I find it amazing how two guys from opposite sides of the world, from completely different backgrounds and cultures found each other through their shared passion for jazz and built a lasting friendship. Something about their friendship touched me and honestly I'd like to have delved deeper into the story. Unfortunately, the camera was struggling to handle the low light of the dimly lit bar, so we had to cut the video a bit shorter than usual. The good news is because of this frustrating situation, I recently invested in a new - much better - camera with a few decent lenses, meaning can tackle all manner of dimly lit rooms in future.
@Giannirey jazz exists outside of just music and art. Jazz is a movement of errant individualism, of not just subverting traditional conventions but it taking them and reshaping them into something that’s entirely new and your own. You don’t have to be a musician to do that. The creative and errant individual = one who lives the jazz style of life.
"You don't have to be an expert on something to enjoy it". Followed by Ryotaro giving Chris shit for consuming Japanese culture and not "respecting" it! lol.
Ronan he's not asking Chris to be an "expert" in Japan he just made fun of Chris living in Japan for so long and still doing some things like a foreigner. That's the most respectful and light way of "giving shit" to someone. They are just a love-hate friendship you know
Japanese Jazz bars are pretty high quality. Here's two of my recommendations that are based in Tokyo. Samurai Jazz bar in Shinjuku, and The Root down in Kanda.
The way this man talks about jazz fans not having the spirit of jazz, I feel like that sums up most jazz fans in the UK perfectly. It's seen as the preserve of middle aged middle class white men in cardigans who would probably be terrified if they bumped into the musicians outside of the club! Jazz is about poverty, it's about longing, it's about something you can't sell or put into words. It's not about owning the most Miles Davis albums or having the cash to go to Ronnie Scott's every weekend. Viva la jazz!
Just binged watched a large portion of your videos last night, and it really is amazing to see how the videos improve in quality, show off the area and activities more, and still have a relatable personality leading it. Fantastic channel and video! I decided a couple months ago that I would learn Japanese with the goal of visiting for the 2020 Olympics, and your guides have definitely set me on a good path. Thanks for it man!
Ive been fascinated with Japanese culture for a while now, so glad i came across this channel. Love this video. My fascination with this country and with my love of Jazz music combined together. And to hear John Coltrane playing in the backround while the club owner is talking. Great stuff.
How I *wish* that people in the West knew at least ONE more Japanese male celebrity/actor other than that old and ancient Watanabe guy... And no, Natsuki doesn't count, not yet...!
I love this channel because it covers parts of Japan and Japanese culture that aren't just pretty vlogs and cityscapes of Tokyo. The content you make is truly unique and always well put together Chris. Please don't stop anytime soon!
To be fair to you though, heroin abuse and all night drinking in dark rooms isn't a healthy way to live. So many jazz musicians were drug addicts, it's not a way of life you would wish on your children.
I subbed to this channel when I was considering travelling to Japan. It never happened and I don't really care about anything in these videos now.. yet it is always entertaining just the same. Thank You.
I love these types of vids. Like people know traditional japan and its culture in a broad sense but they disregard the local micro sub cultures like the jazz. skateboard. hiphop. coffee culture. this was dope
Hey Chris. I really loved this episode. Thanks for keeping me inspired to learn the language and eventually live there. Thanks to you, I switched my living city interests from Osaka to Sendai. Looking forward to your next episode, as always! Love from Orlando, Florida.
"If something is mysterious because you can't comprehend it, that's ok." This is so true, especially in regards to jazz. Jazz is amazingly technically complex, both in terms of the harmony and the technicality of the performance, but the only way, really, to understand what the composer, and musicians, are communicating through it you really only have to hear it, allow yourself to feel what you feel while listening.
Chris, I've noticed there seems to be alcohol served almost everywhere you go in most of your videos, even in places I wouldn't normally expect to see it being served. Is that just a thing in Japan or do you just tend to frequent places that sell alcoholic drinks?
the new structure of adding a preview or “upcoming ” before the video is interesting. I liked it when it was one clip at the start of the video showing a point later on because it felt less commercial I really love everything about the editing otherwise
Abroad in Japan is my new favorite UA-cam channel to put on while I'm making art and just listen and laugh for hours. Never mind others horrible comments, you keep being awesome xoxo from acadiana Louisiana, Cajun crawfish country
I guess this video was monetized because a 5 second image of Adam Levine showed up. Boy I just love ads. Im glad you got 1/100th of a penny before the video got demonized.
Brickinasock Was thinking the same thing about the smoking which is completely banned indoors for many years now in Canada. Japan seems to be an anomaly in that regard.
Brickinasock I would love to visit Japan any day but the biggest problem is the smoke. I hate smoke. It's not good for anyone, especially someone like me who has asthma. Luckily it's not as bad.
Hey, I just want to say that I've been really enjoying the recent uploads. As someone who just moved to Japan, your videos are great for figuring out where to spend my next break. Keep up the good work!
"Don't call it fermented, it's matured!"
Lost it there
Ryotaro desperately trying to fancy up natto
Smells like an old tramp's socks...

Which camera did you get?
GH5 + 18-35mm Sigma ART Lens
Filmed a few videos on it already and I'm bloody excited about the possibilities!
Damn, that's a nice lens. Sigma Art ones are crazy.
Honey Goat I would like to know as well
good job chris, we love ya
Consuming, but not respecting culture......... the most priceless comment ...... love u both xx
You put it into your stomach, but not into your heart.

"There are people who don't know what Jazz is and living the Jazz way of life"
This guy is SO COOL
I was not expecting to see verlisify here
@Giannirey S This whole time you were a poet and you didn't even know it!
@Giannirey jazz exists outside of just music and art. I think he means that the jazz way of life is to respond to the world around you (and what life throws at you) with inspired improvisation.
@@thekeywitness I don't think that's what he means at all. I don't even have the slightest clue as to where you derived that from.
Damnn next time Im in Japan I'll check out some more jazzy scene clubs. Looks amazing!
I was like did Natsuki dye his hair.
He looks so *FUCKING* cool
Patrick Star Is this the Krusty Krab
Reaper NO! This is Patrick~
Jazz and Japan make me want to rewatch cowboy bebop
I swear the place looked like the one where Spike sat in the corner drinking his scotch
See You Soon Space Cowboy
Bro, the Japanese love Jazz and even Rock. They say rocks not dead, it's just living in Japan.
Kids on the slope, another great anime with a lot, a lot of jazz
damn I feel like I have to be in the mood to watch CB
'Often a person who is living the jazz way of life is a person that exists in a place where no jazz can be heard'. Beautiful
Had to pass some years to understand
"You don't have to be an expert on something to enjoy it".
Followed by Ryotaro giving Chris shit for consuming Japanese culture and not "respecting" it! lol.
You know that makes no sense right? There is a difference between enjoying and respecting.
Ronan he's not asking Chris to be an "expert" in Japan he just made fun of Chris living in Japan for so long and still doing some things like a foreigner. That's the most respectful and light way of "giving shit" to someone. They are just a love-hate friendship you know
2:19 this man is so charismatic even tho he’s just smiling and lightly nodding I already like him
@J Hemphill I disagree having that kind of charisma like that man had surpass race only certain people have that kind of charismatic pull
Fake. Natsuki is clearly the coolest guy in Japan.
This just in: Fake News has reached Japan.
Ryotarou has dethroned him.
Natsuki is definitely more stylish, but this guy is definitely smoother. Different kinds of cool.
There is 3 diffent cools this guy is cool the main cool, natsuki is like funny best friend cool and ryotarou is fancy classy cool formal
Unless Bill Murray is there
I'd love to check out that bar. Japanese jazz bars are always way cooler than the ones we have in England.
Japanese Jazz bars are pretty high quality. Here's two of my recommendations that are based in Tokyo.
Samurai Jazz bar in Shinjuku, and The Root down in Kanda.
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out for sure!
Kantan Japan Australian bars are lazy and lacking style compared to bars in Japan
From the looks of it, it's better than any remaining jazz bars in my area of America.
The way this man talks about jazz fans not having the spirit of jazz, I feel like that sums up most jazz fans in the UK perfectly.

Greetings from 2022.

Goddamn comedic exaggerated roll and Wilhelm scream at the end. This is the awesome content I signed up UA-cam for.
Kyros totally
Sugawara and Sakamoto ... definitely two of the coolest people on the planet ... they both understand what it is to be "Jazz" ... Respect.
OLO 59 ryuichi sakamoto?
+Ochu Zeith ... Yes, Ryuichi Sakamoto ... the Man is a Demi God as far as I know!
true that, and don't forget Haruomi Hosono!
Hosono is miles better imo
I know Sakamoto from Taeko Ohnuki's early albums...very good stuff.
Coolness and jazzness
Ur music sucks
Nice going on this one! One of your best Chris!
Chris you consistently keep making better and better videos. This is now one of my favourite videos. Thanks!
Love, love, love that Shoji knew Basie personally. Beautiful. Love your vids!

That 7:48 minutes went by fast.. this was a very interesting video.
You missed 0:01 that why
Legend has it, Chris is still rolling to this day.

I like how everyone got their notifications, and then there's me, who just checks subscriptions every other minute waiting for new vids.
I know right, I just happened to be on the main page of YT and saw it on the top. No need of notifications for me :)
Love the way he spoke about jazz and the bgm made it feel like your actually there and listening
Who noticed the wilhelm scream
this man is the most inspiring man I've ever heard, holy hell this is my favorite video of yours
Haven't watched the video but I assume it must be Ken Watanabe...Let's see how wrong I am.
Edit
00:40.
That didn't take long to be wrong...
I thought the same thing.
I thought hideo kojima
If Ken Watanabe played Shoji in a movie, that'd be the next level.

Loved the outro xD As always, great content and loved the Jazz bar feature. Looking forward to the next one.
Lol I always wonder who is the one holding and navigating the camera at times when both Chris and Ryotaro are away from it. Mysterious 3rd person.
I always assumed it was on a tripod or something
Rainbow Life it moved at times tho. Creepy

The actor who looked like he wanted to punch you was really another failed attempt by Natsuki to take you out
this is incredible, your channel is what I look for in every other youtuber, yet i only find what im looking for here
Always loving your videos man
Great video! Man, that camera collection is TO. DIE. FOR. Leica and Rolleiflex are some of the peaks of photographic industrial design.
I really wanted to get into the Christmas spirit with Natsuki. Why can't i?
Thanks for another fascinating story about Japan, Chris. I always look forward to a new video from you.
Looks like Ryotoro has finally managed to off Chris. Channel name to become Home in Japan soon.
Amazing, thanks Chris! Much love from Serbia.

I've seen a feature on that jazz club before, but I love some of the quotes you got out of him. He's so cool!

2:49 this is so true, so many music class mates who studied jazz but there were only a few of us you could actually feel the djazz while playing
