The Goathead name really only came about from older fans who were mad about the move away from the original blue and gold and the classic crest, meant to be derisive. But those of us who grew up with the black and red embraced the name and made it our own!
I always liked the Sprite Can Canucks RR, however, they got it even better with their 2nd RR. Also the Millionaire’s Canucks was great and wish it would come back. I always hated when a team would always lose in a nice uniform and then it never comes back 😅
Man, I forgot about the Blues WC vs. Preds Stadium, a match made in EA Sports haha. Hope more teams do that kind of thing again soon. My top 3 are Ducks Wild Wing (wish it was worn more, or at least brought back again), Blues red (it fit the Reverse Retro theme to a T, and it looked solid, I will defend it as long as I'm breathing), and Vegas WC (probable bias cause I saw it in person lol). Canucks Sprite and Kraken Ironmen were also very nice looking on the ice. Surprised you didn't include Edmonton's throwback from '06, but understandable considering they've went back to it full time twice since then.
Yeah, exactly. The Oilers showing up on that filter was a little misleading because it was effectively a return to a previous jersey at that point in time. It just has to do with how I categorize jerseys in that document. And I thought about mentioning the Calgary HC and Vegas WC from this year, but I figured it wouldn’t be fair since the season isn’t over yet. They could conceivably wear them again and win. Might have to revisit this list in a few years.
basically the reason why it was called goathead in the first place was because of the little curved triangle underneath the buffalo’s chin was reminiscent of a goats long hair chin. it was used as a term to insult the logo from OG blue gold sabre fans but soon turned into a respected term as the “goat” of all sabre jerseys because of its unique style, angry face and amazing color scheme. not to mention some of the best (“goated” if u will) sabre players wore that jersey. its a double meaning of G.O.A.T. and the billy goat chin hair. awesome logo and jersey. my personal favourite of all time.

As a sharks fan I love that RR 1.0 jersey on me in the stands but they were hard to read the names and numbers on the ice. We also call the previous stealth ones bad luck as well
I remember reading an academic paper about sport psychology, and how more “aggressive” colours have a higher winning percentage, colours like red and black. Something about how the colours might have a psychological effect on both teams, scaring the one, but emboldening the team wearing it. Of course, this was a paper from like, the 80s or 90s, but it is interesting
@@kennybryan3588 I love that Smashville uniform. I think they should do a couple of “Smashville” Nights a year with that uniform and have the whole arena experience centered around local Nashville food and music.
The most expected coming back uniform was definitely the Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks 20th Anniversary on 13th October 2013. They used the Reebok Edge jersey only once but won a beautiful 1-4 game against the Senators.

Cool idea for a video. Is the Millionaires jersey the only recycled design since outdoor games began? There are some vintage throwbacks but I can't think of one that a team had already been using within the previous couple seasons.
Weirdly, that wasn’t the only time. Remember the orange throwback the Oilers wore in the 2016 Heritage Classic? It started as a third jersey the season before.
@@icethetics good call. The Oilers are a bit like the Bruins for me sometimes, feels like they've done every variation of the same basic elements so it's hard to keep track of when they first did it.

Yeah, there really aren’t that many more that didn’t make the list. (I even expanded beyond 10, technically, to include all 3 Sharks jerseys.) Others on the list would be, like you said, the Knights’ WC and Flames’ HC but since the season’s not over yet, I didn’t want to include those. They still could theoretically get a win. The only other non-winner would be the Red Wings’ first Reverse Retro and I couldn’t in good conscience put it ahead of any of the designs in this countdown. 😅
@icethetics that's what the Sabres logo on the red alt and Sabres' R.R. 1.0 are called Butterknives because the blades aren't sharp, dull like a butterknife. Some BarDown members called Butterknives it as well
Cool idea for a video, and even better to require 2 or more games to qualify Some don’t get why I get into logos and uni design so much, but I do And nice to see others who also get into that
Good question. Since some of them have OT/SO losses, they did earn points in the standings. The jerseys that have zero points all-time would be the Ducks/Blues Reverse Retro, Caps/Preds/Sharks Stadium Series, and the Canucks' Millionaires throwback. And technically the worst record would also mean the most losses, so that would be a 3-way tie between the Preds/Sharks SS and Millionaires, all 0-3-0.
I will always believe the Sabres will be a more successful franchise if they go back to the Goathead Jersey/ red and black scheme full time. It is an aggressive look compared to the royal blue and yellow.
@@icethetics Devils original reds with green are toast😂 The team stunk before switching to black and every time they brought them back it was almost a guaranteed loss.

@icethetics missed that at the end! I hoping either of Kings other Stadium Series uniforms can make the list, but the white pants and chrome helmets might keep them on the low end or just outside the top 10.
the blues play usually good in the winter classic jerseys but seemed to play terrible in the reverse retros that said i hope we get the dark blue arch jerseys back
I believe they had a winning record in the yellow Reverse Retro. And they just won with the old retro on Wednesday too. I really hope the crappy arch jersey stays buried in the past.
As a lifetime Sabres fan, watching Hasek, Peca, Briere, Drury, Afinogenov, Zhitnik and Satan among numerous others. All need to stop calling the goat head. Sabres Black Jersey. A very intimidating look and they always played well in it.
This is extremely random and nitpicky, (but I'm an Oilers guy, so of course I noticed), why is the Messier retirement game jersey from 2007 counted as a special jersey in your data set? I get that it was a one off for that season, but besides the patch it wasn't a new look (of course), it returned as a third the next season. By that logic, wouldn't that the original heritage classic 2003 jersey should be on there too? I'm pretty sure they didn't wear the royal blue and orange again in the 2003-04 season either, so I guess I'm just confused.
Oh yeah, happy to dig into that nerdiness. The Oilers throwback from 2006-07 (including Messier night) was a revival of a jersey the team hadn’t worn in 10+ years. If it’s been more than a year or two between uses of a jersey, I create a new entry-though there are not many examples of this happening in NHL history. This version was also made by Reebok unlike the original-which was CCM-and went away in 1996. And you’re mistaken about it becoming a third jersey the next season because that would’ve been 2007-08, the first year of Reebok Edge-and there were no third jerseys that year. The Edge version of the Oilers throwback came along in 2008-09 and because it was Edge, that automatically makes it a new jersey in my dataset. I did begin separating by manufacturer in 2007 when the league-wide jersey contracts began. The 2003 Heritage Classic jersey is entered as a separate jersey worn for the one game. Again, the design it’s based on was last used in 1996, so with that many years passing, I consider it a new jersey-even if the design is mostly the same. A throwback is its own thing in my book. All that being said, if we wanted to gauge how royal blue Oilers jerseys have performed all-time, I can just combine all these versions and call it day. That’s easier to do than trying to determine what data to take out if we wanted to see how it did, say, as the Edge version. I know that was long-winded, but did it answer your question?
@@icethetics Ah yes, I forgot about the gap year between the start of Edge 1.0 and the Royal Blue and Orange being a third, I do appreciate the meticulous thought taken into consideration here. The rule of a new category existing for something that had been shelved for a few years makes sense. I suppose they technically are different with different manufacturers. I guess it just sort of made my brain hurt because the royal blue Oilers stuff has been pretty regular (outside of the detour to pylon orange) since then that remembering a time where they were true throwbacks is different. Outside of the 40th anniversary throwback games, the 2003 Heritage Classic and the Messier Retirement, was that throwback ever used again? I can't remember if it was for another retirement, I know it wasn't for Coffey's, but thats all I can remember. That does answer my question though! Great video once again!
I consider it remake rather than a copy-and therefore unique from the original-since it went so long between uses and this one was a Reebok Edge version. Also as someone who tracks this type of data I have to ask: where did you get 161 wins? 😬
Thanks! And as far as I'm concerned, they never won in THAT jersey. This is a modern Reebok Edge take on an old CCM jersey. The designs may be similar, but they are not the same.
Where did you find how many times each team wore their jerseys? I’m trying to find how many times the Bruins wore their yellow 1.0 reverse retro jersey
Like I mentioned at 2:31, I keep my own document where I track jersey matchups in every game. The Bruins’ RR 1.0 jersey was not yellow... it was a white version of their yellow third from the ’90s. They wore it 6 times, going 5-0-1.
I’m sorry, I misunderstood! For some reason I thought you were referring to 2.0, and then I wrote 1.0 even though you did originally say 1.0. What a mess. 😅 Yes, you’re right. The yellow RR jersey worn in the 2021 season was worn in 5 games, going 4-1-0.
“Is” being the keyword there. I held off on considering any jerseys that are still in active use this season because the team could theoretically wear them again and win.
It works in the Google Sheets app for me. Can’t say how well it works in various phone browsers. But honestly, it’s not a great tiny screen experience anyway. It’s a big doc with a lot of data. Probably best viewed on a computer screen.
Did Montreal won in their Sunday Blues? I thought they went 0-8 in their first year. And I’m not sure about the Expo Blues jersey. I just know they lost their First game in it.
I’m not quite sure what you mean by “Sunday Blues” since the Canadiens never wore either of their blue Reverse Retros on a Sunday, according to my data. 😬 That said, the first RR (2021) went 1-4-1 and the second (2022) went 1-6-1.
Tight video, Chris! Some of us out here believe that colour psychology can be a factor sometimes... hockey players are creatures of habit and superstition, so it's highly likely that an abrupt change, even visually, could have an impact on your mojo, made worse if you get off to a bad start. Those who dismiss this are ignoring the power of subtlety. And I repeat... SOMETIMES. There are teams that are powerful and skilled no matter what flag they fly, and there are teams that are right on the bubble, where the slightest psychological nudge can make them surge... or plunge. We see it in the playoffs every season. :)
The SJS first retro reverse jersey was awesome. Loved the homage to the Seals, and any time that they do that, with the second RR but it just didn’t look very good or very Sharks.
I love how niche this top 10 is. Would love to see more like this in the future!

Good question. Since some of them have OT/SO losses, they did earn points in the standings.
Does the Sharks heritage jersey count when it's a copy of the one they wore for 7 seasons and won 161 games wearing?
I consider it remake rather than a copy-and therefore unique from the original-since it went so long between uses and this one was a Reebok Edge version. Also as someone who tracks this type of data I have to ask: where did you get 161 wins? 😬
I live in Nashville and those Smashville jerseys make me feel vomitous.
The Preds stadium uniforms were hideous. They deserved to never win them for poor design
Great list, but wouldn’t the Sharks 25th anniversary jersey be considered a winner ? Since they won in that jersey in the past?
@@icethetics the yellow that they wore at Lake Tahoe was the reverse retro 1.0? Or so I thought. 2.0 was the reverse Pooh bear
@@icethetics haha it’s all good! And thank you!
Fantastic
What about the Flames 2023 Heritage Classic? It is 0-2 against the Oilers.
“Is” being the keyword there. I held off on considering any jerseys that are still in active use this season because the team could theoretically wear them again and win.
How many more times is it going to be worn?
@@fantasticvoyage262 they are all done for this year. The Flames won the 3rd game so it’s no longer eligible for this list.
@@nbrandemark Did they beat the Oilers in it? Or someone else?
@@fantasticvoyage262 They beat the Oilers 6-3 in Edmonton in February.
i hate that the sharks are my team
Anyone else having trouble with the link for the spreadsheet. Is it not compatible with a phone?
It works in the Google Sheets app for me. Can’t say how well it works in various phone browsers. But honestly, it’s not a great tiny screen experience anyway. It’s a big doc with a lot of data. Probably best viewed on a computer screen.
Gee it's great being a Canucks fan....
Just goes to show that even when the team is having a rough go, the jerseys can still be awesome!
When is third making of the mascot Series coming out
Being edited!! But I’m holding it until March because something is happening in a few weeks that I really want to include in the next episode. 😅
@@icetheticsTeasers upon teasers upon teasers. You’re killing us, Chris! And I absolutely love it.
Haha I just have so much in the pipeline! I only wish I had more time to sit down and edit every week. If only Icethetics was my full-time job. 😅
Love Vancouvers. This comment comes from a Runner with a Custom Made blue Red Wings jersey Racing shirt (#13-Datsyuk)
Cool
I heard that suitable laugh at that balding Vancouver Millionaires guy lmao
why would you laugh at someone for how they look? 🤨 i was mildly chuckling at the 12-3 score in a stanley cup final game.
Didnt the RR1.0 Habs never win?
Not quite. They beat Vancouver in a shootout and went 1-4-1 overall.
Vintage white got the #1 spot 🫣
See? You guys think you know me. I don’t actually hate it when it’s used right and it’s perfect on this jersey!
@@icethetics that's what the giant V on the chest actually means. Vancouver Vintage Whites
sounds like the vw obsession is on the other side of the ice these days... 😅
I really loved my Sharks Reverse Retro jersey from 2021 and I think its a shame we didn’t wear it that much 🦈🦈🦈
Tight video, Chris!
You like ugly gray a lot more than the rest of us.
It’s technically a bison, not buffalo 😅
😆
They aren't the same thing?
You don't consider the 2020 Red Wings RR one of the 10 best?! C'mon! ;)
haha, does anyone? 😅
