I made the clamp today the way you originally made yours and when I came into the house this afternoon I saw this video that shows how to improve it. EXCELLENT. I can redo them tomorrow as I made 2. Thanks Earl

I made an improvement to the stop. Make it 3-4 inches long and sanded one side to 45 both sides to make a point that will seat in the v groove at the end of the stick. This lets it lock in when wound tight and you dont need the screwdriver.

Earl, I have seen you use your string clamp many times but was not terribly impressed. I have been a steel hose clamp user for years and have been mostly satisfied up to now. Now that I have seen this build for your string clamp I am looking at it in a new light. I am not ready to give up on my steel hose clamps just yet but I am certainly going to build one of your string clamps and give it a try. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.🙂🙂

I built several of Earl's clamps several years ago ... they serve me well. I teach segmented turning at a local tech college, and in my class on jigs and fixtures, I show my students how to make Earl's clamps. Merry Christmas Earl!

This man is a gem! Reminds me so much of my grandfather - more knowledge in his head than in a book. I'm just getting into segmented turning. I'll never make pieces as beautiful as his, but that isn't the goal.
Thank you Earl Merry Christmas to you and your family.

i have been using your clamp design for quite a while . But in the last 6 months I started making them from 3/4" PVC pipe. I heat the pipe with a heat gun , place it in my wood vice when pliable insert a piece of wood 5/16X1" then compress it. I use a no stretch clothes line rope with a knot on one end, I suppose a loop would work if tight for a lasso effect. I just use wire ties to contain the ropes. It takes 2 ties to keep the rope from slipping when you twist the rope tight. I compress about 8" of the pipe and cut to the desired length when cool. before I cut itI drill a 3/8 hole in its center for the screw driver to anchor in. For the far end heat it and flare the ends out to a curve for rope to glide on. I know this sounds complicated, but it is real simple. the hardest thing is getting the pipe to the plyable stage. If you decide to try this remember the pipe is not pliable until very HOT!
