverse retro thing); most of the jerseys I bought in the last few years were Stadium jerseys: Love the Red Wings, Wild, Sharks jerseys for example. And I did like the Islanders' fisherman to be honest. But I guess the big takeaway from this type of discussion is the boring 'to each their own': I see people here liking what you described as hated by many. In my case, as a Sharks fans, I hate the return of the old logo and grey colour on jerseys - but many seem happy with that ?! And my favourite Sharks jersey is the Stadium Series - despite of the weird logo rendering.
In probably the last 4 years the fisherman has been embraced by many to be one of the most creative designs the team ever did and has gained a cult following amongst team fans and hockey fans alike

I've always thought that 3rd jersies should get a free pass. The team isn't committing to it, it's more of a test drive. The biggest brand mistake, in my opinion, was the Coyotes changing their logo to the generic coyote head. Luckily, it's been changed back for the coming season.
Vegas gold was definitely a worse branding decision than the robopen. Disunifying themselves with the Steelers and Pirates hinted at a potential relocation
Great video! I think this is just a matter of creativity versus traditionalistic. I personally would like to see new and creative designs rather than being very conservative by recycling old designs over and over again. I think this shows lack of creativity and it becomes really boring if the same jersey designs are overly used.
Nah, the Jet Blue Panthers jerseys are still spoken off amongst us Panthers fans and there are a bunch who actually like them. I myself own a game worn one of them and it's pretty nice. I wouldn't say it's the right fit for the Panthers but the jersey and logos themselfs are fine. Too close to the Penguins and Blue Jackets alternates though..
The funny thing about the Islanders fisherman logo, is this video is the first time that I have ever seen that brand of frozen fishsticks, but it’s also very similar to Highliner fishsticks logo with “captain highliner”
Agreed. I always thought that logo was awesome. I mean, that is what an 'Islander' is. That said, I think most of the blowback from Islanders fans probably falls into the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' bucket. Their unis were already some of the best in the game. No need to change it.

As an Islanders fan I can tell you those Fisherman jerseys were horrendous to look at and the years they wore them were the darkest in team history. I think the unis they wear now are the best and all other 3rd jerseys, stadium series, etc. we’re pure crap. I’m surprised when you recapped all the bad Islanders jerseys you omitted the starburst orange one and the Reebok edge travesties. 🤮
The Fisherman jersey coincided with a dark time for the Islanders, so a lot of Isles fans associate the jerseys with those bad teams. That’s why it gets more hate than it does
Seems to be a generational thing to me. People who were kids when those logos came out have a sense of nostalgia for them. But at the time they were mostly not well received by long time fans.

I'd put the Flames on this list too. Ditching the classic uni's in the 90's for those weird stripe jerseys, then to the Blasty jersey, then once Dark jerseys became every NHL's home uni, we go back to a gorgeous red jersey and make a run to the finals. Calling it the C of Red. That's a massive turnaround
I think the Sabres goat head is the greatest logo in sports history. The majority of Sabres fans, while they might not have liked it at the time, have grown to appreciate it. A lot of great memories in the black and red. We would love to see it come back as a 3rd jersey.
Anything other than the damn Mooterus and the Stars would probably still be using that jersey design today, I always loved and had a weird attachment to it
As a kid in the 90's, pre-internet, I absolutely adored the sublimated jerseys, especially the Burger King. I kid you not, I saw it on tv highlights, and for the next few weeks I wondered if I had dreamt them up. I also enjoyed C I absolutely adore the robopenguin, but its dark sweater companion with diagonal lettering was a bit of a miss. The cardinal sin of Penguins jersey, IMO, was changing its saturated yellow to piss yellow. I don't think this is a blunder per se, but there are two trends that I'm quite happy have vanished: jersey piping, and desaturated/dark looks. Black Oilers, black Flames, black Sabres, black Flyers... all of these teams' saturated color schemes work so much better. Unlike other major sports, hockey takes place on a mostly white surface, it makes vibrant colors pop out so much, what a shame it was not to have these colors from the late 90's to the early 2010's. I'm so glad to have orange Flyers, red Flames and royal blue Sabres back, they look so much better, and I think it helps brand recognition as well. I'm not madly in love with the Stars' logo, and I think they should've kept a mustard yellow like the North Stars had, but they now own green in the NHL, no doubt about it.
Funny enough I actually own an authentic "Sens" Jersey and it is actually rather nice in person! Though there some odd design decisions like the red side stripes that swoosh with the double bands on each sleeve... its a bit of a mess. If it was just simplified a bit, I don't think it be mocked all that hard. I have a similar opinion about the "Canes" and "Bolts" jerseys as they are a bit busy. The "Canes" one being the most visually appealing of the three, but does not mesh well with the home or alternate jerseys... I just hope if they ditch the current home jersey for the Alternate they do a white version of it instead of keeping the "Canes" jersey around as the away jersey for brand consistency reasons.

It's funny how things change, I know a lot of islanders fans, especially on the under 30 side that love the fisherman logo and wish that they would bring it back. They keep making merch with it because people eat it up

The original Penguins colors were light blue and with white and black trim and different variations of blue until 1980(from light to indigo to dark blue). They changed to black and gold beginning in the 1980-81 season to match the Pirates and Stealers(who both had come off of championships). #4: How did you leave out the Devils black and white jerseys with "Jersey" in the front? #2: Not for nothing but the Devils need to make the green and red permanent again. #1: Not for nothing but the Preds and Wild superheroes looked badass.
Good catch. The Penguins colors were blue back when they entered the league in 1967. I think those early uniforms were their best looking ones. Of course nobody tops the Blackhawks Indian head sweater.
An amusing thing about the Guardian Project: the Thrasher was themed around a fighter jet and would have easily been able to be recolored into the Jet if the campaign had continued.

New ownership wanted to step away from the cartoonish Disney Look when they took over.
Since the Ducks won the Cup with that jersey, they will be bringing it back at some point.

The “Goat Head” is a great logo IMO. It would look great in the current colours on a 3rd jersey.

One MAJOR blunder that you missed was the infamous “Seven V’s Of Vancouver” uniforms from the late 70s/early 80s

DAMN RIGHT! on the Robo Penguin! That's when I, a Louisiana boy, started watching NHL and the Pens. I have two of those jerseys and when they went back it missed me off, thinking they just changed it. Ha. I was so stupid back then before the internets.
Great research! The Panthers powder blue jersey was not bad at all... aside from them botching the team's color pallet. I also remembering someone defended the "Guardian Project" online as "The world's best comic book company is partnering with the world's best hockey league, what could go wrong?"
The jerseys were decent, but that logo is horrible in its design.
I would've also included the Ducks dropping the "Mighty Ducks" name and adopting the duck foot logo. I much prefer the traditional logo that was used in the movies.
The problem was, that Disney owned the “Mighty Ducks” name and logo, and, when their contract expired with the NHL, it wasn’t able to be used anymore.
To each their own. I've always thought the Penguins logo on this list was their best one.

I still think the Islanders got it right with the fisherman designs, as an outsider anyway. I get the rejection of it from a fan perspective but, they have a charm the original NY doesn't to me. Wish they'd at least bring it back as a third.

May I suggest a new series. “Inaugural season hype” where you take a summary of new teams introductions into the league with supposed concept art of logos and colors. The theories fans thought the names would be and just the general hype of the new teams concluding in what the end of their first year was
One thing I've noticed is that people tend to like what ever logo a team had when they were watching as kids. You'll notice that the only people that like the red and black buffalo or the Islanders fisherman are people who were kids during that era, like our buddy Neil from the Post 2 Post channel.
Dude the Goat Head and Dallas Stars uterus logo were so sick. Honestly just bring them back.. lol

I’ll be honest, even though the flag was incorrect, the Hurricanes alternate logo was still a damn good logo. I especially liked the triangle in the background as it is a reference to the Research Triangle.
1. Here on the left-coast of Canada, the Sabres black/red jersey was extremely popular... it seemed like every 3rd or 4th beer-league team was wearing it.
2. The Robo-Penguin is a cautionary tale about messing with the mojo of success, punctuated by the dual Stanley Cup victory bookends to that era.
3. It REALLY seems like the NHL has a secret mandate to have at least one annoying jersey in circulation each season. Tell me I'm wrong. ;P

By the way I’m a huge fan of both Buffalo rebrands. There are clever elements like somewhat of a B in the bottom left side of the goat head, and a sword in the blue of the slug, with the eye area as the handle. I think they should’ve kept either one cuz that’s when the team was most successful.
I think the buffaslug logo would have looked cooler if it was white. Making it banana yellow ruined it.
Hey Chris, here's my take on these classic clangers:
- STORM FLAG: Who would have thought that the whole point was missed with that design? I did not know that there was a negative space in the current alternate logo that perfectly replicated the outline of North Carolina
- ROBO-LOGO: I actually like the Robo-Penguin, to be honest. The Swindon Chill from the old English Premier Hockey League used this as the basis of their logo
- FLY AWAY: This Panthers jersey was based on a commercial partnership with a budget airline? I wasn't aware of that. The chosen logo for that jersey looks quite bland, but not as bland as their current logo
- ANATOMY LESSON: Oh boy, the Mooterus. I really feel for Stars fans, especially with their Reebok Edge jerseys that looked more like basketball uni's with added sleeves
- CUT, PRINT: Trust the Sublimate era to coincide with the infamous Third Jersey Program. There were some good ones - and then there were the likes of the Bruins Pooh Bear tribute and the Burger King jersey
- SLIMY: The Goat Head is still popular among Sabres fans, and it is also used by the Basingstoke Bison (last time I checked). The Buffaslug (I actually refer to it as "The Bearded Worm") was a total own goal
- COMING UP SHORT: Why would anyone want to shorten the nickname of their chosen hockey club, when the nickname is already a ready reckoner for easy identification? I can only guess this was to cut down on the number of syllables, but why does "monosyllabic" have five syllables?
- THE TRIFECTA: A real hat-trick of howlers. The Fisherman logo was a total anachronism (I refer to it as the Captain Birds Eye look), and it looks like the jerseys suffered from a serious bout of sea-sickness. No wonder Mike Milbury wasn't too pleased. I'm not keen on either of the black jerseys - the first one looked as if a basketball jersey was mistakenly placed on top of a hockey jersey, and the second one when they were playing in Brooklyn just purely because they were playing in the same place as the Brooklyn Nets (another colossal sporting mistake, I might add)
- MAKE IT POP: Or, how to fleece more dollars off your fanbase just by playing a hockey game outside
- NO SAVING THIS: Good grief. Good God almighty. And to make it worse, the Guardians Project had Stan Lee's dabs all over it. Someone please wipe this from my memory.

The negative space outline in the current Carolina third seems like an homage to how negative space was used in the great Hartford Whalers logo.
Excluding any font logos a lot of the designs on this list are hell of a lot more creative then current designs they came

I am still kicking myself 24 years later for not buying the last remaining pro jersey in that design when I worked security for the Calgary Flames. I could have had the Away Islanders Fisherman pro for under $100 Canadian, but stupidly figured it would still be there in a week.

As a designer and hockey lover I absolutely adore this channel but as a life long stars fan there are alot of us that aren't crazy about that new logo, design and overall look. For me personally I think they need to lose the silver and bring the gold back somehow? It's difficult cause you don't have alot to work with, you got: Dallas,TX, they used to be the North stars...uhhh...green and gold? Or yellow? Which the Minnesota wild kind of rock now so you can't use that, so when it comes to designing for Dallas your options are kind of limited but I'd like to see another revival and more Dallas Stars ideas/concepts bringing back the gold possibly.

The Stars really should have come up with a completely new logo and colour scheme when they moved to Dallas from Minesota in the first place, as that whole drawn-out process left a bad taste in the mouths of many NHL fans, and by keeping colours that were significant to Minneapolis-St Paul, while moving to Dallas, which had no connection to those colours as a city, they made it look like a carpetbagger move.
That said, it was still better than the Avalanche's colours, logo and jersey design.
I really liked the Panthers two tone blue jersey. Only problem is it came out not too long after Pitts brought back their two tone circle logo. Otherwise I want them to bring it back as a third with their current look

I'll add one: When the NHL came back from a lockout they had the "Are You Ready" ad that featured ladies in lingerie lusting over various players and players opening treasure chests that contained a glowing Cup. That was too easy to make fun of, and that ad campaign didn't last long. As far as jersey's go I haven't given up on script jerseys. I think the old black Penguins jersey with Pittsburgh scripted diagonally is beautiful, and isn't the whole point of third jerseys to be a bit out there?
The Penguins' script jersey was NOT their third, it was the away jersey to match the white Robe-penguin jersey. The sublimated stripe RoboPen was the third jersey, then they phased out the script jersey and used the sublimated RoboPen as the road jersey.
i still have my guardian project graphic novel, its one of my most prized possessions. I loved everything surronding the 2011 all star game except the game, since it was at half speed. Ironic that "the thrasher" had abilities based on jet propulsion , since the thrashers moved to winnipeg
As an Islanders fan, I very much disagree with the description of the stadium series jersey as a "widely disliked design". Most Islanders fans loved this jersey which was why it replaced the first black jersey as the alternate jersey until the move to the Barclays Center. In fact, "the follow up third jersey" that you mentioned was a step in the right direction is very similar to the stadium series jersey.

Myself and a lot of other Panthers fans adore that Jet Blue jersey and I am very fortunate to own one. It’s one of my favorites in my collection.

Real question: do Edmonton fans really like their current third? The navy one with orange and no white? I feel like the lack of contrast really kills the jersey, it just doesn't look good! I also hated the Stadium Series jerseys when Pittsburgh and Philly faced each other with jerseys devoid of white. The Flyers' one for some reason had a shade of orange that was really dark and it didn't look good on TV at all.
Unrelated, but I also love the Robo-Penguin, especially that late-era black jersey they had with it. Very 90's, but in a good way.
I like the dark blue oilers jersey. Most people who I have asked say they do aswell. A lack of contrast between dark blue and bright orange? They are literally opposites on the colour wheel and opposing vibrancy. If you don’t like it that’s fine and I’d also definitely be open to going back to the royal blue
@@jrbro8217 my problem is that the orange feels too dark against the very dark blue: I feel the logo really doesn't pop off well. A real contrast would have been having white trim against the midnight blue. Edmonton has shown several times that blue and orange can be a killer combination on a jersey - that brighter orange third they had when McDavid joined, before they went to orange full time is one of my all-time favourites - but this one doesn't do it for me.

Oilers fan here. The current “street inspired” third jersey (whatever that means) is among my least favourite, along with their RBK pyjama jerseys. It’s grown on me the more I see it in action, but it exacerbates that the new dark blue looks *black* on many broadcasts. It’s also quite close to breaking legibility/accessibility best practices due to the lack of while outlines (it does pass, but barely). I rarely applaud jersey designs that change a team’s palette, and this one commits further to their recent change. Let fans at least wear correct team colours if they have an older jersey, y’know? So many kids must feel like poor chumps when their colours don’t match their team anymore. Watching 80’s games you’ll notice that not a single fan in the crowd is wearing a jersey though, so this is a more recent consideration I suppose - than for teams like Vancouver who have changed palettes habitually.

I'm a casual jersey collector; (though not enough for being caught in the reverse retro thing); most of the jerseys I bought in the last few years were Stadium jerseys: Love the Red Wings, Wild, Sharks jerseys for example.
And I did like the Islanders' fisherman to be honest.
But I guess the big takeaway from this type of discussion is the boring 'to each their own': I see people here liking what you described as hated by many. In my case, as a Sharks fans, I hate the return of the old logo and grey colour on jerseys - but many seem happy with that ?! And my favourite Sharks jersey is the Stadium Series - despite of the weird logo rendering.

In probably the last 4 years the fisherman has been embraced by many to be one of the most creative designs the team ever did and has gained a cult following amongst team fans and hockey fans alike

I've always thought that 3rd jersies should get a free pass. The team isn't committing to it, it's more of a test drive. The biggest brand mistake, in my opinion, was the Coyotes changing their logo to the generic coyote head. Luckily, it's been changed back for the coming season.

Great video! I think this is just a matter of creativity versus traditionalistic. I personally would like to see new and creative designs rather than being very conservative by recycling old designs over and over again. I think this shows lack of creativity and it becomes really boring if the same jersey designs are overly used.

The funny thing about the Islanders fisherman logo, is this video is the first time that I have ever seen that brand of frozen fishsticks, but it’s also very similar to Highliner fishsticks logo with “captain highliner”

Agreed. I always thought that logo was awesome. I mean, that is what an 'Islander' is. That said, I think most of the blowback from Islanders fans probably falls into the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' bucket. Their unis were already some of the best in the game. No need to change it.

As an Islanders fan I can tell you those Fisherman jerseys were horrendous to look at and the years they wore them were the darkest in team history. I think the unis they wear now are the best and all other 3rd jerseys, stadium series, etc. we’re pure crap. I’m surprised when you recapped all the bad Islanders jerseys you omitted the starburst orange one and the Reebok edge travesties. 🤮

The Fisherman jersey coincided with a dark time for the Islanders, so a lot of Isles fans associate the jerseys with those bad teams. That’s why it gets more hate than it does

Seems to be a generational thing to me. People who were kids when those logos came out have a sense of nostalgia for them. But at the time they were mostly not well received by long time fans.

Ditching the classic uni's in the 90's for those weird stripe jerseys, then to the Blasty jersey, then once Dark jerseys became every NHL's home uni, we go back to a gorgeous red jersey and make a run to the finals. Calling it the C of Red.

I think the Sabres goat head is the greatest logo in sports history. The majority of Sabres fans, while they might not have liked it at the time, have grown to appreciate it. A lot of great memories in the black and red. We would love to see it come back as a 3rd jersey.

As a kid in the 90's, pre-internet, I absolutely adored the sublimated jerseys, especially the Burger King. I kid you not, I saw it on tv highlights, and for the next few weeks I wondered if I had dreamt them up. I also enjoyed C
I absolutely adore the robopenguin, but its dark sweater companion with diagonal lettering was a bit of a miss. The cardinal sin of Penguins jersey, IMO, was changing its saturated yellow to piss yellow.
I don't think this is a blunder per se, but there are two trends that I'm quite happy have vanished: jersey piping, and desaturated/dark looks. Black Oilers, black Flames, black Sabres, black Flyers... all of these teams' saturated color schemes work so much better. Unlike other major sports, hockey takes place on a mostly white surface, it makes vibrant colors pop out so much, what a shame it was not to have these colors from the late 90's to the early 2010's. I'm so glad to have orange Flyers, red Flames and royal blue Sabres back, they look so much better, and I think it helps brand recognition as well. I'm not madly in love with the Stars' logo, and I think they should've kept a mustard yellow like the North Stars had, but they now own green in the NHL, no doubt about it.

Funny enough I actually own an authentic "Sens" Jersey and it is actually rather nice in person! Though there some odd design decisions like the red side stripes that swoosh with the double bands on each sleeve... its a bit of a mess. If it was just simplified a bit, I don't think it be mocked all that hard. I have a similar opinion about the "Canes" and "Bolts" jerseys as they are a bit busy.
The "Canes" one being the most visually appealing of the three, but does not mesh well with the home or alternate jerseys... I just hope if they ditch the current home jersey for the Alternate they do a white version of it instead of keeping the "Canes" jersey around as the away jersey for brand consistency reasons.
Mooterus in Texas... looking like a uterus in Texas... guessing even today that would not go over well...

It's funny how things change, I know a lot of islanders fans, especially on the under 30 side that love the fisherman logo and wish that they would bring it back. They keep making merch with it because people eat it up

The original Penguins colors were light blue and with white and black trim and different variations of blue until 1980(from light to indigo to dark blue). They changed to black and gold beginning in the 1980-81 season to match the Pirates and Stealers(who both had come off of championships).
