Being born and raised in Wichita Falls and knowing some about its history, which I love, I know about this robbery. The bank at the time was located on the southeast corner of 7th and Ohio where Gidgets is now. I saw it on the video at the end of this documentary. Crawford and Lewis tied their horses up at La Salle street and 7th which is just east of the bank, the street is now an alley although for historical purposes a La Salle street sign is there. After the robbery they got on horseback and crossed the tracks on the east end of 8th, then on to cross Holliday Creek at MLK and Rosewood, then onto the Charlie Thornberry area where they were caught. When they were hung, the mob hung em right there on the corner of 7th and Ohio by the back. The pole was still there in the 50's. (Ive never heard about one of the horses being shot and they rode off together on the same horse. Not saying it didnt happen, just never heard of it) Frank Hardesty who was shot on his pocket watch, drowned in Lake Wichita in 1906, just throwing that in. Captain Mcdonald died here in 1918 on Buchanan Street. Wished I knew what house. Its an historic part of town. He is buried in Quanah northwest of here about 80 miles. Thanks for posting the video, very interesting.
Thank you for including more information on Hardesty. I figured there might be an interesting story behind him as he was fairly young. I couldn't find anything on him other than a census that said he was a Saloon keeper. The information on the horse came from two different books. Each one had small chapter on the event. It's an interesting little piece of history in the town. I appreciate you watching and giving more details.

The world's smallest skyscraper has a very interesting story. The designer put in a bid and plans and got paid good. He left town on the train with his money. The contractor built it according to the specks. The thing that was overlooked by the people that were having the building built was the plans were scaled to the square inch and not the square foot.

I lived on the corner of 7th and Ohio for 3 years. They were lynched right where the Gidfets sign is located. There is the is a peice of telephone/telegraph pole next to the metal sign. I lived on the fourth floor in the apartment with 10 windows. I could not confirm, but, rumor had it that Bonnie and Clyde stayed in my apartment at one time back when it was a boarding house. They wanted that particular room so they could see all the way down 7th and Ohio. The view is really awesome from that apartment. I'm not big on the supernatural stuff, but, I had some unexplained things happen in my apartment. I once had an empty coke can fly off the counter and roll completely across my living room when I was in the bedroom. No..the a/c was off and no open windows. That's just one thing. The buyer paid for feet and got inches.
@@RhettyforHistory it was known as terrible Tuesday and at that time the fastest wind speed of any tornado on record. I live in this area all my life. Never knew this but the building your thinking was a bank was actually a hotel. The little skyscraper it was a scam that a bunch of people invested in and then the plans I think we're in inches and not feet. That's another story you need to investigate your good at this.

Wow, what a premonition! Sad that everyone around him talked him out of listening to them. And what an interesting group of related stories.
Yes it was. I'm sure his wife had a lot of guilt telling him to stay. Thank you for watching my friend!
Awesome!!!!! Great story!! Proving that cemeteries are fields of history!!
Yes they are! There is a ton of history in every cemetery. Thank you so much for watching!
enjoyed the video Rhett! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Landum! I appreciate you watching!
I’ve walked near that corner plenty of times, not from Wichita Falls, had no idea about this. Glad i saw this video! Gidget’s sandwich shop is a nice little spot to eat, I’ll be going there for other reasons now
Being from Wichita Falls and living elsewhere it is great seeing this video, Thank you!!
You're welcome and thank you for watching. I have another video from Wichita Falls too.
Something about my home town, I click 🤣
My great grandmother worked for Mr. Kemp... Great vid, nailed it 🤙

Your video 📹 is very informative for me thank you things I didn't know from Sandra
You're welcome Sandy and I appreciate you watching! Nice to hear you learning some new things too.
Great story Rhetty. Music sounds like old western theme from 50's tv.
Yes it was made with those old westerns in mind. I love those old shows and I wanted to tell stories along those lines. Thank you for watching Jeni!
Really enjoy ur videos and the history you tell. I tried to find something on the Hatfield family cemetery and couldn’t find any videos that came close to urs.
Are you looking for the Hatfield as in the famous feud family?
Yeah. I saw something about the family cemetery, so i tried finding something here on UA-cam. Didnt look to hard but couldn't find a good video. It would make a good video for you if you ever got over that way
I've heard part of the problem is that the family is really protective of their cemeteries and so it hasn't been allowed.
Well done! I lived there in the 90s and had no idea!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you learned something about your old town. I appreciate you watching!
Awesome as always - thanks!!
Thank you and I appreciate you watching!
Enjoyed that, well done, thanks.
Thank you and I appreciate you watching!
wow cool story and a grate video thanks for all the hard work .
You're welcome Mike. Thank you so much for watching!
Lawdy! Having premonitions of being killed at your place of work. Then being talked out of quitting; only to be killed in your place of work. And all these years I thought kind of stuff only happened to me.
Trust your gut feeling is the lesson from this. Thank you for watching. I'm sorry for the late response. I don't think I ever got the notification.
@@RhettyforHistory The owners of several UA-cam channels I watch have been saying my comments either haven't shown up until much later after posting, or they can see I've commented but are unable to open the comment. No idea why that is. UA-cam "algorithms" perhaps.
I'm not sure but I have seen the same problem with comments showing in the notifications but not being physically there. I'm glad that others are experiencing the same thing but I do wish they would fix that.
Wonderful, Historical Story..Great Work..Stay Safe..
Thanks for watching and I hope you stay safe too!
👍 from Wichita falls tx
World's smallest skyscraper someone came to town rip off the city something about the millimeters instead of inches or something like that really crazy story
Quite a scam that some one pulled! It's still a really cool part of the city there though. Thank you for watching!
Most excellent. Thank you.
You're welcome and thank you for watching!
Wow, thank you. I used to live there and never knew anything about that.
You're welcome! I'm glad you learned something new about that city. I'll have a couple more videos that may be the same for you. Thank you for watching Jerry!
That's my hometown! Thank you for the story!
You're welcome! I'm glad I could share a little of your hometown history! Thank you for watching!
@@RhettyforHistory Yeah. I grew up there, still have family there, visit there occasionally but never heard of that story. Lol
Cool to see a video about my hometown!

Great coverage of an historical event.
Thank you Brian. I appreciate you watching.
I Just Love Your Stories Mister Rhetty !!!
Thank you Nurse! I'm glad you enjoy them and I appreciate you watching!
This was a shock to see on my feed! I drive by that cemetery everyday for work 🤣 this town has soooo many other strange stories you should cover!
I would love to know more. What others should I do?
@@RhettyforHistory *Dr. Phil was originally practicing here
*Mia Hamm (Soccer Player) was from here
*Bowling for Soup and Pantera are from here
*The world's smallest sky scraper
* One of the presidents(can't remember which) was at the opening of the Falls
*Lee Harvey Oswald's brother lives/lived here
*Elvis played here when he was just starting in '56. 200 people showed up and didn't like rock and roll so he started playing country Gospel
* Lloyd Ruby (race car driver) was from here, we have an overpass named after him
*Lake Wichita is the first manmade lake in Texas. And used to have a big wharf that burned down I believe
*We're the first Texas City to have natural gas
*First City West of the Mississippi to have a motorized firetruck
*We have the WWE hall of fame
*Hotter n hell 100, 2nd largest bike race to the Tour De France
*In 1945 there was 46,650 airmen being trained at Sheppard which was the largest amount of training.
There's certainly more. Only ones I can remember off hand.
I very briefly grabbed the smallest skyscraper at the end of this video but did not know the history of it then like I do now. Stayed tuned on Ruby. That is coming soon. I knew about the wrestling but all the rest I did not. Sounds like I need to make a trip back! We visited a cereal bar and arcade while we were there and I'm sad that it has closed for good because of the current events. We had a blast there. Maniac Mansion was the name.
Bonnie and clyde had a hide out house here in Wichita falls, I can take you to the house that still stands today, the owner can fill in more of the story of the hideout and he has photos of them at the same house years ago
I live at in Wichita Falls and did not know the exact details of this robbery real cool
I'm glad you learned something about your hometown. Thank you for watching!
There were many more. I really enjoyed the story! Keep it up! I love the history of interesting places!
My friend, Leon, showed me the grave several years ago and told me the story. That cemetery is full of cool stories. By the way, at 13:08 in the video, you can see the littlest skyscraper behind Gidget's. Another interesting story.
Yes there are a lot of interesting burials in the cemetery. I will have one more that tells about a little more there. I loved that little skyscraper. Thank you so much for watching
I am from Wichita falls. I live in a small town near there. The littlest skyscraper was the product of a scam. The plans were put into inches instead of feet. There is actually videos about it.
Wow that is a scam then. I could see how that would be easily mistaken. Thank you for watching!
Very interesting, I’ve been in the lilskyscraper , nice people work there. Interesting history there also
nice community, friendly folks in Witchita Falls
Yes there are. Thank you for watching!
Great video, thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. Thank you for watching!
Very interesting. Always find your videos super interesting.
Thank you my friend. I appreciate you watching!
I'm from WF....as kids we were taught the history of our city....the littlest skyscraper was a money scam in the old days...the blueprint was created in inches not feet
I do like that it was passed on and taught to everyone there. Thank you so much for watching!
Informative as always, enjoyed it very much. You would think after the first gun shot you had in background that a person would get used to it, well I jumped at everyone. Thanks Rhetty ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
Sorry to make you jump! Thank for watching Jodie and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
a really informative and well done video, great.
Thank you Courtney! I appreciate you watching!
Love the video, always curious of are history here.

There was a tv show Country Reporter that had a story on the bldg. Very interesting.
That's interesting. I have never heard of the show. Maybe I can still find it. Thank you so much for watching.
The littlest skyscraper is an interesting story. The contractor who built it used inches scale instead of feet. He was a scammer!
That's quite a scam! I'm surprised they didn't come after the developer. Thank you so much for watching!
News to me, excellent video quality , great story
Thank you for watching Jim!
The building behind the 7th and Ohio 4 story building is the Bullington Northern Rail Office located adjacent to the tracks on the west side. 516 7th st. The upper floors are basically untouched over the decades
Very interesting. That would be neat to walk thru there! Thanks for watching!
The last grave you showed the one who was shot in the back what happened? Great video.
I don't know the story on that one. I stumbled across that grave but did not research it any further. Thank you for watching!
I live fairly close to Wichita and found it amazing that this would pop up on my recommended. I guess it’s location based because so many residents are commenting here. I had no idea that this event happened and I’m glad you made this video. Also, where did you source all this information?
That's interesting how you found it and you're right there have been quite a few people that have found it and are from Wichita Falls. If you google the subject matter you'll fun into several different sources. There are some books and magazine articles.
I'm from Wichita Falls and never have heard of this
Sometimes it's interesting to learn about the history that is around us! Thank you for watching!
Wichita falls is on the top ten haunted towns list ☺
I did not know that. Thank you for watching!
I often drive from Ft. Worth Texas to Amarillo Texas, passing by Wichita Falls and I never would've known that little town had such a great story.
Do you know about the shootout at the white elephant saloon in Ft. Worth Texas? They have a reenactment of it every year.
Yes I do. I have covered it in my top gunfights of the old west but I am planning to do a little but more on it some time this year. Thank you for watching.
I'm from vernon about 45 minutes away and the littlest Skyscraper from what I knew growing up was a pretty big scam in Wichita Falls history
You're right about that. I have learned about it since. The plans had inches rather than feet.
@@RhettyforHistory yes exactly!! Wichita falls and vernon (use to be eagle flats) are rich in history
Have any other stories I should know about? I'm not from the area but I'm always looking for something new to cover?
@@RhettyforHistory let me do some digging and I will get back with you
Thank you! I'm definitely looking for Old West or anything odd and different.
Great video!

oh what a great story....sky scrapper was cute...have a good night
Thank you Jody! I was fascinated by that little skyscraper.
Very well told and a cool video with two bonus storys love the the World's smallest sky scrapper you should tour it if they would let you make a video .
Thank you Rickashay. If I ever go back and they are open I will. Fascinating little building. I appreciate you watching.

Hopefully they make the story a little more enjoyable and personal. Thank you for watching.
Good story. Thank you.
Thank you Keny! I appreciate you watching!
I live in Wichita falls and didn't know this!
I'm glad you learned something about your city. Thank you for watching!
I've lived in Wichita Falls for almost 30 years and never hesrd of this. This may be the most important story i've ever heard other than the 1978 or79 tornado.World's smallest skyscraper was a ruse based on using inches for the measurements instead of feet and was actually sold to someone who never notice the discrepancy between ( ' ) and ( "" ).. The buyer paid for feet and got inches.
I'm not from Wichita Falls but I need to look up that Tornado I guess. Might be something interesting. Thank you for watching.
@@RhettyforHistory it was known as terrible Tuesday and at that time the fastest wind speed of any tornado on record. It stayed on the ground for some time leaving Wichita Falls and going all the way to Vernon or the other way around. I think over 60 people died. Anyone living here at the time could tell you exactly. When we moved here in 92 every house we looked was identified if the neighborhood was there before or after the tornado.
Always love the true western stories.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching Paul!
I live in this area all my life. Never knew this but the building your thinking was a bank was actually a hotel. The little skyscraper it was a scam that a bunch of people invested in and then the plans I think we're in inches and not feet. That's another story you need to investigate your good at this.
I enjoyed the input from the horse.
Thanks for watching!
After starting the project The contractor hired to build the small skyscraper got mad and instead of building it like the blue prints said.he used inches instead footage.
That is quite the story isn't it? Thank you for watching!
The tiny skyscraper gave measurements in inches and the buyer didn't notice and paid the price site unseen by feet.
That's such a crazy story! Thank you for watching!
