It's spooky how Euronymous and Dead are forever stuck in their youthful states, untouched by time. They will never grow old. And then you realise that this all happened such a long time ago and that they would be around 60 if they were alive today.

THE STORY OF DEAD - PART 4
Word spreads quickly about the spectacular show in Jessheim, where Pelle, on top of spraying blood on the audience, also threw severed pig heads at them. When Metalion organizes a fundraiser for Slayer Mag in Sarpsborg, near the Swedish border, Mayhem is the main attraction along with other bands like Cadaver and Equinox.

-It was at a venue called Furuheim, says Metalion. People brought plastic bags with alcohol, but we were the doormen, so you could get in just by giving us some. There were no fights, it all went well. Mayhem had almost no light on stage so it was very dark in the building when they played, it was very special.

Eager to push the boundaries of what is possible on stage, Pelle writes to Morgan Håkansson and makes plans for a concert together with Grotesque in Norrköping. He asks to come a few days before the gig, to hang rotten meat from the walls and ceiling, in order for it to have time to start smelling.

-I even purchased a meat saw for Dead, which he wanted to use to cut himself on stage, says Morgan. But it all got too complicated and the gig never happened.

Morgan corresponds intensely both with Pelle and Øystein and finds out that there is tension brewing within Mayhem. The band has been looking for a place where they can both live and rehearse for a long time, and finally finds a large house in Kråkstad, Ski Municipality. Jørn says that he was shocked upon seeing how tidy and nice the house was. Some parts of the rooms have wood carved in the old Norwegian style, in the basement there is a fully equipped gym and many rooms for the band members to live in. The house is around 200 square meters and is owned by the parents of one of Øystein’s former classmates.

Despite the fact that the band now has a place to rehearse, the deteriorating relationship between Pelle and Øystein, which in the beginning was due to creative differences, deteriorates even further. They get on each other’s nerves and can not agree on anything. Øystein makes fun of Pelle and tests his patience. And Pelle notices that Øystein’s talk about Mayhem making a record and heading out on tour, is not true. Jørn, who has known Øystein since childhood, knows that it is mostly just empty words.

-He fantasized loudly all the time and Pelle believed it. Those plans were just insane. For example, Øystein thought that we should establish a Deathlike Silence Productions office in Moscow and use it as a cover for selling computers to the authorities and make lots of money. He even almost had me convinced. There were many big plans of that sort.

At last, they are finally able to go through with one of the plans. In November 1990, Mayhem embarks on a tour of Europe, with concerts planned in Germany, Greece, Turkey and The Netherlands. They travel by train, with interrail cards. First they play three gigs in Germany, in Zeits, Leipzig and Karl-Marx Stadt (present day Chemnitz). The band then takes the train back to Norway again to recieve their social welfare checks, before heading to Turkey to play a concert in Izmir. Jørn remembers that Pelle had nosebleeds for much of the journey, because of severe malnourishment.

Once in Turkey, nothing goes as planned. The power is cut several times during the concert and the band has to bribe the organizers of the event to get it turned back on. When they finally finish the gig they are not payed the money they were promised.

-The equipment was crap and the people there were just hopeless, says Jan Axel. They did not have a place for us to stay. We got into trouble with the customs officers. On top of all, Pelle’s wallet was stolen on the train. I have never been so exhausted in my entire life.

The concert in Ankara is cancelled due to the nearby gulf war. Back in Norway Pelle misunderstood a letter and thought that the concert in Greece had also been cancelled, so the band travels straight to The Netherlands. But the event organizer, Bacchus from the Dutch band Asphyx, is not home because Mayhem arrives three days too early. So they abandon the tour of Europe and go back home to Norway.

Once they are home, it becomes clear once again that there is not much happening with Mayhem. Øystein puts more and more of his time into building his record company and he plans to open a record store in Oslo. Jørn’s girlfriend is pregnant and he spends more time with her than with the band, which drives Øystein to threaten to kill her. Jan Axel has distanced himself from the band and has been forced to sell the PA system that Pelle uses to sing, because he is broke.

-Pelle was trapped in the house, says Jørn. The rest of us had families we could go home to, have dinner with, and be gone for a few days. We had friends. Pelle did not. There was not a world outside the band for Pelle, so it all got more intense for him.

During the spring, the atmosphere in the house grows darker. Jan Axel remembers that he, Pelle and Øystein fought constantly.

    - Øystein told me that Pelle had gone insane and that he was impossible to live with. And Pelle said that he wanted to go home. They almost hated each other at the end.

After particularly bad fights, Pelle sometimes took his pillow and slept outside in the woods, to get away from Øystein.

Back in Sweden, Pelle’s family is worried. For every visit, Pelle is thinner and they desperately try to help him. When his parents discover that all the money they send to Norway for Pelle to buy food and other essentials, is instead used to buy postage stamps to send out Mayhem demos, they stop sending the money. His father comes over a few times to talk to Pelle and check on him. He makes the last trip in March 1991.

Jan Axel was one of the last people to see Pelle alive. By sheer coincidence, they ran into each other at the train station in Ski the Friday before Pelle died. Pelle told him that he had bought a new knife. That was not weird in and of itself. But he pointed out several times during their short conversation that the new knife was very sharp.

As far as Jørn knows, their neighbour was the last person to meet Pelle, the only person they knew in the entire area.
-He said afterwards that Pelle seemed very happy for the first time in a long while.

Jørn suggests a trip to the house in Kråkstad. He leads the way through central Ski, a small town with strikingly many roundabouts, and points out different buildings that are important to the history of Mayhem. His grandmother’s house where he lived for several years, Øystein’s childhood home on Bekkestien, and the grocery store which is about a five minute walk from the house in Kråkstad. There was also a post office there earlier.
-That is where we sent out all our letters.
When we approach the big red wooden house at the edge of the forest, we can see that someone is moving around inside the garage. Jørn tells us not to slow down and keep driving.

-It’s not a good idea to come here in a car with Swedish license plates. There has been a little too much black metal-tourism here over the years. Just keep driving, he says and keeps his head low in the back seat.

The house is still owned by the same family that owned it in 1991. Over the years they have been understanding of the interest that many have for the place. A while ago, they let a fan who rang the doorbell in and showed him around. He had a hidden camera in a sports bag and the video he filmed, partly in Pelle’s room, later appeared in a documentary on Mayhem.
    -That is Pelle’s bedroom.

Jørn nods at a window on one side of the house that faces the forest. Underneath is a brown garage. That is the roof that Øystein used to climb up to the window to look into the room.
Jørn points at a church tower that can be seen at the other side of the village.
-Over there is the payphone Øystein used to call the police. It is five kilometers away.

Despite the fact that it has been 30 years since Pelle Ohlin died, his friends still get very emotional when he is brought up. Many of them declined to be interviewed for this book. Partly because most of Pelle’s Swedish friends were very shocked by his suicide, and partly because many are still pissed off about how Øystein exploited Pelle’s death for his own gain. Every time the bootleg ”Dawn of the Black Hearts” appears in a record store or the photograph of Pelle’s suicide appears online, they are reminded of the event, which only serves to further fuel their anger. A couple of times, friends of Pelle have gone into record stores and demanded that the record be taken off the shelves. When Sweden Rock Magazine used the cover for an article on rock history in 2006, the editor, Erik Thompson, quickly recieved an angry letter where he was accused of treating the dead with tastelessness and offensiveness.

Jens Näsström, bass player of Morbid and one of Pelle’s close friends, contacts us six months after he initially declined to be interviewed. He has changed his mind. Today he works as a psychologist in Strängnäs and feels that the myth around the figure Dead has gone way too far for him to stay quiet.

-There is something psychological going on when people idealize and project things, and that is very clear in this case. The myth about Dead has become an egregore, a psychic entity with its own life and which has some things in common with Pelle, but it also has many characteristics that he never had. For example, he is often portrayed as a person without humor. And as an asocial person.

THE STORY OF DEAD - PART 3
For a few days, Pelle stays with Jørn and his parents in Langhus south of Oslo. After another few days in Øystein’s childhood home he moves into Mayhem’s rehearsal place, an apartment in nearby Ski. Slowly, the band members begin to understand each other and are brought together by their black humor.

Mayhem decides to take Pelle in as their new vocalist. The band takes lots of new promotional photographs to send out to its network. In the photos Pelle wears white corpse paint with big black rings around the eyes, as well as dark makeup running down from one of his nostrils.
Jan Axel ”Hellhammer” Blomberg becomes the drummer of Mayhem a few months after Pelle came to Norway.

-The others have said that when it was decided that Pelle was going to come over, he came over immediately, the very next day, and brought with him a bag with plastic insects, lots of Dracula comics and books. He was fucking weird, but truly invaluable to us.

Before Pelle took over as the vocalist, Mayhem was a respected metal band, fast and hard, but without the dark vocal undertone and ideology of death that later made them notorious. Jørn used to write the lyrics to the songs, and was mostly inspired by horror- and splatter movies, with a humoristic undertone. Mayhem now starts writing new songs and Pelle is the one penning the lyrics. The band changes direction, both ideologically and musically.

-I always thought the lyrics were our weak point. But Pelle wrote lyrics such as ”Freezing Moon”, fantastic lyrics about his own personal inner struggles. All the lyrics are about what it is like after we die. He believed in life after death. That is how he lived. That wasn’t something that he constructed, says Jørn.

Together with Øystein, Pelle starts to plan out the path ahead for the band. It is going to be harder, more disgusting and more satanist. There are plans that involve severed pigheads and blood.

”I want people to feel disgust when they see us live. I think of having rotted flesh in the air condition. Work out something more with the cutting in myself and have something more than impaled pigheads, maybe an impaled cow or something”, Pelle says in an interview with fanzine Putrefaction, published in 1990.

Pelle, who has always been naturally thin, eats less and less to look as dead and pale as possible. His ambition is to not have to use any make up at all.
Jørn remembers that he talked about death all the time and that he often mentioned his near-death experience.
-He was ten years old and had an accident when ice skating. He fell and his spleen ruptured. He was clinically dead at the hospital and saw a light. After that incident he was very fascinated by death and began to keep funeral announcements. Later, when he began making music, he called himself Dead. That was a great concept.
When Pelle is visiting his family back in Sweden over the summer, there is a break-in at the rehearsal place. The burglars take some guitar pedals, Pelle’s fake blood and comic books. They also lose their contract for the rehearsal place.

Jørn, who is often out shooting his rifle in a nearby forest, has found an abandoned cabin that Pelle moves in to. The cabin has stood empty for 30 years and lacks water and electricity, but the summer is hot. Jan Axel also moves in to the cabin, in solidarity with Pelle. They spend the summer in the cabin, and name it ”Evil Dead”. As autumn approaches, the landowner shows up with a shotgun and forces them to move.

Just like the others in the band, Pelle lives on welfare from the Norwegian government and together they move into a combined camping- and housing area close to the E6 highway, where clients of the local welfare office live.

While looking for a new place to rehearse the band members spend most of their time answering letters and sending out demos to Mayhem fans all over the world. To build a network of distribution and finding record store owners in other countries is of great importance.

Pelle contacts other musicians within the Scandinavian black metal scene. Among others, he corresponds with Tompa ”Goatspell” Lindberg, vocalist of the Gothenburg band Grotesque.
-We corresponded lengthily through letters and stood each other very close. We had mostly the same views on everything, both when it came to music and satanism. He was passionate and had a very romantic way of looking at it all.

Metalion hosts a new year’s party in Sarpsborg in 1988, which is where Pelle and Tompa meet each other for the first time. Many musicians, both from Sweden and Norway, are at the party.

-Pelle and Tompa together, that meant chaos, especially back then, Metalion remembers. They went into my parent’s bedroom and started cutting themselves in there. The room looked absolutely terrible after that. We had to get rid of everything that had blood on it. That night Pelle just went completely nuts.
-We drank Metalion’s moms champagne, Dead and me, in his parents bed because they were not home, Tompa says. And we had really intense conversations. ”Tonight, we’re going to Transylvania, you and me, Tompa” he said. Somewhere in that mess i thought ”No, we’re not doing that tonight”. I remember that i ended up having to hide in Metalion’s room, not because Pelle was being aggressive or anything, but because he was so set on us making this trip together, because we were so close to each other.

Pelle was running around with a knife and was so overexcited that Metalion and Øystein had to tackle him to the ground and restrain him. Rene from the Norwegian band Cadaver had handcuffs and cuffed Pelle to a lamp post in the street, so that he could calm down. The only problem was that no one had the keys to the handcuffs, so they had to take Pelle to a nearby police station to ask for help with cutting them.

-I remember later that night when we were trying to sleep down in the basement. We listened to ”At war with Satan” by Venom, Tompa says. Øystein and Dead slept in the same room and then there was no more fuss about anything. It was a damn good party.
Mayhem continues rehearsing and staying in touch with their network, but things progress slowly. Øystein has just started up the record label Deathlike Silence Productions, with the aim of releasing Mayhem’s records through it. The first band to release a record through the label is Merciless from Strängnäs in Sweden, whose front men, Fredrik Karlén and Erik Wallin, Pelle knows from metal gatherings in Stockholm. In June 1989 Merciless enters Studio Tuna in Eskilstuna and records ”The awakening”. Øystein, Pelle and Jørn come over from Norway to visit. Erik Wallin remembers thinking that Pelle had changed.
-When we hung out with him at parties in Stockholm he was more of a ”drink and have fun” type of guy. He never dominated, there were always others who were more visible and loud. But he was different when he was in the company of the Norwegians. He wasn’t as open as before. We thought they were mostly quiet and kind of weird in the studio. We wondered what had happened to the Pelle from Morbid. They were all kind of distant.

Øystein is happy with what he hears in the studio and they all go and have hamburgers after the recording is finished. Pelle stays in touch with his friends in Sweden, sometimes over the phone, but mostly through letters. He corresponds alot with Jens Näsström from Morbid, who has taken the band in a new direction with a new vocalist after Pelle left. The mystique of death that was part of Morbid’s sound is gone and the band seems to have lost a lot of its energy. Without saying anything to the members of Mayhem, Pelle and Jens plan a reunion of the old Morbid lineup. They even have a gig booked for 9 september 1989 at Fryshuset in Stockholm, along with four of the most prominent metal bands at the time. Pelle makes a flyer depicting a tombstone with the band names carved in to it. A bat can be discerned against the moon in the background. They also make plans for the release of a single to coincide with the reunion. The preliminary title is ”Ancient morbidity” and the cover art depicts a monster with bat wings for arms. But they never go through with the reunion and the gig is cancelled.

However, Mayhem is finally seeing some progress back in Norway. The band has booked their first show with Pelle as vocalist in Jessheim, east of Oslo. The stage show is carefully planned. They are partly inspired by a live video of Venom with a lot of pyrotechnics.

Mayhem buys severed pig heads from a butcher, which they impale on sticks that are on stage. Before the show, Pelle buries his stage clothes in the woods, to make them rot and smell. He has also kept a dead crow in a plastic bag which he plans to smell before entering the stage, in order to truly create a feeling of death. On stage, he is so into his own performance that when he cuts his arm with a broken glass bottle, he cuts far too deeply.

-He cut himself like hell with the bottle and started spraying blood at people, says Jørn. But the wound was way too deep. He had to walk off stage and the janitor at the venue had to patch his arm up with electrical tape.

Pelle goes back and performs the final song before he stumbles off the stage again, nearly fainting after loosing so much blood. Jørn says that Pelle never went to a doctor to get stitches for his wound, and that he got a fucking horrible scar as a result.

-He cut himself alot, but that was the worst scar he had. He only cut himself on stage, never at home. Øystein thought that Pelle cutting himself was a good thing, but I didn’t think so. I always got really fucking nervous and tried to give him dull knives. What he was doing was good enough. The audience didn’t need to be shocked even more.

THE STORY OF DEAD - PART 2
The only recorded Mayhem material with Pelle on vocals are two songs on the compilation album ”Projections of a Stained Mind” from 1990 and the live album ”Live in Leipzig” also from 1990. His fascination with cold and darkness is immortalized in the lyrics of Mayhem’s second album ”De Mysteriis dom Sathanas”, released in 1994, an album that is still considered to be one of the best and most important black metal albums ever made. Erik Wallin from Merciless knew Pelle since their teenage years and thinks that he has turned into an icon for the genre.

-He is definitely kind of a Jim Morrison, a black metal icon. I think anyone interested in black metal traces the genre back to him and what happened.

Instead of making pilgrimages to Père-Lachaise, Mayhem fans travel to Österhaninge Cemetery outside Stockholm and drink beers next to Pelle’s grave. Erik Danielsson, vocalist and frontman of Uppsala band Watain, was 9 years old when Pelle Ohlin killed himself.

-He is a great inspiration to me. The way he looked and his lyrics summarize much of what laid the foundations for my perception of black metal.

Many of Pelle’s ideas live on through Watain, today considered one of Sweden’s most extreme black metal bands. Erik Danielsson thinks Pelle was a source of strength who defined what black metal should be.
-Because of him, people understood that when the genre is taken too far, it’s not funny anymore. If everyone thought that black metal is harmless, then it would be. Those who were inspired by him brought in something good that benefited black metal and those who thought that it was crazy went away, and so did their weak-mindedness. He was instrumental in creating a fitting atmosphere for black metal.
Jørn ”Necrobutcher” Stubberud lives in a bright yellow cottage at Nordbyberget by the E6 highway, 30 kilometers south of Oslo. His living room is full of stuff. He has gotten new windows put in and built a large porch overlooking large, frost-covered fields surrounded by pinetrees. His adult daughter Sabine lives in a small room behind the kitchen. On the walls are pictures of the Mayhem logo and the classic Burzum poster with Varg Vikernes staring menacingly at the camera. Mayhem’s first backdrop hangs over the closet, which Jørn and Øystein made back in Jørn’s childhood bedroom.

-To get straight lines in the pentagram, we used my moms skis and drew with the help of them, says Jørn.

He serves tea in a white cup shaped like a female torso and says that he is working on a book about all his dead friends. Strikingly many of his friends have died, around 100, he claims. He got the idea in 2002 when he was imprisoned for possession of illegal weapons and drugs.

-I have lived a hard life and been caught many times. That’s what happens when you are a man. I like guns and girls! And hashish, he says and laughs.

The Norwegian security service keeps an eye on him and have turned up unannounced at his home many times. Jørn takes out a photoalbum from the well-filled bookshelf and makes room on the messy table.
-This is my new project, he says and points at a piece of paper under an apple and a couple of CDs.

It is a bill for his daughter’s driving lessons.

-1100 Norwegian crowns for one driving lesson. He sighs. But she must learn to drive.
He opens the photoalbum. Every page is full of photographs, taken at parties or of the band. The first pictures are from 1984, showing a teenage Øystein. Soon there are pictures of Pelle, posing for the camera or with wide open, painted eyes and rigid fingers. In one picture, Pelle and Øystein are playing around with fake blood, but Øystein has taken too much in his mouth and starts drooling.

-Pelle sees it and starts smiling just as the photo is taken. That’s how i remember Pelle. That face. That happy face. He always had dark jokes to tell - when you were alone with him. If a person he didn’t know came, he didn’t want to talk at all.

Pelle Ohlin’s first correspondence with Mayhem was through mail. He sent a letter with a crucified, rotten mouse to the band’s mailbox, along with a demo by his band Morbid, a Stockholm band with great theatrical ambitions.

-Back then i drove a pickup truck and opened the letter inside the car, says Jørn. It was the first time i was sent a decomposing animal via mail so i was very surprised, plus the smell was fucking awful. I put the mouse and the letter in the back of the pickup truck. The only thing i took into the truck was the demo. Unfortunately everything flew off the truck when i drove away, so i never got to read the letter, but the music was damn good.

Mayhem was formed in 1984 and soon made a name for themselves within the then very small international hard metal scene. Their minimalistic band photos, where they seldom showed their faces, spread quickly in the metal scene, thanks to Øystein’s talent for networking. Mayhem were inspired by early metal bands like Venom, Mercyful Fate and the Swedish band Bathory, and by more experimental, avant-garde music like Brian Eno and Diamanda Galás. They looked for the most extreme within every genre, and it did not really matter what type of music it was.

Mayhem’s debut album ”Deathcrush”, released in 1987, begins with ”Silvester Anfang”, a song by the respected, experimental German musician Conrad Schnitzler. He was one of the early members of Tangerine Dream and is considered one of the fathers of kraut rock. Øystein was a big fan of Schnitzler, and one hot summer day, simply turned up at his house in Germany and rang the doorbell. When Schnitzler did not open the door, he slept on the front porch and was let inside the day after. Some time later, when Øystein wrote to Schnitzler and asked him to write a song for Mayhem, Schnitzler sent ”Silvester Anfang”, which he had just finished composing.

The combination of avant-garde thinking and extreme aggression gave Mayhem a reputation for ferocity, which greatly impressed Pelle. As the vocalist of Morbid he had created his stage persona ”Dead”, building on his fascination with death and the other side. Despite the fact that Morbid only played live a few times, they were known within the burgeoning Swedish death metal scene for their spectacular stage shows.

Øystein plays a rehearsal demo by Morbid to Jon ”Metalion” Kristiansen, who runs fanzine Slayer Mag, the first death- and black metal magazine in Scandinavia. Metalion contacts Pelle immediately.

-Back then there weren’t many good bands. And then came this band from Sweden that sounded like Bathory! ”Damn, i need to get to know this guy!”, i thought.

Throughout their correspondence Pelle and Metalion become good friends and they often talk over the phone.

-He would call me at 1-2 AM and talk for four hours straight. He tried calling Mayhem too, but Øystein spoke with quite a unique dialect, so Dead couldn’t understand what he was saying.

Over the course of their many conversations, Metalion and Pelle talk about basically everything. About the bands in Stockholm, Bathory, and Pelle’s growing discontentment with his situation in Morbid. The other members do not share his ideas about what the band should be and he grows frustrated. There is no band in Stockholm that is hard and raw enough for him.

”I talked to Euronymous over the phone and he explained his ideas about how the most brutal stage show should be, and we discussed the problem posed by the fact that everyone wants everything to be so normal and boring. We both agreed that i should come over and try singing at some of their rehearsals, to see if i would fit in to the band”, Pelle says in an interview published in Slayer Mag in 1994, three years after his death.

Metalion and Pelle also talk alot about death and the other side. Pelle often talks about a near-death experience he had as a child.

-He talked about the light that he saw. I think it affected him deeply.
In February 1988, 19-year old Pelle Ohlin arrives at Fornebu airport in Oslo. In truth, he has barely talked to anyone in Mayhem, most of his contact with the band has been through letters. Jørn and Øystein pick him up at the airport. They do not know what to expect, the decision that the Swede was to come over was made so quickly. But they calm down a bit when they see that Pelle has long hair and dresses like a hard rocker. The language barrier becomes a problem. Pelle does not understand a word of what the Norwegians are saying, so they switch over to English. Jørn remembers that he was worried. One of the most important things in a band is to have a working internal jargon, and how was that going to work when they could not understand each other?

On their way from the airport Jørn takes him to a couple of friends. He says that Pelle sat in a corner and read comic books instead of talking.

-Someone had Hashish and the pipe was sent around, and i think Pelle felt that he was obligated to try it. He shouldn’t have done that. His face turned white, and i realized that from then on, i shouldn’t send the pipe his way unless he asked for it. It was the first glimpse into who he was. He did not like smoking Hashish or cigarettes, and i only saw him drink alcohol a few times, maybe two times in three years.

THE STORY OF DEAD - PART 5
Strikingly many of Pelle’s Swedish friends question the rumours and myths that have become truth in books, movies and on the internet. They do not recognize their old friend at all. Johnny Hedlund, vocalist and bassist of Unleashed, hung out alot with Pelle in the years before he went to Norway and remembers a social guy who was at every party and who often stayed the night and slept under the living room table.

-All the things we heard and all the things that were written about him after he moved to Norway, we just couldn’t believe it. We who knew him have no idea how that was possible. We can’t even comment on that.
Even Pelle’s brother Anders Ohlin is hesitant at first to talk about his brother, who was five years older than him, but he agrees to meet up with us. It soon becomes clear that Anders is still strongly affected by the death of his older brother. The night before he has been to a party and had champagne till late in the evening. Despite that, he woke up at 5 AM and could not fall back asleep. He says that his conscience troubled him after we called and that he was curious, but unsure at the same time. First he talked to his mother and then his half-brother Daniel, who were both skeptical. In the end, he does not care much about their opinions. He wants to talk, for his own sake, he says.
-When I was studying architecture a couple of years ago, I walked past Galleri Boman, an exclusive art gallery on Östermalm. Suddenly one day, they showed huge pictures of my brother and his band. In the pictures they were drunk and drank beer on a car hood, and there were a few concert pictures as well.
Anders walked in and found out that it was an exhibition by the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard.

-An old lady in there started going on and on about how this Dead person was an incredibly evil human being and she said things that were just nuts. ”What on earth is she on about?” I thought. ”Is this how he is to be remembered, as an evil person?”. That’s not the entire picture.
The myths are problematic, because what Pelle wanted to do was based upon wanting to be the scariest and the toughest. Should we let the one-sided picture of the merciless hard rocker who crucified mice live on, or should we try to make it more nuanced? At the same time, it is because of the many myths that the grieving process has become more difficult.
-It is incredibly frustrating not being able to provide answers about what is true and what isn’t true about him. Because i don’t know. In this genre, it’s all about provoking people. I have been really fucking pissed off at him many times, he has not had to suffer the consequences of what he helped to create, Anders says and quiets down for a moment.
-I have not really come to terms with Pelle’s death at all, truth be told. I was angry with him, but then I put it all aside. And that is not the best way to go. That’s why my conscience troubles me when someone calls and asks me if I’m Dead’s brother.
