I just picked up the CX-70 Premium plus in white last week (Non EV version - inline6/340HP. To be honest, in the price range it was a clear cut winner over everything else I looked at and drove, considering that most others are 4Cyl now.
This vehicle is really in a category of it's own when you look at it being a PHEV of this size for this price. I have a RAV4 Prime and when I drive around town, 95 % of the time I'm in electric mode and it's a hoot. I imagine it will be the same for a lot of the buyers of this car so for those who might find the shifting a little harsh, many will not experience it that much. Many won't notice it in the first place. If you test drive this be sure to drive it in full electric for a while to get sense for it. When I went to test drive PHEV's the dealerships often did not have them charged up. That was 2021, hopefully it's better now. But if you had an appointment I'd asked them to be sure it's fully charged.
The transmission shifts harder because it is not a traditional torque converted auto. The software updates refined the shifts relatively - but it cannot shift as a torque converted transmission. In return it has better mpg
1:26 The Polymetal Gray Metallic is the best color for the CX-70, followed by the Zircon Sand which looks like a very unique color. I don't see any other cars available with that kind of color. Even the Rhodium White Metallic looks beautiful with the black accents
I like the “jog-left for Park” shifter for one simple reason: In my 46 years of driving, this is the only vehicle I’ve ever owned (among dozens of both new & used ones) with an automatic transmission. I no longer have a option of a manual transmission on the vast majority of vehicles (note: the Ford Bronco has a 6+1 speed available by special request), so getting Park out of the straight line of R-N-D (no L) is to my (& admittedly only my) liking.
There isn't really any extra space over the cx90. You are paying for a three row and getting a two row the size of a three row that's on the lot right next to it.
I actually like having more underfloor storage rather than a 3rd row, but that’s because of my lifestyle. Kinda nice that Mazda gives you two options for the same size vehicle.
@@PresidentJackBauer The CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus is $500 more than the CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus ($59,405 vs $58,905) so there *is* a price difference there. Frankly, I think it should be a $1K difference, but the CX-70 does come out slightly cheaper in this scenario.
I read many of these types of reviews before buying a CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus and regrettably, instead of finding new things to enjoy about the car, I'm finding new things to dislike. Here is my real life dislike list that may help someone who is shopping. 1.) High beam headlights casts a weird shadow in the field of view. 2.) If a navigation in app like Waze via Android Auto is cancelled, the last direction remains in the HUD. 3.) The battery gets used in every drive mode except when "prioritize charge mode" is engaged. In Pri. Charge Mode, the engine revs/idles high and feels rough, supposedly because its ready to charge the battery. 4.) It's super easy to loose something small between the seat and center console & really difficult to retrieve it. 5.) The moonroof is the weirdest ever... partially opens and lots of wind noise when normal driving. Plus, the tilt feature is not really a tilt 😯. 6.) The Daytime running lights means the "headlights" stay on during the day and not just the LEDs in the grille like every other new car design. This does not look cool. 7.) There is a dummy light section in the headlights for the PHEV Premium Plus which is an actual LED beam in other CX70 trims. 8.) The tail light section on the PHEV rear hatch does not light up as it does in other CX70 trims. (you have to buy & replace them yourself to have working lights ~ $500 & couple hours of DIY effort. 9.) Keep your hand off the shifter while driving, its super easy to nudge the transmission into "N". Reviews are ok, but they don't mention these fine points. If these are things you don't care about then you should be otherwise happy. BTW, there is already a recall/TSB on the car software to fix an issue where the car can suddenly go completely dead.
This is such a cut throat segment! Kudos to Mazda for a pretty solid entry. Murano was just redesigned. The Outback is the best selling. The Crown Signia is all new and the Passport and Santa Fe both look excellent. Also, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Blazer are competitive. Does anyone know if Ford will continue to make the Edge?
Fuel economy needs to improve for Outback. Maybe a hybrid down the line? I doubt it. Crown Signia is a very serious competitor, and I often describe it as a hybrid version of the Outback and a lot of people’s ears perk up with that. CX70 PHEV is also pretty good, at least for me. Maybe I will wait for 2 more years for a more refined engine
The first Mazda Lyn reviewed was the 1967 Cosmo Sport. It was a real breakthrough for sports cars, reaping the benefits of a rotary engine with 491cc x 2 capacity. Sadly Lyn was only 3 years old at the time so she had a very limited vocabulary and only her parents could understand what she was on about..
You can lease these in Colorado for about $300 a month after tax for 24 months. Is there a better deal? Nope! This has to be one of the best vehicle deals on the market today!
Counterpoint on the interior: in almost any cross comparison the Mazda will be less spacious; due to the rear wheel bias and placement of the transmission the center console cubby is useless; the wireless charger does not hold the phone in place; if you are over 6’1” the drivers seat will provide very little thigh support (I understand that is a minority of people); Mazda UI technology really lags other manufacturers.
Don’t know why everyone’s up in arms about this when VW basically does this with the Atlas, minus some more significant body changes, as does Honda with the Pilot/Passport, albeit with some more structural changes, or Jeep with the Grand Cherokee.
I like your description of the drivetrain. I think these phevs got it backwards. They should be electric with the gas engine acting solely as a generator. They should let you run the generator at a low rpm while you drive and let you run it while it's parked up to like a 50 percent charge or something.
A 12 gallon tank for something that size? Weird. My previous X3 held over 15 gallons. At 12 gallons, you’re still looking at a 672 mile range (56x12), or 128 miles less than a thought rather than 400 (half).
@@epbrown0156 is the mpge figure, the equivalent if you charge up the battery and operate as much as possible in EV mode. On a roadtrip though, only filling with gas will bring your fuel economy down to 27mpg I believe.
@@epbrown01 the mpg is more like 25-30mpg. 56 mpge does not equal 56 mpg. 12 gal is without reserve. Likely it’s a 15 gal total. Of course the average mpg my car displays will be closer to 45 mpg in my case, that is because I use electric mode in some sections (the car won’t count the electricity consumed)
1:43 shows an INCORRECT color. It is definitely NOT “Crystal Soul Red Metallic”. Kinda close, I suppose, but wouldn’t it be more professional to get the colorways right? That’s quite a gaff, but no one is perfect, I suppose. 😢
Oof newbie in the PHEV space resulted in a clumsy trans performance. Follows the rule of “don’t buy a first gen” product. Still, go Mazda you can refine it!
Am i the only person that remembers when vehicles had the maze like shifters. i.e. 2nd gen tacoma's. i think this is okay. maybe not perfect, but okay.
Man, the operation off the line does not sound appealing at all. None of these issues with the Rav4 Prime (PHEV) which I feel is a direct competitor with this vehicle with a much better setup. Between the likely depreciation of the Mazda and lackluster performance, not sure why anyone would pay up to $10k more for a vehicle like this over the Prime. And Prime gets 94 mpge over the lackluster 56 mpge for this and electric range is like 60% of what you get on the Toyota. I think they are aiming way too high with the price of this thing. Edmunds says average price paid for one of these is $7,000 over a new BMW X3! If I wanted something like this I would probably go with a low mileage 2 year old BMW X5 xDrive 50e which has been time tested and is way more smooth. Have seen some with like 6k on them for ~$50,000 on Autotrader. More EV range on that also.
Lynn, I usually agree with your reviews and assessments but in this case allow me to differ. The cx-70 is very nice and luxury looking from the front but, the rear is like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mazda made the same mistake it made between the cx- and cx-50. Competing with each other. It should had followed the Honda formula with the Pilot and Passport. Use the underpinnings, engines and dash layout, shorten it by 6-9 inches decrease the price by $5k and you are competing in a different segment. Plus by shortening it I believe the driving dynamic complaints would go away. Also the gear shifter needs immediate "reassignment" to normal. Otherwise people would prefer the 3 row version and shop another true luxury brand since the price of this is already in the Genesis, Acura, Infiniti territory.
All of these weird shift things are dumb. New Audi reverse is forward?? Why? Makes no sense, my Q5 is very nice, but miss my Cx5 shifter. Not to mention not being able to shut the rear gate from inside!!?? Why!!??
I'm gonna be honest the Mazda CX-70 is just a smaller version of the CX-90 just only has 2 rows and so does the CX-50 and the CX-5 even though it's smaller in my opinion the CX-70 should've either came out as a pickup truck or wagon/avant
