I think the way some people respond to controversy and the strength of their fanbase is what decides if they fall off. a lot of these situations are artists who have had their fanbases falsely inflated by a label, then when they get into controversy, the label cuts that money off. The worst case I've seen was DaBaby. At the height of his "popularity", he did a show in my hometown at a venue that only holds around 250 people. A lot of artists are completely at the mercy of the label, and way less famous than the marketing makes them seem.
