    It seems that you work diligently, but you do not promote the idea that every single second not spent working is wasted. You're a bright spot on academic UA-cam! I would love more videos like this and anything else you come up with. Also, it is wonderful that your obsidian is a source of inspiration. I feel the same way, even though my vault is still infantile. Thanks for posting; I love your videos!

      I think I will always feel like my vault is infantile :P There's always more to take note of! Thanks for your words of encouragement 😊

    It is the first time I see a PhD candidate in Theatre on UA-cam. I'm Brazilian and graduated in Theatre here and now I am doing my master's in Theatre and Performance Studies. It was so nice to watch your vlog. I feel less alone. English is not my first language so I apologize for some mistakes.

      Yes. I am doing my master's degree at the University of São Paulo (USP). It is the largest university in Brazil. It has been a great experience.

    I am currently finishing my theatre undergrad and going to be doing a masters in October in theatre. It is so nice to actually see theatre academics on this platform make videos about phd's and stuff as I want to do a phd too. thank you for making these videos and giving an insight that can help me and other creatives!

    Your outlook on your routine is very reassuring. Feels like that there is an unsaid guilt of not doing constant phd work 9-5 daily.

    I loved this video! We have a very similar work routine. I also start work at 7am because I'm more productive and alert in the morning. That means that I usually get 3-5 hours of PhD work in the morning and I get to have the afternoons for myself. Sometimes I'll do some PhD reading but if I'm working through writing a chapter I'll let myself rest in the afternoon, run errands and read for fun. I think seeing you have a similar routine eased my anxiety since I'm always wondering if I'm failing at productivity if I don't spend my whole day at my desk. Thank you for this!

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Рік тому

      I also used to be worried I wasn't spending enough time working on my PhD! But then I'd just be anxious all the time and get nothing done! So now I let myself have shameless time off :P

    I should really start doing a morning routine of some sort instead of being a creature of chaos until appointments kick in, lol. Let's see whether I can make that reading in the morning hting work. I just read the first chapter of 4 different books... (seemed like a fun thing to try for Medium).

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Рік тому

      I've always been tempted to do that "read a chapter" thing for UA-cam. Maybe if I think of a good enough theme or have a bunch of books I'm not sure that I want to read.

    So, sorry for late comment, how do you deal with burnout? After spring break, I was just overwelmingly burnt out, to the detriment of my grades. Its not that I'm tired of academic work, just I'm tired of stressing over academic work. This is my first semester in a research university, and before this I went to a very small community college. I never really had to stress about much in my community college and I could do academic work (mostly blogging) at my leisure.

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Рік тому +1

      I guess I don't have a totally coherent answer to this yet. But one thing would be that I manage burn out on a daily basis instead of letting it pile up. I check in with my motivation levels each day - even each hour - and if I'm feeling a bit burnt out, I'll do something else. Or I'll go work in a cafe to treat myself and give me that boost of pleasure. Or I'll work next to someone else, because I almost always find work less stressful and easier when I do it in the company of another person working. For me anyway, stress is not the same as a feeling of burnout, although they can be related. Stress I manage through systems like 'getting things done' and lessons I've learned in self-help books and therapy. In particular, offering myself self-compassion. Aka, forgiving myself when I am too burnt out to work and allowing myself a break.

    hello, love the video! i was wondering where you've found your online friend that you work together. i'm doing my MA and i could really benefit from working together with someone :)

    • @toyahbush2917
      @toyahbush2917 Рік тому

      I'm thinking the same thing! I'm an MA student too. I was commuting to the campus when I was doing the taught part of my degree, but now I feel a bit isolated working on my thesis alone. I got myself a cafe giftcard, which does encourage me to work in town or in the library... but I am still missing that camaraderie of working alongside someone

    • @morganeua
      @morganeua  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I hear you. I actually found my co-working buddy through UA-cam because they commented on my book videos and it seemed like we had a lot in common. (They will be featured in a future video, so watch out for that!) For a long time I didn't have any friends doing a PhD. Literally none. Finding community came from me putting myself out there. I reached out to other people in my year and now we have a weekly reading group together. I posted on my department's fb group and literally just said that I felt lonely and I found a co-writing partner that way. And then I started posting these UA-cam videos and all of you folks are becoming my community, too! So, keep expressing that need for graduate school friends and something will appear - maybe folks in the comments here can even connect!

      I completely agree. Refer to my reply to the original poster for how I've found friends!! But honestly, to this day, it remains difficult. Especially to find in-person PhD friends, because I don't live in the city where I study.

    Are you transgender?

    • @RileyEffective
      @RileyEffective Рік тому +3

      Why are you asking this question? Aside from it not being relevant it can be a very intrusive question for transgender people, because you are essentially asking them what kind of equipment they were born with and you are possibly exposing them to harassment and violence. If Morgan would be transgender, you could possibly put her in a position where she has to choose between outing herself or lying to remain stealth. So please don't ask people if they're trans.
