- A slight comparison of the two respective versions of the Swedish and American version of the film based on the acclaimed novel.
I do no own any materials portrayed in this video as it was created for educational purposes.
The American one's plot is better but the characters are better in the Swedish one. I have to agree, I prefer the Swedish one.
I've read the trilogy & seen both American & Swedish versions. Lisbetg is a brilliant, conflicted character! I tend to enjoy the Swedish version more, feeling that the story itself is Swedish-centric and is best told that way. Rooney Mara's Breakout role though!

the American version is a perfect detective thriller with the wonderful cast should've done the whole trilogy if Sony didn't mess it up

Well, it's "continued" by means of an upcoming sequel based on the 4th book of the series which wasn't even written by the original author and doesn't star the original 2011 cast. So to some it can be considered a sequel, but to the die hard fan's of the US version and the books, they won't know what to make of it.
The girl in the spiders web was shit in comparison to Rooney Mara's Lisbeth salander character from the 2011 'the girl with the dragon tattoo'. I haven't seen the 2009 version of 'the girl with the dragon tattoo' because I'd rather watch the movie without having to read the characters script and pay attention to the movie at the same time. I can handle some subtitles but the majority of a movie kinda sucks despite how good the acting may be
I watched the Swedish versions first and realised way later that there was a Hollywood version - of course it had to be redone. The thing is the story itself is so complex and exciting that I don't see the point in making it even darker. I read the trilogy three times and yes, Mr. Fincher does do a good job, but to me the Swedish version is much more authentic. And Noomi Rapace is simply amazing, while the American version of her is a bit over the top.

I wanted to buy the American version to watch because it was directed by David Fincher. I went to the second-hand store and saw one of the movies was 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'. I was very excited and bought it. It was only when I got home that I realised it was the Swedish version. I thought that I might as well give it a watch, so that night I put it into my computer, closed my door, turned off the light and put in my earphones. Easily one of the best crime movies I've seen and definitely in my top 20 favourite movies list. It absolutely floored me with how brilliant it was. Since then I've lent it to so many of my friends so they could see how excellent it was. About a year later I watched the American one. Very good, but the Swedish version is still much better.
Lisbeth and Blomkvist were better developed in the original.
The investigative aspect was better portrayed.
The ending of the American one could've been trimmed down whereas the pacing of the original was perfect.
And the ending itself was better and more satisfying.
So I think the brilliant Swedish version is superior.

Noomi IS Lisbeth for me. I don't even want to see other versions. Even though I'm American lol Haven't seen the American version and have 0 interest in it. Noomi made Lisbeth real for me.

Solid comparison. I actually prefer the Fincher version, but I also saw it first. The directing decisions you mentioned bring the film to another level for me, but more than that, I prefer this Lisbeth more. She has more depth as a character, as her sweetness, vulnerability and sexuality are better explored. Both are great films in different ways, and I'm happy to see a calm and nuanced discussion like yours. I've been meaning to do something similar on my own channel, as I actually have a friend who's Swedish. Great video. Subbed!
The scene with Nils Bjurman was very disturbing in the swedish version and much better than the US version.

So are the 2 sequels worth watching? I mean I haven't watched the original yet (don't know which version to watch but might end up watching the Swedish) but I don't know if the sequels are as good as the first.

The original title of the book and the Swedish film is translated to ‘Men who hates women’. That is completely LOST in the US version name. Lisbeth Salanders psycological issues is much deeper portrayed in the Swedish film and even more in the trilogy.
Thank you. While I respect the Fincher version, it just seemed as though Mara's Lisbeth sometimes caved to authority too much, like when she asked for Mikhael's permission in the end.
The Swedish version comes across as your normal, book adaptation movie. It's sterile, atmosphere-less, plot driven.... Fincher's is detailed, atmospheric, incredibly scored, tense in every moment, builds a better world, has more intriguing characters; it's better in every way. Now the atmosphere in Fincher's version isn't quite like the book, the Swedish version is truer in that sense. But Fincher improves on the book AND on the Swedish movie.

I disagree with that, the Swedish version it's a lot more realistic, full of tension, the perfect combination for a good detective thriller, while de American version it's prettier and over the top, too bombastic, it feels like you're watching another James Bond movie.
I've seen both versions and there is only one Lisbeth Salander, and that's Noomi Rapace.
Having seen both, I can say The Swedish version isz better than the American one.
The Swedish version's Lisbeth and Mikael were better developed, the handling of Hariet's return was more emotional and better handled, the pacing after Harriet returns was better in this version, and I prefer the ending of this version even though the American version's ending was more accurate according to the book.
I will say that the most memorable scenes (The revenge of Lisbeth; Mikael's torture scene) were definitely better directed in the American version.
Both are very good, but the Swedish version is excellent.

I saw the books first, then watched the swedish version, and when I found out there was gonna be a Hollywood remake, I was skeptical. I did think the exact thing that why do they need to do that!
But Fincher has since become one of my favorite directors and I enjoy both versions, but it's Fincher's version that I have rewatched again and again. That trilogy was never completed, and that makes me sad. But if you ask me which one is better, I could never answer. Although I think I like the English version Lisbeth and swedish version Blomkovist better. These two look like what I imagined the characters liked like when I read the books.

The Swedish version was Understated and suttle in every aspect. The US version is more direct, exaggerated and oversaturated in every aspect. The US version makes shure the viewer understand the charaacters their intentions, character etc. The Swedish version isn’t so direct. In my mind the Swedish Lisbeth is more believable and real, and the US Lisbeth doesn’t.

I have a greater respect for the Swedish version. This is not to say that I did not like the Daniel Craig movie. The English film had a stronger overall cast & higher production values. The original film was shot as a TV movie where as the other production was always meant to be a full fledged film. While Mara is a good actress there is a gritty rougher edge from Rapace.
I think both films can be admired and enjoyed. Still sometime wish that the English trilogy plan could have gone through....

Yup, Mara plays Lisbeth too 'soft' (no doubt Fincher's doing), the reason for Rapace's Salander's anger/rage is only fully explained in the two sequels.

Having read the books, I do find the attention Fincher's version makes for the realization of the photographs during the parade scene is played out better. It leads the viewer to join in the look while the "Swedish version" is over way too soon and has almost no significance. Although, I do like the Swedish version much better for when he's talking to the carpenter's widow. I find Fincher's tone and feel to be superior and aspects of the plot play out better. But then the Swedish version plays the investigation out better. You get a real sense of horror at the discoveries while Fincher almost seems to run out of time for it.
I find the Swedish movie very ordinarily shot and artless compared to Fincher's. As stated below, the Swedish one having a very much made for TV look. The characters more interestingly drawn in Fincher's as well.

The biggest difference is Lisbeth herself who in the US version seems more scared and insecure rather than closed off and genuinely despises men who hate women (which is also the swedish title).
Lisbeth would never back away in fear and never fall in love like a schoolgirl and buy her crush a jacket to then throw it away when seeing said crush with another woman. And Lisbeth would never say that she is insane because she is not! others had forced that label onto her for their own gain and she fights against that label in the other movies/books so that is yet another thing that ruined the american character for me... Plus Noomi did an amazing performance which was hard to beat! Rooney did a nice job and the character would be perfect for something less deep or dark.
Plus it really bothers me that they use the swedish pronunciation of the names, swedish cities, swedish TV-channels and even swedish writing on the newpapers... If you make an american version, make is american! otherwise just watch it with subtitles like the rest of the world!

This was originally a small, student project. I've actually been in the planning stage to do another video, though not related to this franchise. I could actually go back to it if I feel I have something worthwhile to say. I'm actually kind of amazed at the responses I've gotten from it.

Personally, I feel that the American version is directed much better than the Swedish version but I think that the Swedish version's script is better. Although it doesn't matter anyway because apparently they are moronically skipping the 2nd and 3rd books for the American versions which is nonsensical because the first book is really meant more as an introduction to Lisbeth and many plot elements introduced are meant to be followed up in the 2nd and 3rd installments. Plus it ends on a cliffhanger. So if they skip to the 4th book then it essentially makes this American movie utterly useless.
Nice comparison! I'm curious, you sounded like you enjoyed the American version much more but then said you preferred the Swedish one? Just wondering why? I read the books and saw both movies all close to when the American one originally came out...while I loved Noomi, I preferred the American one for the fact that Lisbeth didn't look like a ridiculous over the top Goth and the fact that I thought the mystery aspect was set up better and made more sense. Just my opinion though! I can appreciate both movies!
Thank you! They're both particularly good, and my preference is slight. It's been a while since I've thought about these films honestly, so I hope I can answer this coherently since this video's well over 2 years old now. I believe my reasoning at the time of writing the script was that the Swedish one felt more organic, since the novel itself was originally rooted from there. It feels like it's a closer understanding for their own story. Which isn't to say the American version doesn't get it right, and I agree that it did certain things better. And Fincher's style is definitely a massive leap above what is comparable to what was otherwise a compotent, if not lack-luster film composition of the original. It might be worth a re-watch for me.
Fun fact: there was originally to be more content to this video. However, it would've ended up being like 11 minutes long. Not uncommon for UA-camrs, I suppose, but this was part of an assignment. Never thought it would get as much exposure as it's gotten. Really should just make more...

Having read the book and watched the original version of the film, I didn't think Hollywood had the guts to give full credit to story, esp the brutal rape scene. But they came very close.
I'll take the Swedish version - more gritty; only one flaw in it: the bible verses were discovered by Blomkvist's daughter not Lisbeth.

Not true. It's true that the books are better than the movies because the plot is a lot more detailed, and the swedish versions stick to the books, but that doesn't necessarily make them better.
Firstly, it frustrates me that she went and mated with a dude. Like, gross ? Men are all hard, rough, never feels right and not soft. But that's MY opinion. Secondly, I'm writing a book, and it is almost like the title to this film, but it's tail instead of tattoo. I was amused by it as I wasn't even thinking about that when writing it.

It was a while since I saw the original version, but I saw the remake last night. I was very impressed with the photography and lightning work in the remake as well as the subtleties in the acting showing how the relationship, especially between Blomkvist and Salander, was developing. With the ending however I was a bit disapointed. I was waiting for that adrenaline rush that never came, which might be explained by the different ways that scene is made in the two movies. I was much more on edge with Haber's portrayal of Martin in the final scene than I was with Skargård's. Looking at the big picture however I must admit the american version was more skilfully made. It was also nice to see Craig as an american actor in a Swedish envronment. Doesn't happen everyday. ^^

Seen both, like the American version a lot more because of the tone, coloring, mood etc, things you outline here. Also largely because I think the Marra/Lisbeth is the more interesting character. You make excellent examples in the conference room scene with Lisbeth behavior. Also, look at the Repace/Lisbeth, she is made up with goth makeup including lipstick. Her outfit is almost a Halloween costume of how a Lisbeth would dress. Lisbeth would have to care how the world saw her to even put on lipstick, and take the time to dress like that. Repace picks up the coffee mug with two hands showing a female trait, where as Marra played her as not male or female really. Clearly Lisbeth is female, but Marta’s version is down the center, making her version more interesting IMO.

The Swedish script is far inferior. Amateur storytelling. And that lisbeth looks like a costume on Halloween. She’s very loud visually and physically. Not my fav.
I think the movie copying in hollywood needs to be stopped or at least maybe the "o so creative Jews" need to start changing every scene with the story ending basically the same way....
I preferred the David Fincher film (English version) and preferred the way Rooney played Lisbeth.
The difference, I felt, between the films is that the Swedish one seemed to be more about voyeurism. They really played up Lisbeth's gathering data on Mickael to the point that it seemed almost sexualized. It felt like an every, well not every, but some men's wet dream to have a hot exotic girl spying on him. So we the audience are getting off on watching her, watching him.
The David Fincher film seem to focus more on women. There were lots of very strong female characters in the film. Women that I could relate to.
Anyway, both were pretty good films.

I think Fincher's version's biggest strength and biggest weakness is the same - being more refined, polished and tidy as a product than the Swedish version.
You see Fincher's a world class director working with top of the line equipment and personnel. It makes the movie look more professional. But by the same token this makes the movie also more anemic, less gritty.
Another thing is you see the Swedish original is attempting to do an American style thriller, but it's still "held back" in this regard by the cultural barrier and a smaller budget. The American version is American through and through - it's more obvious in its artistic choices. The cold color scheme because we are in "foreign and cold Sweden", the flashy main titles, the more merchandise-savvy get-up of Lisbeth.
And lastly Lisbeth. Rooney Mara looks like an American suburban upper middle class teenager going through a rebellious phase, who thinks Green Day are punk rock. It looks like a pose. And she is way too neat in her look to be truly weird, too meticulous. Noomi is still too pretty and tidy to pass for a legit weirdo, but her get-up, again probably due to budget and culture, isn't as obviously polished and aimed at grumpy teenagers.
Both versions have merit. IMO Fincher missed an opportunity to deliver a great movie in order to satisfy the studio's demand for a "clean product".
This is one of the best comparisons I've read between the two movies.
Characters don't always need a build up for introduction. Films don't always need to be stylized with thematic colors to be excellent.

The Swedish version is best! There is no argue! I will admit this is not the worst American version of a brilliant European story! There have been so many worse than this! This American version, IS good!

Americans always glam up, alter and americanize everything! But that does not make it better!

There is always such a feeling of loss of the sense of reality, and a loss of "real people" that doesn't all look like Barbie and Ken dolls, when Americans butcher European movies, instead of just enjoying the original and not conforming everything to American ways! In general, it's a God damn shame!
Again I do think the American version of the movie is good! But I don't get why Americans are so narrow-minded, that they can't enjoy anything that doesn't come out of America!!

i like the Swedish version WAY more than the American version. For one thing, the actress is far more authentic to the part, she is perfect in every way for that part and clearly embraced it to portray the character beautifully - top job! Also, all the actors in the Swedish version look so perfect for their roles. The comparisons of lighting and where people are seated, etc. have no bearing in an already perfect movie and it seems a distinctly American literary view to think such obvious things do not distract rather than enhance. We don't need a darker room to create tension etc. because the brighter room reveals the tension that is portrayed by the actors, for example, when the fellow in the office sees the nose-ringed wild looking young woman for the first time, and when she does not shake his extended hand. Many of us have worked in b right office environments, which are the norm, and it always feels semi-surreal and uncomfortable in such lighting, so i feel the brighter lighting was also perfect, while the darker lighting in the American version stood out as a silly nod to literary devices, Such devices are somehow trivializing, presenting as if requisite to a 'good story,' but they are very upsetting nuisances that distract when you enjoy a story and don't wish to be distracted by all these constant nods/obeisant bows to techniques. I love the honest feel of the family get-together in the Swedish version, so impromptu and genuine. But the main actors in the original are, throughout, absolutely riveting. The "rapist pig" isn't aggrandized into a slob, so obvious and ridiculous in the American version! Instead, the Swedish version presents a very cultured and refined, trustworthy-looking gentleman who would most definitely (we women naturally understand) be believed by the authorities were he to make a false report against his charge; while we simultaneously realize of a certainty that any complaint Lisbeth might make against him to the authorities would inevitably fall upon deaf ears... The American version - why was it made?
In the swedish version, there is no clues for that Martin is the killer, still I felt/guessed it. But in the American version is too easy, with the weapon cage and stuff. The swedish one is much more authentic and raw.
I definitely prefer the Swedish version over the American version; but admit the American version does have its qualities.
My primary concern with the American version was the ending. For whatever reason, Finch had Lisbeth ask Mikhael's permission to go after Martin. Lisbeth Salander WOULD NEVER ASK ANYONE'S PERMISSION, not even someone she is fond with.

Any good film maker should know that a much bigger budget gives the director more room to paint the big picture and give depth to the story. The books and the movies are great art and should be watched over and over again.
I really dont understand why people say the english version sucks. Fincher did an amazing job with this franchise, Rooney Mara was incredible, even better than Daniel Craig in my opinion. I'll go as far as to say that both movies did a really good job capturing what made the book so successful, but Fincher's version did it more justice, the atmosphere that Fincher potrays in the movie is incredible, if feels way more dark and cold that the Swedish version wich is one of the biggest differences between the two. Also Trent Reznor made a 10/10 soundtrack for the english version. So i'd say without a doubt that the English version is better, wich of course takes nothing away from the Swedish one considering the difference in the budget and the cast.
It’s funny because to me the darkness you’re describing from Fincher’s adaptation is what’s making the movie less interesting, in my opinion... it takes over the rest and we actually lose the amazing different shades from the books... something we don’t in Swedish adaptation.
Again it’s just my opinion and it certainly depends on what you’re expecting from a movie like that!
The Swedish version was thought as a trilogy and we have to watch it as such.

I feel like Noomi visually doesn't pull of Lizbeth as well as Rooney. She just looks so healthy in comparison to the pale and thin Rooney version. Felt like they were relying too heavily on the wardrobe. I also think the spiked collar was really overboard whereas Rooney's version is still quite extreme but felt a little more believably punk (even the shaved eyebrows worked for me, though maybe not the hairstyle).

Having seen the 3 Swedish movies, the American remake and read the Millennium Trilogy I connected more with Rooney, she seemed more real to me.
I saw the 3 movies first, then read the books and finally watched the remake.
The 2011 portrayal of Lisbeth Salander made more sense to me.
She was more of a shadow, she didn't like to stand out, she didn't care about being nice... she was more genuine to me. Her anger was quiet and hidden, she didn't advertise it.
I really wanted to see the 2nd and 3rd movies but they never got made.
(Not even going to mention the Claire Foy one.)

I just read the Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest. I didn't realize there were two versions of the movie. The adverts for the non Finscher one did not impress me, because, as you said, Salander was reclusive.
So hard to choose! I just finished the book (in Norwegian), and I think the English trailer looks amazing! It feels like it captures more authenticity, and more details from the book. I saw the Swedish version when it came out (so long ago...), but it went right over my head back then, and all I remember is the feeling of way too much being edited and shoved in to way too short time, leaving an end result which I just felt clueless watching. I had no idea what the actual plot was. Seeing both trailers now, I feel like I would have got the plot from the English version. Obviously Noomi Rapace has a much sexier, gripping look, but I feel like the Hollywood version of Salander is more the odd looking girl I pictured from reading the book. I wanna get the English version, the only thing holding me back is everybody in the comments section saying how much of the authenticity is lost in it...
If you still haven't, go get the English version. As somebody who read the books, watched the swedish movies, enjoyed them, and was mildly irritated with the idea of a Hollywood remake, trust me the English version is good. I'm not saying the swedish versions are bad, but I enjoy rewatching the English version way more.
