  • This is a long one, so buckle in! I decided to film the process of building a ~400whp capable Miata engine to hopefully spread the knowledge of how to do this yourself! This is a service that I provide if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, so feel free to email me or DM me on Instagram if you're interested in having one built for your own miata.

I don't have a Miata, and I've never built and engine before but as an avid DIY'er I really appreciated this video for your workmanship. I ended up listening to this entire video (in the background while I was working) because you really seem to know what you're doing and i like to have exposure to something that I've never done before. I really like the way you work and explain things. You're very detailed and thorough and make sure to explain why you do certain things instead of making the viewer assume certain things. Great video!

I will be rebuilding my 2004 NB engine soon. It has 243k miles. It’s turbocharged with a Garrett turbo. I’m only running 8lbs of boost without a boost controller. I’m also using an aftermarket ECU. All the usual stuff has been done or replaced such as air manifold, clutch, flywheel, fuel injects, fuel much, etc.

Absolutely brilliant Stefan. Really informative - there was so much information but that's OK, it sort of felt like you telling story (and well filmed one-handed!). Thanks for spending so much time (and all that editing for YT rather than using IG) to deliver a real insight into re-building a 1.8. I liked the fact it was 2 and a half hours long- I could watch some and pick it up again later. Better than a whole series of shorter videos.

Dude you’re a legend! Thank you so much for making this video, appreciate your time and effort, really great tutorial. I’ve always been driving European cars like BMWs, audis and mb but after watching some random videos about Miatas I really felt that I really want one, a car that would feel right and something that I could work on to learn. This video kinda gave me a feeling that it’s not a rocket science like I imagined before. Definitely buying and building one Miata for myself ( labour would probably be cheaper in my country but nothing feels as good as your own finished project ). Thanks so much again!

For over 20 years, I pretty much only owned Audis (and a few Volvos)… But had always been interested in Miatas. A couple years ago I finally gave in and bought a one-owner, low-mileage NA.
Don’t get me wrong - living in the snow belt, if I had to rely on just one car for 12 months of the year, I’d be entirely satisfied driving around in a quattro-equipped Audi with either a manual transmission or a dual-clutch.
But I’d be lying if I said the Audi could provide me any of the experiences and sensations that a Miata could.
RWD, naturally-aspirated, light weight, manual transmission, a quick and simple droptop mechanism, and all of this for less than $5k = why did I wait so long to do this??!!?
There are few driving experiences more thoroughly enjoyable than a Sunday morning drive in the springtime, top down, through the mountains and along some cliff-side curvaceous routes not far from where I live in the northeast.
If you’re currently fence-sitting and can’t decide whether to explore the possibilities of life as an MX-5 owner… Life is too short to waste time trying to make simple decisions.. Especially when you know already know “The Answer.”

Not sure if anyone else mentioned mentioned as there's 374 comments, but don't install the circlip gap where the notch in the piston is. That notch is there to pop the clip back out. The way you did it, it'll be a PITA to remove it. Best to place the circlip gap in the 6 o'clock position. That'll allow you to get a pick or small screwdriver behind the clip at that notch to pry it up out of the piston.
Otherwise great job at showing this process! I watched it as it popped up on my feed and there's a lot of similarities to the design of these year engines and the same years of Saturn 1.9 DOHC engines. Only wish we had the support the Miata's had back then. That engine should be a ripper, rock on!

Dope video my dude. I'm a Honda guy myself but honestly, in terms of the internals, all these older 4 cylinders are pretty much the same for the most part. It's cool to see someone posting good in depth videos about engine rebuilding that goes thru every step and why you do it. I think everyone should possess knowledge like this and I'm never afraid to show people how to do things and sharing my tips and tricks from over the years. Nothing is worse than having to fix a broken engine from someone else's stupidity when they built it lol

A quick way I learnt how to remove the valve retainers and keepers is to get a 14mm long socket, a piece of cloth or paper, and a rubber mallet. Put the piece of cloth in the socket, then place it over the retainer. Take the rubber mallet and give it a quick blow. The paper/cloth is used to catch the keepers when they fly out and prevent them from going through the hole in the socket.

Absolutely brilliant. It looks super fun to actually take apart and maybe upgrade an engine. Even though i will probably start with a motorcycle as they are cheaper and easier to acces this video really gave me the lust to actaully get going.
    Keep it up m8!

I rarely comment, but I have to on this one.
Man, good stuff! I’m not a Miata guy by any means. But you DO know how to explain, and show!
If I were you, I’d get a proper adjustable tripod man and you are golden!
    Keep it up man !

@@NappMotorsports The only thing I am curious about is why the reuse of the crank bearings? They didnt look bad, to be fair, Im just curious for my own reasons, not faulting at all.

I didn’t reuse them. The ones I checked the gap with and used were all brand new. They just look weird because of the coating on them.

Good Job 👍🏼 enjoyed watching this video on the build !!! I share your passion for building engines it’s something I grew up around and have done since a teen. I have a tip that maybe useful to you when removing and installing the valve springs take a socket or something that will fit in the combustion chamber of the head to hold the valves closed and then before installing your valve spring removal tool lightly tap the retainer just a bit and that will help the keepers come loose and prevent the valve from tryin to open when using your tool which is also handy when installing valve springs and keepers during assembly.Nothing against the way you do it just thought I’d share a technique I’ve used and was showed years and years ago.
