Blades in the Dark is a tabletop crime-sim set in a haunted city, in which we find Zillah, Edvard, Kasimir, Lilith and Barnaby -- five would-be thieves drawn to an antiques shop in the crowded district of Nightmarket. I love the portrayal of the ghosts as bored middle-managers just needing to check off that someone learned a lesson (any lesson) before moving on to their next victim in a very busy schedule.

Edvard trying to figure out if Lilith's dad's snake carpet matched the snake drapes had me rolling with laughter. Once again, top tier adventure.
Even funnier about not being able to tell is we all know for a fact there's at least one snake in those trousers.
I kind of wish Barnaby had been along solely to justify a chorus of "It's the most wonderful crime of the year"
honestly this would have been a perfect barnaby and lilith mission since lilith is good with ghosts and barnaby could have either been rolling sway to teach screws a lesson or learning a lesson himself
There was so much right with this episode but the best of all might be the return of Luke's cursed fortune rolls dooming elderly men to untimely deaths

To be fair, that's a valid moral lesson too: it takes more than one handful of feel-good messaging to undo a lifetime of ingrained, self-reinforcing bitterness. "It is easier to destroy than to create", and all that.
It's not the most jolly and festive moral, but a sobering life lesson nonetheless.

I love Luke’s obvious Michael Caine impression. I can’t fault him, The Muppets A Christmas Carol is the best adaptation of the story I’ve ever seen.
I personally like the 1970 Scrooge with Albert Finney, but the Muppet Christmas Carol is a close second.

I hope Edvard and Lilith have made a note to go check on Mr Screws next year. Cold winters can be very hard on elderly people especially when they have to contend with vengeful spirits welding bone scythes.
It would be such a shame if all his wealth went missing before his nephew Frederick could bury it with him.

I have been waiting for BiTD to come back for sooo long. Just watched the finale again yesterday. I was starting to get worried that people would just forget about the series.
Personally I love how Luke handles a more dramatic/gritty setting. I feel like the BiTD stakes feel so high because of the amazing tone he sets, his great voice acting ajd character work and the huge increade in role playing done by everyone else (when compared to Oxventure). Also, Johnny is such a great player, who really seems to make the story feel more real.
I love this series. The story that has been woven. I think my favorite part is where kasimir and Barnaby are in the hot air balloon race 🤣 who would have thought Barnaby would have the first kill?🤣🤣🤣😎
The murder orphans are even better than the mortar orphans by now I think.
The problem with Oxventure at least to me is that it has become far too comedic for me to enjoy. Even its scenarios for adventures feel like they are mere setups for jokes and the gang's comedy has become crazier and crazier with every adventure, to the point where the Beeples skit with Andy and Luke hiding bee costumes both horrified me and made me instantly accept it as something completely normal to them. As much as I loved Oxventure when it started (was a huge inspiration for me to start playing D&D actually) I just can't watch it because it gets derailed way too much, way too quick.
But somehow Oxventure: Blades in the Dark seems to be immune to this. Even though Luke (perhaps the most prone to doing "LoL random humor" for the sake of it in the D&D campaigns) is the one GMing this and yet, the stories feel developed, serious and competent with just the right amount of silliness in them to remind us that this is a game. I don't know how Luke went from "Dob the Random Bard" to this, but great job I say.
@@darklord884 I think what helps to keep BitD from consistently going off the rails like Oxventure is because it is pretty rare for everyone to gather for a session. The group tends to riff off of each other quite often and Johnny has let them get away with it for so long that now the party tends to run the adventure instead.
@@darklord884 I guess they still haven't made that quite as serious as Johnny mentioned they were making it. I still enjoy it, but I can see where you're coming from.
The zoom streams can be a part of it though, I didn't think it was ever as outrageous live or at the table.

23:12 - Edvard immediately taking revenge on his big brother.
49:08 - Edvard analysing the trousers of Lilith's father.
1:07:33 / 1:08:23 - Edvard desecrating a corpse.
50:04 / 52:20 / 56:12 - Lilith coming home to meet the family.
49:39 - _"You stay away from my dad's trousers."_
53:55 - Lilith shielding her mum's eyes from the buff Santa.
1:12:30 - Lilith stopping a grim figure's scythe mid-swing.
1:16:43 - This whole escapade is just an amazing parody of A Christmas Carol, and nothing encapsulates that better than this hilarious butchering of that classic ending.
54:02 was my favorite part.
Who could have guessed that Edvard’s fast acting poison would later kick in via bean!?
I feel compelled to express my EXTREME appreciation for Andy’s costuming for Edward. Especially the jacket this time was absolutely phenomenal.
Also, Luke, that could not have gone better. The ending was a perfect comedy beat.

Only Lilith could make "You're going to have spiced wine and you're going to enjoy it" into a threat! XD A lovely fun episode that's really perked me up on a rough day.

I kinda want to know what the others were up to. Barnaby probably got hammered (and wrecked another coat) with Kasimir and Zillah most likely got into the Crimsnight spirit by beating up alot of fellow criminals (for money).
I imagine Zillah was probably with her family, keeping them safe. I feel like Kasimir was almost definitely one of the crims

Spoiler: the slow-acting poison takes exactly 1 lifetime to take effect.
