This was incredible! Angela Gossow is a total monster and I loved every second of this song.
#girlcrushmodeactivate
If Angela activated girl crush mode... Alissa on Wacken 2016 will make you lesbian. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣She is so damn hot....😍😍😍😍
There is a bit more to that intro that you may like. Check out MatrixRocker's video of this same performance. For more #girlcrushmodeactivate, check out some Butcher Babies. (Monster's Ball or any live footage)
You want another lady who can work a crowd with a motivational song?
"Lovebites - We The United (live)" 🔥 🤘 💜 🐺
Check out some others from this show. She can stretch her voice even further. Dead Eyes See No Future or Burning Angel, Ravenous, Blood is on your hands
in regards to the clarity of her delivery of the words, keep in mind English isnt Angelas first language either so extra challenge added
In 2003 I went to a Cradle of Filth concert where Arch Enemy was the opener. I had only heard one Arch Enemy song at that point (We Will Rise) and, importantly, had never seen a picture of the band. So, when the band was doing their final sound checks on stage I assumed that the blonde woman grabbing the mic was a tech. When the band started to play I thought "That's odd that they would do that with her still up there. Where's the singer?" Then she opened her mouth and my world was never the same again. She is, without question, one of the best metal vocalists of all time.
There goes that surprise factor again! Best reactions from those.
Had a really similar experience first time I saw them. Saw her come on stage and was like "wait what??" She sang and my brain was still like "no really, what?"
Check out Jinjer Tatiana is a Lower and more brutal vocalist
@@robertpetre9378 You've come a little late to the party, friend. She already knows about Tatiana!
@@robertpetre9378 Lower maby but far from the brutality Angela got.
Angela is a legend, her vocals weren't human.
Only Alissa
@@wojtekbezportek9096Alissa isn’t fit to hold Angela’s water.
@@scottkitchingman9884 EXACTLY
Oh my this should be interesting. Angela is an absolute beast on vocals. Kudos to their new singer but Angela will always be my fav.
Alissa is great too, but Angela, oh my god. I personally think she's one of the best vocalists ever for the genre. I've met Angela and she's such an angel, I'll always miss her on tracks.
Yes same. Alissa is fantastic, not knocking her at all, but Angela is just so unique as a vocalist.
@@LizJones_redbootsphoto They're both unique and it's great. Angela has that roar and Alissa has that angry raspiness that'll tear your face off. And they've both stood before a phenonmenal band; Michael can compose.
Ya know, I like both respectively. I don`t think they should be compared cuz they are rather different....like apples and oranges. As much as I love Angela, I also like the newer songs w/Alissa like Deceiver and House of Mirrors.
my thoughts exactly
The bloopers are perfect addition. Maximise the the goofball cuteness
Angela Gossow is legendary. I remember seeing AE in a tiny venue called TJ's in Newport, South Wales when Wages of Sin was released. Maximum 200 people. Right at the front. No security. Literally 2 inches from the band. Her vocals stripped layers from my face 😁
Hourly she has stopped trying to shit on photographer's, after using their with without permission.
Had a similar experience with taake was right at the stage and if you know what hoest looks like you can imagine how i felt.
Such an amazing tour! I was there!
I was there with you
Holy shit! 😂
Nerding out Julia is adorable.
From one nerd to another, I appreciate you. Laughed a lot. This artist has changed vocalists since. We will make a metalhead out of you yet!
So glad to see someone finally finding Angela. She's terrifying in the best ways and there are too many people in the world who still think female harsh vocals begin at Tati and Courtney (great though they both are). Adding my vote to those suggesting Otep as well.
Agreed. And +1 for Otep
another for Otep
Sabina Classen is great.
Absolutely. Seeing her live in Australia in one of our tiny Brisbane venues was hands down one of my top 2 favourite gigs. She was phenomenal live.
Angela is classic but also great ones from Aghora and Human Ground.. all these in early '00. But ppl have to learn about Som with Cerebral Bore: ua-cam.com/video/gWE9YmB8reQ/v-deo.html
One of my favourite songs from Arch Enemy! I saw Arch Enemy with Angela in Stockholm, on the actual day of my birthday. I tweeted the band before the show and Angela was nice enough to scream before one of the songs: "To Nicolas from Canada: Happy F***ing Birthday!!!" I was at the show on my own (I was an exchange student in Sweden at the time) and it was one of the most incredible concert moments for me. I still have shivers thinking about it! Angela is a beast, but also an amazing human being!
I'm so sad I never got to see her live
She's absolutely amazing
this is how i feel. and i was listening to them during their prime. maybe on day we will get blessed with a angela return tour.
She’s a vocal teacher as well as the new manager for Arch Enemy, great reaction!!!
She was managing them long before stepping down from vocals.
@@RobbieFitzgerald Oh sweet, I didn’t know that. Thanks 👍
@@RobbieFitzgerald she has been managing them from day one when they weren't famous and had a male vocalist. She decided to try out singing when the founding vocalist left. She also manages other bands like Amaranthe
@@pownder Thats news to me.
@@RobbieFitzgerald what part the prior male vocalist part?
She has a warrior spirit, love the energy, love the song, incredible woman.
The chorus makes me teary and how it reminds me of the light that was brought into my depression as a teenager. Love Angela, she's the best.
Same happens to me with the chorus of Web of Lies
Casually saying "frank is the giant huntsman that lives down here" is one of the most Australian things I've ever heard lol
😆
Yeah, even if I didn't know Julia lives in Australia I would by now.
@@AntonNidhoggr
Yeah! Same here! I was pretty convinced by the way she can put r’s in words like “so”, though 😂
@GenericUser wow, someone had a really bad day. Chill out bro. Google what "humor" means.
@GenericUser And do you know the meaning of "if I didn't know".....? I suggest you pay more attention on how things are said before you are jumping at people....
Angela is a true master of her craft and really paved the way for female harsh vocalists.
I'm glad you mentioned Angela's stage presence. She is the conductor, in charge of EVERYTHING.
"Everything" LMAO.I think you are confused.Michael Amott is behind everything. He writes music and lyrics.
@@kenbean75 Sorry, I was talking stage personality.
angela is also really cool as a person, there is an older video on youtube here somewhere, in that video she explains exactly what she does to scream like that and keep her voice healthy. its a fun watch, also because you realise that its an actual human making that sound and not a three headed beast from hell. 🤘🏽
Yeah that is right
...imagine bringing her home to meet your parents..."this is Angela...she sings like a demon for a living".
"She looks like a complete bad ass. Fit and strong and..."
Correct. First time I saw Arch Enemy w/ Angela, I literally stood in front of her expecting ... no idea what I was expecting, but it was in a dark, small venue and you might expect how unbelievably BRUTAL and awesome that show was! Angela is next level! 🤘🏻
She sounds like a chorus of demons, i thought it was produced until i saw her perform live, she just sounds like an army coming at you but expresses it through one throat, its insane
Angela is literally a beast vocalist! Saw her live a handful of years ago still one of the best screamers ever! Her screams are so full and powerful while still being able to clearly understand her! Arch Enemy will always be one of my favorites!
The crowd singing the melodic guitar lines of the chorus really puts the melo in melodeath. Arch Enemy has always done it better than anyone.
Angela is the undisputed queen of death metal. She actually teaches other vocalist how to sing like that without damaging their vocal chords.
Angela is a straight up beast. Hands down one of my favorite metal vocalists... male or female. Great reaction to a great performance 🤘😎
Sorta makes me emotional seeing someone be able to hear this song for the first time 🥺 this song never gets old. I love Angela. I love this album.
She is terrifying in the best way possible. You wouldn't want to mess with her based on how she looks (on stage) or sounds. Now that she is in band management, you probably wouldn't want to mess with her.
seriously, she manages half a dozen bands. It is hella impressive.
Imagine negotiations lol.
"If I ever see that little cunt Gill again, I'm going to kick his teeth down his throat"
Something she said about a UK music journalist in like, 2010.
Both faces in the thumbnail are absolutely gold!
Hilarious!
AWESOME! I saw them live around 1995 and was blown away by her growls so, when Tatiana and Courtney came along the last few years, I was nowhere near as surprised as so many people seemed to be. There were other female extreme vocalists before Angela but I think she was the first at this level. Great post, Julia. Cheers.
God I miss Angela in Arch Enemy. I wasn't there for this performance but I saw this tour when they came to Adelaide, Australia and it was absolutely unforgettable.
With Tatiana you brought us a gorila, and now with Angela a cougar (and I loved it!!! Hilarious!! I love your sense of humor). What animal will be next? XDDD
Angela is, and always will be, the queen of metal. No one stands her equal!
Screaming yes. If you think she's the best in metal you clearly haven't heard floor jansen. Nobody can touch her
@@rickywood8805 Wouldn't you agree that these are 2 completely different vocal styles?
@@TGoKovenantYeah, they're completely different. It's like comparing apples to oranges. The only thing that they have in common is that they're both fruit.
It's the same with Angela and Floor - they have two completely different vocal styles.
Or, for a different metal example, it would be like comparing Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) to Corey Taylor (Slipknot). Not at all comparable.
Angela Gossow lured me into harsh vocals with the sheer power of her performance at this concert (No, I wasn't there - just the videos alone were enough). This concert in Tokyo looks like it was incredible and the performance was mind-boggling. She is the first female vocalist I heard doing harsh vocals so well and with this much power and it broke down all of the little barricades in my brain against this genre. She was so amazing that I had to like it, even though I thought I shouldn't. I am a total fan-girl, and I'm not even a girl. Alissa is different, but just as good, has the same dissonant effect and also sings great clean vocals with other bands.
About 12 years ago I was introduced to AE and Angela by a workmate. Opened my eyes to an entire segment of metal that I've not turned away from since. The power and synergy is just amazing.
I remember having the COMPLETE Arch Enemy discography on my phone, back in 2010. I feel old, nostalgic and... old. That was the same year I turned the knob 180° and decided to study classical guitar, sold all my gear and bought a luthier made guitar, crazy times 😯
she's a legend. life changing metal. first time i heard it when it came out, i was knocked silly.
I saw them in Camden Underworld years ago. I stood only a few feet from Angela Gossow and was captivated by her performance. She's only little as well and yet her sound so massive.
She uses dual notes so she lets the air in the back of her mouth kind of roll around so its comes from chest and head singing combined with false folds.
Damn. I'm not into that type of music but good lord, that was awesome. The ones in that crowd truly felt what it means to be alive.
Is it even a type of music or more like a ritual.
I saw them live once with Angela and was completely blown away, what a show beast she was, such stage presence, I was in the front rows with my jaw dropped , another great song is I am legend, out for blood , amazing
Love the reaction. Arch Enemy never disappoints. The music gets me very pumped and the vocals new and old are just so powerful.
Angela is the best and a legend. When she growls it's sounds like a Monster, i love it
Julia : there were no clean vocals in that song, and the melody was carried by the guitar . . .
That's pretty much the definition of Melodic Death Metal.
You're right : Angela uses false-chord growls. And she's a complete badass.
Angela now manages the band. She's been replaced as vocalist by Queen Beast Alissa White-Gluz. Alissa uses a fry scream style.
They have new music video for their song Deceiver, Deceiver. Apart from being a great song and a cool video, you get to see how totally ripped Alissa is. (Her outfit shows off her six-pack.) I don't think there's any reason to suspect that Angela was any less fit when she was the frontwoman.
I saw them live around ten years ago. The power you feel on their shows live is incredible.
You refer to the melody a lot, that's why the genre is melodic death metal :)
Suggest you have a look at ravenous as well.
Always Angela!!! Love it! Love her!
I've had pet Golden Orb Weavers...I always name them "Goldie". You're so expressive I can just imagine if we met we'd spend all night yakking and become a joke among our friends!😍
I love your initial reaction! That's how I felt when I first heard "We will rise". Priceless!
You've put the nail right on target with cougar. That's exactly what I love about her sound.
I just saw your video and my tears run down my face, i really had to cry a little bit. It was just amazing to share the reactions about this powerful music with you. I'm listening to electronic music and a little bit Hip Hop for over 30 years now, and surprising for me i discovered heavy metal for me since a few days. It's so amazing to see your reaction a little bit surprised about the hardness of the music, but later getting really fascinated and emotional. I'm surprised how this music gives me a kind of power i already know from some styles of techno music, but many styles of metal are more intense and mind blowing. My tears are dry now. Thank you so much for this great video and sorry for the bad english in some parts. I'm from germany and i just tried to explain my intense feelings while watching your face to this music.
My dude! Check out Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage! SUCH a good voice. 😩🤟
Angela was the first woman doing "extreme vocals" i ever heard ("Enemy within" back in 2001).. Absolutely floored me :)
Frank??? You have a huntsman as a pet??? Only in freaking Oz! Really great analysis. I’ve been singing professionally for over 45 years, and I’m just at the beginning of my quest to learn harsh vocals the right way. You’re helping me to understand the physiology of it. Thank you!
The other two female pioneers are Morgan Lander of Kittie, and Otep Shamaya of Otep. Otep has a brutal growl/scream that sounds like Angela's roar in the beginning.
In case you care, we now have Tatiana Shmayluk of "Jinjer", too. 🤟
AE was one of the first bands i saw live, Angela was a power house, i wish i could go back and relive that concert
Arch Enemy is such self empowerement and community vibe music, I love it especially Angela but the new singer sure brings her own considerable talents to bear really well. I would hope that you'd look at Ayreon again at some point.
Liked before I even watch it. Hell yeah! I've loved this song since I was a kid. I'm so glad I saw them live while Angela was still vocalist.
Your reaction was, as always, amazing but your facial expressions were priceless. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Angela is a fuckin LEGEND! The power in those screams is just insane energy.. it gives me the chills - in a good way that is..
What I love about this band is that the melody is not carried by the vocals but by the guitars. I love it. And Angela is such a legend.
Seen them live several times with Angela. She always grabs the crowd, and they perform so tight, so well, it's a real journey to stand in that crowd.
Angela Gossow is the definition of badass and there is nobody who even comes close to who she is
ayyyyy favorite band! would love to seemore oldies from Arch Enemy
If you're trying to figure out why Angela's vocals are so incredibly powerful, she's a false cord screamer (the mid-low frequencies you're hearing), but uses an absolutely absurd amount of compression to get the overtones you normally hear in a fry scream. Angela has a VERY powerful core, and makes full use of it. (I had Charlie Colatta listen to a bootleg recording of this song where she's wearing a crop top and he couldn't get over how ripped her abs are lol)
that's what I was thinking, it was so powerful and she looks so physically strong! just incredible as a vocalist and as a performer.
@@jvoxfox Absolutely. If you're looking for another fantastic example, check out Ravenous from this same concert.
Also, definitely give a look to Alissa White-Gluz (AE's current frontwoman) and Lauren Hart (Once Human). Alissa has some great Arch Enemy performances as well as collaborations with Delain and Kamelot. The live version of Phantom Divine (Kamelot Feat. Lauren Hart) is fantastic as well.
First time ever seeing one of your videos and the pure joy I felt through how happy you were with this made my day!!
Love this vid; I remember showing this to my mom, since Angela is from the same place as our familty. Mom said "Oh, how nice a hometown girl"...then the vocals started and she continued "No! Nooooooooooooo!". lol
Reassure your Mom that this is pretty much ideal Mom genetics. A #MomVoice like that can terrorize the worst brats into doing anything required.
This was delicious, watching your brain try to decipher what your ears were hearing. And Julia, you are NEVER useless!!! So much fun!
Metal Julia evolves.
GREAT.
Still good recommendations:
Dr. Otep Shamaya, Esquire in "Otep - My Confession Live" (speaking of intense performances ... this is a hell of one. Otep Shamaya was the inspiration for Tatiana Shmailyuk to get into growling. She thought girl was a dude when she listened to her first Otep album.)
Vicky Psarakis in "The Agonist - In Vertigo"
I fully support this comment 👍
Otep is awesome.
What I find incredibly satisfying is how these music reaction channels get led down the garden path by us, the audience - and they go from pop to rock to metal to all these delightful sub genres and get to experience the bliss that is the depth of talent and musical expression we take for granted. Metal is the modern symphony. Layers and details that can't be expressed in a radio friendly pop beat.
If she does any Otep, a neat idea would be a side by side of Royals from original to Otep's version. So. Much. Better.
Angela's a beast! Imagine if you could get just 1% of that raw energy and power she's filled with on stage, just for one day... You'd be UNSTOPPABLE
And Katy Perry thinks she can roar
Lmao I hate you 😂
Hahahahha dude best comment
Needs more likes!
Angela is so great as a vocalist! these songs with her are jewels of metal history
Angela's a legend. Great reaction!
Angela can bring a tear to a grown man’s eye with her talent, Alissa does her thing too like an absolute beast. Not to mention I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard anything more hot in my entire life 😂
TATIANA SHMAYLUK OF "JINJER", BRO 🤟
Ah, yes! You've found the gem!!! This was single-handedly the main reason I got into Arch Enemy in 2008. Tyrants of the Rising Sun was such a badass live performance. I can't think of a single bad song on that album. Everyone got to shine. Michael with Intermezzo Liberte and Snowbound, Christopher and Daniel had their own solos, and even Sharlee D'Angelo had some spotlight in the bass line in Dead Bury Their Dead. And holy hell, the twin melody at the end of Fields of Desolation!!!!! AGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had the joy of seeing them live with Angela! They are amazing!
Angela is so awesome ive never heard something like it before or after. Don't get me wrong i like many others but i adore Angela.
Angela has been and always shall be my Spirit Animal. Love the reaction. Theres a vid on UA-cam of one of her seminar's. Cheers love
My favorite artist of all time! She’s a beast
Missed this Arch Enemy, Angela was a beast in her time in the band
Angela Gossow's vocals are awesome! 😎
hugs from Brazil!
Oh wow! I've been asking for arch enemy (with Angela) on countless channels for about two years .. I kinda stopped watching reaction channels meanwhile and now I found you doing one... Going to be good. Angela was my youth's crush.
This live in Japan is one of my favorite live albums and even if you won't react to it, I really recommend to watch "we will rise + fields of desolation" the ending of the concert.
Angela Gossow terrified me as a 14yo (back in the day.. early 2000s). That’s why hearing Jinjer didn’t phase me. Instead it just pissed me off that everyone was reacting like “omg!! She’s making that sound?!?!!!!! Really???” Uggghhhhhh.
So thank you for reacting to her, Julia!
In the insane world of vocal pedagogy Julia, you are a beast and your analytical bad-assery knows no bounds. Lol, excellent reaction. I love both Angela and Alyssa. I've seen Alyssa live with the band and we mustn't forget that Angela is still very much there behind the scenes as their manager. Cheers.
Yes for Angela, was always a crush and a absolute warrior!
Otep was also a incredible vocal monster that I loved to listen too. Waaaaaaay before the UA-cam community started loving the harsh vocal female thing.
With all respect to Alissa, Angela is beast and true legend of metal. And I am not even a hard Arch enemy fan, but she is just so brutal. So fucking brutal and I always enjoy her.
You have finally shown me why I need maths in my regular life. I love these breakdowns that go into detail with biology and physics.
Gossow is my favorite female metal vocalist of all time! A huge fan since the early 2000s.
"Nemesis" seems to be AE's most popular song, but my favorite is "Bloodstained Cross." Here's a link for the MV with Angela: ua-cam.com/video/Bwi5SJG3K5M/v-deo.html
Also, the "Angela Gossow Growl Workshop": ua-cam.com/video/fCMcu18sigc/v-deo.html
Had this show on DVD back in high school. Absolutely one of the best live shows!
I love how clean her diction still is when she growls like this.
Ooh I saw this live, not this show but this tour, Arch Enemy are amazing! Was fun to see you react to this kind of music too!
Angela looks like a Female VIKING WARRIOR going into battle mode rage!!!!
Excellent Julia , truly Excellent !!!
THE LEGENDARY Angela 🤘😎🤘.
She was the one who introduced me to Arch Enemy ....
Finally ! She is absolutely mind blowing !! :D
that she is!
Me listening to music.. See this Video, Start watching and al.l of the sudden tears Start rolling and iam crying with a smile on me face.
This is the reason why I love music.
The brutality she embodies is overwhelming. I Love her.
Angelas visit at amaranthe song reminds how much i miss her voice. She is legend
I am also interested to see how she reacts to the crowd, because they are amazing
they really are :)
She will always be the best vocalist of all the female fronted metal bands when it comes to growling, no one can still top her in my humble opinion her voice is just pure raw power she's an absolute monster.
Now you know why it's called melodic death metal. And with Angela, it's the sum of awe!
When I was in highschool I fell in love with this song. This whole album was 🔥, still my favorite Arch Enemy vocalist so far
So you kept mentioning the melody, how the guitars carried the melody, how you liked the melody in the instrumentation. The way that melodies are created & returned to is the biggest thing that seperates melodic death from traditional death metal (though there is quite a bit of crossover) & Arch Enemy throughout their career have been a strong example of what melodeath "is".
Um that would be more like Dark Tranquility.
@@evacody1249 nah, Arch Enemy is quintessential melodeath. I mean Dark Tranquility is too, but Arch Enemy certainly is as well.
Oh this was an awesome reaction and analysis. I loved seeing a crush be born, hahaha. And yeah, Angela is a BEAST.
Recommendation time: Kingdom of Heaven part 3 by Epica! They released the footage last week (from their livestream in June). You will definitely NOT be disappointed by that amazing performance.
Angela is the goddess of female metal vocalists.
Angela is the GOAT of the hard metal vocal! She startet a whole wave of awesome lady metal singers!
