People seem to forget that Night of the Living Dead (1968) was one of Shinji Mikami favorite movies and inspiration for Capcom’s Resident Evil series.

His best piece of “work” in regards to pen on paper is definitely DAY of the Dead on my opinion; the characters and the loss of humanity and just pure dread and misery.
Day is the essential zombie film in my opinion, even more than Dawn
Yep .. I get so tired of people droning on about Dawn ... The first half hour or so is pretty good, the Goblin score is great, but the effects are really bad and a lot of it just comes off as goofy. The satire about consumerism is on the nose, and not all that impressive really. The main problem with it is how slow it is ... I find it pretty boring and unwatchable towards the middle. Overrated movie .. it's OK, but it's not that great. Day of the Dead on the other hand is a piece of pure art ... I've watched it over and over since I was a kid and I still love it. I just don't understand why that movie isn't the one people talk about. It's just weird to me... The zombie action was pure insanity and the effects were perfection ... The acting was extreme B movie territory but so engaging and hilarious at times. 10 out of 10 for Day of the Dead .... Dawn gets a 4 or 5 .... Hell I liked the Night of the Living Dead and its 1990 remake better than Dawn.
He made the military characters way too excessively dumb and unlikable.
@@johnwayne8494 Well .. to be fair .. most military people are pretty dumb. Unless you're talking about Air force engineers etc ... but even those guys are mostly slaves to the left brain.. otherwise they wouldn't be working for the military.
@@Fiveash-ArtAlthough Day has maybe the best zombie effects I have ever seen, Dawn's world is so disturbing yet powerfully intriguing, it's clear to me why its cultural influence was so huge. Supposedly the movie was not even attempting satire and merely had a mall available as a shooting location, which I can believe. I'd call Night the overrated one, but only because it's so hyperbolically praised, none of them are what I'd call a weak link.
Night of the Living Dead was a revelation, largely because its grainy black and white photography imparted a compelling documentary realism that gave the film a sense of immediacy. The film was also exceptionally disciplined in terms of tone and atmosphere (the dialogue, in spots, might be another matter.) The film was clearly influenced by the post war Italian neo-realist style, an unusual pedigree for an American horror film. Dawn of the Dead is Romero's masterpiece, bringing in that whopping satirical subtext of consumerist critique, while delivering a lively and thoughtful action film as well that was also damn scary. Both films are exceptionally unique and original.

The first movie has an atmosphere that also feels like a first. It feels deep and serious, whereas the previous horror was really theatrical. THere's something else maybe accidental about film stock and lighting that gives it a special atmosphere of its own.
I saw this for the first and only time when I was 14. I was dropped off at home by my girlfriends mother and the house was empty. My dumb self chose to watch Night of the Living Dead for some reason and it scared the crap outta me.
I worked with a man who was one of the dozens of zombie extras. He's the tall one with a shock of red hair that's identifiable even in black & white. He mentioned that it was one of the best managed shoots he worked on during his time as an extra.

Bought it on criterion and it was worth it.
I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen it but I plan on watching it tonight I was going to ask if anyone here would recommend the theatrical cut or the extended 'cannes' cut as I wasn't sure what the difference was and saw both on prime. There is also an Argento cut but I know to save that for another time.

I recommend the Cannes Cut. The Romero Cut is brilliant but the Cannes Cut adds to that in my opinion by fleshing out the characters a little better. But you can't do wrong with the Romero Cut either. The Argento Cut is alright but in my opinion subpar to the other cuts.
i would say watch both, theatrical first

Bill Hader is great on horror because he's a super scaredy cat in real life. I don't mean that as an insult. Horror writer/creators are only good if they are like this. He still wears a mask to friend's houses! Weird but you want horror actor/director/writers to find fear in everything. This is the future of horror. Their observance of fear everywhere will create new horror genres.
I have a feeling horror movies are going to get better because subliminal fears are increasing. People won't know why they are even afraid. Anyway, good for horror art.
NOTLD was good, then George Romero made some real stinkers too, mostly between the first one and Dawn of the Dead. Some of the early ones are like a homage to Ed Wood in how bad they are. It's like they took left over footage and added some new stuff and made two or three more movies.
