You have given Tidradio a fair shake in my opinion, and your concerns are valid. Unfortunately people buy these radios because of their low prices, and they do not care about or fully understand the effects of operating them. I think the false claim of FCC certification is really enough to prohibit the importation and sale of the units. The FCC should tighten up enforcement of their rules. Good job on the review.

Dude, another objective video that's very helpful to anyone considering the H8. I have the ham version as well and have several of the same issues. With the original firmware mine worked with Odmaster, and it is the compelling feature of the radio, assuming the other issues were addressed. Odmaster, at least when I used it, requests a phone / email but doesn't force it -- of course, they didn't get mine. Appreciate you telling it as you see it.
That's good to know. It sounds like they may have changed the app a bit. Originally, as I recall; it wasn't even on the app store, which seemed like a red flag also. Glad they got it sorted out, wish I could have tested it. Thanks! I'll look forward to hearing more of your thoughts
Great honest review. I got the GMRS version. The TX, RX & BT worked for me... But... There are firmware issues that make me think that this should've never been released. It's sad that we now pay our money (I realize they sent you over for review) to be their beta testers. I was about to buy the HAM version, till I saw this video. Thank you.
If you want the ham radio version, just open up the software and immediately select the com Port then click write (with no code plug or firmware selected). I believe that should then turn it into a ham radio version. I can get a video if you'd like

Yeah, after they were caught stealing passwords with the OD Master app (see my other video), I don't think they want me touching their radio or brand. However, if I knew somebody with the new version who would send it to me, I'd be happy to test it

I think we're all aware by now that there is often little truth in advertising on these types of Chinese-made radios (output watts, battery capacity, FCC certs, etc.), so there's trade offs to be sure. Thanks to reviews like this one, the buyer has his/her eyes wide open before a purchase. Hit or miss in quality, definitely. I'm a QC/QA manager and I have always longed for the day when quality control on Chinese made items becomes consistent and reliable. They've become the manufacturers to the world (but not innovators); but, at least this quality inconsistency has prevented complete and total dependence on foreign made products. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. But, for newcomers who do not want to spend a lot of money, if they are careful and know what they are buying, they can get a radio that allows them to enjoy the hobby....just buy from a place with a good return/exchange policy!! And Yaesu advertisements usually do not make outrageous untrue claims regarding power output, as Chinese vendors do. My point was not regarding mfg origin, but rather QC and truth in advertising. Hey I'll reply here also - I'm guessing because they want you to upgrade the firmware to unlock it and then it will be 10 watts. That's my guess though. I don't support Tidradio after my last interactions with them, but you can try it if you would like. I'd assume the firwmare is the HAM software, not sure though - www.walkietalkiesoftware.com/portal/index/software_detail/id/49.html . Do that at your own risk.
This honestly looks like a Poor copy attempt at the Radioddity GS-5B, which we have two of and they seem like great little radio's, I don't have a way to test for spectral purity, but everything works as it should and the programming software is fine, the bluetooth programming works great too actually. Plus They are USB chargeable (even though its micro and not USB C). I've always stayed away from Tidradio, maybe they can get better and be another competitor in the market. Great and helpful video, as always, hope they dig down and try a little harder over at Tidradio, they are always just not quite meeting the minimum bar it seems like. Had one of their radios that was "just ok" for most normal intents and purposes, but annoying to program for sure, lots of software issues and gotchas, and in the end I ultimately gave it away to someone with a narrow simple use case that it could be good enough for. I'd just rather have a Baofeng for the money.

You said 1/4 Watt out at 146 MHz which would be about 24 dBm. Your SA graph showed the fundamental at -23 dBm, so I guess your attenuator was about 47 dB... does that sound right? I'll add 47 dBm to your -53 dBm second harmonic level to get -6 dBm, second harmonic corrected for attenuation. Whoops, that's 251 uW and only 30 dBc (dB "down") from the fundamental so no good per FCC 97.307. My first, *wrong* reply: The only thing I saw "wrong" about your spectral measurement is that -53 dBm is less than 10 µW which makes it OK at 2m where you were testing. Citing FCC 97.307 (e): "The mean power of any spurious emission [...] between 30-225 MHz [...] need not be reduced below the power of 10 µW"

I think my brain is having a difficult time understanding the first part vs the second part, if you can help me out a tad. We are definitely not below 40db if I'm reading the chart correctly. With the fundamental being -23 and the harmonic being -53... That's 30. So even though it's not below 40, it's still less than 10uw (how did you get the fancy u, btw), which makes it okay? If that's the case, would it be wise to remove the attenuation and test again? I'm very thankful for any suggestions you do have and taking the time to help others with some great input. Update to my response (after seeing your update:) I forgot to add my attenuation in the video. That would be near accurate assumption of my attenuation based on an external attenuator which was advertised as 45db. I do have a 6dB attenuator also, which I could utilize in conjunction with the rigol built in attenuator, if you'd like me to run more tests. Or if you recommend any great attenuators, I would not be opposed to purchasing more. Spectrum analyzers are something I don't frequently use, but I love the concept of learning more and more. I'm fairly new at this myself, so you guys just give me the opportunity to practice what I think I know and learn more along the way ;) A couple of years ago I got super lucky on an ebay deal (about $280) for an R&S CMU300 with a melted display faceplate (just removed it). That unit accepts up to 47 dBm (50W) input, so I haven't had to worry about attenuators so far. Downside is its spectrum analysis starts at 10MHz, though it does single frequency power measurement down to 1MHz. I've poor-boyed HF spectrum analysis at 160m, 80m and 40m by tuning it up through the harmonics one at a time. Gives a feller appreciation for the right-er equipment :| How to type the "µ" (mu) symbol: Hold down the ALT key and type the digits 2 3 0. But I have to Google it every time myself ;)

According to TIDRADIO as of 5/9/23 the FCC ID was uploaded with a format error for the H8 GMRS and needs to be corrected on the FCC site. I looked up the FCC ID info and here is how you access it per TIDRADIO. Grantee Code: 2AWL3 Product Code: -TDH8GMRS, it has to have a negative sign in front of TDH8GMRS. You might know this already. Hope this helps.
The ham radio still isn't available on Amazon. This review is 5 months old (3/14/23). Has anything changed? How about Amazon Android, is that compatible? Do they have a list?
Mine is arriving today. Just placed a cancellation request. Bought it thinking that it would be better than a baufang, but seems to be the same quality but with more deception. Rather pay $25 for a BAOFENG GT-5R. Thank you for all your hard work and effort into this video. Really does help a lot. Especially as a beginner in ham radio.
i have no issues with mine none of that false positive. the programming app for android lacks some but it works and mine works great. i got mine for 60 not on prime day
My guess low is 0.05 medium is 4-5 watts 10-12 watts on high 0.05 watts 7-12 hour stand-by 5 watts 2-4 hours pending on usage 10-12 watts 30-90min or less on stand-by in use 15-25 min
Good review, other items A- no alias- channel naming B- it's probably FCC Part15( which it didn't pass) C- maybe it stuck in narrow band, really narrow D- if it picks up room lighting, the selectivity is as bad as the transmitter If radio manufacturers want a new gimmick. Make the PTT-ID actually work and be able to read it on the radio display (like W9XXX) would display on the other person radio (like Caller ID) 73 W9DLP
Re: "B-" Amateur radios are usually tested (without TXing) only to Part 15 as "unintentional radiators" but GMRS radios have to pass Part 95 certification to be legally marketed in the US.
I don't understand why these companies are putting any effort into developing their own programming software. Just send the spec directly to the CHIRP team, even send them a free radio, and put "supported by CHIRP" directly on the box.
I bought four of these. Sending them all back to Amazon. On full power they made a weird noise. They all came with different antennas too. Two of them came with gmrs only antennas in the 440 range so even if you mars modded it, you couldn’t transmit on 144 range. The software, while I was able to get it to work, it would crash consistently. I also didn’t like the social media login required. I really like the UI of the radio, the 10 watts, the usbc charging and Bluetooth capabilities. It’s just not ready for prime time yet, too many bugs that need to be worked out. If they work out the issues I would buy again. Will wait to see what v3 looks like and do extensive research next time. This could be the baofeng killer for new hams. I definitely wanted to buy these for my family because it was easier to use.
I think it's a fair assessment that ANY of these Chicom radios are junk. Period. You get what you pay for, and you're paying for junk. Personally, I do care that these radios throw spurious emissions everywhere.
Technically it's not legal to advertise this radio (even as an affiliate) as a GMRS radio when it doesn't have valid FCC certification. It's too bad so many manufacturers are cheating now - it's a bit unfair considering the hard work conscientious manufacturers/dealers put in to try and follow the rules, even when we don't agree with some of them. :(
I've tried for one hour to respond to this in a manner which would be kept civil.... but I just can't (but I'll try) If this is the bridge you want to take - report me to the FCC. In the past two months: My Glasses have offended people, Me Drinking water has offended people, and now; My alerting the public of the shady practices of TIDRADIO STEALING PASSWORDS, Faking FCC ID's, and LYING to everyone is offending. Yet if I didn't release the video series, I would be the bad guy and conspiring with TIDRADIO for withholding information which the public now has access to reference. How would the consumer feel if I knew about all this and didn't make it known? ______ Look, I get it you are upset, but I can't really justify you coming on here and telling me what I should do on my channel. Ultimately I am the one who has to make the decisions as to what is best for my channel and what isn't. AKA, you worry about your business, I'll worry about mine. If you want to be upset that this video exists, keeping in mind of all the very useful information in all three episodes, please send your complaints about my video to the FCC. Honestly if you truly cared, this video could have been sent to them 6 months ago as well as to Amazon as proof to have the radio pulled then. ______ I'll leave it at that for now. I wish you and your company the best. Afterall, you got your free advertising by leaving an absurd comment, right?
I got a two-pack for $80. I will say that the app is junk. Could I use it in a pinch? Yes, but Chirp is so much better. So far, no other complaints although I have yet to put it through some serious testing.
OK, so far I’ve discovered that the stock antenna is trash - little better than a dummy load. I haven’t put it on an analyzer yet, but repeaters that are close to full quieting on other HTs are barely breaking squelch with the stock antenna. Replace it with the stock antenna from a Baofeng UV-5R and it’s MUCH better, but not GOOD. I’m going to order a better one and see if it’s useable. On the other hand, I was able to charge the radio with a 6W solar panel - which is a nice capability to have. - de AB2M

Thank you for showing the steps to check the FCC database. Between when the video was made and when I viewed it 2AWL3-TDH8 received approval and your extra step to show me how to check let me get the updated information.
People are individuals capable of making their own decisions, despite my opinions. I put time and effort into the whole series, why wouldn't I put an affiliate link up. If after watching my video they ultimately decide to purchase the product, great..... They were informed and supported me for the video I made even if it doesn't correlate with their opinion .

Great vid brother. Sry you had to be the one to show us this garbage. So not to be that guy (but I'm gonna be), has anyone told the FCC that Tidradio appears to be falsifying certification records? Since the FCC is a federal agency it's likely a federal crime. Again, not to be that guy, but who knows how many other times they've done this (or plan on doing it). It's all around bad for the hobby to let this stuff happen, so the FCC should at least be informed to watch out for that company and potential future scams. Anyway, keep up the great work!
Anybody really thinking they need a 10 Watt portable, is a bit crazy. No portable is designed properly for 10 Watt operation, lack of heat dissipation, excessive current draw, spurious emissions are probably high. How is the receive sensitivity? Looks like another toy. So what, FCC certification means nothing. Most radios are operating within limits for spectral purity, harmonics and receiver selectivity and sensitivity.
They sent me the GMRS version of this radio. I've literally had the exact same issues with it. The software won't even see the com port it's on so I can't put the newest firmware on it. BTW, there is a screen protector on it. That bit of dust is under the protector. Look at the bottom right of the screen and you can see where it is starting to peel up. I had to use tweezers.
So the workaround is easy. I can message you or make a quick video if you'd like. But it's a matter of Rollin back there prolific drivers to a driver from I Think 2008

Sure. What emergency channels/frequencies are you looking for? Do you have a list of them?
According to TIDRADIO as of 5/9/23 the FCC ID was uploaded with a format error for the H8 GMRS and needs to be corrected on the FCC site. I looked up the FCC ID info and here is how you access it per TIDRADIO. Grantee Code: 2AWL3 Product Code: -TDH8GMRS, it has to have a negative sign in front of TDH8GMRS. You might know this already. Hope this helps.
Which cable do you use to connect to CHIRP? That radio supports BT, can you use BT to CHIRP?
I'm not even sure chirp is supported. If it is, I would doubt Bluetooth would be supported
The battery looks like a Vertex model, but the contacts are raised, where the Vertex version, is not.

What frequency are you trying to transmit on, is that frequency restricted on the version radio you purchased? Finally, have you unlocked it?
The ham radio still isn't available on Amazon. This review is 5 months old (3/14/23). Has anything changed? How about Amazon Android, is that compatible? Do they have a list?

Mine is arriving today. Just placed a cancellation request. Bought it thinking that it would be better than a baufang, but seems to be the same quality but with more deception. Rather pay $25 for a BAOFENG GT-5R.

i have no issues with mine none of that false positive. the programming app for android lacks some but it works and mine works great. i got mine for 60 not on prime day

A- no alias- channel naming
B- it's probably FCC Part15( which it didn't pass)
C- maybe it stuck in narrow band, really narrow
D- if it picks up room lighting, the selectivity is as bad as the transmitter
If radio manufacturers want a new gimmick. Make the PTT-ID actually work and be able to read it on the radio display (like W9XXX) would display on the other person radio (like Caller ID)

Re: "B-" Amateur radios are usually tested (without TXing) only to Part 15 as "unintentional radiators" but GMRS radios have to pass Part 95 certification to be legally marketed in the US.

I don't understand why these companies are putting any effort into developing their own programming software. Just send the spec directly to the CHIRP team, even send them a free radio, and put "supported by CHIRP" directly on the box.
So is that TID raido gmrs or ham?
They're the same radio with software mods locking or unlocking the correct frequencies.
You need to update your video, the h8 is now FCC certified and all the bugs and everything that you said needed to be fixed has been fixed.

I bought four of these. Sending them all back to Amazon. On full power they made a weird noise. They all came with different antennas too. Two of them came with gmrs only antennas in the 440 range so even if you mars modded it, you couldn’t transmit on 144 range. The software, while I was able to get it to work, it would crash consistently. I also didn’t like the social media login required.
I really like the UI of the radio, the 10 watts, the usbc charging and Bluetooth capabilities. It’s just not ready for prime time yet, too many bugs that need to be worked out.
If they work out the issues I would buy again. Will wait to see what v3 looks like and do extensive research next time. This could be the baofeng killer for new hams. I definitely wanted to buy these for my family because it was easier to use.

I think it's a fair assessment that ANY of these Chicom radios are junk. Period. You get what you pay for, and you're paying for junk. Personally, I do care that these radios throw spurious emissions everywhere.
Technically it's not legal to advertise this radio (even as an affiliate) as a GMRS radio when it doesn't have valid FCC certification. It's too bad so many manufacturers are cheating now - it's a bit unfair considering the hard work conscientious manufacturers/dealers put in to try and follow the rules, even when we don't agree with some of them. :(

In the past two months: My Glasses have offended people, Me Drinking water has offended people, and now; My alerting the public of the shady practices of TIDRADIO STEALING PASSWORDS, Faking FCC ID's, and LYING to everyone is offending.
Yet if I didn't release the video series, I would be the bad guy and conspiring with TIDRADIO for withholding information which the public now has access to reference.
How would the consumer feel if I knew about all this and didn't make it known?

Honestly if you truly cared, this video could have been sent to them 6 months ago as well as to Amazon as proof to have the radio pulled then.

I got a two-pack for $80. I will say that the app is junk. Could I use it in a pinch? Yes, but Chirp is so much better. So far, no other complaints although I have yet to put it through some serious testing.
Awesome. I'll be curious to hear. I agree about Chirp. If I was using this radio, I would much rather prefer to use chrip over the app.
OK, so far I’ve discovered that the stock antenna is trash - little better than a dummy load. I haven’t put it on an analyzer yet, but repeaters that are close to full quieting on other HTs are barely breaking squelch with the stock antenna. Replace it with the stock antenna from a Baofeng UV-5R and it’s MUCH better, but not GOOD. I’m going to order a better one and see if it’s useable.
On the other hand, I was able to charge the radio with a 6W solar panel - which is a nice capability to have. - de AB2M

Great vid brother. Sry you had to be the one to show us this garbage. So not to be that guy (but I'm gonna be), has anyone told the FCC that Tidradio appears to be falsifying certification records? Since the FCC is a federal agency it's likely a federal crime. Again, not to be that guy, but who knows how many other times they've done this (or plan on doing it). It's all around bad for the hobby to let this stuff happen, so the FCC should at least be informed to watch out for that company and potential future scams. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Anybody really thinking they need a 10 Watt portable, is a bit crazy.
No portable is designed properly for 10 Watt operation, lack of heat dissipation, excessive current draw, spurious emissions are probably high.
How is the receive sensitivity?

So what, FCC certification means nothing.
Most radios are operating within limits for spectral purity, harmonics and receiver selectivity and sensitivity.
They sent me the GMRS version of this radio. I've literally had the exact same issues with it. The software won't even see the com port it's on so I can't put the newest firmware on it. BTW, there is a screen protector on it. That bit of dust is under the protector. Look at the bottom right of the screen and you can see where it is starting to peel up. I had to use tweezers.
So the workaround is easy. I can message you or make a quick video if you'd like. But it's a matter of Rollin back there prolific drivers to a driver from I Think 2008
