  • This is a segment from this morning's Locals Live Stream. To tune in tomorrow, go to plainspoken.locals.com at 6:15 AM Central Time for a time of prayer, scripture, and digesting developments in the church and the world.
Conditions continue to degrade in the Liberia Central Conference of The United Methodist Church, where Bishop Quire is refusing to allow his people to talk about separating from the UMC. In this segment, I review footage of a confrontation with the bishop outside of a church where he told those who were unhappy to just leave the denomination. It did not go well for him. I also process the ethics of angry public revolt against corrupt leadership.
If you want to review the footage for yourself, you can find it at: watch/live/?...

I worked with a pastor from Liberia. What I came to learn from him was that the Liberian people are passionate people.
When his mother died, I was asked to officiate her funeral. His family was politically connected in Liberia, and his mother was well known. The funeral was 3 hours and included letters from a governor of her home region and the President of Liberia. I was warned by the pastor not to freak out when each of her sisters and daughters would wail and sob uncontrollably until they passed out as that was part of their cultural grieving process. When it would begin, multiple men would go and surround the grieving woman and catch them when they fell and would help revive them. I'm glad he warned me, or I would have been dialing 911. As I reflected on the grieving process, this was probably a more effective way to acknowledge the grief than the hiding we sometimes do in other more stoic cultures.
This same pastor was very passionate about everything he was involved in.

The Bishop ceased to be the shepherd of the flock Christ entrusted to him.

They were showing their unwavering rejection by showing complete dis-approval of such an obvious abomination,...

"Quire" is pronounced like "choir". Quire is the original old English spelling of "choir" and referred to the part of a cathedral where the altar was and where the singers sat. Would be interesting to know how that became a surname.

I had wondered. Thanks for this. Still feels wrong, but I'll trust you. I heard an African calling him that today, so you're probably right...

It is very sad to see the impact of this on the Liberians. Their revolution was not that long ago and now their church is a source of contention.

I don` t if you will see this comment since it is past the original al showing , I do think
That God would be pleased with some show of anger. In our county in Florida. UMC churches carrying signs in the pride parade were followed by a large balloon of Jesus in Drag. The Pastor leading this Parade said people had to know that Jesus was just like them. People in the local churches were not give. a voice in goi g they were told by clergy and leadership that they were doing this. When it happened, the laity just sat quietly, After all Jesus turned over the tables of the. Money changers but believers did not voice aloud that no their savior is not just like them. We needed to stand up and still do. I have left the UMC.

The bishops were complicit in this mess the umc is in. They had their chance to reclaim the Word of God from these left leaning, sinful ideas coming into the denomination, but they chose not to.

Excellent presentation! The sad thing about American traditionalist/conservative Christians is that they are not activists in the Church, just as they, among other conservatives, are not activists in politics. They roll with the punches or raise the flag of surrender and move on to another less troublesome ground, and they will do so until there is not other option or a strong leader emerges to rally them to stand and fight on the ground they have not surrendered.

Maybe I'm thinking too much, but just wondering how many people here are angry because they know the UMC staff didn't do much to get their reps visas for this last GC on top of the decisions made

Power comes from the consent of the governed, but when that power is abused the people are right to revolt. That's why we have the 2nd amendment in this country.

Oh my. Not good. Not how either side should behave. Saying that, this is what happens when scripture gets ignored and replaced with false teachings. Sad.
Not a lot of Christian love on either side, is there? Unreal. About the "Press". notice the logo right above the word Press. Look familiar? Not press, UMC staff.
Bishop disconnected from the flock and vice versa.

There is such a thing as making an appearance of being so polite that it is actually rude to those who were hurt or offended.

ok, in the US, we are raised to be tolerant of religion and whatever of others, over there, not so much. So we don't go nuts when stuff like this happens, we generally say fine, you go your way, but that is not my way. So be it. Within the Church, it should not be that way...however, we've all seen similar situations to this in the US, not as vocal, they just went to court... Not saying that is any better or worse, just is another way of voicing extreme discontent in a not so polite manner. Folks getting fed up with it being told what is sin is not sin and the the Bible somehow got that wrong.... Leading to what else did it get wrong. Sorry, like the Liberians, not buying into it.
