There is some dialogue lost in translation in this beautiful short: "She's sick and in very bad pain" He's actually saying "I think it's the last time I'm going to feed her." "There's nothing I can do but sacrifice her." Actually saying "Poor her. She's always in pain." "She's a very old dog." Actually saying "We all got to die sooner or later." "But I can't give up on her." Actually saying "I need to just deal with it, say my goodbyes." "I can't say goodbye" Actually saying "Too bad." "I love that dog so much." Actually saying "That poor dog." "Mayday, are you there?" Actually "Mayday, do you hear me?" (I know, very trivial, but there was a difference) The last part he says is "Now there's no sound." roughly translated (he says with an irritated tone). Basically saying "Damn, the sound broke off." Producer or editor seemed to make Aningaaq affectionate, when in reality, he was just kind of saying that shit happens, and you have to let it go, perfectly giving advice to Stone.
+HungryLasagne Thanks for this, that's really insightful! Personally I derived a whole lot more meaning and depth from this 6 minute short than most of the actual 90 minute movie of Gravity.
There's something really amazing about this. While they speak in two completely different languages and can't understand eachother, they manage to have a reasonably normal conversation. Maybe not from either of their own perspectives, but observing them with the subtitles, they manage to carry out a dialogue and entertain eachother, breaking the borders of foreign language. Their conversation even flows reasonably well, from attempting to introduce eachother by name, explaining eachother's current life situation, and then the dialogue about dogs, leading into the shared experience of howling like a dog, which managed to entertain both people. I don't know if this seems like a big deal to anyone else, but as an aspiring polyglot/multi-linguist, who is extremely interested in other languages, cultures, and the ability to interact with fellow human brings of another culture... This video just really puts into perspective how people of all language groups can get along.. As one species. For those labelling this as an empty and pointless idea of a short film, you clearly aren't analysing it enough. Even if you don't agree with what I've said, surely it must be reasonable enough to say that it could at least be interesting to see the conversation take place from Aningaaq's perspective, just to explore the experiences of another character in the film that was never fully explained.
+Jesse Lapham (ジェシー・ラップハム) Well I know these kind of conversations from a gas station where a non native or english speaking person needs 5 minutes to explain me what sort of ciragettes he wants. Getting into a head of an astronaut going to die because of bad luck and reaching somebody who is not capable of comprehending the situation must be a funny fucking killer.... In this situation I would recommend somebody who is speaking english instead of "entertain" me...
It's been quite some time since I've seen this film, but if I recall, the point of that scene was to show the much needed human interaction between - what was revealed in this short - two very isolated people. Help from an English speaking person would have been great, but personally, if I was going to die alone in space, any form of human interaction would seem ideal.
@checkblackgoogle - The reality is of course that not all people come from an English speaking country - and the contact available comes from the closest countrie's radio waves - I think there is no choice if you are out in space - so simpel is that - and thats why this part of the film is so great.
Both of them needed to learn to let go. His suffering dog, the death of her kid, the death of her friend, her guilt, her fear, and... more importantly: the Orbital and Service modules of the Soyuz spacecraft, so she could use the soft landing rockets to get the hell out of there!
I imagined chinese man in his fiftys messing with his amateur radio equipment in old apartment catching dr. Stones singnal by accident when his dog wants food and child awakens next to him.
Now how about I make you emotional by reminiscing about an 8 year old comment you made when life was undoubtedly different than it is now? 🤔 Jokes aside, I hope all is well comment from the past! 👌
It was really wonderful how in those few minutes of conversation, they actually somehow connected, even with 2 different languages at some point they understood each other, they felt each other. Gravity is indeed a wonderful movie, i watched it because of the amazing effects i heard it had, and indeed it has some wonderful effects! But there is more than effects, there is a heart-warming story, and an oddisey out of this world (For much cliché as that must sound), i really think Sandra Bullock was perfect for the role, and this was a highlight in her career. Gravity is now on my top 10 movies.
I wish that this was just one scene in an amazing new movie coming out next summer; that would have been a wonderful gift and surprise for the whole world.

Even though it didn't quite mesh up with what was in "Gravity", I felt this short film gave a great new perspective and it was just such a sweet companion piece for the film. I enjoyed it. I also realized that in the movie "Gravity", Aningaaq laughed a few times, but he didn't seem to laugh in this short film. Like I said before, the two played together, it didn't mesh up exactly. But I get the point into what was being done here and I loved it!
I am so very glad that I found this! It is incredible! So very beautiful yet sad but still the exchange brought hope! Human to human, sometimes all we need is to be recognized and understood, at the very least someone to commiserate.
That nice feeling, I've watched Gravity too, and saw this short on someone's Like list. I was unaware it was related to Gravity so when the dialogue became clear, I got overwhelmed by the surprise. Thanks for that.
OMG , this is great when you see the old man and his life and at the same time, it seems every second space of the film, it's just a high voltage to the brain and the Imagination, and then when you watch two pictures together on different monitors, simply not possible to look at it without emotion, it's just great , . . .

Wow. I'd like to see this as a full movie. Like: Why's he up there? Why did he bring his wife and kid? What happened to the dog precisely? How did this affect him in a way? Did he ever realize he was talking to the only survivor of a serious incident? What goes through his mind in such remote corners? What goes through anyones mind? Seriously, I would watch this movie.
@ Amy: "Why's he up there ?" ---> He makes is Inuit life... "Why did he bring his wife and kid ?" ---> Maybe he lives a nomadic life... Who cares ? "What happened to the dog precisely ?" ---> Did you watch this scene ? He talks of his old female dog, that he gonna have to sacrifice her... At the end, he grabs his gun, come closer of the dogs and bows on his knees as the camera rises to the skies and you hear a shot. He gave a mercy shot to his old bitch (in the literal meaning of a dictionary). "How did this affect him in a way ?" ---> He doesn't like the thing that he'll have to do but he has to. I suppose that's what he was taught by his father... "Did he ever realize he was talking to the only survivor of a serious incident ?" ---> I don't think so. The rest of your question is pure philosophy. That make Ryan Stone isolation much stronger. She speaks to somebody that doesn't understand her but who shares unintentionnally moments of humanity

Nathaniel Korb I definitely think that it would have been interesting to show Aningaaq, but at the same time, the mystery of what was happening on the other end was part of what made it so interesting. Besides, having so little interaction or representation of other characters contributed to Ryan's isolation, and if it had been cut with segments on earth, I think it would have softened the impact of the story.
All the misunderstandings in life. Both ways. And the decisions and judgements that are based on them ... Me, I "saw" this Chinese man on a chair in a little room. Dim brownish light. Old equipment. Enter: A dog. Pushes the door open. Orange light from the hallway. The barking awakens the grandkid in the cradle right next to the chair. Poor and lonely people on the Chinese countryside.
drunkenmuse More misunderstandings ... But, ok: When I wrote "this Chinese man," I meant "this Chinese man of my imagination," because the language, when I heard it in the space capsule, sounded Chinese to me. I'm not good at Chinese, I know zilch, but of course I can see that that dude ain't sitting on a park bench in Shanghai.
Håkan Tendell Oh, I just wanted to inform about his actual nationality, nothing more. (In the unlikely case you/anyone else thought dog sleds were a common means of transportation in Shanghai)
It was so heartbreaking... yeah Aningaaq was on Earth but he and his family were out of nowhere... he also needs to sacrifice his dog... aaaagh... life!

Wait, aningaaq is somewhere in Greenland. In „gravity” we can see that in the moment when soyuz with stone flies above the greenland there is night, and in this short movie at same time it is day?!
Well no because in Gravity he calls her Mayday when she's asking for help because he can hear her saying Mayday and thinks she's saying her name. And that's just cemented here in this scene.

Maybe he's stranded as well. The short is really deceptive about it, but there's little tell tale details here and there. Maybe not, I would need to know what that machine at the beginning is to be sure but that's my theory. I wish more feature length films had scenes like this.
When I need emergence help and turn on the shortwave transceiver, a stupid Eskimo will pick up the radio necessarily, mutter something in native, and will start barking like an old dog, and then I'll just die.

This is way more interesting than most of Gravity. In the first act the cinematography is beautiful and picturesque but the movie really falls apart in the second half. Definitely a let down when compared to Cuaron's other films (Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Solo Con Tu Pareja, etc.) and the sci-fi classics (2001, Solaris, Blade Runner, etc.)
This man is an Indigenous man of the arctic, his name and his language are older than the word you are referring to, one that is meant to dehumanize. Similar in the way the term Redskins is used to dehumanize all 'Indian' people of America. It's only the current White power structure that gives power to these racial epithet.

And that I hope life has been treating you well! 👌
Bleak and moving...
Maybe he's stranded as well. The short is really deceptive about it, but there's little tell tale details here and there. Maybe not, I would need to know what that machine at the beginning is to be sure but that's my theory.
I wish more feature length films had scenes like this.
He's drilling ice cores. Most likely for climate research.
He's Indigenous to the arctic, there are tribal people that live and reside there believe it or not. I suggest the film 'The Fast Runner'
***** the fast runner? I'll check it out
Amy ok thanks a lot
A short movie to be seen after watching Gravity.
RIP Orto Ignatiussen
This was epic
When I need emergence help and turn on the shortwave transceiver, a stupid Eskimo will pick up the radio necessarily, mutter something in native, and will start barking like an old dog, and then I'll just die.
Yo stfu don't call us stupid they are more wise than if you were alive for 1000 years
@@Tay7r Hey, relax! It was just an innocent joke! Take it easy!
RIP Otto Ignatiussen :(
I guess you could say that Aningaaq couldn't understand the GRAVITY, of the radio message.
[drum & cymbal] *ba dum TSSH*
Oh man, you had me laughing for 8 years straight! I couldn't contain my laughter till now!
Haha, jokes aside, I hope life has been good to ya since then! 😌👌
Cool.
Nice
we are watching this together.
Aningaaq said: My dog is sick! feel sad for my dog.
アマチュア無線家なんだ、何も気づいてないんだとわかったときの感じがなんとも言えなかった・・・。
Supplementary to Gravity 2013
Sandra Bullock: Ryan Stone (voice)
I just watched Gravity and thought, Aningaaq is Chinese xD
Nice short story btw :)
#Aningaaq #Gravity
À regarder absolument :)
Ah, now it makes sense, I didn't know whether Dr Stone was just dreaming this whole conversation, it was kind of bizarre. Shame about the dog.
plot twist: As her oxygen went to zero & she was breathing nothing but CO2, she hallucinated the whole thing before dying in space.
05:42 Nespresso What Else?
Can someone give me the answer or am I suppose to find it on my own?
Marvel should create a scene like this for the opening scene of Avengers: Endgame where Iron Man was stuck in the spaceship.
Can anyone give me a contact to the production company? Would love to organize a screening!
最後の銃声ってなんですか?
もっとどこにでもある家庭でソファーに座りながらとか想像してました
At 5:42 I found the meaning of life
The last shot sound must have killed the dog which weakened.
auuuuuuuu...

I thought he sang to the baby for a bit in the movie
As a black man.. kinda wish they chose a different name than A-ningaaq.. especially when he enunciates it. Excellent video though.
This man is an Indigenous man of the arctic, his name and his language are older than the word you are referring to, one that is meant to dehumanize. Similar in the way the term Redskins is used to dehumanize all 'Indian' people of America. It's only the current White power structure that gives power to these racial epithet.
