    Great clear explanation. Thanks, Dom. I'd love to see you do a followup explaining a bit more about fixing the tempo of a freely-played recording that doesn't use drums and doesn't have a lot of sharp attacks. Also, a bit more on how the warp tempo markings being moved affect the other markings in the track. And....sorry for all the requests....how about talking about how to back out or proceed if more work is needed on a recording that's already gone through your steps. Your tutorials are a lifesaver!

    Tempo mapping can be a sobering job, more time than is worth it to rescue a bad take. You did a great job pointing out the less than obvious steps of the procedure. I hope no one walks away from this thinking “hey, I can fix anything!” Done creatively, mapping is like manna from heaven. Done forensically, it’s a total drag.

      Well said. It's a chore for sure, but luckily, it's also pretty simple. Took me over an hour to fully fix up my drums, despite the simplicity of the process. BUT! Now I can freely adjust the song's tempo, sync MIDI and all the other fun stuff. So for me, it's well worth the effort, especially since I travel to record the drums and can't do more takes.

    Thanks for the video Dom! I tried this method with a project where the audio was not recorded to a click, and in addition some of the audio tracks did not start right at the beginning of the piece but part way through. Those tracks went out of alignment with the others as soon as I activated the Tempo track to begin aligning the grid to the audio. I found the way to prevent this was to set all audio tracks’ time base to Linear rather than Musical mode before activating the Tempo track. That way all the audio tracks will stay aligned with each other, and you can then proceed with the rest of Dom's excellent advice!

  • @arnault-d
    @arnault-d Рік тому +4

    Thanks for the vidéo. I used this technique recently on 4 recordings. But I think there is an important limitation not mentioned when you apply a fix tempo on all tracks: even if algorithms are better and better, the audio artefacts due to stretching are quite audible and not compatible with a "pro" sound. Even when subtle on bass for example, you can feel it may lack of energy suddenly. In my case I chose to keep a loose tempo and rather quantize the drum (slicing, no stretching). Then I sliced the vocals, aligned them and corrected some notes of the bass. Not perfect but definitely better than stretching artefacts.

    • @arnault-d
      @arnault-d Рік тому +3

      However, days ago I saw a video about artefacts in musical mode that can be due to the "live" application of the stretching and can be removed by a cubase function that kinda render it. Not sure if would help or not as in the example artefacts were clicks. Artefacts I had were more like digital noise you may hear sometimes with streamed audio and a poor conection.

    • @cornoc
      @cornoc Рік тому

      yeah, can ruin transients too. for smoother audio like vocals it can sound okay for small adjustments. problem with slicing instead of stretching is you can end up with gaps in the audio, so depending on what else is going on at the time, might sound artificial too. you can sometimes fix that by cutting and pasting tails but that's laborious to say the least.
