Kanojo can mean "her" instead of "girlfriend." If he said rental girlfriend, the guy would have understood better. Also, he was trying to be polite by assuming the best.
Only in Japan, you can find this kind of arrangement. The rental girlfriend was real sweet and the big guy looks really fun to hang with. But I feel bad for him having difficulty walking long distances.
That was the best part. She gave a generic gift that she gives to all customers, and he was totally uninterested. All the while saying "I love you". I couldn't stop laughing.
Ya, I think he was "actually" picking a gf from the pictures, & had a comedic guy as a wing man, if it goes bad it'll make a good vid also to explain the unique occasion. It was really sad at the end tho 💧

I've been to Tokyo many times (by myself and with company) and this video really captures the dichotomy of the city. You are surrounded by millions of people, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues that cater to any kind of niche/interest you can imagine - the city is literally a living organism and the people are the cells keeping it alive - and yet there is a sense of loneliness you can't help but feel when wondering the streets. So many people are craving for human connection but they have to resort to making a financial transaction to do so whether that's a result of Japanese culture (pressure to conform to society, overly polite to the point of shyness) or just their lives being consumed by work. This doesn't reflect every single person in the city of course - I've encountered many friendly souls during my travels - but it's more common than you would think. Great video!
In my opinion this is terrifying. Humans are designed to live in nature and live happily with their family and partner. Japan is an advanced country but I'm starting to wonder what being advanced actually means.
The girl is playing the safest Japanese female personality. Probably if you engaged with her more she would open up. Having lived in Japan, I once went on a date with a girl who barely spoke through the whole date. I thought, shit, this is a flop, zero compatibility. Later she told my friends I treated her poorly by going on a date with her and then never contacting her again. I assumed she didn't like me. I learned later this is apparently because she thought I wanted to talk and was giving me a chance to dominate the conversation.
@@TheRedRaven_ From my experience you get both types. If a girl went to a "Omiai" or like a meeting for marriage, she would definitely play that role. The reality is that amongst themselves or when Japanese girls get to know you they a quite conversational and some are like that from the outlook. Japanese men and Japanese women both feel that have to present a character particularly to people they don't know very well. So for men, it has to be cool, kind of quiet and for women it has to be non-aggressive, kind of quiet. If a Japanese girl for example lives in Europe or America and comes back to Japan, she starts to re-acclimatize because the Western Male and Female character is so different. I am not judging one way or another but both the West and East have quite contrasting personalities.
It's pretty common for both Japanese Men and Women, being reserved and respectful of others is a big part of culture there, and being reserved and respectful leans itself to being see as shy etc, doesn't mean they actually are shy, just that it seems it, for example if she was actually shy she wouldn't rent herself out as a GF, thats a pretty bold thing to do, but since it is standard to consider others to such a high degree a lot of the shyness comes from anticipating the other persons feelings, she does not want to for example hold his hand, or say anything like "I love you" since it might be awkward or cross the other persons boundaries, but once he had demonstrated that was what he wanted she was more than happy to@@TheRedRaven_
I got this impression when I was overseas as well. The girl seemed like she didn’t like talking, but was just mega shy and didn’t go out much. They’re much more open to whatever you want to do, as long as you keep the push-pull respectful and engaging
What the fat guy was trying to explain over sushi is that the economic system in Japan makes everyone so busy that many aren't able to develop relationships, hence the market to rent people...from the outside Japan looks so happy, but the reality may be somewhat different.
@@sumonnostelga9369 Thanks Captain Obvious. Nobody would ever realize this truth without you telling us! You truly are the most helpful person that has ever existed. What a hero!
I would like to learn some fishing skills from him and could be a nice experience since it's a hobby of his. Learning about food dishes from him may be a wise move too, just let them order for you.
It’s almost like she rented herself because she was lonely and wanted to go on dates. And a geijin was very attractive as it also means a ticket out of Japan...
Yeahh.. I know she was just doing her job, but the small gift at the end was really nice. And for him to just spin around, and give it away like that? .. I dunno man. Bad taste. :/
Ayame seems so sweet and wholesome with the gift at the end and even provided a little paper carrying bag! So thoughtful! People seem to make negative assumptions about the gf/bf services in Japan, but I think it really is more so helping people with their anxiety of social situations especially interacting with the opposite gender. Takeshi really made that clear too, with that people generally just want someone to eat with when it comes to him and his type of service.
I think he really was disrespectful at the end about the gift. Nevertheless keep the negative assumptions. This service does more harm than good for both the buyer and the gf / bf.
Absolutely. It'd be a nice seinen. Let's say the MC starts renting the other two every month for laughs but they end up bonding with each other and helping each other find their true callings. At the end the traveler gets invited to the rental girlfriend and the rental fat guy's wedding. He gives a speech as the fat guy's best man that ties the whole story together.
Your point is moot! She isn't being forced, why should we have to imagine "what she has to go through." People do all sorts of different things for pay so what? Too many simps endlessly trying to say the right thing these days.
Even without the s work side of things, her oxytocin receptors are clearly burned out. Selling yourself always has a cost, and not just for the person buying.
I kinda like the concept of being able to rent someone who professionally helps you socialise. I have autism and have had a hard time with social settings and talking to ppl my whole life and i would seriously benefit from just being able to practice like this without any expectations if that makes sense
yeah just never do these things with the expectation you'll form meaningful connections with these people. it's a service and they are doing their job, you can have a great time but never rent time with someone with the expectation they'll spend time with you while they're not getting paid
@@youtubedislikebutton9316 thats what i mean, it would be good as a way for me to learn socialisation and to reduce anxiety. As a form of practice and not for making friends, thats the part of interacting with people that makes me avoid it more
can't lie man, renting a fat dude seems alot more interesting and worth the money than having a souless woman you drag around for no reason but lying to yourself
It’s not like I didn’t think Japan would have a service to rent fat people but I definitely didn’t expect you to rent someone. This was a crazy episode
It is better then her other customers who use her just for the pleasure in toilets and in dirty beds the poor girl it is even worse how other men treat her every single day and night
You should feel bad for him for being obese and unable to perform fundamental human tasks such as walking. If anything this experience was beneficial to his health in that capacity. What a strange and patently incorrect statement you've made.
Takeshi is a mood. What an absolutely adorable and fun guy. Ayame was sweet too, she had a letter and gift ready to go. Her energy was definitely more reserved but I could easily see it as her playing it safe until she warms up to the person she's on a date with. Maybe she just didn't want to risk representing herself in the wrong way? She didn't seem absent, just shy. Great video all around and I wish the best of luck in life to all 3 of you! What a weird world we live in lol
China has also this kind of "services" but in Japan it's even more crazy: there is one guy who is hired to do NOTHING. Just go with you and not even talking to you unless you ask him something. You get to pay him food, transportation, plus the money per hour and in return he just stands without doing anything and barely speaking. Maybe some people are so lonely that they just want to show they are not alone.
I wonder what kind of things Ayame writes about. It'd be funny if she was a romance writer, she must know how to write a good love story considering the fact that her job is selling a fabricated relationship.
Shes is selling her human interaction, more real than a robot, sheisreal andalive and has a soul, of course its all contrived, but in the end the presence of anotherorganic entity is what makes us feel sane.
do you think she wrote it ? they literally use yakuza aps to get fake gf's lol.... check other people "I RENTED A GF IN TOKYO" all of them give "homemade" gifts+letters xD
@@perfectmazda3538 I meant the part where she mentioned writing was a hobby. Homie had a great conversation hook there and didn't ask any more questions. I would've loved to learn what she writes about, I didn't really care about her letter being handwritten or something.
I helped fund a friend, a photojournalist, tell the story of homeless people in Tokyo. That's right, they exist. It was FASCINATING. Good to see you, Tommy. Keep the quest going.
It really sucks that there's people in here calling her soulless for knowing what is expected of her (being moderately attractive and willing to do cringey stuff for people with little to no social skills), while the fat guy and fat people in general need something other than appearance to draw people in (stay employed in the case of Takashi), it's just different expectations which makes them seem like such different types of people.
@@BoreasCastel what part of her persona told you anything about her at all? She didnt talk that much and when she talked it was only script reading. Thats why people call her soulless a dull experience vs a funny big boi
@@SuicidalCat231 That's exactly what I'm talking about, the market for people that rent her time isn't people trying to make conversation or an emotional connection it's people who want a quiet pretty girl to walk around or take pictures with, that's why she acts dull and soulless.
You're right Tommy. The rental gentleman was more like a bro hanging out. That brought good memories of a friend of mines that is on the heavy side. We would just go out and have sushi, talk about life and future while getting hammered on sake. Thanks for sharing.
Ayame was a dude dressing up like a girl trying to act like a girl. Come on look around how many other people are wearing masks and are wearing 4 layers of clothing like theyre trying to hide something lol.

Not going to lie, this felt a bit awkward. Especially with the girlfriend. I have to be honest, she somehow got relegated to the third wheel. The bromance was strong at the end lol

That was one of the MOST interesting thing I've watched in a loooooonnnnng time. You got to do more of these rent a "girlfriend/fat guy"....maybe next time rent a Japanese Dad. That'll be a riot.
Learned something from both of them about why there is rental dates/friends: rental girlfriend said it's because many Japanese are very shy in their culture. The rental friend said it's because many people work or study full time & have a part-time job too, leaving no time for eating meals with family/friends, so usually lunchtime he's hired to go to a restaurant.
In all honesty, I think it’s fantastic that they have this. As a single traveler, I’d love to be able to spend time with a Japanese person in Tokyo and just get to know someone from the country without the added stress of trying to make a friend during a short trip.
In Brazil you get free offers to show you around. Personal experiene. Of course it helps a bit when you are 6'4 blue-eyed dude there (and built). Then 150 persons wanted to "show me around" when you were getting to know strangers lmfao

Try not to dwell too much on the ethical minefield of having "rented" these two people for a day. From watching the video, I think you handled it with humour and grace, and ultimately you treated them both with respect. I think they both quickly realized that you wernt going to be their typical customer, and they seemed to quite enjoy the change of pace. Entertaining, funny and insightful. A great video dude. Safe travels.
He handed the girl's gift (that seemed to be genuine and heartfelt, not just something out of her job) out to the fat dude in front of her though. That must've been hurtful doesn't it.
@@matheuss886 it was heavily implied tha this "gift" is from her rental company.... it's just part of the act, don't be so naive lol. Tommy knew it, and obviously so did she. No she was not offended. She had left by the point he gave it to the other guy.

They both thought, 'Crazy mzungu is renting BOTH of us?' The gf was definitely disappointed she didn't get a hug or anything when her time was up! I haven't been here for a while, but this was a very entertaining episode! (BTW, 2 weeks ago moved from Arusha village where elephants came into the garden, down to TANGA which I'm loving!)
Honestly this is how I feel in all big cities. I grew up in London but have been living on islands and in Central America for many years. The world has changed since I left, but so have I. The people in big cities seem incredibly mentally unwell, everything is fake, tradition has been replaced by consumerism. Maybe I am the one who has become strange, but big cities just feel creepy. During the past couple of years I've spent some time in New York, Houston, Toronto, Mexico City, London, Madrid, Lisbon, Dubai, and they vary from one to the other but all feel similarly soulless and I feel bad for people that live there, I suppose because I'm used to small cities or the countryside now.
A few things; 1. I am a fat guy, and now I want to go to Japan to be a rented fat person. 2. At the part when he was like, "it's my birthday" I was like, "oh no! I know what he's going to ask, OMG!" But then he made it wholesome. And 3. I love how that woman basically wrote him a letter of love and gave him a strawberry and then as he's walking away he just gives it to the fat guy like a savage while she's literally watching! Lmao
@shoesinmysoup You don't need to be intimate to receive a gift from a stranger. If you gave someone a treat after spending time with them and they acted like they are happy to get the treat but then pass it to someone else, you'll be confused or at least a bit offended. We're humans with emotions.
There are many things that amazed me about Japan, but the things that really stick out: 1) Fruits are so expensive that they actually cover their grapefruits with a gel to keep them fresh. 2) Everywhere is clean. When I say clean, I mean like Disney World clean. No litter, almost no graffiti. Almost like you could eat off the cement clean. You won't believe it until you see it. 3) The trains are so quiet -- the train could be packed, but there's almost no noise. Contrast that with America. Japan is truly amazing in many ways.
you turning around and giving your 'present' to your other rented friend sent me lmaooo you take such an awkward scenario and turn it into great entertainment man
I know I'm 5 months late but UA-cam recommended this video/channel to me and I loved it. There's no chemistry but at 19:00 after saying 大好き to each other repeatedly. And she gave you some hometown strawberries + a handwritten letter. You immediately handed it over to the other guy you rented 😹
I just have to say, travel vloggers sort of make a career renting locals from what I've seen...the Japanese have just marketed what other folks hustle on the street...having traveled for over 20 years throughout Asia...I have to say I've never considered renting a girlfriend or a fat guy friend but I've rented plenty of massage services. Interesting chapter Tommy!
Your introduction to her was so adorable. Even with the mask on you could tell she had a big smile on her face. She seemed excited to meet you. It was sweet. Its like black mirror IRL. It had a creepy/weird feel to it just because its so far from American customs to rent people.. Openly like that. Buddy seemed excited to meet you too. His excitement for the claw machine was cute too. While I feel weird about the idea of renting humans,(we know the doors that can and does open with trafficking and forced labor) this was a cool video. I hope they get a good percentage if not the total cost of their time of being "rented". I hope they are treated fair by the owner of any company they may work for. Thanks for showing us the worlds different customs. Cute video. ❤
Dawg this shit ain't cute and wholesome it's awkward and dystopian, that woman was smiling because that's what she's supposed to do, if she expressed any negative emotion in any way there's a possibility she'd be out of a job and for the most part, putting myself in her shoes I'd be uncomfortable as hell and quietly smiling off the pain frankly
@@sugarsauce2435 idk man, I get she's maybe desperate and needs money but pretending to be somebody's girlfriend for money, consensual or not just feels so wrong man.

It’s almost like she rented herself because she was lonely and wanted to go on dates. And a geijin was very attractive as it also means a ticket out of Japan...

People seem to make negative assumptions about the gf/bf services in Japan, but I think it really is more so helping people with their anxiety of social situations especially interacting with the opposite gender. Takeshi really made that clear too, with that people generally just want someone to eat with when it comes to him and his type of service.
