Cool video. So I've had the madness this past year & it's not all my fault. We got a vert ramp almost a year ago & after riding it a little I decided to put together a vert setup. Ive been an 8.5 devotee for about a decade so I thought I'd step up to 8.75 but the board that felt the best under my feet was a 9 popsicle. I got used to it pretty quickly & loved it on the vert ramp & almost immediatelymy 8.5 felt too small. Weird. When I'd ride the 9 on other stuff it felt good but a little cumbersome. I dont want to bring a quiver when I skate so i thought id go ahead & try an 8.75. Felt ok but a little small still. Back on the 9. Now im on a slightly shaped 9 & it work pretty well. Need to give it some more time but ive been looking at the exact 9 that started it all. Recently to make matters worse i put together a 10.75 Skeleton Key pig. I thought it would be fun & novel. Turns out it's a blast & I've been skating hard on it. Not just curbs & stuff. All in all through the madness I've been skating a lot more & that's Rad. Ill be 50 soon so ill take it.
Awesome Sir. There is also an upside to having a kid hobby with adult money 😂. I do have a quiver for bowl, slappy, street, downhill, and every other type of skateboard from the 60s, 70s and 80s. It is fun. But for progression I learned I need to stick with one setup in street to dial things in. Then I can switch it up. We all go through it, it is an addiction but one of the best addictions to have. Stay Rad Sir and thank you for checking out the channel.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding all great points. Plus this way we get to support the shops & companies we are into. I love the narrative of your channel. Feels like skating with friends when we were kids... & we're still doing it. Keep on truckin'!
Appreciate you checking out the video and your feedback here as well. The Winkowski has some sick color ways so you should be set for a hot minute. Stay Rad Sir
Sticking to the same style/brand of board is a big thing but it is nice to try something new from time to time. I try and stick to the same few brands for the most part. Loved the noseslide to heelflip line you got. It looked so good. I also think this is the first time I have seen you do the fakie heel. I'm sure you have put it out in a video before now I must of just missed it.
It is the first time I stuck to one shape. It really helped me. Fakie heel is a weird one for me. Sometimes I have it and sometimes I absolutely don't. The best one is in the double chocolate video from 2 years ago. It was up a big bank. Skating some other boards now. Always getting into something. Stay Rad Sir.
Nice video, although for myself I found that i get too comfortable after a while on the same setup and start being too dependent on tricks feeling the same. I now have two setups and alternate between them in my sessions, always making sure I can do all my tricks on both. Any 8 inch deck with venture lo's, their default bushings on tight and 52mm dragon wheels and a 10inch erick winkowski with indy 159 on loose with 56mm ricta coulds and riser pads. When I can do a trick on both of these then I really "know" the trick. So to each their own haha
I also mind my catches more on the winkowski deck because these boards cost 100€+ while no one likes 8inch and I get them on sale for 30 all the time lol
I definitely have different setups for different types of skating. Bowl boards, Slappy boards, Downhill board, and so on. We have to have the right tool for the job. However, for me I have learned that staying with the same street setup I had a much better period of progression. Stay Rad and thanks for checking it.
Good subject matter. Tho yes.. it took till the 18min mark to explain it(lol) I’m narrowing my setups also to 2-3(given up of non-concave reissues) Consistency and progression really does happen while on a single setup. Tho it’s fun having reissues, I’ve relegated them to nostalgic 80s mementos.
I think I found my perfect setup. However, while skating it i am also testing 2 other setups. Because I have an addiction 😂. For the reissues, I made a rule this year. I won't buy a board without a good nose for noseslides. That simple rule has kept me straight so far. However the new orange Roskopp is pretty tempting 😂.
Defenitly, i took my quicked a while when i changed from 7,75 to 8. it does sound much but when you are stick to one size it takes some times to get the feeing back. NIce video to see you again. have a nie one and enjoy. Cheeres 🍻
I think I'm the opposite, I could really do with experimenting more with different board shapes and sizes. Been riding 8" exclusively since I reluctantly moved on from 7.75" about 20 years too late 😂 Stoked to see you land that noseslide shuv out!
There is the first part of finding what you are comfortable on. The second part is the hard part, and that is sticking to it. I would recommend trying friends boards and see what you like so you don't go down the spendy rabbit hole. It's fun but spendy.
Great video - liked the talk through of the merch towards the end. Almost didn't recognize you will all the hair you're growing out. Hippie. I was all, "Did Brad Pitt take over this channel?"
you get to the age where you need to prioritize consistency because you've run out of time to try new & different shit, which only compounds when you're an adult with disposable income. i'm burning through 2 decks right now that were the last step in sorting out my preferred shape & wheelbase, and then it's back to the normal setup for good; madness hasn't gotten to me too much since i've started skating again because this era actually has setups i skate comfortably for my large frame & shoe size, unlike in the 90s when setups were really small and i couldn't even get trucks or a board in the sizes i skate now
I just started skating 6 years of Saturdays ago. We are just getting started 😂. Hopefully 🙏. You are correct though. There is a smaller window on learning Street tricks. However we can skate the bowl and hit the curbs forever. 🙏💯
Well, I only had one board when I was younger and was more of a casual skater. From 98- 04 I used that board. Picked it up again 20yrs later and got my board from my parent’s place and have used it for the last 4 months. I’ve made huge progress in that time (landed first kickflip, heelflip, pop shove-it stationary and rolling, and noseslides). It started as a 31.25 and has been worn down to a 29.5. The wheels were prob 55mm and have been worn to 48mm. It’s a 7.75. During some slappy boardslides the other day, I heard a little cracking, so it’s time to retire the board and get a new one. Found a nice one in 8”. I’m a little worried not knowing if I’m going to like it because boards nowadays are more curved and concave than boards from the 90s and 00s. But, save for breaking the board, I plan on skating it for a looong time. Any quirks I’ll just get used to
Awesome, welcome back to skating. If you like a flayer board, I highly recommend the Easy Rider shape from Real or Anti Hero. This board was modeled off that time era. (Just don't get the anti hero with the thick metallic paint, I had to push hard through the nose slides) Other option for a player board is to get a Twin Tail. They tend to be a little flatter. I really like the Chris Roberts Chocolate and the Ishod Ware Real. Thanks for sharing your story. Stay Rad.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding Thanks, I’ll check them out. It’s not that I like a flatter board, but it’s what I had and know nothing else. Who knows, maybe a different contour will step up my game! I wish more twin tail boards were made. Not many options and they’re kind of pricey it seems. I’ll def keep an eye out for sales. Not to get too into board madness, but there may be a really good board style for my “style”. Just have to find it
Almost had some boards on sale for $20. You can find element boards for 20 as well. A great place to look is Facebook marketplace. Go stand on some boards Aland see what feels good. I have what is called an addiction. I have 47 competes setup. It a problem.
i could see it helping progression maybe, but it kinda sounds a bit boring too. i have a bunch of different setups, i usually have one or two favorites, but i tend to bring them all and cycle through them. i used to mail order boards, so i'd know the length/width but that's it. you just get used to riding different setups, i think it helps you be a bit more flexible. i lost more progress to injuries over the years than changing boards. some boards are better for different things. if you don't try different stuff, how would you know what works best?
For sure you need a starting point with a proper setup you are comfortable with. Then sticking with it for a while in order to build consistency progression. Did you watch the video? I speak on it from how switching boards disrupted my personal progression and how once I stuck with on board the progression picked up. Then I skated a 8.5 to see how the progress transferred and then a crazy Alltimers board. Having the right tool for the job is also important. I have different boards for bowl, slappy, downhill, freestyle plus lots of 80s and 70s boards. Currently trying an Opera board that is similar in shape to my AIN board, but with different trucks and wheels. The whole idea was to stick with one board in the progression phase and stop chasing boards. Maybe I didn't communicate that as clearly as I would have like to. Stay Rad and thanks for checking out the video and the feedback.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding i watched it. and i don't disagree that sticking with a setup helps progression, i just don't know that it's worth it for me. variety is the spice of life, so they say. i often get secondhand completes from fb marketplace, so i get to try different gear that i might not pick out for myself otherwise. i know i don't like small/skinny wheels.
@@diplenski I respect that. I love trying new things. But definitely a cost to progress and pocketbook 😁. FB market seems smart if you live in the right area. Stay Rad Sir.
That's where I am at right now. One main setup and a few side project boards. I really need to do a video on all my completes that are ready to skate 😂.
I literally forget how to skate when I change setups. Going from surf trucks to regular trucks felt like I was trying to ride a 2x4 bolted to the ground. Damn thing just wouldn't turn. 🤪Fortunately, I only get the bug to experiment and change setups once every few years, so I'm happy with Carver C7s and going to stick with them for a while.
I have tried to like my carver CX. I like the Yow and the Waterborne so much more. I have been trying the carvers on other boards and wheels trying to find the right setup. Surfskate definitely takes some experimentation to find the right setup. There is a lot of fun trying new things but I think the progress comes from sticking to what you are comfortable on and going from there. Stay Rad D.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding The only problem I had with switching to Carver was deciding if I wanted a C7 or a CX. Without any way of being able to test them I just had to pick one and hope for the best. So far, I’m very satisfied with what I chose, but I’d still love to try out a CX.
For your standard trucks you have, I highly recommend the Waterborne adapter with the gun system. Turns any board into a great Surfskate for about $80. Hard to beat.
I like the ACE bushings better. They tend to adapt to my style of skating in both bowl and street. ACE is closer designed to an older Indy than a current Indy is, hanger and kingpin angle. Have you tried them?
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding I have not, I currently have some Thunder hollow Lights on the way, also have the 100a dura bushings coming too. I haven't skated since I was a kid, trying to get back in shape. (Age 48)
@@sideoutside awesome I started on thunders. I started at 41 with just skate fast every experience from the 80s, no tricks outside of an Ollie. Only thing about thunders is the widen the wheelbase. Good for stability but bad for nose slides. The hanger will most likely cause the wheels to hit the ledge on the way up and make locking the truck in harder. But do able. And they are great for grinds. Stay Rad and keep me updated.
That's the start of it. We have to find the one we are happy with and then we can stick to it and get the consistency and progress. What are you looking for in a shaped deck? I have tried a lot, maybe I can recommend one to you.

🙏 Appreciate you. That's what this is all about, the community. We have to keep each other Rolling.

Let’s gooo
We are trying my Friend 🙏
Love your vids bro. Good talk indeed! I commented on fb already but ya, the winkowski is my magic carpet shred lumber 👌
For sure spendy boards get treated a little differently.
Cheeres 🍻
For sure it takes time to switch it up. I am trying to be more disciplined with my board setups.
Thanks for also checking in and being Rad
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding for sure, i can wait to see more 🤙
@@elSegundoTF me too 😂🙏
I think I'm the opposite, I could really do with experimenting more with different board shapes and sizes.
Now you understand why every time you asked me if I wanted to try your board I said no 😂
😂True Dat.
Great video - liked the talk through of the merch towards the end. Almost didn't recognize you will all the hair you're growing out. Hippie. I was all, "Did Brad Pitt take over this channel?"
😂 Trying to see if I can have hair in Chapter 3. It is slow process.
So to follow this video up.... I changed my setup 😂
you get to the age where you need to prioritize consistency because you've run out of time to try new & different shit, which only compounds when you're an adult with disposable income. i'm burning through 2 decks right now that were the last step in sorting out my preferred shape & wheelbase, and then it's back to the normal setup for good; madness hasn't gotten to me too much since i've started skating again because this era actually has setups i skate comfortably for my large frame & shoe size, unlike in the 90s when setups were really small and i couldn't even get trucks or a board in the sizes i skate now
I just started skating 6 years of Saturdays ago. We are just getting started 😂. Hopefully 🙏.
You are correct though. There is a smaller window on learning Street tricks. However we can skate the bowl and hit the curbs forever. 🙏💯
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding dem big boards do make me gravitate t'wards dem kurbs more often tho i tell you hwat
Absolutely 😂
(Just don't get the anti hero with the thick metallic paint, I had to push hard through the nose slides)
Other option for a player board is to get a Twin Tail.
I keep my main set up , but i do have other set ups that i play around with. Never know when something really works well with me.
🤙🤘
🙏🛹
Is this thing on ?
It was on Sir
Can I ask why you switched to Ace over Indy's?
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding Thanks man. I'll definitely look into that!
until i find a shaped deck im happy with ill change my shit as long as i need to.
That's the start of it. We have to find the one we are happy with and then we can stick to it and get the consistency and progress.
What are you looking for in a shaped deck? I have tried a lot, maybe I can recommend one to you.
