  • Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose:
Evensong at Guildford Cathedral, 18 November 1969:
(Sung by the boys of the choir to chants by C Hubert H Parry and James Nares. The boys seldom sang Evensong on their own and no one can remember why they did so on this occasion. The practice of singing the canticles to Anglican chant is a throwback to the very earliest days of the choir, when it was still learning the various polyphonic settings that eventually entered the repertoire. In those days, four sets of chants were used, this one being known by the evocative title of “Set A”)
My soul doth | magni-fy the | Lord : and my spirit hath | rejoiced . in | God my | Saviour.
    For he | hath re- | garded : the | lowli-ness | of his | handmaiden.
For be- | hold, from | henceforth : all gener- | ations . shall | call me | blessed.
For he that is mighty hath | magni-fied | me : and | holy | is his | Name.
And his mercy is on | them that | fear him : through- | out all | gener- | ations.
He hath shewed | strength . with his | arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagi- | nation | of their | hearts.
He hath put down the | mighty . from their | seat : and hath ex- | alted . the | humble . and | meek.
He hath filled the hungry with | good | things : and the rich he | hath sent | empty . a - |way.
    He re- | membering . his | mercy : hath | holpen . his | servant | Israel,
As he promised to | our fore- | fathers : Abraham | and his | seed for | ever.
    GLORIA
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant de- | part in | peace : ac- | cording | to thy | word.
For mine eyes have | seen . thy sal- | vation : which thou hast pre- | pared be-fore the | face of . all | people.
To be a light to | lighten . the | Gentiles : and to be the | glory . of thy | people | Israel.
    GLORIA

Ethereal. The Magnificat is simply dignified and exquisite.

Thank you. This is the true bread-and-butter stuff of a cathedral choir, so if it comes across as ethereal, that is a huge compliment.

i love to hear these, they remind me of my childhood going to St Paul s in Malta every Sunday...as i recall the Magnificat was sung to a slightly different chant. now i m 70 years of age, i had taken to rereading the Bible thoroughly 2 years ago, it s nice now to understand the context of these 2 chants regarding Mary and Simeon ...
