Additionally, why use a missile or rocket to shoot it down. It is simply a balloon. Puncture it with gun fire so it doesn't blow apart. That would make it much easier to recover. It might even float. NORAD tracked the balloon before it entered our airspace, got visual on it, determined it wasn't a threat whatsoever, and then decided to observe its behavior and what the Chinese were trying to look at with it before shooting it down over the ocean. China's potential motives were a) to gather intelligence with it, which is possible but questionable since spy satellites exist and are far less likely to create a diplomatic incident, b) to test our response to it, which they got nothing from since we played them and did nothing to it (other than most likely electronic warfare/jamming to make sure it didn't transmit anything back to its owners), or c) to provoke us. • @the_omg3242
      @the_omg3242 Рік тому +20

      I'm pretty sure a deflated balloon wouldn't make much of a parachute and the trip down from 60,000 feet would give it plenty of time to deflate. As for not having ships where it was going to fall, you're probably looking at something with the mass of a car falling at near terminal velocity. And while the deflated balloon wouldn't slow it much, it still has a lot of surface area to blow it around on the way down.
      Imagine the bad PR if it hit a recovery ship and killed someone. Slim chance, but it could happen. People have been hit by engines falling off airplanes.
      Shooting it down over land carries the same risk of hitting someone or maybe it rolls down a mountain and destroys any evidence. Maybe it lands in a forest and they can't see it from the air. Maybe it starts a forest fire. The ocean is somewhat predictable.

      @Mike Studmuffin Based on the way the CCP responded, it sounded like they didn't tell the US beforehand and are only just trying to diffuse the situation after the fact. They could've said something to the effect of "Throughout this whole time, we have been in touch with the US side about this balloon's flight path and where it was headed. We told them at such and such date and time that it was headed for this or that state." But it looks like they didn't do that, unless I've missed something.
