How To Make Band Saw Wheels from Plywood

- The wheels are made from two layers of 1/2" Baltic birch plywood, plus hubs for the lower drive shaft and upper bearings. Plywood has durability and strength but the varying density makes it more difficult to balance. A better choice would be particle board, but I didn't have any on hand and I didn't want to buy a full sheet just for this.
I sized the wheels so that when the tires are put on the total diameter will be 12"

I know you stated on your other channel that you were still undecided about selling the plans for this on your website. I really hope you eventually do. As much as I like the Wandel bandsaw, the required equipment needed to build it is a bit more than many have. I like that yours can be built by someone who has a very basic setup. It is almost like a "step 2" project, after a table saw, that will launch you into building all of the other projects.
P.S. I love the aesthetic you've created lately. The tools are as beautiful as they are functional.
Your projects and skills have always been way beyond many UA-cam woodworkers.

Awesome as usual, John! I'll definitely get those plans whenever they come out! This bandsaw is the right size for my small garage shop and would be an upgrade from my cheap and rather tiny band saw
Very good job Mr. Heisz. Today it is not profitable to build one of those saws, unless you have remnants from another project. Only, (to start with something), the price of wood is through the roof. In any case, his work method is highly professional and detailed. I like it a lot.

at the moment it's a toss up between yours and Matthais' designs to replace the 500 Dollar P.O.S. thing I mistakenly purchased a couple of years ago from my local hardware store. (for those in Australia, avoid, at all costs, the Full Boar brand bandsaw, it's utter shjite!)
Full Boar is a Bunnings house brand. Wouldn’t trust any of it.

Craftright is the generic Bunnings brand.

At meat lockers they use band saws to break down the beef carcasses into manageable pieces. It was my job to clean all the utensils, so I know how to take a band saw apart and put it back together. Never seen one made from scratch like this before though.

Did I see correctly? The edge of the wheels holding the blade is convex and not concave? Other than my confusion, it looks great.

This saw is elegant. Matthias saws are more brute force
BTW, I wonder if those industrial sewing machine DC motors with speed controller would work fine for this application. I've seen people using them on benchtop drill presses replacing the original weaker (1/3 to 1/2 HP) motors and those things seem to have plenty of torque, at least for drill press usage.

If you had filed flats under the stop collar set screws on your axles to help keep them from slipping and insuring a sold grip on your axles?

Nice. I was wondering though, I noticed you balanced the wheels then did a bunch of stuff to them. Would all those changes that not affect the balance of the wheels or is it insignificant?

This looks awesome John!! I have one question, is it possible to make a band saw with four smaller wheels, like a belt grinder? I have a small, no a tiny shop and I would like to have a bandsaw but a regular one won't fit. Is that possible to make?
They have some really small band saws at menards I seen the other day, idk what you would use it for. But they are so little
So after balancing the wheels by drilling holes and or adding screws, did you not then make more holes to attach that second idea to align the wheels?
Most of the material from that hole will have compressed into the wood. A tiny portion would have come out. You’re right, but I reckon the impact would’ve been within his margin of error for balancing it anyway.
Where can we source saw blades for such, and what specks are neede?
Hi John I have watched so many of your videos & you clearly swear by polyurethane construction adhesive, can you please recommend a product to use that they sell in the UK.
Its gonna be sweet John. Unrelated question. You use a lot of PL, how do you keep the tube from drying out after you open it? I often wish they made it in smaller squeeze tubes because I end up with a lot of half tubes that dry out before I can use.it again.

I don't know how John does it, but I'll tell you how I do it. I get a big drywall screw, the coarsest I can find, and push it into the end of the tube. Then I take several layers of plastic bag and put that over the screw and the cut end of the tube, and wrap that all well with electrical tape, to make the most airtight seal possible. But undoubtably, when reopening it, there will have been some air leakage and there is a small plug of dried PL at the end, so I grab the drywall screw with a pair of vise-grips and just yank it out. Most of the time that will pull out the entire plug, but if not, I saw the head off another long coarse drywall screw, chuck it up in my drill, and use that as a sort of spinning reamer to pull the remaining chunks of dried glue out of the passageway. 99% of the time, that solves it.
@@jimthesoundman8641 thanks Jim. I've tried the screw method before with tape but don't know if I used plastic with it. Normally I just let it dry into a plug then just cut the tip lower. Its not ideal because you get a gigantic opening. It also sometimes dries the whole thing out depending on how much is left. I've also tried those store bought plugs... they don't work.
We can put a man on the moon but can't make a resealable caulking tube : )

John, in the description, about the Plywood Wheels, you say: A better choice would be particle board... Do you have any thoughts on MDF, or Masonite?
I made the wheels on my band saw mill from MDF.

Honest question: why does a crowned wheel help the blade track? It seems counter-intuitive to the brain in my thick skull.
