    I made this as a treat for my partner on Friday. It was so good she had me make it again on Sunday! This is absolutely brilliant, I can't believe I managed to make our favourite takeaway dish (better than most versions we've had) and it's all thanks to you guys.

    I had fallen out of love with cooking, but having watched your channel I tried a beef recipe it was so good. Since then I have binged watched most of your videos, I'm officially in love with cooking again.     Wow, something which is popular and often quite expensive at the takeaways is broken down and made simple for people to do - a dish which is affordable. Your advice about the carrots was spot on. Attempted this dish without carrots because we didn't have any and it tasted differently. Attempted this dish again with carrots and the taste was explosive. You two are inspirational and are saving me a fortune each month. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      @@ZiangsFoodWorkshop I'll be quite honest, I just make it fresh each time, I know it doesn't quite cut it. But with the paste when hit with a pestle and mortor and a bit of cooking can still create quite a few very nice dishes. I still can't get beyone the potential for poisoning :( Maybe paranoid, but i've seen first hand what it can do :(
      I also wanted to say one more thing, wow.. I'm really shocked and so happy, you remembered a comment I made from so long ago. You truely are a great channel and really do appreciated your viewers :D

    Salt and pepper chicken is my favourite and it’s a really good recipe. Tip: Bird’s original custard powder £1.39 in asda. Do not buy it online as it’s a rip off, especially amazon which charges over £5.

    I can't tell you how much I love your channel. I've wanted to know how to make so many of the dishes
    you and your wonderful mother cook on the show. I've made chicken fried rice with sweet and sour sauce,
    fried soft noodles and next I'm going to tackle the bbq ribs. With the recommended ingredients I've had amazing
    results, thank you for bringing MSG into my life! you're so right in saying, without it you can't get the same flavours.

    Oh my god! I followed this recipe recently and it was stunning. Though I couldn't find potato starch in Tesco or ASDA though. And I couldn't find MSG in any supermarket either. (I've ordered some online instead for future) The closest I got to MSG was a Knorr Savoury Seasoning / Flavour Enhancer which had MSG in it. I used that as a substitute to MSG and I used Cornflower instead of the potato starch and the results were still very similar to what you'd get from a takeaway and it was amazing. I don't have a chinese supermarket near me so unfortunately I had to use Schwartz Five Spice which I know what you mean is different. Though the chicken, veg and overall finish of the S&P chicken was amazing. Nice golden batter, great flavour and I'd say better than my local takeaway. So so impressed. I'll be trying more of your recipes! I'm on an asian food binge at the minute and this is helping me live my best life! Thanks guys! x

My partner and I have been living of Chinese takeaway food for a good month now after learning how easy it is to recreate at home and tastes better!     OK. Neither i or my wife have ever had Salt and Pepper chicken (never seen it on menus tbh) but i tried this last night....Oh my. Its smegging delicious. The kids (6 & 8) woofed it down too and i mean woofed. They got very upset when i announced there was none left! My favourite channel on UA-cam!

    Never in a thousand years would I have guessed custard powder (of any kind) was an ingredient in Salt & Pepper Chicken - or any other Chinese dish. What qualities does it possess that makes its inclusion a must?
    Great stuff guys. I've just discovered your channel and have my first iteration of your velveting chicken sitting in my fridge as I write.

      It’s used for colour as starch on its own doesn’t brown and sweetness with out sugar so it doesn’t burn in the deep fat fryer

    That is a secret squirrel revelation, batch fry a kilo or more of the battered chicken pieces and then freeze them. The dish then becomes a 5 minute wok wonder even if you deep fry a second time. Never would've thought of that, definitely a pro' Chinese takeaway trick of the trade, thanks for the mega tip. I have a dear friend who lives in Windsor, UK - I recommended your website namely your mixed satay, curry and sweetnsour gift box. Not surprised you're sold out for Xmas. Total foodie winning gift..

    One of my local takeaways has a dish called ‘smoked shredded chicken’ but instead of being the type that’s similar to chilli shredded beef, it’s more similar to salt and pepper chicken. This dish however has essence seeds added and a very sweet clear syrup.
    I’ve tried salt and pepper chicken and shredded chicken from loads of other takeaways but nothing has matched. Any ideas on what the dish could be?

    You two are my favourite channel. My wife hates take away chow mein because sometimes it's greasy. I follow your chicken chow mein and there are NEVER any left overs and ALWAYS empty plates. It's better than our local take aways can produce (German "Chinese" take aways are quite a bit different to those in the UK). Keep it up. I'm getting around to order your book.

      Monosodium glutamate. It enhances the taste of things but it gives you the munchies a couple of hours after eating a full meal.

      Sorry to hear that and thats a difficult question, with takeaway food its all really just junk food, but you can make any dish healther by using less oil, if you have a good non stick pan, then you need bearly any :)

    Been watching from a distance for a long time & love everything about your channel, also love the relationship you have with your mum its very heart warming.     Just a heads up.I know this recipe used potato starch and is a little different,however sometimes referring to the use of potato starch or cornstarch can confuse us Brits.Cornflour can be used as an alternative and like for like in most dishes .Cornstarch uses just the starchy end of the corn and cornflour uses all the kernel which provides more vitamins and minerals.Just thought I would throw it out there if you go to Tesco and are soley looking for a starch product,when cornflour can be used as an alternative.Great recipe btw

      The point in this is to show how a takeaway will actually make it, dubbing our lessens it a lot, yes you can use corn starch, but it doesn’t hold its texture as well. If you want it exactly like a Uk takeaway, use potato starch.. also we are brits?!

    Does my chinese make salt and pepper chicken wrong then?
    I’ve never had it with carrot.....it’s just chicken pieces in a deep fried coating mixed with onion, spring onion and red chilli

    This is one of my favorite Chinese takeout orders it’s like my go too to order as a young 20year old chef I just made this dish and this is incredible not tooting my own horn it taste amazing and just like the Chinese also my parents said the same thing.       Ethan Hunt we didn’t say this is crap, in fact read all the comments of people that have tried it, our channel is about what you’d actually get in a Chinese takeaway, it’s cheap and made for profit, there are plenty of channels claiming the “best version” of these dishes out there
