I actually didn’t know that cis was a real scientific term until college chemistry, I just thought it was an acronym or something. That day of the biochem unit was when it all clicked
Even if Bill Nye "changed his mind" about science, he did it because the science changed. That's what science does; it grows and changes over time. Too bad so many (very loud) people will not keep up.
@@elvingearmasterirma7241 Yeah too bad he said "Us Scientists" when making statements and then not backing them up by anything other than his Word, or getting angry when a real Scientist tries to debate him. Open to change ? Are you open to change on _everything_ ? Because one imposter who caters to the left said so ? Nope.
@@Ixiah27Oh boy there is a lot to unpack here. So, yes, Bill Nye does not have a degree in biology, chemistry but he does technically have on in physics. Mechanical engineering relies on physics and material science a lot, something you would know if you bothered to google what degree Bill Nye has for five seconds. A real scientist wouldnt be able to debate Bill alone, because newsflash, each branch of science has a smaller more specific branch. And the topics Bill covers is in a lot of them. Furthermore, a real scientist that actually went to university and spent time finishing the course will most likely agree with Bill when the branch that they specalise in come up, whether you like that idea or not. Whenever a scientist doesnt agree with something due to personal opinion, religion or what have you, they are generally not in that field. As has been shown many times.

A 4000 year old Babylonian myth had a character called Asushunamir, who's specifically non-binary. A lot of deities from ancient Egypt have gendered names, which refer to the same deity but are specifically male or female. Ancient Greece had the deities Apollo and Artemis, bi and ace respectively, and plenty of mythological (Achilles and Patroclus) and real queer people (the word lesbian comes from the island of Lesbos, where poet and icon Sappho lived). Ancient Roman politician Jullius Caesar was known as "every woman's man and every man's woman". There's an ancient Chinese myth describing the emperor napping with his basically boyfriend and rather than wake him up, cutting off the sleeve of his expensive robe the boyfriend was laying on, which has led to the euphemism 'cut sleeve' still being used today. Alan Turing, who cracked the enigma code and is today called the father of computer science, was gay. Queer people didn't JUST appear as some Y2K event, they've been a part of human civilization since pretty much its inception. Those wondering why they conspicuously dissapeared for 2000 years in the west may wanna look at Christianity and their revisionist bullshit.

Fun fact, from someone taking a university course in genetics right now: It's not even "chromosomes" that determine biological sex. It's a specific part of the Y chromosome, the SRY gene, which codes for a certain protein that causes male sex organs to develop. Why is this important? It means that if the SRY region is found on the X chromosome for some reason (errors during meiosis, etc.) we could actually have someone who is XX who develops into a biological male. Conversely, if someone is XY with a non-functional SRY, they would develop into a biological female. (And that's not mention people who are XXY, XXX, or any other combination which defies the typical XX/XY dichotomy.) Basically, even if you ignore (for some unfathomable reason) people who aren't just XX or XY, it would still be false to assume that all XX people are biologically female and all XY people are biologically male.
That's fascinating to me, as a forensic science student currently who picked the chemistry route instead of the more biological focused route that would have looked at genetics (due to me struggling in terms of picturing aspects such as gene replication when the entire code was being mapped out) it's always nice to see information that furthers my understanding on this. Thank you for sharing!
Oh my god, I had to learn the function of the SRY gene for my biology final a few months ago. Some people learn this in… high school? Idk? My school system is quite different to the American or British one.
This is not how it works. The newest definition of sex in biology and medecine is really simple: if you got a Y you are a male, if you don t you are a female. Anomalous cases are treated the exact same way, wich ended the questions about "what sexual organs/secondary sexual characters are visible/does genes are active or not". Source: i was in biology faculty last year. Can t do more new than that.
An update on all these Kooky characters from September 2021: Armoured Skeptic uploads sporadically but has completely moved away from political commentary. Mouthy Buddha had his channel terminated in October 2020 for multiple violations of the harassment policy. Someblackguy is active and somewhat less reactionary but for a channel with 400,000 subscribers, struggles to break 50k views a video. Red pill philosophy had his channel terminated in December 2020 for spreading COVID misinformation among other conspiracy theories. No B.S. is a dead channel with one upload in the past 6 months. Rageafterstorm deleted her channel and fled the internet a couple months before this video released (she’s a nazi so no one misses her). Honestly, I think Anita Sarkeesian saved me from falling completely in the hole. I decided to try watching some of Feminist Frequency after seeing so many people complain about it like it was the end of the world and an attack on all men and gamers. It just baffles me that Rage After Storm came so close to understanding why African countries have such a high birth rate. She calls having kids to look after you when you're older and in case a bunch of them die growing up selfish but... is that, I dunno, _maybe_ because those countries lack well-funded retiree care, and the parents don't want to be left on the streets to die after their two kids died of easily preventable diseases the local medical system was too under-funded and under-staffed to effectively deal with? Alt right: facts don't care about your feelings Bill Nye: here's the latest scientific understanding of sex and gender identity Alt right: WHAT THE FUCK HAS HAPPENED TO BILL NYE HE HAS BETRAYED SCIENCE AND US ALL OH GOD MY CHILDHOOD!!!
People who say science isn’t political only fetishise the abstract concept of science, and have never been involved in science *as it actually exists in the world*. Even if you assume that there is no issue with securing funding (a massively political process), you still have to engage with ethical and moral questions that the might be involved in doing the research, and then with the material limitations of implementing your findings. This is not to mention that the process of distributing your science by publishing it in peer-reviewed journals is, of course, a political one because it involves humans making decisions about what is robust enough and notable enough to publish.
As someone in STEM it is kinda odd to see the general public view science as non political but it does make sense. They view science as basically a fact machine and have no thought about everything done to achieve the end goal.
Science is a methodology for testing suspicions, and the body of information that arises therefrom. Politics and finance are politics and finance, and reach their octopus arms into everything, but are not science, only things connected to science.
@@kurtpatterson509 Politics and finance certainly are (or at least should be) science. Politics in particular is rather explicitly scientific in a democracy. Much like a scientific experiment, electing one group of people to establish a specific set of policies is a form of experimentation and testing. We (as a collective human race, not any individual) know how, why, and to what degree certain political beliefs/policies not because we're super geniuses who could tell at a glance what they do and don't accomplish, but because they've been tested over and over and we've seen the results. Finance is in a similar boat, albeit much more strictly observational rather than experimental.
@Adam Apocalypse You are outright lying by saying "race" is a simple concept. Nobody who has ever seriously studied the concept (you know, with science and math and data and measurements and all that) has ever agreed with your conclusion. Those who have seriously studied the concept have come to a single, opposite conclusion. There are genetic variations between humans, and different statistical measurements between various groups, but: 1. The variance between groups is negligible compared to the variance within groups. 2. None of the groups that we've found *actually* exist even remotely correspond to classical or popular ideas of what "race" is.
@Adam Apocalypse The race realist position is bullshit, because it focuses on color more than actual genetics, and color has fuck all to do with underlying ethnic groups. A "black" person can be everything from one black grandparent to four black grandparents by our current usage of the word, while ethnicities, which are actually useful for distinguishing genetical traits are barely affected by color. And as mentioned above, even then the differences are larger within any given group than between groups.

28:40 RageAfterStorm's comment about Botswana is something I didn't notice at first (since it just seemed to be generic "Sub-Saharan country poor" argument), but I learned something recently that makes me think this is actually more sinister than I first realized. If you didn't know (and I didn't know when I watched this at first), but Botswana is actually one of the fastest-growing--if not the fastest-growing--economies on the planet, and is considered a post-colonial success story, with large amounts of political stability and used a mixed economy to go from no economy to one of the largest diamond exporters in the world. Of course, their White-Supremacist neighbors (Rhodesia and Apartied South Africa) didn't like that, so they tried to fund terrorist groups in Botswana's borders. Despite them being surrounded by two hostile forces, they fought off the funded terrorists and established an organization known as the South African Development Community, to help other Sub-Saharan countries develop and fend off those like South Africa and Rhodesia--it even still exists today. Something tells me that Rage and her buddies don't exactly appreciate a country that directly contradicts their White Supremacist beliefs...

I like how rage after storm used Botswana, a country with a very respectable literacy rate of over 85% and a relatively small birth rate of about 2.8%. I know the birth rate is still higher than more devloped countries like japan, USA, etc. But it kinda shows a lot that she thinks she can just take the name of any African country cuz all of em are the same, right?
from another comment, I read that Botswana is a country that managed to overthrow their colonizers and is - at least, definitely economically- thriving. This is unlike the two colonozer-states surrounding it, which seem to have internalized the same hatred of “people who are not them being well”, literally finding terrorists in a (failed) attempt to disrupt and destroy the country.
Rage after storm is a prime example of how you can't trust stereotypes or how a person looks. Looking at her picture she would appear to be relatively modern and forward thinking, then you watch her video and hear her make claims that would make Stephen Crowder look like Hbomberguy.

Is that aimed at me, 6naniko6? Science isn't at all clear on that. Some scientists claim that. As many scientist stated sex was a spectrum. Why can't an effeminate male just be a n effeminate male?
+John NoNameGibbon Well, then you are exactly like any climate change denier and anti-vaxxer. My man SomeBlackGuy doesn't seem to understand that science is always changing, and that scientific theories once accepted have been disproved (i.e. the idea of the aether, which was disproved by the Michelson-Morley Experiment)
Nah. I think we need to go back to the days of spontaneous generation, alchemy, and 4 humors. Because those ideas were proven before germ theory, chemistry and modern medical science.

Such an alchemical framework might actually help explain trans people to them. I had a quick peek at wikipedia, but i'm not an expert on alchemy.)
I like how all of them seem to think that "the science" means "what scientists believed 30 years ago". Like, science moves forward with time. We build our knowledge, we change our ways. A few of them make the argument that "scientists all used to believe this thing!", as if that suddenly means that no longer believing in it is "unscientific" in some way. Some cultures used to (and probably still do) believe that dancing and providing offerings would increase the chance of rain. European doctors used to believe cutting the forearms of patients would help release "bad blood" and cure them of disease. We know these things are unfounded now, because our understanding of the world has improved. We have moved past the age of blood-letting and into the age of antibiotics. Now, we are at a stage where science is moving on from gender-sex equivalence and binary genders into an age where biological sex and gender are separate issues and gender is a social and psychological issue. Even if Bill Nye himself said in his original show that "gender and sex are the same thing" and "there are only two genders", him changing his tune now does not mean he's "forgone science". It means that he's moving ahead with science and adjusting his views based on the current scientific consensus. A lot of these people don't seem to have actually read any of the scientific papers on these topics before spouting about "believing in science" and just assume that our understanding of the world is the same as when they were children. For so-called "sceptics", they really don't delve very deeply into these topics and assume a position before looking at any evidence.
Society - "Why are you onlylistening to one kind of music? You're so narrow minded! Why are you only eating one kind of food? You're so narrow minded! Why do you only hang out in one place? Wtf, that's too much!"

Lately, As a trans man, I've been feeling very Doomer-ish because of all the hate in the media, specifically that one guy on daily wire who said "transgenderism needs to be eradicated" (forgot his name) and even just hearing Hbomb even hint to being pro-trans is a breath of fresh air, and it feels so nice that someone cares... Ty Hbomb!
some advice from my trans gf, please please please PLEASE try your hardest to distance yourself from social media and content online that covers these topics. it's important to be informed but a lot of us take it too far and it becomes all encompassing and depressing. we may be talking with privilege as we live in canada, but it's still rough sometimes since we live in a pretty conservative redneck area of the country. since ive gotten rid of everything but my tumblr ive noticed a massive upturn in my overall moof and happiness. her even more so as she completely distances herself from it.
Hbomb honestly is such a mood booster, I rewatch vids to pique my interest on topics I need to come back to and it honestly really is a breath of fresh air
Hbomberguy is extremely supportive! Not just hinting at it, he did a fundraiser charity stream for trans charities a while back playing donkey Kong 3d over the course of a few days. He even managed to get a few important public figures to voice their support too! Notably on this channel there is a clip of AOC talking about trans rights pulled from that stream.
To be fair the daily wire guy is pretty hard-core, but he didn't say he wanted to eliminate Trans people or anything (so many people have repeated that narrative, but that is the problem with not actually listening to someone firsthand) . Honestly the fact his statement was turned into a physical threat by the media is great example of fear mongering on the other side of the issue. Another example is the "banning of books in Florida", only for me to find out that they were only banning them from schools and it only takes a few minutes of reading them to see why 😂 Daily Wire guy was referring to a movement that he thinks is interested in having kids make lifelong decisions based on what is becoming a "fad" in schools, etc. , along with other problems the "transgenderism" has. I'll be honest, there ARE problems! No one seems to be interested in hearing from individuals who regret having the surgery. No one understands how destructive to a parent- child bond to have a school hide important mental health symptoms from a concerned parent. It is absurd that a teacher is expected to hide something as serious as my child deciding they are a different gender. How absurd. I would bet most of the supporters of this policy don't have children of their own and can't fathom what that would feel like), too many people don't want to recognize the destructive effect that bad trans policy can have on female sports. There many other issues, but the way children and girls specifically are being treated is for sure the biggest problems the majority of people including myself have with the situation. (There are more) So many are quick to call concerns "bigotry", instead of "concerns" My wife is a teacher in Junior- high and there is a disturbing trend of kids abusing these new policies so that they can force teachers to call them a boy's name or force them to allow them to use the boy's bathrooms. These aren't children with gender dysphoria, they are girls with body positivity issues, abuse at home, drug addiction, and depression that have found another form of attention they aren't able to get from their broken home. We used to encourage young people to be happy with the way they were made. Having plastic surgery like breast enlargement, etc. Was not necessary. A teen should work through their discomfort and use the 'equipment' they were born with. For some reason now we've decided that if a young lady is uncomfortable with herself she should be encouraged to think everything will be OK if she can annihilate what makes her a woman and craft a false male part in it's place.....all before she could possibly really know what it means to be a woman! These individuals could possibly never experience the joys of intimacy before they are mutilated. I don't have enough time to type out a full explanation on my phone but consider this: I wonder how many perfectly good gay kids we have been discarding because of the Trans push occurring? Kids should have the opportunity to grow into their natural body before we go altering them! Have a good night!

We actually watched the probability episode in science class, and the teacher had to pause it on the "50/50 chance to have xx or xy" part to explain, actually this is over simplified and its possible to be intersex and have xxx, xxy, and xyy chromosomes.
Revisiting these videos, seeing who I used to watch/support: I'm disgusted in who I was, and I'm glad that I've learned better. HBomberGuy really has helped me improve myself politically and socially
The funniest thing about this to me is that "cis" and "trans" don't come from "SJWs", they come from Latin. "Cis" means "on the same side" and "trans" means "on the other side". From what i know, chemistry uses these terms all the time, hence "transfats". Gee, never knew chemistry was social justice as well.
Well, the word cisgender is from 1991. Latin if just used so it sounds scientific. Since every word of made up I don't have a problem with that. Even if the word wasn't derived from Latin and invented yesterday it still has the same value in describing groupings.
They used it extensively in regards to Gaul. Specifically, they discussed it in terms of which side of the Alps you were on -- Transalpine Gaul and Cisalpine Gaul. Incidentally, Cisalpine Gaul and Transalpine Gaul were two of Caesar's governorships (in addition to Illyria) prior to starting the Civil War he is most known for.
You could have gone even further with dismantling the article about "foreign-born" because the term "foreign-born" is so vast. If a child with an English citizenship was born in France to a pair of English parents then the child is foreign-born. Words, the more you know. Also, Terry Pratchett was a linguistic genius.
No shame in that. Everyone's wrong some of the time. I was an avid watcher of armored sceptics and shoeonheads, I only snapped out of it when they made a list of gender identities into a drinking game. Hopefully they too find their way back to the facts.
Ie. "liberty for me, none for others" crowd. No wonder most of them love kissing billionaires' asses, because they still have plantation era mentality.
Ankle Socks The guy says he's against identity politics - which is using identity (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation) for political leverage. Then he names his channel based on his being black.
Nicholas Harvey no. It’s clearly talking about how he is a black guy but it’s not supposed to be from a place of authority. If you watched his videos you’d know that, but clearly you’re just like the people hbomberguy is criticizing in the video
Quite depressing coming to this video 5 years later when most of these fringe lunatics have been banned but their talking points have been basically mainstreamed.
Cis is a made up word used to marginalize normal people. It's a redundant label. As a normal person I take offense to you not using the correct terms when talking about people like me. Bigot.
3:56 Just wanted to point out that if you’re studying for a bachelor’s degree in psychology, IQ is one of the first things that will get discussed and disputed in the very first year of the course. IQ testing is highly variable and is affected by everything from poor sleep to stress or hunger. You not eating for a bit too long before an IQ test affects your score negatively. Not only that, but there are factors to one’s intelligence that are simply very hard to measure through testing and psychologists agree that at most, IQ is a guideline for a person’s current ability in a set group of fields. I’ll have to find the book we learnt this from to cite it but once I do I’ll put it in an edit here. Pretty sure there are sources online about it though.
This. And at least my Uni has a dedicated module for disproving pseudoscientific myths about the current understanding of many social issues like race, gender, sexuality and feminism IN THE INTRO COURSE.
I am basically always tired and stressed so if i pretend IQ exists and that the score i got is totally genuine it goes from 132 to let's say 150, considering the average worldwide per person, I DID THE MATH MYSELF A WHOLE AGO BTW, the average IQ is 86 or so, literally the only countries that go above a hundred which is supposed to be the average are PRC, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, France, etc. Basically Canada western Europe a bit of central and northern and South East Asia, that's it, IQ is a fucking scam or at the very least extremely variable and inconsistent
Yanno what I love about science. Almost nothing is set in stone. Science is constantly improving and getting better. Things we knew 10 years ago have been turned on it's head, because scientists didn't stop researching. EVEN IF Bill Nye did say what he said in the screenshot, I see NOTHING wrong with him saying "They USED TO THINK blah blah, etc...", and if people are angry about his change in tune, then they really have no idea how science works.
To a degree. There is a good Ted talk that talks about how some parts of scientific understanding have been solidified into static measurements even when they are vairable. ua-cam.com/video/JKHUaNAxsTg/v-deo.html
I have to thank Rage for being my inspiration to get out of the alt-right pipeline. One of her videos undid two years of Ben Shapiro's, Dennis Prager's, and Dave Rubin's work.
For me it was potholer54's rebuttals of Crowder's climate change videos. It made me realize how brazenly they lie and there was no going back after that
I hope that 2 years later you still practice empathy like this. How hard is it to just be respectful? Even if you don't believe in the gender spectrum you can still be a decent human and simply use the pronouns they prefer. I don't think you need to actively be confrontational about it? Its easy to not be an ass.
I’ve been doing a thought experiment where I replace every time someone describes an LGBT character, with the same descriptions of a black person. It’s a very easy way to find bigotry. Especially where I live lol
Wholeheartedly agree, I encountered the term in my materials science class when we covered orientation of crystal matrices. 'Cis' is a prefix, and the peeps hbomberguy covered blew it way out of proportion :P
Just came back to this video years later to find I had previously disliked it. Now that I know better I'm honestly pretty embarrassed at what and who I believed. If you ever see this, thanks for your work Hbomberguy.
By god, watching hours of alt-right and "skeptic" videos must take a toll on someone's mental health. Props to you for putting yourself through this, dude. Also, it's at least a little bit pathetic that alt-right borderline white supremacists claim that the "establishment" is leftist when it's far from it.

Being trans/nonbinary is so frustrating sometimes. My identity's very existence is constantly up for debate, and no one bothers to ask me what I think. Like, I'm right here, guys, stop talking about me like I'm not. "Is nonbinary real?" YES I'M RIGHT HERE!!!!! Oh right, I'm the delusional snowflake weirdo, my opinion on my own identity's existence means nothing because cis people have to decide if I'm valid or not first. Silly me. *infinite eyerolls.*
I used to be in the rabbit hole of anti-sjw content. I watched all the big ones like thunderfoot, sargan, etc. Watched creators who made the typical edgy teenage boy content, saying the n word and making horrific "jokes" because "nothing is off limits". But since I first saw your videos in 2019, I did a 180 and am infected with feminism. Used to say gender fluid and non-binary weren't real things but now I identify as non-binary. The anti-sjw community made me shove down and ignore my gender identity issues for so long, it's nice to be who I really am. Thank you for making these videos. 💞
Every so often I still get notifications for replies for really old comments I made on videos like those that are all satirical like "this offends me as a demigenderfluidflux star gender non-binary gay asexual half aroace >:((" but now I am demigender, genderfluid/flux, non-binary gay, xenic, oriented aroace and I just die a little inside having to relive how internally miserable I was at the time
It's so funny how many comments like this there are, someone should so a study on the "anti-SJW in 2014 -- trans pipeline", speaking as one myself. We should start a support group lmao
Honestly I find this whole thing about Bill Nye hilarious. It seems like people forgot that they were children when they saw the show and that the show was focused on their demographic therefore did not touch on anything that parents may find offensive. Now that they are adults (like their parents who would have been offended) and Bill has grown up with them is treating them as adults now he has betrayed them by talking about the points he would have brought up to teach them the real science.
It's amazing how I only ever hear that being Bi or Trans is cool when people say you are only being Bi or Trans to be cool. I honestly don't recall it being said in any other context.

Fun fact, from someone taking a university course in genetics right now:
It's not even "chromosomes" that determine biological sex. (And that's not mention people who are XXY, XXX, or any other combination which defies the typical XX/XY dichotomy.)
Basically, even if you ignore (for some unfathomable reason) people who aren't just XX or XY, it would still be false to assume that all XX people are biologically female and all XY people are biologically male.
I learned this stuff in highschool, it's so wild for me that this isn't common knowledge at this point. It was very rudimentary but it was a start.
@@boginoid Well these days you can apparently be biology and endocrinology expert by yelling at a camera.

There are genetic variations between humans, and different statistical measurements between various groups, but:

Another example is the "banning of books in Florida", only for me to find out that they were only banning them from schools and it only takes a few minutes of reading them to see why 😂
Daily Wire guy was referring to a movement that he thinks is interested in having kids make lifelong decisions based on what is becoming a "fad" in schools, etc. , along with other problems the "transgenderism" has.
(There are more)
So many are quick to call concerns "bigotry", instead of "concerns"
My wife is a teacher in Junior- high and there is a disturbing trend of kids abusing these new policies so that they can force teachers to call them a boy's name or force them to allow them to use the boy's bathrooms.
To be fair, "eradicating" is referring the ideology of it, not YOU. Same how eradicating alcoholism DOESN'T involve bashing alcoholics heads in. =)

Yep, I'm sure the Romans also talked forever about which gender they identify as.
I love the chemical use of the terms. Cis-structures are abstract, but important for chemical geometry.
Theese words have a quite big meaning in chemistry.
Wouldn't by that definition Boris Johnson be foreign born? :D

"i don't think you can get a negative score on an IQ test" 🤡

Now that they are adults (like their parents who would have been offended) and Bill has grown up with them is treating them as adults now he has betrayed them by talking about the points he would have brought up to teach them the real science.
