These monuments are definitely a sign of a time passed. You just don’t see stuff like this anymore. Thanks so much for this.

You're right about now seeing ones like this anymore. They are all really from the Victorian era style. Their thought process with these was to make them big and extravagant so it would grab you're attention and it would make you go over and visit. They did not want to be forgotten. Cemeteries like this they all seem to be fighting for that until you just see something way bigger than all the others in the area. It was definitely a competition. Thanks for watching!

They really are beautiful. It's a style that is from the victorian era and the thinking behind it is to grab people's attention and lure them to your grave so that you'll have visitors. They did not be forgotten. The other reason why we don't see them much is because of the cost. No telling how much they would cost! Thanks for watching Nadia!

A beautiful place to spend eternity. Good video and thanks for taking us along. Beautiful location and statuary. I would assume some wealthy families who erected these monuments. Seemed to be the thing to do back in the 1800s.

You're welcome and yes the owners of these large statues and monuments were pretty well off. These are out of the victorian era. The thinking behind them is to make them big and eye catching so that people visiting the cemetery will also stop by and pay them a visit. They did not want to be forgotten so it really was like a competition. The person who had the most money and died last could really win that battle. Sometimes it really creates some beautiful cemeteries though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@RhettyforHistory I discovered on Wikipedia that Governor Coke and Dr. Wallace are buried facing each other for a reason: "Coke is buried near his 'friend through eternity,' David Richard Wallace." It makes me sad, in a way, but also inspiring to think of the friendship that these two people -- who were very important in their time -- shared while alive. And here we are, still thinking about them...

As I have found, there were a lot of Canadians that emigrated to the U.S. Two of my Uncles did that. One was in California and a member of the U.S. Navy during WWII as an Engineer. The other in Oklahoma that became a large ranch owner. Texas has a way of honoring their dead that is quite astonishing. Really enjoy your video's.

Well on the another channel called Faces of the Forgotten the man pointed out a memorial with over fifty graves for a tragedy that happened there. A circus train was hit from behind by another train and killed many people and injured some. It also burst into flames so many of the tombstones only say unknown male. There are some graves that were survivors who wanted to be buried with their friends. If you didn’t know about it you might check it out.

I didn't know his story though. I found it out later when I covered a circus clown in a cemetery in Texas. It was the video about Peter Mayhew who played Chewbacca in Star Wars. She died in the same wreck as the man in Hugo. Luckily there were not more who perished because it could have been bad.

I woner if Wallace and Coke knew each other and that is why their statues are facing each other. It's interesting to see how the designs of headstones have changed over time. Once upon a Time ..I dated a grandson during collage of one of the owners of LL Sams and Sons Church Furniture Manufacturing of Waco. I was Born in Waco and returned to graduate from Baylor U. Mr Sam and his family were so kind to me as my family were still overseas. I meet thier grandson during HS Jr/Sr yr while overseas and dated somewhat while he attended TX A&M and myself at Baylor. And while most of the class remain in contact we are still most of the class of 74 are still in contact. Which cemetery in Waco were you visiting? When my dad was the Boy Scout master during the tronado of 1954-55. His troop was tasked with cleaning up the Cemetery. With all things churnged up dad called a halt to the grusome sights his troop was to indure. Both my brothers became Eagle Scouts...Eldest is PhD of history/professor and author, and other brother (deceased) Hon District Judge NM 9th District. Man, you come so close to all my roots ... Absolutely Love Your Videos

This is so wonderful an a, Beautiful old Cemetery. There is a Wonderful Old Cemetery in FtWorth the Cemetery also has the Gentleman who Robed a Bank or Something, I forget. It is said that there is a Certain Tree in the Cemetery where it was rummered to have been where he buried the Gold. You are only supposed to see it at night. I have heard about many people that have looked for it over the years, nobody has yet to come across it. From what was told and read the rummer is to be as Old as Ft Worth, There are many Outlaws are buried there too as well as Some of Ft. Worth's Elite. There too. Seems that I've never gotten around to Visiting it. if you get a chance while down this way, Come see the Cemetery in Ft Worth an if you I can meet you there in Ft Worth where I live. As always, Thank you for Sharing this Wonderful Video.

You're absolutely right about that James. This is a style that comes out of the Victorian period and that was the goal. The thought process behind that is they knew people would eventually stop visiting graves. If they built something tall, grand or flashy it would draw visitors over. That way they would never be forgotten. So it really became a thing of who had enough money to out do the other person and who died last. There are a few people today that have this same sort of belief. One famous person I can point to is Nicholas Cage. He has created a pyramid for himself in a New Orleans cemetery. People aren't the happiest about it though. Thanks for watching.

Rherry yes you touch the basic history of that is available to oakwood if you get back down to Waco once again to get hold of me because I know where there are several fairly tiny private cemeteries that are open to the public I also know where there are some other smaller cemeteries that are fascinating walks and I'm not talking about the cemetery by the ranger Hall of Fame although that is again a fascinating Sarah cemetery although the majority of that cemetery is actually under the Texas ranger Hall of Fame it was supposed to have been moved and here oh I guess about 15-20 years ago they were going to do an expansion and they discovered that the majority of the graves had never been touched and we're still there and they had to exhume them at that point in time and I believe they were moved to oakwood but I am not positive.

He was later a Confederate General, sheriff of McClennan County, Governor of Texas, and president of Texas A and M. The state university in Alpine is named after him.

Hey Rhett, I have a idea, would you do a video in honour of some victims that occured with our military that died during the pandemic of the 1918 Spanish flu to the recent Military veterans of the present covid19 pandemic in one video of a locations or locations of your choice? It could be with medical professionals who died trying to save lives during both or just the general public who died during both. Something to open people's eyes on how serious this all is but respecting with honours who died. I think it would really be great.
I think you may even find victims from both in the same cemetery even. You may even find a cemetery with both Military and medical professionals who died and laid to rest in the same cemetery. It is my thoughts if you do so & put the Spanish flu & coronovirus in the title with Professional medical personal & Military in the title, it would pull up in the search engines fast as the key words and I would not mind spreading the video really fast through social media. Any thoughts? By the way, I will be buying that mug soon, I had been really busy so it slipped my mind but not intentionally.
