Gritty explains Philadelphia. When Gritty made his debut, everybody in the City said WTF. People were not impressed. But once people outside the city started to make fun of Gritty, the city rallied around Gritty and embraced him. That’s brotherly love.
6:57 "You know him as Gritty..." No, I know him as "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" But having said that, I like Gritty. I like all the NHL's furry friends, and indeed pretty much any mascot of any sports team. That's why I gave my approval for this series, and I am very much looking forward to more episodes. Onwards to Part 2!!
Well, look at it this way. If I did one video, I’d only be a quarter of the way done editing and you’d still have to wait a few weeks to watch it. At least this way you now have something to look forward to every week!
@icethetics Indeed. Another neat tidbit that you may or may not have known is that Gnash is one of the toughest mascots in the NHL. Not only does he do stunts like rappel from the rafters and ride an ATV, but one season Gnash kept doing his job - cast, wheelchair and all - after breaking his leg in an off-season training accident. THAT is true dedication to your craft and the character!
You’re videos are truly incredible from the editing the sound design the research the graphics. Works of art man as nice as any of the beautiful sweaters you cover!
A very great subject to have condensed archival data on in a video, thank you very much! I grew up with games at the old Pittsburgh Civic Arena and I'll never forget being very disturbed the first time I saw that clip from Sudden Death haha
Iceburgh was originally conceived by the late Badger Bob Johnson and his wife Martha when he was the head coach of the 1990-91 Penguins team that won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.
True story! And the Johnsons were inspired by Harvey the Hound from their time in Calgary. The Penguins have a video on their channel that delves into his full history. ua-cam.com/video/7dBMf2RGRvo/v-deo.htmlsi=RjtbuYyB8B5tn1_x
Since you „spoiled“ the topic in the community tab I’ve been excitedly waiting for the vid. And what can I say? It was worth the wait! The quality is top notch as always and the topic is just so much fun! Can’t wait for the next parts. P.S. I have to defend Gritty though. I would cuddle that thing. Just look at how plushy it is!
Want to say this was a treat to watch, and on a personal note I want to say "THANK YOU!" for pronouncing Al Sobotka's name correctly, as it is also my surname as well. (I've heard too many Hockey commentators and play-by-play men mispronouncing it as "So-BOAT-ka", when it is as you said it: "So-BOT-Ka") Looking forwards to Episode Two!
Yeah, I try to make a point to look up name pronunciations. Annoying to hear your name pronounced wrong. Not that I’d know personally... having the most generic first and last name in history. 😅 Thanks for watching!
My top mascots 1. Al the Octopus 2. Nyles (original version) 3. Wally the Whaler 4. SJ Sharkie 5. NJ Devil 6. Stanley C Panther & Victor E Rat 7. Howler the Yeti
Second, cool series so far! Oh and by the way, there is a football (⚽) team in Germany (FC Cologne) that has a live billy goat, named Hennes. This tradition has been on since 1950.
I hit 'like' before I even started the video. What an incredible addition to your many already spectacular series! Thank you for delving into the world of mascots. I've always been a bit obsessed with these zany representatives. I can't wait to see if Thrash makes an appearance in Episode 2! ...And it was a pleasant surprise to see my original comment in the beginning of this one!
6:05 This is why Iceburgh is so cool! What other mascot has not only starred in a movie but took a beating from action star Jean Claude Van Damme and lived to tell the tale?
Well Harvey was the first successful mascot, and the longest lasting for costumed mascots He is related to the CFL Calgary Stampeders’ mascot Ralph the Dog But they’re supposed to be fun, and for the most part they are, as is the video Looking forward to the next part.
Neither his Wikipedia page, or his bio on the Stampeders' website mention this, but I distinctly remember that Ralph began life as the mascot for North Hill shopping mall, not the team. His first few appearances at McMahon stadium, he was a shopping mall mascot who was moonlighting.
If I recall correctly, the Sabres had a "mascot" back in the '70s named "Sammy Sabre". He was...well, a sabre wearing ice skates and carrying a hockey stick. I can only find examples of Sammy as a cartoon character on print media, but I swear that at one point, there was an actual in-arena live version. As you might imagine, the costume was unwieldy and odd looking (a walking Sabre?). Sammy didn't last long. And Sabretooth is a much cooler mascot anyway.
Proud to support the ONLY team in the NHL that is good enough that we don't need to pay some guy dressing in a goofy-looking costume to keep fans entertained! LET'S GO RANGERS!
Where did you find those old images of Harvey Hound? The better question is. Why did Harvey look so odd and creepy in the 80's? He looked like the wolf version of the Spurs coyote.
I'm glad you asked! I meant to put a card linking to the original video. There's a great piece by KSPS in Spokane about Glenn Street and his company Street Characters. They had lots of great footage and photos of the earliest versions of Harvey. ua-cam.com/video/dWXijW5IauU/v-deo.html
When you talk about Tommy Hawk, I will be very disappointed if you don't include the video of him body slamming a dude that attacked him at the United Center.
Considering his namesake's exit from the franchise I wonder if “Al” the Octopus would ever be renamed, it's pretty unofficial in any regard so maybe they'll just never talk about it.
I don’t know but according to the NHL’s official brand guidelines for mascots, Al the Octopus is very much official. And regardless of the way his tenure with the team ended, Sobotka will always be a big part of the history.
@@icethetics interesting, I didn't know he was official! I imagine the only reason he'd change is if Al Sobotka asked them to change it, but I doubt he would. He's still beloved by fans.
I know what a (modern) Kraken actually looks like. It’s a giant squid 🦑. So I honestly think the Kraken should have an inanimate squid like mascot Squidward the Kraken.
It always shocks me that you are not more well known. Your production quality is top notch. Keep it up!
The algorithm will benefit you someday
This should be the official nhl fan account
Legit better than most Netflix documentary
It's because he covers the NHL. But I agree, top notch quality.

Yep, the old "only I can beat up my little brother" argument. 🤣
Now Gritty is prob the current most popular Mascot. Oh how the turn tables
@@benderbendingrodriguez420 Yea, but mostly because a bunch of wannabe commies have adopted him as their mascot.

I’m kinda regretting voting for multiple episodes rather than one long feature video. This one definitely left me wanting more. Well done!
Well, look at it this way. If I did one video, I’d only be a quarter of the way done editing and you’d still have to wait a few weeks to watch it. At least this way you now have something to look forward to every week!
1:22 is something you definitely DON'T see very often - Harvey wearing an actual Flames jersey. He's usually the only NHL mascot that doesn't.
True, that seemed to be a rare clip.
@icethetics Indeed. Another neat tidbit that you may or may not have known is that Gnash is one of the toughest mascots in the NHL. Didnt dissapoint! Such interesting history, cant wait for the 90s mascot boom next episode!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was awesome great job! I didn’t know sabretooth was the second oldest mascot! I believe Budd Bailey came up with the idea of him
That’s right. Budd Bailey and Paul Wieland developed the character, according to all the reports I’ve found.
Damn I didn’t want the episode to end!
That was fantastic, teh style was spot on and didnt just feel like you were reading off a list of names. Brilliant
Heeeeellllll yeah. I loved this. Can’t wait for part 2!
Absolutely one of my favorite videos ever!!! Can't wait for the next one!!! Great job, Chris!!!

@@gordonwhitney6052 that is correct, in fact his initial appearances at Stampeders’ games were also promotional appearances for the nearby mall
