- Do you have hardware synth (analog) and want to record it in Cubase?
There are few ways you can record your synths in Cubase and I'm going to show you two options:
1. Add Audio track and record the synth
2. Create External Midi Device and load it into Instrument Track (cool)
Chapters:
00:00 Let's connect our synth to Cubase and record
00:36 Method #1 for recording your synth with Cubase
04:19 Method #2 Creating External MIDI Device
08:40 Add panels to the Inspector with custom UI and Controls
12:37 Sequencing with Animation Station (review coming up soon)
I'm using my Behringer Odyssey for this tutorial but of course it will work with any synth.
First connect your synth audio out into your audio interface input and if it support MIDI connect the MIDI out to your audio interface or directly to the computer.
In this video I will explore a very cool way of configuring your external devices such as synths in Cubase. I'm using Cubase 11 Pro but I guess older versions will work the same with some screens different look.

Wow! This was VERY helpful. Thanks ALOT!!!
Thank you 🙏🏼

Good to see someone even show anything about midi device way of doing things especially the panels part. I've used it for years now, it's so quick to get going once you learn how. Make one knob, ctrl+C, ctrl+V 7 times, select all of them, space evenly horizontal, set to param1, 2, 3, 4, 5. done. really underrated i think.
Glad you like it! I actually saw that explained by someone and thought how cool is that. :)
Excellent tuition. The best by far that I have seen on this issue - thank you!

Thanks for watching mate I hope this helps
Thanks for sharing and really well explained.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much. Brilliant information, well explained.
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
Excellent! I just bought a Behringer Model D; going to set it up as an external instrument in Cubase. You're video here was very helpful!
Thanks mate.

Awesome! I used method #2 gave me just what I needed! Thx
Cool 😎
Very powerfull video. Your second method helps me a lot. Many thanks dude!
You're welcome mate!
Thanks for watching.

Useful tutorial 🤙🏼
Thanks!
The best tuto that i have never seen ! Thanks a lot for that.
Thank for watching 🎹
Thanks to you i could finally record my synthesizer's sound as midi file. Thank you veeery much 😊 👍
For those who recorded synth's sound as midi, and exported as wav, but the file was empty(no sound):
1.Do the method#1 in this video,
2.Create audio track (stereo) and just press record button. Recorded midi track will be converted in audio track, and it will finally play.
Great to hear ✨
Thanks a lot, I missed my Roland U220 so much, but now I have it back on trail!
Oh cool!
Glad it helped
Today I opened Cubase after a few months of not using it and I forgot how to get my hardware synths routed. This was very helpful as refresher !!
Glad it helped !
Really nice thanks
Most welcome 😊
מלך תודה!!!

thanks for this vid you made it beyond easy to set up my korg minilogue. super excited about being able to record the notes in midi so i can quantize and change things. youre the fuckin man my guy
thank you so much for this comment. I’m really happy this is helpful for you.
Thx for help
Thanks for watching!
You can definitly use the 'Thanks' button... :)
fantastic
Thanks!
@11:57 Dom Sigalas! 👍 👍 of course. SUBSCRIBED to UDi Audio right away!!!!
This feature, it is really cool, I was kind of disappointed with the default interface created for external instruments. . . . this changes everything. Cubase feels to me as if I designed my own DAW.
Also, could you review Animation Station?.... looks pretty cool.
Haha.. I did a little Dom … I love watching @dom sigalas
Yes I have Animation Station and plan to review soon i hope
Awesome video man! This is super useful. I have a DeepMind12 so will have a go at making my own panel for it via method 2. Is there any way you can see your patches in Cubase?
Actually I'm not sure.. sorry.
Thank you. This was really helpful. Got my old Novation Novs and Korg Wavestation SR hooked up and working. Do you still need to record the audio to another track or will it happen automatically when you export the finished mix? Thanks again.
It should export as audio. Just try... :)
Let me know how it went.
Very helpful. Looks like the first method makes it easier to record audio from the external synth? How would you do this in method 2?
Just like rendering and virtual instrument. you can run render in place for example
Thanks for the video, it's a very interesting feature.
Why is it for Cubase pro only ? I wish to find this in Cubase 12 Artist or even Elements !
No idea if they plan to add this to other versions
Man, it blows me when you turn your arp on)
Hey there and thank you for this! I was trying to find something like this for awhile and your video was exactly what I was looking for. So, I did everything the same way as you in "Method 2" and my Hydrasynth did in fact create a midi file using my synthesizer's native sounds. Input on that channel is "All Midi Inputs" and output is the Midi Device I created per the instructions. The only issue I'm having is that while iI can the track has recorded midi, nothing is playing back. Anything I can try? Is it possible that I'm recording the music on the same keyboard I'm sending it back to? What I'm trying to do is record midi using the Hydrasynth, and then send the midi back out to the Hydrasynth using the sounds on that keyboard. (If I create a new Midi track (not an instrument track) and then drag the midi I just created, that I can hear)
To be honest I have no idea. It might be related to how this synth is handling incoming midi.. but really sorry I just don't know and it's hard to suggest something just based on your commnet here.
Verry nice tutorial, but i have a question. is it possible to send the song I recorded on my Yamaha keyboard to Cubase...all instruments on a separate track instead of on 1 track?
When I send the song to Cubase I get all the instruments on 1 track
I have no idea.. I would think not.
Hi, can I do this using Cubase 5? Thank you for your help and dedication.
You could connect a synth into audio input/ track but creating audio device I think not
It would be nice if you can show how the latency is compensated, is it done automatically ? I know there is a window to ping the External Instrument to make sure the round trip is accurate and when you playing the midi notes with the metronome it is tight. Thank You
Yes managing the latency is important but I need to research this and prepare a video.. maybe I'll get to this..
Can you associate MIDI devices after creating an external instrument?
Sorry not sure what you mean.. can you elaborate or give an example
UDI 2nd Day, How do you cable up Synth to interface to computer.
I am not getting the green level meter on the Audio Track,Midi Track is fine.
Can you get back to me ?
You need to connect the synth into your audio interface instrument input.
Which synth and which audio interface are you using?
Once you connect the synth to the audio interface you can press F4 in cubase and add a new mono or stereo device and select that input from the list just like you would if you connected a microphone for example.
Excellent tutorial..... I have one question, I'm using a Yamaha DTX drum kit as my external instrument. MIDI records perfectly and I can render in place. But when i dissolve the part into separate pitches, the routing sections says that there is no external instrument. When i click on the drop down, the DTX option isnt there, only Groove Agent. I cannot render the individual items. Any idea what Im doing wrong? Many thanks!!
Hi Marty
I'm sorry I really have no idea. Maybe someone else can help here..

@@UDiAudio Thanks so much for coming back to me!!
Can these created sliders be mapped to a midi controller/knobs/ sliders for more precise control?? Thnxx brother ❤
Yes they can.
Yes, absolutely
Ok, so far this is the closest I've come to doing what I want. I'm trying to have my prophet 08 (which doesn't have usb connections) be triggered by a midi track. I can finally see my prophet as an instrument, hear it and record the midi, but as soon as I play it back it doesn't produce sound. The only difference I can see with how I set this up is that on the midi device manager, I don't have the prophet 08 as an option to the right of the output text, only Focusrite USB MIDI. Can you help me please?
The only thing I can think of is that you need to route the midi out back to the synth. Have you physically connected your interface midi out to the midi in on the synth ?
Very interesting video. Still new to this. I have a Roland D110 and want to sample the drums from it into Cubase 11 Artist that I have bank of retro drum machine sounds mapped across the keyboard into Cubase. This is instead of having the D110 wired up all the time. How easy is this and how would I do it? I have searched for videos that would help but without any luck. Any ideas please.
Now subscribed to your channel. Thank you.
There is no easy way to do it. You have to connect your device and sample each note or sound in several velocities (if relevant). Plan ahead of time what you plan to do and make sure to name the samples correctly. Once you have all the samples you can use samplers like Groove Agent to create drum kits.
@@UDiAudio Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.
Hi, since my last contact, I have found some very good 80's kits hidden away in Halion. There is so much content I couldn't see the woods for the trees.
@@stephenmarsh3986 There are many samples out there.. just need to look for them. Here is a good pack: www.wavealchemy.co.uk/808-tape/pid81/

Hi, can you give me an answer please. I have two questions for cubase LE.
1. Can I export my project to mp3 and wav
2. can I connect the midi keyboard to the cubase LE
1. only 20 times.. steinberg.help/cubase_ai_le_elements/v9/en/cubase_nuendo/topics/export_audio_mixdown/cubase_artist_only_mp3_export_c.html
2. you should be able to connect midi keyboard
Hi. I have an older Cubase VST 3.6 with the 25 pin D sub parallel interface and want to connect it to a current volca-nubass vac tube synth. Is it possible to convert this to the present day 5 pin DIN? I think is essentially USB?
I have to admit I just don't know.. try some converter cable in Aliexpress..
@@UDiAudio Thanks!
Midi Casio guitar PG- 380 is my midi guitar.....thanks
Sorry i’m not familiar with it.
Cab method 1 work for Cubase Elements?
You can always connect your synth via your audio interface and into audio track.
I'm trying to record my midi instrument in my midi guitar, but only can play the strings D, G, B and E. Why? I want to play the whole chords in the guitar.
It’s unrelated to this video but can tell me which midi guitar are using? maybe there’s some settings there
Can you sync cubase's project bpm to external midi clock?
Yes
yep... check the user manual.. :)
And can you use several tracks using the same External Instrument?
I don’t think so, because each midi track will send information at the same time to the same synth
Please. How do you cable up a synth to an interface? very new at this
I have the same question...just inherited a computer with Cubase LE 11....so much to learn...
Hi Nic,
You need to connect the synth into your audio interface instrument input.
Which synth and which audio interface are you using?
Once you connect the synth to the audio interface you can press F4 in cubase and add a new mono or stereo device and select that input from the list just like you would if you connected a microphone for example.
See my answer to Nic
@@UDiAudio
But what about midi? My computer has no midi interface so how do you physically connect it , especially sending midi from the computer to the synth
@@robholton8153 if your synth support midi via usb you can connect it to your computer otherwise this can’t work. I guess not all synths support this.
Are you on mac or win? On windows I've got a problem with latency. It's unusable..
I’m on PC.. try using small buffer maybe
Is your Odyssey also connected to your PC via USB?
Yes
When i send midi to external synth the timing is 1/32 off, can’t find a solution. It’s in sync only with constrain delay compansation
I think the delay compensation is the only way.
@@UDiAudio thanks, but if I don’t turn it off there’s a pause in the audio when you move between tracks. Amazing
Which do you use for most of the time, method 1 or method 2?
I mostly use method 1 but now experimenting with method 2.. :)
It dosent work with my crimson 2, do you know why ?
It's hard to say. Which method doesn't work for you?
You should be able to connect your synth to your audio interface and record audio with cubase like any other audio channel.
Can you describe the signal chain from synth to cubase?
Why are those software so not userfriendly
I agree it could be better..,
Device panel feature is pretty useless because snapshots don't work and you can't automate it or use quick controls. I wish I knew this before I wasted my time trying to make it work. There is potential but at current state it is pretty useless. It is nice to play with but you don't get anything useful when you try to do something with it.
Well one thing for sure. You can create external midi devices to use in Instrument tracks and that's not too bad as it is.
@@UDiAudio It is good as long as you don't want to send CC or NRPN to device or automate it. I really hope they make working version of this to Cubase 12 because the idea is good one.
You didn’t cover the importance of measuring and compensating the delay for rendering the audio. And how that changes anytime you change the interface buffer. This is NEVER talked about and is absolutely critical to know internet world. If you don’t you will be fighting why nothing renders in time.
Indeed.. thanks for noting this. Sometimes I just shoot the videos with no planned script and I guess I can't cover everything. The idea behind this video was just to highlight couple of opetions to record synths in cubase.
