_Frieren a legendary mage, won against the demon king_
Denken: "Nah, I'd win"
frieren has lost 11 times, including i think 6 to humans. Its not impossible she loses.
@@valzor2562 she'd probably loss only to geniuses and weirdo like fern and ubel, or even to someone wirbel who has binding magic
Spoiler
Denken's master did beat Frieren so badly he didn't even remember having fought her when they meet later, so...
@@mr.commonsense6645 Denken himself is a genius and the second most influencial sorcerer in the world so
@@somethingelse4282 not as much as fern and not as much as lernen who's below fern.. spoiler ahead..
Lerner could see that frieren is suppressing her mana but couldn't see through serie suppression but fern can..
I know that everyone comments on how Frieren and Fern both only use normal attack and defense magic, but I think everyone's missing out on how the two of them actually have very different styles. Sure, both of them wait a bit to assess their opponent, but Fern is the epitome of "if I hit it enough, it'll break" while Frieren is more "I only need one shot if it's the right shot."
Correction, they only use normal attacks to fight other human mages. We’ll see different stuff in the future
@@Oklahomie95yes we did
We now see that the reason for this difference is that Fern has a talent of casting spells insanely quickly, so she just can overwhelm her opponents with Zoltraaks.
machine gun vs artillery
@@Alex_Fishman zoltraak is not a weak spell, either. yes, it's basic offensive magic, but it scales. it's as strong as you can manage casting it.
people forgot that she fought the demon king, won and is still alive. What do they expect really?
Well she became a myth and only few people know of her at this point, 😅
it's foreshadowed that the fight vs demon king might not have been brute force match, frieren's main strengths are abnormally high mana, mana concealment, 100% hate towards demons, dirty tactics, "magic missile" spam and abusing the weak points of defensive barriers
for all we know she yolo death beamed demon king in the back while they were gloating or something
Hard to say I'm not sure the human mages have any knowledge at all about her except that she was in the party of heroes.
@Jinnai89 she's good at dismantling complex spells too. She was the one who helped greatly in the study of zoltraak, destroyed serie's barrier and one more future event not shown in anime
@Jinnai89 SPOILER WARNING
what about during the second stage of first class mage exam, when Frieren and Fern fought against Frieren's doppelganger? Fern got blasted against the wall by Frieren's doppleganger, and she said something along the lines of "So this is the pinnacle of magic. Incredible, Frieren-sama", which Frieren then commented on how it has been 80 years since she had to resort to that. I'd assume that Frieren used that when she fought the demon king?
I like how in this universe, the mages aren't just weak bodies who can use magic but also use their staff's as weapons and charge right in to deliver magic or physical attacks.
Well in the same episode Denken and the other dude straight up square up against some other dudes hand to hand lmao
Considering the size of those staves, they would do a lot of damage if they were used to club someone in the head. Not to mention some have blade tipped staves like Ubel and Wirbel
a lot of fantasy RPGs back in the day (and I guess until now) actually do that!!! Which makes sense, since if you have a limited pool of mana then you wouldn't really use magic as loosely as you would. + their staffs/staves are usually so big.
magic in this anime is done wonderfully.
@@MahiMahi-yu5jo Yeah the staffs are interesting in this universe as some use them and others use smaller wand like objects. It seems that in some cases as well, they are not physically with the mage until the mage calls upon them from, hell if I know, some pocket dimension maybe. It makes me wonder the role of them and if they are truly needed for a mage to execute magic or they just serve as an extension of the mage to enhance power. This is a great fantasy world here, we will be going over many theories for years to come.
If you look closely in the beginning Frieren shot 1 Zoltraak beam to the side and then 7 beams simultaneously afterwards. That's a total of 8 beams shot. Denken blocks 1 right away, and then 6 chase after him afterwards which he also blocks. So that's 7. That means the one that flanked Denken at the end after all of his attacks was one of the beams Frieren shot in the very beginning. She did the same move as the super dead angle Zoltraak shot against the Sleep/Plant Monster with Sein. That's how she was able to surprise Denken and that momentary distraction was enough for her to close the distance and hit him point blank ending the fight right there.
Frieren knew what to do from the very beginning and executed her plan to perfection. I love the attention to detail and how subtle it was. They never gave us an explanation as to how Frieren did it but it's right there if you look close enough.
Underrated comment. That was great attention to detail on the animators' part 😍
This comment 👌
Oh man, good eye! Thank you.
Others: Mages, stay at the back and use AOE skills.
Frieren: *nukes Denken in the face*
HAHAHAHAHA!
Denken: I cast THIS PUNCH
Now after the EP 25 and 26 I finally see how much she actually held back here...
I was about to say that. She was probably just learning what he could do without revealing too much of her own power. She could have ended the fight when she wanted.
Remember that she taught Fern that all she needs to use to defeat the mages of this era are basic attack and defense magic.
@@VaguelyRowlet Is important to remember that the basic attack and defense are top tier spells.
Is just is the perfect starting point to learn magic.
Its never weak both of then...hell Mastery of both of then made Fern an absolute monster.
What i am saying Zoltraak is cool as hell.
@@arqueiroXD agreed
I love how Denken went from, "I'll crush her" to "This was practically a combat lesson for a trainee."
I just watched this ep. I don't know if he ever thought he could beat her. I think he was just keeping her occupied while his partner takes out Frieren's partners.
The way she gets pushed back by her final attack makes it look even more powerful, and reminds me of Megumin.
I think she created a shockwave by blocking her own spell and that's why she knocked back.
It gives the feeling of a shotgun, and it's cool as heck
1:27 Denken: LIGHT OF SABER!!
Spells having recoil is honestly a nice touch. Shows the spell having a tangible impact in force.
Probably cast a block spell while charging at him. Spell hit, and magic boom'd.
Those who says Denken is overconfident with saying gonna defeat Frieren. It's more about magis is visualisation, he needs to be able to think he can defeat her right from start or its an absolute impossible. Also Denken always think how to defeat the mage every first time they met (this can be see future in 3rd test with Serie)
(Very slight manga spoilers)
Not to mention the fact that, if I remember correctly, it was Frieren who inspired Denken to become a mage in the first place. He is _very_ aware of just how powerful she is - she's essentially his rolemodel, even if he only knew her from the stories told about her. She's a living legend to him.
yeah, visualization is 100% the key. even half thoughts would've made victory impossible. in magic, you have to fully commit even if means you look delusional.
"Do you really think there's a mage in this world greater than Serie??"
Out pops Frieren 5 seconds later
Techincally he's still right.. Frieren is somehow not greater than Serie
She mightve broken her Barrier, but she's nowhere close to Serie. Her knowledge is unlimitedly vast. And most importantly, shes a mage of war, Her offence is gonna be brutally stronger than her defence.
as Serie stated..Frieren lacks technique for someone her age..this is due to her honing her mana restraint to fool demons..
Age. What differentiates Serie and Frieren is age.
Plus Serie is fundamentally different from Freiren.
Serie is as far beyond Frieren as Frieren was beyond Aura
Just wait until Frieren spams the "see through your clothes" magic. I'm sure that's what ultimately brought down the demon king.
Nah, it was the blow kiss
Pretty sure it was the "Make Paper Airplanes Fly Better" Spell and the "Can't Bite Your Tongue While Talking" spell combo that took out the demon king.
People in this comments section acting like Denken is surprised Frieren won. Denken KNEW who she is, but he HAS to win, he has a grave to visit. He's not about to just raise a white flag, especially not a man of his status, the royal court mage.
ISTG.
They have their minds corrupted(trained) by Shonen genre, thinking that fights are only for testament of strength and protecting the world.
I adore how Denken's first impression is just another arrogant old fool who's about to be put down, but when he gets more screentime it turns out he's wise, experienced, and _determined_ to visit that grave.
also visualisation is an important aspect of this magic system. if u could not at least visualise a success then losing is inevitable. arrogance/confidence is almost a necessity to be a powerful mage. Ubel comes to mind, if she thinks she can cut something she will, and that's why she can cut sense's hair but not average defence magic.
@@BoopaKingI definitely thought he was going to be an arrogant throwaway side character until he cast off his cloak and went in with his fists. Every time after that, when he would appear on screen, I was like, oh baby it's THE DENK!
Frieren: *The Strongest sorcerer in history*

Denken: *The Strongest sorcerer available*
Uh no that’s definitely completely wrong
@@quasalviber9496i mean, denken is the strongest sorcerer available isnt it?
@@itzjp8559 Both are really strong, obviously. But Lernen, Serie's student just seems to be stronger than Denken as he was able to noticed Frieren's instability in her mana control as well as successfully injuring her, both of which are feats Denken was incapable of accomplishing. And for the strongest mage in history, Serie is quite obviously the one, seemingly rivaling or even stronger than the demon king
They don't know you are referencing jujutsu kaisen
Frieren is like the 3rd strongest charector who is ALIVE in her verse.
Ignore the people asking for 60fps, don’t ruin the art
Fr, it should be a crime to shove animation through a frame interpolater and calling it 'improved'
wtf this was 30 fps??
I see it as just plain old disrespectful to the hours and hours of painstaking work that goes into it
@@baconofburger8784 Pretty much all cinema and anime is in 24fps. You don't notice because adding frames doesn't really add anything. On the contrary, when done poorly, as is usually done while trying to interpolate things into 60fps, it ends up looking a bit wrong. In games 60 is pretty much mandatory but that's only because of things like input lag and the aspect of interactivity itself
@@baconofburger8784This was between 12 to 24 fps as all of animation of quality.
12 fps is the lower limit that make a moovepent fluid and after 24 you dont see any major difference.
Pass the 24 mark and your animation will be so fluid it will look extremly bad and blank because it wont be able to attract your sight into what matter the most, making the anime sometimes completly unwatchable
It doesnt means you cant pass the 24 fps, but it means that 12 to 24fps is the best ratio for anime.
(Compared to video game which try to insert you YOURSELF into the world, animation try to show you a story. Hell even video game will drop artificially the framerate in cinematics by just butchering 2/3 of the transition frame)
What really make animation standing up is more about how well made it is crafted and not the actual fps
In fact one mahor technique to make a moment more impactfull is to lower the fps : with low fps your eye will stuck more in the moment with low fps, making it stand up more.
Think when you had lag in a game, but instead of ruining your fun the lag actually get on in a spectacular moment !
You can also animated thing with different fps : for exemple a character moovement could be at 24 to make it more fluid and less visible, but an attack he makes could be at 12 to show how powerfull that blow is.
Or to just give a totally different animation style like in spider verse. (The whole oscar winning moovie and its sequel are mainly in 12 fps btw)
The application and variation is fcking endless, animation got infinite potential
Dude changing well made anime into standarised 60fps anime is a sign of stupidity and ignorance
I really appreciate your channel, unlike many others you don't ruin the artwork by forcing in fake frames just to make it 60fps and you don't cut scenes up like you're having the biggest ADHD tweak of your life.
Usually they do it under the pretense that they will evade copyright claims and/or fool the algorithm, but that's a fallacy, if the algorithm wants it flags those videos and take them down, most publishers however don't give a flying fuck and don't do it unless you outright upload their whole episodes, industry as a whole has been very lenient when it comes to scenes only, so once again thank you and I wish all those other mongrels started doing the same, blocked so many channels that do this crap since they flood my recommended feed.

The Frieren Anime combat theme is titled Zoltreck. Qual must be happy that his magic is ao defining that combatants are litterly dancing to it.
finally a video that isn't edited by a kid to annoy the hell out of anyone watching it.
To be fair, now that we look back on it there is literally only 2 mages in the entire series that have used more than like 2 spells in combat, and it's Denken and Frieren, not saying he ever had a chance but he's definitely not weak
I love that during this scene the Male Exam Examiner asks a rhetorical question where he thinks he knows the answer. "Do you really think someone's power can beat the sages?" then the show answers that dumbass question by playing the hype song motif and having Frieren emerge from the flames. 10/10
Now Imagine if she had gone full out, and used the blow kiss move?
learning the basics will grant you the most power. I was surprised when they showed other types of magic I thought only the basics were there yet it shows how good Frieren is in teaching giving the basics and showing how strong it is.
I think its that most mages will become weaker trying to specialize in a magic type than if they just learned the "basics". Fern for example is the absolute best at mana concealment, that even the best mages can't track her while she's moving. That's also if they know to look for her.
@@Krab17 The basics mostly work because Frieren (and Fern) have an absolutely monstrous mana pool compared to basically every human mage. You see she uses more complex magic when fighting her clone. Regular mages are most likely better off specializing in other magic to take down an opponent as fast as possible (like Denken tries to do) rather than making every battle a mana pool battle.
the basics to everything are essential. fern is out there with tim duncan hitting bank shots from mid-range because it's nearly unblockable.
@@mikmikxxd basics and mana control are the escence of developing more mana capabilities, more control and flamme said that if you can show less mana than you have, you mostly will have the upper hand facing demons and other mages, fern has a very high control of mana, so the basics are better for her, because she need something simple to control better, if she used fancy spells she only would be wasting mana, so focusing in the basics (and the basics can kill a demon) fern and frieren does not need more fancy magic to fight, fern is too good with basics because is mostly what she trained since she was a child, that and his mana control.
When frieren fought her clone in the 2nd exam she used fancy and powerful spells because she was facing herself, an enemy with the same amount of mana, and the same battle experience, so she can not use the basics totally because she knew that she were going to fight back counter elements and the oponent have no problem using nuke spells, but as they said, the copy of frieren did not has full protection against the new version of zooltrak, that is why frieren said to fern to attack her with that attack, wich in the human magic era zooltrak was a simple and efective spell, frieren develop it to do more damage and even destroy demons, that is why the demon who was sealed figure the barriers against zooltrak need too much energy, and have some time to be deployed, but even that barrier could not stop big material attacks, because it will need more time to be deployed and more mana comsumption, that is why frieren said that she could not win against a big attack of the water girl that beat the earth guy, because they usually can not have a defense spell against those attacks.
1. Fern basically has 100/100 Sneak.
even frieren had no clue when Fern tailed her during fern's birthday. Linie only detected Fern at the last possible second but only cuz she activated a spell at Lugner.
2. She is even Faster than the last remaining great mage. she is incredibly Quick. she is FAST af
3. She has monstrous mana pool.
4. but most importantly she can hide her mana pool and make everyone understimate her which is the greatest advantage.
Conclusion: if you are up against Fern, it means you are already deadge
The way they both deflect their first attack with that mirror fast sequence was so damn cool, this is the animation style so many tried to repoduce but couldn't 🤤🥴👌
"Don't worry about Frieren. I will deal with her..."
"You sure..? You're not underestimating her?"
"Of course not! I am one of those analytical, insightful and intelligent arch types, remember?"
"That's great, Denken! So what's your plan?"
"Uh.. plan? I thought I'd just fight her normally and win with my superior magic..?"
"..."
How they portrayed Frieren when she fights could easily be perceived as the villain, so badass.
Freiren was out of anyone league as an opponent, and Denken knew that yet he fought her. Thats admirable.
He knew that the amount of mana he had comparable to her's who's an elf was little. So decided to go all out from the beginning.

serie like sit in libary for thousand year when Frieren explore the world for thousand years
Serie was already insane when Frieren was just getting her real start.
not really, she stayed put for the vast majority of it, from when she presumably parted ways with Flamma to when Himmel comes to see her. the reason she's so powerful is because she's basically been training her raw mana reserves for that 1000 years

I really like the detail that last spell Denken used was literally the spell to hit weakspots of defense magic as we are told some episodes earlier when fighting for the first time with Serie clone. It shows that despite knowing that he is gonna loose he was to the end no out of options
after this fight and frieren vs her-cloneSelf, we know frieren cutting the distance because she can not cast the zoltraak faster than fern, just imagine if fern can also cutting distance, fern would end any fight real fast
Doesn't mean Frieren can not protect herself and wait out her barrage with mana left to spare. During the fight we saw Frieren able to do that with Fern surprising her.
denken my goat
For someone second only to serie in term of raw power and probably better spell analysis than even serie she really is often underestimated
Not many in that age know her anymore. Only a couple few. Why Denken believed he would hold any candle however is questionable though since he knows who Frieren is and that Frieren fought his master 600 years ago and lost but given she fought and survived and how she was part of the "lets yolo the demon lord" group there was no way he could defeat her. And thats assuming he didnt know about Frieren facerolling Aura and Qual like its nothing (if he did its even more questionable)

It’s important for mages to believe they can win a battle. It’s not unreasonable for Denken to assume he can settles things quickly because 1. Frieren is concealing her mana and 2. the flame tornado he used was a solid strategy that was meant to exhaust Frieren’s mana by forcing her to maintain a perfect defense sphere which she explained in ep 3, would consume all of a typical mages mana in seconds because of how much mana it consumes. This coupled with the fact that Frieren was concealing her mana, it makes perfect sense that Denken would believe that his flame tornado would’ve exhausted Frieren’s mana. Not cringe.

Some monsters are highly resistant to magic and are therefore better countered by purely physical means, and having a meatshield makes it so that it's easier to keep your distance from your opponent.
Mages are weak against physical attacks, especially the defense magic they use. No matter how fast a mage can cast, a warrior will always be faster, and stronger. Compare Frieren's spells to Stark's Lightning Strike, Frieren needs a considerably long cast time, especially for spells like the blackhole while Stark is carving mountains with single strikes.
Manga spoilers:
A certain warrior completely overwhelms Stark and nearly kills Frieren, but he ultimately lets her live. Mages are great at launching powerful attacks, but are easily beat by agile, skilled warriors.
There are also greater demons that specialize in close combat, who, based on the prior info, are going to absolutely massacre any mage they encounter. Rivale the bloody god of war, who razed Stark's village, is probably unbeatable for any mage, since he was likely even stronger than Eisen.
There are also magic nullifying stones that can absorb all magic in an area. Rendering all mages useless. They haven't been a major factor in the manga, yet?
Holy fuck this is a stupid question
Do people actually enjoy this circle jerk shows? The main characters always winning so easily is so boring

@@riversidecrooks1921 this show literally take place in the timeline after frieren and her party had defeated the demon Lord. Her strength is at pinnacle of the setting, so narratively it doesn't make sense to have these human mages even come close to her in power. Normally that would be bad if this show is a coming of age battle shonen or if the show is about a journey to defeat some big bad, so the protagonists need to struggle to learn from their mistakes and become powerful enough to defeat the big bad at the end of the story. Frieren isn't like that the big bad/final boss/ demon king already defeated, this show doesn't even focused on actions/battles, it's more like slice of life/adventure that can even go for like 10 episodes without encountering a trouble.
