The thing is that many of the army books in 4th are the actual army books in 5th WHFB and the 4th and 5th rules are so similar all their books / supplements are interchangeable. And you mention expensive, just look at the army book prices and then drop your jaw at say the magic box expansions for 4th.

Love it, I hope your journey goes well, I would recommend that you try 6th with no add on rules from other editions until you get the hang of it. Then once you are comfortable you can add in rules you think are necessary etc but if you do it from the start you'll never really get a true feel for 6th (the importance of charging to go first, the importance of trying to wipe out the front rank so there are less strikes back, the importance of heroes to bolster units) Step up changes this considerably!

@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming i also highly recommended KINGS OF WAR they had 3rd edition release last year and is very much like Warhammer Fantasy. Models are fantastic and game is easy 😊. www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/kings-of-war-3rd-edition/. Also the prices for boxsets are fantastic. Give it a look and see what you think. As collecting Warhammer is very expensive.
On a 2nd Note they are bringing the Old World back to Games Workshop and the model concepts look amazing.
I currently own Wood Elfs and Dwarfs for warhammer fantasy. Never painted as they kept updating the editions (one of the reasons why i stopped collecting), i felt like you would master one rule set and then they land another edition.
If restrictions ever get taken away ill happily bring them down for you.

7th tidied up escaping, skirmishers, implemented a lot of stuff that was errata'd in 6th, added free reform after combat.

    • @TheBattlinBarrowGaming

Core rules wise there is not much difference really. The big difference is that 4th and 5th edition each had their own seperate magic supplements that are not compatible with each other. I thought I got the 5th edition one but turned out it was the 4th (theres a video on the channel).
Apart from that any real major difference was in teh army books themselves I guess.

If I was going to group the editions into "eras", I'd say that 6th and 7th are far closer one-another than 5th and 6th.
6th was a complete rule re-set (in that none of the books from 5th were valid in 6th). 4th books still worked in 5th, and 6th still worked in 7th (and even 8th!).

I'm a year late, but have exactly the same motivations as you. There's something that's always intrigued me with childish joy about WFB that 40k and AoS just don't bring. The only other game which does the same is Bloodbowl. I did some eBay sniping last month to get 50+ Night Goblins, they're meant to pair with Orks but I've never been a fan of Orks, so a vast army of little guys it is!

Ngl 4th edition magic is better due to the fact 4th/5th the magic phase is last phase in the turn. In 5th you cast spells on your own turn so you can’t easily use magic to set yourself up.
4th edition this isn’t a problem as you can cast in enemy’s turn too, so use the magic you need then to set yourself up in your imminent magic phase.

I’ve bought up tons of battle masters for orcs, chaos, and empire units. Try to stick to £1 a mini for rank and file and double that for cavalry.
Also- Old Glory 25s has great figures in their Wars Of Religion range for empire. And their Italian Wars range is pretty good for infantry. They have an extensive range of Landsknecht. Not the best looking sculpts individually, but en masse they look great. They have very dynamic poses. Stay away from Old Glory cavalry as they’re a little too small to stand beside other manufacturers.
Perry miniatures can fill your need for a lot of Empire and Bretonian figures.

step up rule would completely imbalance some 6th edition elite units. Those units relied on getting the charge or their high initiative to fight first, slay and therefore not be slain. You are giving a lot of power to things like dwarfs, vampires; which were very powerful already.
6th has a much better magic phase and psychology rules. You arent penalised as much for taking regiment units.

I played 5th-8th (the bitter end) and I was around during 4th. Late 4th is a great game. 5th your army is just chaff; if you like rank and flank its not for you. 6th IMO is the best edition made by GW. Every army got a book except chaos dwarfs (if you want to play CW play 4th). Every book had none standard ways to make a army in the back. Everything was very well balanced as long as you leave out the 2nd release of the dwarf book (its 7th). 7th was the worst version of the game, whatever the new book was won. 8th with Swiss Comp and none end times material was good but not every army had a book so there were some d tier factions. Also imo it became hero hammer when they said 50% of your army could be lords. There are only 3 options imo, 6th, late 4th or early 8th comped

@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming i didn't really get into it cause it was getting long. A big difference between 6th in 8th, is 8th was a lot more deadly because everything got to attack. In 6th blocks dont really get chewed up. They lose combat, fail leadership and get run down (more like actual history). In 8th you had big hordes and they'd only ever break if they lost >75% of the unit.
Also one downside of 6th is there were no big beasts. Cannons were to deadly, so any hero outside a unit and monsters got blasted off the table. That got a little bit more balanced in 8th. 4th/5th and AoS is all about big monsters

@@Flamethrower1942 That's interesting to hear. I suppose 40K has been their most popular game for a long tome.

I am also now thinking why restrict myself to one edition? I love 5ths hero centric rules ...

Go for 6ed, its the most fun, diverse, balanced, and easy to learn. Good amount of units with very little redundancy. Or even 7ed, after, if you want more unit options.
Stay FAR away from 8ed, it legit killed the game with how bad it is. Unbalanced, unfun meta with cannons vs fodder, if your army has no range or little, better play something else. Pray to god you dont enjoy a 6ed faction, because you wont get any support for it in 8ed.

Yeah 8 didnt appeal to me at all really. I went for 5th / 6th era as I love the look of the game style wise back then and both sets of rules appealed to me.

I did notice 40k was for younger people; Fantasy was for older people. This was typically true due to the difference in complexity, but also the rank and file and more classical nature of Fantasy. It's just a more serious, grounded game. I think this is why you also tended to get more childish gamers for 40k, which tends to mean younger people. I find myself liking the rank and file idea more, and hope they bring back some Old World soon. I'm 26, no longer 12. Big difference. Key difference might be that studies and personality science indicate that people get more conservative and traditional around age 26 onwards, which might imply a more innate connection to something like Fantasy over 40k. Fantasy is also quite difficult when you're 12, and since you're innately going against older men, it's not a great idea; thus, I recall almost everybody my age playing 40k. Of course, painting Fantasy for the sake of it was common, but not the game itself. I recall only a handful of players around my age, and I know for a fact they were more conservative in nature and high IQ types (which makes sense). Such types tend to play more than paint. Rare to see great overlap here. Common with females was Vampires (which also makes some sense), though I never saw a single woman ever play the game itself: only paint. The only option I noticed for more Right-wing types in 40k was -- not so shockingly -- the Imperial Guard (aka the military). Strangely, the Armymen were not popular in a wargame, but not strangely, we're talking about a 21st-century sci-fi game for a younger gamer: he wants monsters and space elves, not boring tanks. The only people I knew with such tanks were 35-year-old men, and they clearly very much liked all things military (as is typical in the hobby). Anyway, long story short... the older I get, the more I like Fantasy and the more classical armies of GW. I still love Orks and other madness, though! (I am praying they bring back Fantasy in 2023 with Old World so that I can create an army again.)
