- I flew from Edinburgh in Scotland to Bratislava in Slovakia. The aim was to see if I could visit Slovakia, stay for the weekend and watch a football match for less money than a UK train ticket. I ended up watching Spartak Tranva just outside the Slovakian capital city.

Spartak or Slovan?
In Slovakia there isn’t something like stable count of fans. Some matches get nearly sold out while other look like this. For example derby with Slovan is ussualy around 70% full capacity. National team of Slovakia plays sometimes there as well. Also next year, this stadium will be hosting u21 Euro.
Regarding the return ticket, Slovaks rarely buy return tickets so she automatically gave you one way ticket. Train tickets in Slovakia are very cheap and you don't get any discount when buying a return ticket. I live in the UK now so I know exactly why you'd prefer a return ticket haha
Oh and if you want to find crowds in Slovakia, go to the mountains lol. Most Slovaks are ''lazy'' to go to the city to sit down and watch football...they are probably hiking/skiing in the mountains :) Slovakia is about the outdoors.

I don't know how in Slovakia, but here in Czechia, return tickets were still standard like 5-10 years ago, but then private companies started occupined rails with their flexible price that is constantly changing and the biggest state owned company canceled return tickets for no reason. We mostly use regional public transrportation system tickets because classic train tickers are too expensive now, it makes no sense to buy them when you can buy some 24hour ticket valid for half of the country. Or you can buy universal one ticket valid for all companies (government had to force them to accept it) where I think there is still 5% discount for return ticket, I believe in the past it was more, maybe like 10% or something, everyone was buying return tickets 10+ years ago.

Was in Bratislava 2 weeks ago myself. Great city, as someone who loves football heritage myself I was happy I got to see the stadium. The Christmas markets were only being set up when I went but it looks great. The beers are nicely priced too and that Tesco you walked past was near my hostel. Was so so handy and I was surprised to see it too. A worthwhile trip Sam
Hey Sam, if you were to ever return to Slovakia, there's a city, where a steam train passes through a football stadium. It's quite the unique sight, which I think you'd enjoy. If memory serves me right, I think the city was called "Čierny Balog", but I'm sure you could find it if you google a bit :) Great video, really enjoyed it

Sam ..... you're a one man publicly machine for the Slovakia tourist board.......I note your flight was from Edinburgh (where I live) and by UK standards prices are modest. Don't know about the quality of the football but it's certainly preferable to forking out an arm and a leg on UK trains.

I went there to watch Scotland get humped 3-0 by Slovakia in 2018. Great trip! Got 3 pints of Calgon from a pub that looked like a huge wooden shed for a total of €2.10! Crackin place

the city symbol is indeed a wheel, Trnava is the first town with royal priviledges (1238 - right to conduct market, to execute pople, to write law books etc.). Ther is also an older alternative with a head of Christ in the middle, alpha and omega on the top third of the wheel, moon and sun in the middle part (left and right to the head of Christ) and letters "r" and "t" in the lower third. Nicknamed also as "Little Rome" due to the number of churches and monasteries. Recommended to visit.
You came all this way and you didn't pop in to say hello - and looking at where you were shooting some of this you were SO close :) Lovely to see you coming over to this fair city, it has much to offer.
It's brilliant just looking for cheap flights doesn't even have to be football related it's amazing what you can end up seeing.
Great video! If youre interested in visiting Slovakia again you should check out Košice, its the second biggest city, it's got a beautiful old town with a gothic cathedral and also a football club in the first division with a brand new stadium.
Independence of these central and eastern European nations has really hurt the football scene.. Some of these nations should merge the football leagues together to create more interest on the domestic scene
Also at international level imagine if Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia was still a thing in the past 20 years they would've won tournaments for sure
As a Hajduk fan I agree, would love awaydays in Sarajevo, Mostar Ljubljana..but most of all to play the big 2 in Belgrade again. Never have the quality of players Hajduk Dinamo Zvezda Partizan in 80s but would improve so much - One day I hope !

Ice Hockey is buy far the most popular team sport
Slovan Bratislava Ice Hockey team is much more popular than there football team.
In Ice Hockey
Slovakia have globle stars that is not really the case in football unfortunately so.

the massive stadium is full when we play something like europa conference league or sometimes in derby... in regular "boring" matches, we have just around 3-4 k fans. Also that stadium is that big, cuz our Slovakian national football team is playing there
Yes, I believe there are some FIFA and UEFA rules about a minumum capacity for matches like that.

Unfortunately in Slovakia people don't think football is worth the money, there is so much work to be done around the matchday experience, overal marketing strategy of the whole league, and obviously clubs need to do more themselves. To be fair to a few of them, you can see they are trying and you can see change.
The other thing is that Slovak people are fans of success, it has been that way for years and years.
So its really a mixture of mentality of the nation and the inability to create an interesting product.

Football should be completely private thing, no public money for it. I hate to donate these things, nobody will donate my festivals and concerts, I always pay full price, so why donate some stupid football and paying another police maneuvers that are needed around....the vast majority of people who play football or are big fans of it from people I know are very stupid, uneducated rednecks. We should support things that target to more civilised people than these apes burning seats and throwing garbage at field. Football is not a sport anymore, it has nothing to do with sport and I don't want to pay that mess from my taxes. I don't care if some player has 1 000 000 eur for ony game if it's their private bussines, not donated from public money, but a lot of football shit is donated.

Brittish fans should should come to Slovakia for football matches to fill the stadiums :D It's cheaper for them, they'll have a nice trip included and it would help Slovak football to improve. Win-win situation. Btw the trip could be even much cheaper. You can often get flights to Bratislava for like 20 euros and accomodation could cost you like 40 euros for 2 nights if you have the dedication to search for it. Thanks and come again! Perhaps try Žilina next time? Or go for the Trnava-Slovan derby

Going to Prague this weekend. By chance Sparta playing at home in a derby against Bohemians. 2 tickets £46 and that is only because it is a city derby otherwise it would be cheaper. Insane value.
But you would not get there just 2 months ago. But combination of winter months and deep crisis caused that some tickets are available for public. Otherwise it was desperately sold out for last 1,5 year lets say.
@ Oh really that’s interesting. Here in Prague now with game tonight. On Thursday went to Sparta Ice Hockey at the O2 Arena. Tickets £8. Great night. The Kolbasa was a bit spicy 🌶 though😊.

And these two together with Kuchta scored 45 goals all together. It was like watching a different team. And well ... some "fans" were not that amused anymore :D

Man, I would love to see you next year to come at Bardejov Fanfairs ( or as we slovaks call it, "Bardejovské Trhy"). I believe you would enjoy it too.
And when it comes to sports, hokey is simply far more dominant over here. If I can I would recomend trying to go at HC Košice - HC Slovan Bratislava hokey game. Its biggest derby in the country. But yeah, thats pretty much why not many people watch futball. We have a lot better hokey stadiums, players, fan bases,... than our futball stadiums, players and etc.
it's the second largest stadium in the Slovak top league, looks like they hold a lot of international matches there.

In Germany, we pay between 40 and 100 Euros for a train ticket from Stuttgart to Hamburg, which is almost the same distance as Glasgow-London. And we are complaining about our prizes...:-)
TBF if you book ahead you can get a round-trip ticket Glasgow-London for £75, or about £47 with a railcard. He's using the most expensive walk-up fares - and he's going to Brighton, which adds a bit more.

Great video just back from last weekend in Krakow and as the girlfriend explored the Christmas Market went to Cracovia on the Friday Night and Wisla on the Saturday.
Both about £10 admission and that was is in the posher seats .
