"The violoncello da spalla used to be played by violinists. The instrument requires a completely different bowing technique than a cello for example." Sigiswald Kuijken and Lucia Swarts talk about the role of the violoncello da spalla in Bach's music. Swarts learned to play this instrument especially for the performances of cantatas BWV 22 and 23 with the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach.
