Reviewing Glenn Beck's Garbage Novel, The Overton Window

  • This is one of Glenn Beck’s seven (!) novels. Honestly I regret choosing this one because the Santa/Jesus crossover book sounds so much more amusing. That said, I’m pretty sure the Christmas ones are much worse. This one has a sequel, The Eye of Moloch, which I may get around to some day, but I’m in no rush. From what it sounds like, it was actually the second half of this story, which explains why it ends so suddenly. There was also a stage production of this book. It was done ironically though, so I figured I could skip it.
I was disheartened to learn how little of his books Glenn actually writes. I think that’s what kept is from getting into some really awful crap. Ultimately it’s not as bad as Ben Shapiro’s novel because of that. And that was disappointing.
I added some context for people unfamiliar with who Glenn Beck was/is, and why he still matters today. Some of the history may not be exact, and I may have played down the racist elements of the Tea Party movement, but the important part is how it shaped politics today. Acting like a giant weight against progress.

This is the neoliberal position. By small government, the neolibs don't mean weak. They want a government so trimmed down and strong that it can ignore the will of the people. The Crisis of Democracy: On the Governability of Democracies (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crisis_of_Democracy) argued that democracy had gone too far in the West. Full text here: archive.org/stream/TheCrisisOfDemocracy-TrilateralCommission-1975/crisis_of_democracy_djvu.txt
Anyway, the neoliberals want the government to be boiled down to just police and military, national and international police forces. Or as Thomas L. Friedman puts it in “A Manifesto for the Fast World,” published in the New York Times, March 28,1999, and is available online: “The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist-McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the builder of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies is called the United States Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.”
That's neoconservative, you say. Same thing. There were no neolibs left after 9/11. They all became neocons, including Christopher Hitchens. As Hitchens put it, "I once tried to calculate how long the post-Cold War liberal Utopia had actually lasted." Or as the Swedish neoliberal-cum-neoconservative newspaper Expressen put it in 2001: "The neoliberal laissez-faire mentality of the 1990s was a short parenthesis [in history]."

How come corporations are never corrupt in these conservative novels? I wouldn't be surprised if a conservative Superman comic cast Lex Luthor as a job creator and Superman as the unwitting villain. Conservatives have a tendency to be backwards and see things in an opposite light, so why not?
It's like: "Superman means well but he's a libtard who sees things as they should be instead of how they are." I can see that line being used in a conservative Superman novel or comic.

These people treat this identity as extremely exclusive and will frequently engage in gate keeping and purity tests so as to expose “fake gamers.” Or in other words anyone who doesn’t think Gamers are an oppressed underclass of people and treat gaming as a core part or ones identity.
These kind of people typically skew far right and were probably either involved in or supportive of the GamerGate fiasco.
If for some reason you want to see these kind of people in the wild you can see them at r/GammersRiseUp. Which used to be a satire of these kind of people until they got taken over by the very people they were mocking.

Yo, Glen, the Russian Communists fought the Nazis. Also just because the Nazis called themselves socialist doesn't mean they were, they called themselves that because it sounded good when in reality they were a fascist dictatorship. Just like The Democratic Republic of Korea is literally none of those things. Also "we need to defend America, even from other Americas by force." is literally fascism.

The early NSDAP had a "left" wing with people who considered themself to be socialists first, nationalists second, in the 1920s and early 1930s, namely the circle around the Strasser brothers. Hitler hated those people and did whatever he could to isolate and oust them from the party if they didn't convert to his ultranationalist fascist ideas, like Josef Goebbels did after a personal long brain washing session from him. Goebbels renounced and disavowed all socialist ideals after that and became a "true believer in the Führer". As soon as he had the power to do so, Hitler forced them into exile (Otto Strasser, for example), incarcerated them, or outright had them murdered. The last remnants of that wing of the NSDAP were murdered during the "Night of the Long Knives", Gregor Strasser included. Every last bit of socialist ideals or influences was eliminated from the party by mid-1934.
The main goal of the "Night of the Long Knives" was to eliminate Ernst Röhm, leader of the SA and the second-most powerful man in the very early Third Reich. Röhm was basically the only person who still could have overthrown or replaced Hitler. He was outspokenly, aggressively anticapitalist and wanted a "second revolution" to nationalise agriculture and the heavy industries. His streetfighting, strike supporting (during labour disputes), rowdy, usually drunk SA men were a severe danger to the regular German military - massively weakened by the Treaty of Versailles - and to regular law enforcement.
Hitler was bankrolled by influential super-rich industrialists (the Rhenish steel magnates) and needed to win the trust of the military to consolidate his power. What he did NOT need anymore were hard-to-control violent drunk streetfighters (now without their main enemy, the communist streetfighters of the KPD) and Nazi leaders who threatened the military-industrial complex and capitalist elite in Germany. Also, Röhm was a very openly homosexual hard partier, he even had his own supposed "gay orgy island" in a Bavarian lake for a while. Hitler was his "best friend and closest ally" in the official propaganda, including Leni Riefenstahl's movie "Victory of Faith" about the Nuremberg Rally of 1933, the Nazis' big celebration of their takeover - so rumours that the Führer was gay developed quickly, too. Röhm had to die.
National _socialism_ in the Nazi party effectively was killed off in June/July 1943. All other communists, socialists, and social democrats had already been "taken care" of. 80% of the prisoners in the early concentration camps in 1933 were Communists, 10% were Social Democrats, the remaining 10% were trade union activists and members of other parties. The "S" and "A" in "NSDAP" were completely redundant and meaningless after the first one and a half of the twelve years and change the Third Reich lasted
Anybody who wants to claim that Hitler's wing of the NSDAP, that took over the entire party and ran Nazi Germany without any intraparty opposition from mid-1934 all the way to the end in Mai 1945, was "socialist" is completely clueless or intentionally spouts ahistorical nonsense to smear political opponents in the present.
Anybody who thinks that somebody like Hitler-megadonor Fritz Thyssen, who controlled 75% of Germany's iron ore reserves, had 200k employees, and was one of the richest, most powerful industrialists in Europe, would have financed a socialist of any kind is either delusional or dangerously ignorant. Same with Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, albeit he initially somewhat opposed the Nazi "proles" before he became a "Hitler superfan" and megadonor in February 1933. He basically ran the German military-industrial complex during WWI by himself as a quasi-monopoly. Claiming that paternalistic monster industrialists like that, who basically ran their own personal autocratic fiefdoms within the state as they pleased, would have supported Hitler with even a single cent if he had shown just the tiniest traces of socialist convictions in their conversations, is infinitely more ridiculous than claiming that the Koch brothers financed Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. Just beyond ridiculous.

I was raised by a dad who had been listening to Glenn's radio program for just about as long as I could remember. Eventually, as I reached my tween/teen years, I started to pay more attention, and, since my dad agreed with it all, I bought in. I remember reading this book and thinking it was good. My critical thinking skills and storytelling craft were hardly developed, and it was just more of the conspiratorial bullshit I'd been fed, so it confirmed my biases. I even begged my dad for us to go to that infamous 8.28 rally in Washington.
The thing is, I didn't know any better. I was too young, sheltered, and naive to know any better. Being raised Mormon (which, as far as I know, Glenn still is), it ironically took going to BYU for me to begin to break down my childhood ideology and see all the ways it was unfounded and wrong. Nowadays, I can't believe I gave that guy so much credit, even though I understand that I had no other voices to counter him at the time. I don't consider myself a Mormon anymore, but the fact that he still is one despite his very real harm done to this country's politics makes me angry all the same. Now if only I could find a way to gently pull my dad out of the far-right conservative zeitgeist... He doesn't listen to Glenn Beck anymore (as far as I know), but the bullshit he parrots so casually in everyday conversation shows me if it's not Beck it's someone else these days.

I was raised Mormon too… raised by a Mormon mother and a father who is a Taiwanese immigrant (citizen now). My mom is great but unfortunately she listened to rush Limbaugh every morning driving us to seminary. My dad now watched Fox News every evening (even though they’re divorced).
I adopted those horrible god awful opinions as a teenager too and soon became addicted to drugs (not just bc of those opinions, more so bc of the belief system that they reinforce and the larger issues they’ve caused in my entire family… abusive issues) and ended up married to a violently abusive former marine who was 38 when he got me pregnant at 19.
My mom leans left in every single way except her belief in the Mormon religion. Same with my sister. Both went to byu… Provo and Idaho, respectively.
Now my mom is a professor for byu in the education department, but she remarried to (another) awful, very selfish man. I am glad that she’s at byu teaching a lot of silly, naive kids a better perspective about the realities of the world we live in. For example- she’s told me how she has many times had to correct kids who thought that having “food stamps” was “robbing” or he government.
She’s also told me about the rape problem on campus (just like every campus… but people don’t expect this to be an issue at byu).
I also no longer consider myself Mormon… and the more perspective I have, the more and more I am disgusted with that ideology/religion.

19:40 "Imagine this argument being used against giving women the right to vote" That was literally an argument both for and against giving women the right to vote. Winston Churchill, who was against women's suffrage when it began, later said he would've been openly supportive of it if only he'd realized this.

Regarding the Kipling poem from the trailer, the poem is about two sets of values/modes of thought, represented as two competing pantheons of gods. The gods of the copybook headings (the name comes from how when Kipling was a boy, he had to copy lines from his textbook, which were often moral instructions) represent traditional modes of thought and how society used to be, as Kipling perceived it. The gods of the marketplace represent newer ways of thinking. In each verse of the poem, society worships the gods of the marketplace in some way or other (by creating welfare systems, not being draconian, etc), and then things start falling apart, and each verse concludes with the gods of the copybook headings sternly rebuking society. The final verse, and the one that made up the trailer, is about how society has completely fallen apart and only a return to tradition can revive it.

I think its funny when people write books and in the intro think they've invented the concept of talking about the "truth" via fiction. Because it really tells me they've not really engaged with a lot of other writers, because the concept of discussing reallife issues via fiction is writing 101. It just tells me they're thinking about the documentary talking about how awardwinning and profound their work is before thinking about how to actually make their writing good.

Regarding the religiosity of the leaders of the American Revolution: some of the founding fathers themselves were religious, others weren't; but some of the people who did the most to spread the popularity of revolutionary ideas among the masses were religious leaders. This makes sense, as especially in the wake of the First Great Awakening, clergy were some of the most influential people in the colonies. In fact, not only did many ministers serve during the war as chaplains, but some participated even more directly in the conflict. There is a fairly well-known instance of a minister, during Sunday service, removing his collar and producing a musket from behind his pulpit, and raising up a militia unit from among his congregation. However, while these ministers no doubt were influenced by their faith and saw participation in the Revolution as being in accordance with their religious principles, there is a huge difference between choosing the side in a conflict which you believe is most closely aligned with your own principles, and viewing that side as directly inspired by God.
