    • @brothersaid5406
      @brothersaid5406 7 років тому +2

      Yeah, they won't go that route, but when you think about it, they'd benefit hugely if they did. If you're in the Star Wars story telling business, and you REALLY want a story line featuring a new heroine Rey as a super powerful force welder BUT you want to transition from the Skywalker storyline to a new one - what better way to do it?! Revan and Bastilla are two of the MOST popular characters in the whole Star Wars universe.You don't lose fans, you reinforce the existing fan base and come off looking quite cool and savvy. Besides, the Revan/Bastilla storyline is now canon, SO you wouldn't have to strain at the exposition: Bastilla and Revan disappeared for years at some point. You could easily say they had children who they hid for their safety (Ala Luke and Leia being hidden for their safety). That the Revan/Bastilla line leads to Rey, but her parents and grand-parents and great-great- grand parents actually forgot their ancestry. That shit would be the BOMB!

    • @brothersaid5406
      @brothersaid5406 7 років тому +1

      The Revan/Bastilla as Rey's ancestors storyline would be fantastic and reinforce the fan base's trust in Disney's stewardship of the Star Wars brand. Besides, the story almost writes itself! Imagine how easily it could be explained in a pivotal moment of truth scene (Snoke perhaps is battling Rey: "Have you ever wondered why your parents deserted you on Jaku? They were summoned by Skywalker - but I intercepted and destroyed them first!". "You killed them!" Rey screams. "I had to kill them lest they discover the truth. I had no idea however, they left a child behind. " Snoke replies."Why would Luke summon my parents?!" Rey demands."To reveal to them a truth he had discovered." Snoke snarls ." Your parents were the descendants of two of the most powerful force welders in the history of the galaxy!"....blah, blah, blah you get the point) ,

    I do think she will be a Skywalker just because of what you stated.The average movie goer isn't the hardcore fan who are drooling for every nugget.They will keep it simple.Unless they are going for the same shock that ep5 had.Lucas did the same thing.All of the movies have been kid and family friendly with enough substance for the hardcore to chew on.They need to sell toys bottom line.

      You're right: The bottom line is they want to make money... and they will do whatever they think will make them the most. Don't get me wrong, I think Disney has done a fine job with Star Wars so far. But I don't try to kid myself, they purchased Lucasfilm to make a lot of money and for no other reason.

    fine if they want to make her "nobody" but why the hell would they emphasize luke/Anakin's lightsaber "calling" to her they could have done a hundred different things to make her realize she's force sensitive but instead they hammer it home with a lightsaber that was built and weilded by a skywalker and disney was subtle as a hand grenade with what maz says , she easily could have just said this was belonged to luke skywalker, but instead goes on to mention his father everything is done for a reason they know how deeply scrutinized every last detail of this movie would be, just my 2 cents can't wait for December or better yet 2 more weeks until celebration

      Maybe we viewed that the wrong way. Maybe the saber went to Rey over Kylo Ren (who we know is a Skywalker) simply to avoid falling in his hands. So it wasn't picking one Skywalker over another, but rather simply staying out of the hands of one who is unworthy of it.

    I agree i think the simplest, will be the best. In an interview, Daisy Ridley said in her mind, (supposedly not told the parentage, at time of the interview), that Rey's father was Luke. Till it's said, that is what i'll go with. She Played the part, so i think she'd probably know better than anyone. other than the screen writers, of course

      Want to post a link to that interview I'd like to see it in writing. I know she said in an interview that, "she thought it was clear who her parents were. I've never seen any interview or article if her stating Rey was Luke's daughter. I mean if you want to get that technical I can find you a link to the interview with one of the actresses who tried out for the part of Rey which Back them was a casting call for "Kiera Kenobi" who they renamed Rey granddaughter or grand niece of Obiwan Kenobi. So funny how often a characters heritageband trajectory can change under a writers sword of a pen stroke or hammer on a keyboard.

    I think the title of Episode 7 spoils the parenthood a little bit. The awakening in the force came from rey. If rey was a Skywalker or a Skywalker-Solo there wouldn't be a awakening because the force were already in her family. So if she was a no-one and there were no force users in her family before, there would be a awakening. Thats why I think she is really a no-one.

    • @thorskywalker

      Or perhaps it is that of Harry Potter. Son of a famous wizard couple who had his powers awaken at a certain age. Do not assume that the Force is inherently awakened. Otherwise, Vader would have found Luke a long time ago.

    I like your #3 theory (other than #1 Luke's daughter and #2 Han Solo's daughter) of her just being a growing up orphaned girl, never knowing her parents (or parents in the dark side of the Force like Luke and Vader parallel)! She then became self-motivated to become who she is vs who her lineage is!

  • @CayenneTravels
    @CayenneTravels 7 років тому +2

    It's a Disney movie, and if there is any die-hard theme Disney stands by it is that parents must be killed off or left behind. It would make no sense to somehow tie her back in to parents. Maz isn't telling Rey that her parents are gone, Maz was telling us not to expect and look for them.

  • @tylergirl1970
    @tylergirl1970 7 років тому +5

    I understand your theory, but you could make the same argument about Luke. Was he great because he developed many skills on his own or was it "because he was a Skywalker"? Did that make him disappointing or minimize what he accomplished on his own? I just can't see her being no one and being called on in such a very specific way. But who knows....

    • @anthoneyrago
      @anthoneyrago 7 років тому +1

      tylergirl1970 Luke's story is very different from Rey's because he was on a heros journey, Rey is on a heroines journey. The two tropes are extremely different and that's an understatement.

    • @evanbao93

      Janet Rubio No, that's like saying a male pirate and a female pirate are two different pirates even though they do the exact same thing. And by saying Luke and Rey's story are different because of gender, you're implying that Rey can't handle a man's journey.

    I don't think she's a Skywalker but I do think that if her parents' identity was truly irrelevant then Rey's force vision in Awakens wouldn't have included them. I suspect that at least one of them will be a character who is so well known that even if this is you're first Star Wars film you'll have some idea who it is and that there will be some exposition in the plot.
    I'm hoping that she's Obi Wan's granddaughter and for one of her parents (face to face or via a recording or even written letter) to reveal this. Maybe they have sent Luke a message explaining why they left her on Jakku and asking him to find her when the time is right and "as my father started you on your path in the force, guide her on the journey".

      I'm all ready for Rey Phasma.
      Captain Phasma acted mighty strange for a dedicated member of the First Order. We already know she practically raised Finn and the others of his unit, and while she was an FO hardliner back then, she still acted like Finn's mother. Now clearly they're not related, but this attitude is also shown towards Rey.
      Remember, Phasma is a soldier, probably the single most talented First Order stormtrooper. She *taught* Finn, so she would know how to take on both Finn and Rey when she's instead captured. Why then did she *let* herself be captured? What's her motivation? I can't see any personal gain in it; the only thing that makes sense is sentiment.
      It's her treatment of Rey that really surprised me however. I can understand her letting Finn leave, if she subconsciously considers him a son, but Rey is an unknown. Why did she treat Rey the same? My thoughts are that she knows who Rey is, and who Rey is to *her*.

      I'm not sure what kind of "misuse of the Force" is being implied by Chris manaloe here. I think what we will all see as the final trilogy continues is that the Force is more than Jedi and Sith. Maz even makes the case of seeing evil in many forms over her 1000 year life: The Sith (no doubt referencing the Jedi/Sith War, when there was a company of Sith Lords before Bane instituted the "Rule of Two"), The Empire (with no reference to the Sith behind its formation) and the First Order, which, while being led by a darksider is not Sith at all. I think this makes the story much bigger.

    I don't understand why people say making her Luke's daughter would be "lazy storytelling". Yes it has been done before, but it is exactly because it has been done before that making her Luke's daughter is, out of everything they could do, the most difficult thing to pull of and to make work. It would actually be the ballsiest move they could do, anything else than that would be an easier story to tell.
    It would be so difficult to pull of that I can't imagine them doing it, despite all the hints pointing out to it.
    I don't know who she will end up being, and I love that I don't know. It is sad that you are 100% right in this video, The Force Awakens was never going to satisfy every Star Wars fan, and The Last Jedi probably has even less of a chance of doing it because so many are unable to keep an open mind about what's next. I can already picture myself reading hundreds of comments on the internet next December claiming that the story we got sucks and that what they had in mind for it would have been better.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +7

      I personally love the fact that I'm not 100% sure who she'll be. I'm willing to give Disney the benefit of the doubt no matter what direction they take the story in. I don't think it'll be lazy if Rey is a Skywalker... the problem with it now is that by making it a 'mystery' (instead of just knowing who she is all along) the reveal now needs to be something special or why make it a reveal at all?
      Disney is in a no win situation. No matter who or what she is the internet is going to be littered with hate from angry people that the story didn't go as they want it. The greatest thing about the internet is that it gives everyone in the world a voice... and the worst thing about the internet is that it gives everyone in the world a voice.

    Dude, Rey is Lukes daughter. There are SO many Luke easter eggs in her house, her reoccuring dream is literally about the island Luke is on, when Kylo and Rey had a force pull duel for the Skywalker jedi saber Rey won. Anyone who can't see Rey is Luke's daughter is in for a painful awakening. Why would Rey go find Luke?? Why not his sister, Leia? Because Leia knows Rey is Luke's daughter. Not Finn, or whatever other wild BS people are so desperately pushing.

  • @eyespy3001

    I couldn't agree more with this video. Hearing these theories about Rey being the embodiment of the Force, or Rey being a clone of Palpatine/Vader/Luke, or the daughter/granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi, I can't help but think how convoluted they are. Each one of these theories would require a MASSIVE amount of exposition, which would cause the narrative to be so clunky and messy.
    Simplicity is key and would be required to tell the leanest, most-punchy story possible.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      Simplicity is the key. The more complex her origin, the more screen time is devoted to it and the more likely you are to lose people. What people often forget is there can be beauty in simplicity, and if the story itself is interesting and done right she doesn't need to be the clone of Anakin's reincarnation... who had a child with Obi-Wan....

    They have stated quite clearly, this is a continuation of the Skywalker story. Now, regardless of Ben and Luke. Rey is the main protagonist, this has been stated clearly. So, if the main character of this film isn't a Skywalker family member, then it's not a continuation. Really, it's that simple. You can analyse little things all day. But simple is the best, and she's Anakin's grand daughter, that's nice and simple.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      She can be a huge part of the Skywalker story without having to be a Skywalker. The prequels were as much Obi-Wan's story as they were Anakin's and he wasn't a Skywalker. The same way this sequel trilogy could be as much Kylo/Ben's story (not to mention Luke) without Rey being a Skywalker. I just think her being a Skywalker would also be overkill. Sure, it is the Skywalker saga but not everyone has to be from that family to matter in the galaxy.

    • @evanbao93
      @evanbao93 7 років тому

      George Lucas was clearly intending Anakin to be the main protagonist of the Prequel Trilogy. The reason why he put more emphasis on the love story between Anakin and Padme in Attack of the Clones was because he realize that it was becoming more of an Obi-Wan story rather than Anakin. He must learned his lesson after The Phantom Menace, namely that the movie had no central protagonist.
      Whether you like it or not, this is a Skywalker story and Rey is going to be our main protagonist for the entire Sequel Trilogy. They are not going to shift it to Kylo Ren like they did with Anakin.
      Besides, I don't think it's an overkill. Skywalkers always have a strange phenomenon of attracting coincidences to an absurd degree. That's the charm of Star Wars, is it not?

    Another great video. Even though a backstory like Palpatine or Qui-Gon would be interesting, it does tend to present lot of problems and would create many more questions that a reveal would normally create. I believe a good "origin" store would obviously answer who her parent(s) are, but leave the "okay, so what happened that she was left on Jakku?". One example could be to have her be a new character, yet have her origins loosely explained to her by Luke. He could've known her parent(s) and that they have a child, but didn't know that their child, Rey, survived when something horrible happened.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +2

      It'd be interesting if we never get it explained as to how and why she got left on Jakku. Perhaps, as you say, Luke did know her parents and doesn't know why they left her on Jakku. Who knows? But I think it's going to be very hard to explain why anyone took her to Jakku and left her there. Much easier to explain that she was born there and someone left her behind.

    I just don't see why _"making herself strong and capable"_ would suddenly imbue her with a strength in The Force that even _Luke_ couldn't muster until after he had trained for several weeks with Yoda. Also, it doesn't go anywhere to explain the presence of Lor San Tekka and the map to finding Luke Skywalker, being conveniently on the _same planet._

    You seem to be desperate to convince us who she isn't rather than who she is and have disregarded other "clues" within The Force Awakens that points to her being a Skywalker or descendant thereof.
    Some possible clues that come to mind:
    Kylo's obvious interest in Rey and the power she has.
    The conversation between Han and Maz about who Rey is, that is cut short.
    Why Leia makes such a fuss to comfort Rey with the embrace at the end of the movie and the fact that Rey heads off with Chewbacca in the Falcon to find Luke.
    Why Chewbacca and not a member of the Resistance?
    Why the Falcon and not a Resistance ship?
    Are they subtle hints at her connection with her family or are they merely a coincidence?
    The whole Force dream sequence that involves a fight between Luke and Vader on Bespin, Yoda's comment, Obi Wan's comment, Unkar Plutt dragging her away as a ship flies off etc, etc.
    You can't simply present these sequences and not address them sometime in the future, they have to mean something.
    It would be nonsense to use them as clues or hints and then just turn around and go "Nah, Rey has no connection whatsoever to any of those things in the Force dream, all red herrings."
    Rey may not be a Skywalker, but there is more evidence in favour of her being related in someway rather than not.

      As someone pointed out in another video, every single part of that force vision was essentially from the lightsaber's point of view. It was actually there or most likely there for every one of those events. So the vision doesn't really demonstrate anything about who she is, other than the lightsaber choosing her as its bearer.
      One big plot hole that plays strongly against her being a Solo or Skywalker:
      Kylo Ren doesn't know who she is. If a relative was born, wouldn't he hear about it? "Congrats, Ben, you have a new baby sister!" or "Have you met your new cousin yet?" She's old enough that she would have been born before he fell to the dark side.
      But he's clueless about who she is. All he knows is that she's very powerful, and she has "his" lightsaber.
      They're not related.

      He does know who she is. He says "it is you" when he sees her.

    • @Fullbatteri

      Another clue:
      *When Kylo is force-interrogating Rey, he sees what Rey dreams of when she's "desperate to sleep at night" -an ocean, and an island.*
      So yeah, Rey pretty much dreamed of Luke's location without even knowing it, and freaking Kylo Ren saw where to find Luke, and he didn't even notice he already had the information he was trying to take out of Rey xD
      That's a pretty big confirmation right there.

    If Rey's parents are irrelevant to the story, it's still a better revelation than her being Luke's daughter.
    But for me it's best if she's a Kenobi descent or Palpatine descent, and this wouldn't make the movie too complex since Disney can make an explanation in movie about Obi Wan being a legendary Jedi master who helped Anakin and Luke, or being a very powerful force user like Emperor Palpatine that almost brought wreck to the galaxy.
    Why it's not too complex? In Episode VII there's even Darth Vader's mask and my friends who watched Episode VII as first Star Wars were okay with it.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      I still think one of Disney's main goals is to show that Rey is a self created character, if you will. That her story is before her, not behind. That what she'll become is important, not where (or who) she came from.

    She is the clone of Luke. It was taken out of the hand that Luke lost in the ESB. She is strong with the force, she is a good pilot, and in her flashbacks she had this vision of cloud city hall where Luke lost his hand. Ta ra..., mistery solved. That is why there was going to be a scene of Luke's hand floating in space.

    I thought it was rather obvious that she is a Kenobi. He is the only one who directly talks to her in the force vision. Along with the "British" accent. Also along with the poetic fact that Luke will now be teaching the daughter of Obi-Wan. Where as Obi-Wan taught Luke.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      Obi-Wan taught Luke for all of five minutes. He explained to him what the Force was while on Tatooine and then gave him one lesson on the Falcon. He did however train Anakin so what you're saying could make sense in that respect, that a Skywalker will now instruct a Kenobi.
      However, I'd argue that Obi-Wan speaking a few words to Rey in a vision doesn't make it obvious that she's a Kenobi... not when there were only four choices to speak to her: Yoda, Anakin, Qui-Gon and of course Obi-Wan, who are the only Force ghosts. Then you need to factor in that Qui-Gon did not 'fully' become a Force ghost and Obi-Wan needed to be taught how to even commune with him. And that if Anakin speaks to anyone in this movie, it'll likely be Luke... and that Yoda's Force ghost reveal will likely be a big deal... that pretty much just left Obi-Wan to speak to her in that scene.

    You shouldn't have read those books. Too many cooks spoil the broth. It's reasonable that Lucas shared his complete vision with Kasdan, because they know each other, as coworkers and friends. But I seriously doubt the novel and comic writers are inside enough to have been given the same vision. It's just a kitchen full of cooks, each whipping up their own recipe.
    As for complications, Rey finding out who her parents are is a hell of a lot less complicated than her being no one. And being Luke's daughter is a hell of a lot less complicated than her being a Solo or Kenobi. The thing about deep intricate plots, the simplistic viewer only sees the journey from point a to point b. Now, we can get from point a to point b with a complex plot or a pointless plot. The simplistic viewers aren't going to be following the story anyway, just the bright shinies. It doesn't matter to them if the path from point a to point b is masterful or nonsensical, but it matters to us who need more from it than Bugs & Daffy. There's no law that says good feasible stories have to give up the bright shinies.

    the fact that Daisy Ridley said that she thought it was obvious who her parents were in the original tells me that it has to be somebody that we know. I think she needs to be a Skywalker. I hope she is Luke's daughter. I know a lot of people say that that would be lazy this and and what not but I think that's the wrong way to look at it. Being Luke's daughter would be the logical thing to do. these episodes being Skywalker trilogy means you need to bring in the next generation of Skywalkers period I get that kylo Ren is a Skywalker but Daisy is much more the main character therefore she should be a Skywalker as well. I'd be totally fine with her being Han and Leia's daughter but I think being Luke's daughter would have much more of an impact and do much more for this movies themselves. We get to see a relationship that we never had with Anakin, Darth Vader comma and Luke. Ray has the potential to be one of the strongest Jedi, like her father before her. giving us the strongest Jedis fighting side-by-side. again something Luke had missed out on when he was a young adult. the one positive of being Han and Leia's child would be that Rey and kylo would be brother and sister and I think that dynamic going up against each other stronger than cousins battling. although I think that would work as well for the simple fact that it's family against family.

  • @KevTCC

    A reasonable theory but it doesn't make sense with how much of a big deal TFA made about her identity. Everyone was concerned about who she was and that information was hidden from us in such a way as to yell at us "We're not telling you who she is yet." When Maze asked and the scene cut is the example that comes to mind immediately.
    She has to have some significant identity because they went out of their way to show us that they were hiding that identity from us. If she really was to be a nobody who just made her self strong then they would have left that dialog out or they would have shown the answer "I don't know.."
    Further a staple in Star Wars is that the bad things that happen are often initiated by the good characters. IE Obi Wan training Anakin "You'll be the death of me." "Don't say that Master." and Bobba Fet being set off by Obi Wan as well.
    It would make sense that something about Rey will be tied back to some action of Obi Wan.

    • @thorskywalker

      Did the movie make that big of a deal about her identity? Or did it show a clip of someone abandoning her on Jakku and then in the very next seen our new old, wise Yoda like character tells her that "whoever they are, they're never coming back"?
      Was that maybe supposed to be a big clue that her parents are not relevant to the story? That maybe whatever is ahead of her is more important than what is behind....

    I personally think that the title, "The Force Awakens" is a clear message that the The Force has some kind of collective conscious and has taken upon itself to balance out life energy by creating another Chosen One. Remember that Anakin, who is The Chosen One do no more than have keenly alert senses enough to pilot a racer (and not even that good in his previous race loses). Likewise Rey would not know of her inner powers. Both smart and crafty, both born to seemingly to planets that didn't have Force recognizing systems actively monitoring children (side note, some children in the Star Wars Universe are unfound by the Jedi Order, not training them at an early age and end up becoming Sith. Darth Maul's mother gave him to Sidious, not the Jedi.) The key I think is that the force needs to equalize itself. When Qui-Gon says, " He is the Chosen One, he will bring balance." He refers to a prophecy . It is said that Anakin will bring balance just doesn't say how. The corrupt evil that had taken a 1000yrs to unbind the balance was so strong that it would take more than Anakin, his children and grandchild to bring the Darkside to balance hence another Chosen One. Even Neo wasn't he first in The Matrix.

  • @ukvol1

    I agree. The more complex the theory, the less likely Disney would use it. The easiest would be if Rey was, well, Rey. Second easiest would be if she was a Skywalker or Solo. Then it gets considerably more complex. I don't think Disney wants to spend that much time in the movie explaining things. How much is too much time? Your guess is as good as mine. Personally, I don't think they'll spend more than 15 minutes worth of explanation. Then, any other part of the explanations needed will be worked into the film as part of the overall plot, with small "reveals" along the way. I would be totally cool with some of the more exotic theories, but, as I said, I think they're less likely for sure.

    At this stage I do believe Rey is Luke's daughter, or at least connected to her in a major way...either through blood, or some weird force connection. The first thing that people often say to this is why did Luke leave her, or why didn't Han and/or Leia recognise her, or if Luke thought she was dead, wouldn't the strong Skywalker force usage allow him to know she was alive.
    Well, my thought is more that if she is Luke's daughter, he believes her dead...and as for not detecting her...Anakin/Darth Vader was inches away from Leia and still never picked up on her being his daughter and she is just as much a Skywalker as Luke.
    Now, why the strong connection to Luke...the obvious is the lightsaber, and probably the thing that would make many believe she is a Skywalker...but for me, the connection to Luke is shown mostly when Kylo is trying to search her mind for the map...and she has seen it...but instead he sees the island where Luke is, something Rey should not have known. There is also the fact that R2 finally finds the rest of the map and wakes up at the same time that Rey actually gets close to where he is...but that can probably be explained away.
    Oh, and they never have to go into any great detail of Rey's mother...we didn't find out who Luke's mother was until the prequels came out, and knowing Obi Wan knew his father closely, that he would have known the identity of his mother.
    With all that being said, will I be disappointed if she isn't Luke's daughter?..maybe a little, but I am sure I am going to love whatever they come up with!

      was just talking to my brother about all this, like literally right now... he's into star wars big time too, at one point more than me, as he read a lot, had a ton of comics, etc...but he stays within the story, doesnt go off and theorize and talk to others about it, like me/us... anyway... we somehow got to the "will rey and ren/ben ever break bread, bone, and have a kid?"...they have some connection, people think that Ren can't be redeemed, people think Rey will go Dark, who knows...BUT... if somehow they make it happen, and pull it off and they wind up together... i can see them going into the next trilogy with something LIKE the Yuuzahn(?) Vong, this crazy alien race or threat or whatever, that is going to wipe out the whole galaxy, is force resistant, and finally only the child of Rey/Ren has enough Force power to wield it in a way that the Vong finally succumb to it... PLUS, if they are going Grey for sure, and accepting both sides of the force in these new movies, both light and dark, the child of those 2, WITH skywalker blood in him too, would, i'd say, be the most pwoerful force user ever for real, even more than luke... anyway, i know it's WAYYY out there, but the reason i even say it here, is because i think that Rey's origin might have a HUGE impact on what she does with/to Kylo Ren, AND any offspring will be tremendously important in the next trilogy (which i think we KONW they will do, after all, there's $$$$$$$ to be made!)

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому +3

      I agree with the both of you. If "Reylo" does happen and they end up having a child... that's going to be one hell of a powerful child. Also the next trilogy has to have a different kind of threat than just 'someone trying to take over the galaxy'. I'd have to imagine The First Order will be defeated at the end of this trilogy... so it'd be terrible when the new trilogy comes out if a new "Empire" tries to come about again. THAT would be lazy storytelling. I think the next trilogy (or whatever happens in the future of Star Wars) is something that has to threaten the galaxy or life itself. Maybe there's something crazy that exists out in the Unknown Regions or a threat emerges from beyond their galaxy.

    • @masterrserch3971
      @masterrserch3971 7 років тому

      right, and that's why i think the Yuzaahn Vong (i should really stop being lazy and get the right spelling of them)...because it's not like just an army, or some all powerful being...it's a whole new race, that has a great back story, what with the Force pretty much "kicking them out" of their will, their disdain for technology, and destroying all droids and ships and stuff...their use of biotechnology, and their ships and stuff kinda resembling the chitauri in avengers (as i write that, i think THAT comparison may be why we don't see them on screen), and overall, their brutal nature, and desire to not just "rule the galaxy," but to purge it of the life that currently inhabits it, so they can settle in, especially after their brutality pretty much ravaged their world and way of being and that's why they're there... doesnt necessarily have to be THEM to a "T," but could be some variation of them, inspired by Legends.... they can also tie it in nicely with the "presence of immense power" that Sidious felt in the outer/unknown region, and how he wanted to see if it was a threat, an ally, or someone he can dominate and use for himself and consume THEIR power. However, cuz i am THOROUGH and love the sound of my hands typing (as opposed to my own voice, as it's said lol), is that that could in essence make Palpatine look like the GOOD GUY after all this time, as he would have been drawn to that power, and ramping up to protect HIS GALAXY from invasion and extinction! Im sure a group of talented writers can of course get around this somehow....

  • @jd6094
    @jd6094 7 років тому +1

    Very good and sound reasoning. However, a few things to point out I must.
    > Star Wars is a trilogy and a saga. As such, to change the pattern for the last three would destroy that. It is the story of the Skywalkers, and each part of the trilogy centers on a generation of the Skywalkers. Therefore, Rey is a Skywalker and the main protagonist of the last three episodes. I don't think even Di$ney would dare break the fundamental storyline...although on second thought... And if they do change the foundation of the trilogy, it isn't a true trilogy any longer.
    > Think about it... three protagonists, each being the alleged chosen one (well Rey will be), each living their youth on a desert planet and each strong with the force. The force is strong in Rey not because she is a nobody but because she is a Skywalker.
    > If Rey's parents were nobodies, why not reveal that in TFA? And if Daisey Ridley says the identity of her parents should be easy to figure out, that means they are known characters. How can anyone figure out the identity of unidentified nobodies.
    > In the first two parts of the trilogy, a parent of the protagonist is a strong part of the storyline. Maybe Luke is going to end the Jedi. Rey rights the wrong of the parent and defeats evil by convincing Luke to do otherwise; just as Luke convinced Darth Vader he had good in him and Vader/Anakin then disposed of the emperor and came back to the light. In the first three, Anakin's mother and her torture and death was his first encounter with hatred and revenge, and his first and maybe biggest step toward the darkside. There is a strong parent-child connection in the first two parts of the trilogy, why not the third?
    > If Luke is Rey's father, he wasn't necessarily the one who left her. She may have been born on the planet and left in the care of the mother or other caretakers. Luke knows that he, now the last Jedi is hunted and must separate himself from his daughter at all costs. Who left the and why can have a number of answers.
    Anyway, just my opinion. Wherever they take the story, they already have. It's isn't a question of what I prefer to see, but what I believe the Star Wars Trilogy Saga is all about. Three generations of Skywalkers who will ultimately defeat the purveyors of the dark side and bring peace to the galaxy. Thanks!

    my question is what is the point of the hints and the forceback and all this nonsense if her parents are random. disney isnt stupid enough to believe, having created the movie they did, that no one would speculate about it. they knew they were putting hints in the movie they knew they were creating a mystery about her parents. the mystery has to have a pay off and must be people that the audience has seen. this isnt a pay off for anyone like literally no one. its like giving a giant middle finger to 95% of fans most of them had guesses of their own.
    its just storytelling 101. if youre creating a mystery you have to have a pay off. you dont write a murder mystery and then reveal the murderer to be someone who was never introduced into the story. you have made the fans curious so its your job as a writer to deliver on that curiosity. i highly doubt that JJ "king of the mystery box" abrams is going to take a dump on his beloved mystery box by pretty much implying that whats inside the mystery box doesnt matter. seriously go watch his ted talk about "the mystery box" and you'll see why "the parents dont matter" is unlikely.

    • @thorskywalker

      A mystery that ends up being the most obvious answer (she's a Skywalker) is a horrible mystery and a pointless one at that. Why go through all the trouble and runaround just to say in the end "you were all right, she's a Skywalker". When I imply she's no one... I'm implying she's something new to the Star Wars Universe, and a way for Disney to do something new to make it their own. She will have an explanation and backstory, but it won't be so steeped in Lore that only a small percentage of the fan base get it.

    • @Ani0227
      @Ani0227 7 років тому +1

      sorry in advance for the long post. honestly i prefer predictable to an unanswerable mystery. especially since daisy said that once you answer the first part it opens up a whole other set of questions. i think luke being the father will just open up more questions about the mother in particular. and JJ said that he wanted something mothers and daughters could share in the same way fathers and sons shared the OT so i expect the mother to be a big part of this. however i honestly am more interested in the "how" than the "who". lets say the first scene in TLJ luke says "rey its me. im your father." and we get that out of the way quickly. it doesnt just end there. this is the part im interested in. why? how? whos the mother? why did you abandon her? is the mother evil? did she abandon rey? is snoke involved? did han leave rey on jakku? why unkar plutt? how is the falcon involved? theres so much to answer that luke being the father feels like such a minor part of the mystery. the rest of this mystery is a mess and i sincerely have no earthly clue what could be the answer to any of these.
      i also like that in making rey lukes daughter they are exploring different kinds of families and the relationship betweens parents (or surrogate parents) and their children. rey's story being about her finding her personal history. her parents and the jedi culture she was born into. the habits, similarities and abilities she shares with her family, anakin, luke, leia and kylo. this is what she's seeking. a sense of belonging. being around people who share her biology might make it easier for her to connect hence why she never made too many friends on jakku. with finn its about embracing the differences in family. the fact that they all come from different places. "the found families". poe as the big brother, leia as the mother and han and presumably luke as the fathers and what they can all teach him and how he can grow in different ways by being around them. with kylo ren its somewhere in between. he connects with some blood relatives(like anakin) because of his similarities to them but not with others (like han) and will choose "found family" over the relatives he doesnt connect with (like snoke) however snoke is more like an abusive parent who he is emotionally dependent on.

    I am not a fan of the Rey Skywalker for many reasons, one of them is the fact that if she is a Skywalker, two of the main characters (Rey and Kylo) would be Skywalkers, and it gives the impression that only the Skywalkers matter, as if the protagonist has to be a Skywalker and if a character is not from that family, she/he's not worth being an important character (that's just my opinion, also sorry if it didn't make sense). In both the original trilogy and the prequels, the main characters are Skywalkers (which is normal) and I know that it's supposed to be the Skywalker saga but I would like to see something new as for the protagonist while still following the Skywalkers as important characters as well. If she's a Skywalker, i'll be dissapointed but they know what they're doing.

    Being a Skywalker would not take away from who Rey is or her abilities to survive what she has went through. And being a Skywalker would not mean her skills were automatically a given. Luke struggled to control The Force and his skills were not a given, he had to be trained and was still erratic using it. So her being a Skywalker would not ensure her being able to survive on Jakku, that survival is a skill she learned on her own no thanks to The Force. The Force was dormant inside of her just like it was in Luke because she did not realize she had it and neither did he. Once they realized it, then they were able to grasp it and begin to use it. It may be stronger in her because she has not had to deal with the dark evils of the dark side so at this point she is pure and why she is stronger at this initial stage than Luke was, her dad was not Vader so the pull to the dark side is not there as strong. Where Luke had Daddy issues and Yoda issues for dark and light, she has only light at the moment and her experience with the dark side is just purely evil from the destruction of plants to the "death" of Han, there is no draw to the dark side at this point. When Ren had her in the room questioning her he was telling her " Your so lonely, so afraid to leave. At night desperate to sleep, you imagine an ocean, I see it I see the island" She had never seen an island or an ocean but at the end of the movie we see Rey find Luke on an island in an ocean.... And he has been tormented from his failures, lonely, afraid to leave, desperate to sleep. So was Rey channeling Luke and Ren seeing Luke's pain and location without realizing it? Rey being a Skywalker may be too easy generally speaking but the story of her journey and what lead up to her being on Jakku would be one to tell. All that being said, I do not think she is a Skywalker though, I think Leia would sense that. But she could have been a student that survived and was hidden... So many options, I love it...

    As a kid I remember Yoda and Ben worrying about Luke "turning to the dark side like your father" and I thought "Dark Side" meant "Wicked cool Vader Suit". It was too abstract of a concept for me to understand, and honestly when I grew up enough to realize it just meant "too much dark force usage and making mean decisions" I was kind of disappointed. After seeing Episode I, I had to explain everything we had just watched to my friend's 35 year old girlfriend. So I dunno... complicated MIGHT happen. Nah, Luke's the dad. :)

    Rey's not a Skywalker or a Solo. The Force Awakens and the canonized materials have already debunked any possibility of that. However, I do think there's something about Rey's lineage. She could be from an Imperial Dark Side family. But anyway, she could also be a random, which is not so bad. Great video.

    Sadly there is major flaw with the whole basis of your argument here. George Lucas drafted this story decades ago. Kathleen Kennedy came aboard as he was sales pitching the draft to Disney and Michael Ardnt did the first screen play to proove proof of concept to Disney. JJ Abrams only modified bits of it with Lawrence Kasdan once he got on board, at its core though the story always remained Lucas'. Lucas's big complaint about Ep 7 was it was a copy of IV, not that they changed the core characters. Anyways Kathleen was hired since she was a personal friend of Lucas and he knew she'd follow the core of his drafts, even if she had to change minor details of them because of Disney or any Director.
    So the original idea for Rey was never a strong female lead, it was always the conclusion to the Skywalker family saga and the conclusion of the prophecy of the Chosen One. Lucas based Star Wars upon stories like Dune and King Arthur which are both family sagas. Sure John Carter of Mars and Flash Gordon got thrown in and Hidden Fortress, but the protagonist's journeys have always been tied to the first two mentioned.
    Rey will be related to someone, as long as Lucasfilm doesn't drastically alter Lucas's drafts. My bet is Luke, though I see Palpatine or Snoke as other contenders (not Kenobi or Han/Leia though) either solely or shared with Luke. Thematically, I think it works best if she's both a Skywalker and another known bloodline too.
    I personally see Vader more akin to Uther Pendragon, Luke more akin to Paul Atreides, Kylo as Mordred, and Rey as a mash-up of Leto II & Ghanima Atreides. Leia is more of an Alia Atreides to me. I'm personally hoping Rey's mother is Mara Jade, but I'm expecting to get a more Morgan Le Fay type character instead (though Mara could easily be rewritten that way with little actual changes to her character from legends). I'm not saying that they'll follow all the paths of these characters, just that thematically there are parallels.
    Rey isn't a nobody, she just believed she was one. This trilogy wasn't penned by Kathleen Kennedy for the sake of creating a strong female character, it was penned by Lucas concluding his story and bowing out. He just let Kathleen play a bit with his strong female character who is related to someone, most likely Luke though I see her being a Palpatine also as a possibility. Her being related to Snoke is the wild card based on what they do with him in 8 and 9. Rey being a girl was simply likely because Lucas had a new baby girl when this was happening, plus he had 2 adopted daughters as well... and he knew Kathleen Kennedy would love to make a strong female character but she, being a friend, would also honor his story. The stories Kathleen can do what ever the heck she wants with are the Anthology films, like Rogue One.

      Right because Rey can't be a character all her own and Kylo be the Skywalker in the saga. The story always has to be about Luke. We can't love Rey as her own character apart from the Skywalker family. If she's the main
      Protagonist than she has to be Luke's because then that makes him once again the central focus of the story. I'm sorry I don't agree with your statement about her being a Skywalker. It's like your saying, "yeah I love Rey! Now how does she relate to Luke because he's the main character of the saga and that can't ever change." It can change and I'm sorry but Kylo is the last Skywalker and is just as important a character as Rey making it still a Skywalker story. I'm happier if she is Rey Random, and remains a unique and intriguing character all her own. If she's a Skywalker I'm ok but it's very boring and predictable story then with very low stakes. If she is I'm not expecting much from this trilogy because then it's just a replay of the original as many have already accused it of being and that's sad. I respect you but I respectfully agree to disagree.

      The story is not about Luke. It's about Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Luke's entire character revolves around his father. How to live up to his father's Jedi legacy and how to avoid the evil path of Darth Vader. That's why people want Rey to be a Skywalker. Because it fits the family theme started with Luke and Anakin.
      It also prevents people from accusing Rey of being a Mary Sue.

      I don't think Rey is a Mary Sue if she's not a Skywalker, and you just proved my argument but twisted it from Luke to Anakin/Vader. "Rey is great, but how does she relate to Anakin and Luke?" I'm sorry like I said agree to disagree. I just don't see the story that way. I see Kylo as being the main Skywalker in the story. Solo or not his mom is a Skywalker. I also see him as a huge parallel to both Luke and especially Anakin. Do they really need another Skywalker ? I'm not being disrespectful towards anyone for their view of the story I promise. I'd like for her to be her own persona apart from the Skywalker family. That's just my wish and apparently the wish of millions of other fans as well. There are many who feel the way you do also and that's ok. Hey you never know they might make her his long lost kid that will take up so much screen time explaining that we don't have more than 10 minutes of all the other characters to explain how that happened lol I'm sorry I just don't see her being a Skywalker. You're entitled to your opinion though and if she is I'm happy for Luke and for you and the millions of fans out there who think that will be a good story. If (and that's a HUGE IF!) that happens I'll be one of the disappointed fans out there. No matter who she is in the end there's going to be a lot of people upset by it, right? JJ Mr. Abrams, Sir you built that mystery box all WRONG! And way way to big lol good luck to you I hope you have a good week 😊👍🏻

    I honestly don't have much sympathy for Rey at the moment, she seems too shallow. I just don't like the idea of her being too good at everything for no particular reason because to me, all great characters have both strengths *and* weaknesses. This is what makes a character believable and relatable to the general audience regardless of gender, race, or whatever. As for her being a completely new and original character, I'm absolutely fine with that! She just doesn't have to be good at everything to be a great character.

      ***** if you read my comment you'd know I said "at the moment" which means I'm very open to her character development in the upcoming stories.
      Luke in ANH was not good at everything. He required assistance in order to succeed. Obi-wan had to tell him what to do with an unexpected come back from Han Solo otherwise he would have failed and died with the rebellion over Yavin IV.
      You're supposed to show a characters potential in the first movie and have them learn what they're capable of. Their great moments are meant to be saved for their developed future to show how they've risen above. My point is, potential and outcome are two very different things.
      I didn't say she was without fault, I said she has too many strengths. She's able to do more than a believable character can, it's called being human when you're good at some things but also bad at others. My point has nothing to do with her accepting her own future.
      I've also never made any accusations about Rey and Anakin, I'm focusing on the alleged similarities between her and Luke, not Anakin.
      You're answering things I haven't even said, don't put words into peoples mouths and expect to be right. Now I suggest less kindly, you shut up.

    I don't think it would be a complex thing if it was revealed that Rey is for example Palpatine's granddaughter. Everyone knows who Palpatine/Sidious was, and in the movie it's usually explained for another time in the context that Rey questions this and has only heard "stories" about this person. In TFA there is heavy references to Darth Vader constantly, what's the logic behind talking about Darth Vader if the audience wouldn't get it? because people get it, the Star Wars characters are very famous and your avarage watcher knows them.. Also if the movies connect, it would mean more new watchers would come back to the old movies, some maybe rewatch them.

  • @bobscomix

    and as in "WE DON'T HAVE ANY IDEAS" What you don't get is that making her NOT be a Skywalker makes her less interesting in that it makes her one dimensional. Let me explain. The most compelling aspect of Star Wars for me, and what DIFFERENTIATED it from every other Sci Fi yarn was it's attention to interpersonal relationships and FAMILY.Also, it makes characters like Luke Skywalker more vulnerable and has sonething to LOSE in having a daughter.
    Not to mention character tension between Rey and luke. Think about it. If luke left Rey behind for whatever reason, it would make a really compelling drama between these two characters.
    Now, I'm not in the Skywalker or bust camp, but what irritates me the most is that so much intentional mystery, intrigue and emphasis was placed on Rey's parentage in The Force Awakens, that one would logically assume that her back story is an important thread linking the old and the new. one that we can care about. To set up all of this mystery to make her related to Joe nerfherder is disingenuous, lame, and the biggest carrot and the stick in the history if film.
    So, do I think she will be a Skywalker? no. but not for the reasons you mentioned. Well, maybe one. cash. Disney wants to make money and leave options open to create more merchandise and spinoffs, cartoons, books etc. got that reason I understand. for the reasons that count, I dont.

    The point has been made before that if Rey is either not related to some powerful force user, or we just don't learn of who they are, then it makes for a stronger message to the younglings in the audience. The message being that she can be this powerful, important, relevant, and exciting regardless of her lineage. That way every kid recognizes that they have unlimited potential and their futures are not already mapped out, with boundaries, from birth.

    As a fan of the Trilogy who has boxes of original toys still in their boxes for 40 years almost, I hope her parents are exactly who you described them as. The no one of importance take is original yet mirrors Anakin's own story of being from no one. Disney also knows how to find value in characters by allowing viewers to see themselves in each character. Remember the original Luke was no one also. My daughter would not be able to connect with a character whose parents are famous throughout the world, but she can connect with a character whose parents were Imperials who were apart of the outpost or refugees. Heck, even the miracle force baby makes more sense than another Skywalker or Solo.

    Cause and effect. Ben Solo was separated from his twin "Rey" causing his "separation anxiety" thus his emotional instability. (its also why his metal probe backfired.)

    I've been a Star Wars nerd as of day one, I was a kid in the late seventies/early eighties and grew up with the same level of interest as yours, had all the toys, the early bird promis card in 78 and have spent the last 40 years absorbing all the legend, lore and cannon history, and I agree with you, completely! Obviously, in my generation, fans were never disappointed with something like who someone's parents were, in fact, we didn't want to believe the reveal of Luke's parentage in Empire and where shocked when Yoda confirmed it three years later in Jedi. I think your observations are dead on!! I do however think Luke knows her or OF her at least. The fans of today are different than those of my generation, as we lived to enjoy what was, rather than live to speculate what might be. Do you notice nobody seems to question Finn's parantege? At least, not loudly. I think Ray and Finn's connection is NOT an accident, much like Aniken and Obi Wan's wasn't either. Maz Kinada is also VERY important, why did she ask Han "who's the girl?" and why did the camera cut there, we were not made privi to that convo, so what dis Han tell her, or what does he know? Why did Kylo Ren freak out when the lutenant said "a girl helped him" ..? Perhaps everyone knows who she is and the arch of this story will be her discovery of who she is and why everyone knows her. Her parents may not be relevant, you're right, but, Rey is. Qui Gon wasn't a Skywalker, but, he was an amazing Jedi, as was Obi Wan, Mace Windu and Yoda, all not Skywalkers, but equally important. I'm interested to see how this plays out.

Thus, giving him the means, motive, and opportunity to leave her on Jaku and way from Skywalker. Why in the movie she didn't reconginze him, after time, looks change.

    I disagree that her being from a known family line will lessen her strength or the perception of her strength in fans eyes. Placing her in a Jedi family line will strengthen the story of Ray from which means more films and more money. If she is from no family then her history ends and so does possible revenue from those films. The very fact that her origin is asked about within the film itself should be a sign to us viewers that her origin is important and will unlikely be ordinary.

    Thor Skywalker: I am of the opinion that she is Lukes daughter. Just my personal opinion.
    What I want to ask you is how you, a self proclaimed lover of all things Star Wars, can have any love for this new trilogy. For whatever reason, and I don't care why, the entire book universe was disregarded. Yet they have used many of the ideas within the books. Second, lightsabers do not call out to people, specially when they were lost in a gas giant many years ago. Third, turning a planet into a death star weapon was ridiculous! And so was the scene where all those planets were destroyed. Rey, no matter who she is, could not have fought and almost defeated Kilo. Wounded or not. I could go on, and on .............and on!
    I love Star Wars. I love the first 6 movies and the stories in the novels that came after. Well, most of them. But I cannot stand the last film. It was awful in so many ways. I think that your point about how "Star Wars isn't for the hardcore fans" is, by far, your most valid one, and by itself, could both carry this video, and explain many other aspects of the SW universe and its development.
    I also feel that your arguments in favor of Rey's parents being unknowns, are perfectly reasonable. I can never pronounce ANY argument to be infallible, since logic can be overwritten by the whims of Disney and JJ Abrams, but your reasonings are perfectly sound, particularly regarding the revelations in Rey's pre-TFW appearances, and how preoccupation with her ancestry could overshadow her accomplishments.
    Having said that, I'd assert two things. First, that while you worry about Rey's ancestry invalidating her strengths somehow, many fans may be of the opinion that a certain kind of origin story is needed to *explain* them somehow. After all, what Rey's accomplished is still pretty remarkable, maybe even stretching credulity. And with the only parallel sort of character development being someone like Anakin or one of the other Jedi characters, viewers may be naturally primed to look in that direction. "Blood never lies" may not be a very modern or democratic concept, but it's driven much of Star Wars storytelling for two generations.
    Also, we mustn't forget that Rey's ancestry could potentially open up critical *story possibilities* that might otherwise not materialize. For example, your own theory that Rey's origin on Jakku is the key, leads us towards exploring the planet's history and importance, and possibly, a final showdown there. The Kenobi and Skywalker theories could open up issues of Rey coping with a legacy that's bigger than she is. Ditto my favorite, the Palpatine theory, which not only does that, but brings up the issue of a "spawn of evil" who may or may not want the job, may be treated unfairly, and so on. So there are some reasons to tie Rey into the story through ancestry.

    • @thorskywalker
      @thorskywalker  7 років тому

      Excellent points. However I almost think you need a better explanation for some of the things Rey did (mainly the reversal of the mind probe on Kylo Ren and the ability to 'channel the Force' at the end of her duel with Kylo) than just being a Skywalker. Yes, Anakin as a boy was already an incredible pilot that could compete in pod racing (the only human that could do it) and he 'lucked' into blowing up the droid control ship at the end of Episode I... and Luke was able to blow up the death star with a 'lucky' shot with like only ten minutes of training from Obi-Wan... but what Rey does goes above and beyond any of that. Not even trained do we ever see Luke or Anakin channel the Force or become possessed by it, whatever truly happened there, yet Rey was able to do that with no apparent training of any kind.
      You're also right that Rey's ancestry could open up some really new and cool story possibilities... and I could be dead wrong, and maybe Disney/Lucasfilm gives their audience the benefit of the doubt and we'll get a little more 'story heavy' with these next two movies. I certainly hope they do but I don't think they'll go too far with it.

    as far as i am concerned , this is the best option about the all " rey parents " situation : everyone would be desapointed otherwise , but this is , simple , elegant , and add something more to the character

    I think we have already been told who she is. Everyone glosses over the fact that pretty much every one of the flight helmets from Ep 1-6 has fairly unique patterns on them. The Helmet that Rey has on Jakku is the same as Lukes old Red 3 helmet. It likely IS Lukes helmet, meaning she likely IS Lukes daughter.

    I like what you've said and I never thought of how Rey being related to Luke or Obi Wan taking away what's been established of her from her learning to be strong or self sufficient on her own. And i think I'll love Rey more as a character if it turns out her parents aren't relevant to the story or not related to anyone we know
