There's a major difference between the treatment of Vietnam War vets and what current vets got / get. Vietnam vets were spit on, mistreated, and totally forgotten by the system. They were called baby killers, evil, and everything else in the news and papers. Not everywhere, but in major cities and liberal areas. Southern and Midwestern states they got better treatment, but in California and places like that, it was really, really bad. It's a stark contrast, and a major improvement. Discounts were not even on their minds, and wasn't really a thing. They just wanted to be treated as normal, and wanted help with medical care, especially mental health. I appreciate your service, but I don't think you realize how good returning vets have it today compared to the time that Huey Lewis was singing about.

I come from a military family and I 100% agree with what you said. Veterans are not being taking care of and it angers me because of the sacrifice and everything they've done to fight for us. I'm from Ontario, Canada and my dad suffers from chronic pain and PTSD from being in the military and seeing that they are not doing a lot to help him and others is crazy.

Billy, I'm a big fan of Home free, but when I saw you were going to do a reaction to Huey Lewis and the News, I had to check it out. Have been a big fan of theirs forever. My Mom and Dad got married on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked.....Dec 7th 1941 starting WW2. ... So shortly after they were married he left to fight for our Country. We lost him 5years ago at the age of 94. He never talked about what he saw but we were all proud of him. Loved the song, the message and your reaction. It's so true. Thank you for your service also

Had no idea what this song was about, until now. Crazy. It's so upbeat for such a serious song. I just thought angry youth I guess. I should have realized though, because he's that Vietnam generation, like my parents are/were (Dad passed away in 04').
Anyway about being a Vet. The one's they take care of are the one's that make it a career. And stay in till retirement. Then you're well taken care of. Not saying that's right, or wrong. Just that this is how it is. I have a friend (enlisted) who did 22 years in the Navy (asked to do 2 more years when his 20 was up, because they needed people at the time).
He's well, and I mean WELL taken care of. They've always made sure he's had a job (he works at the Naval Station Newport RI), VA support for him and his whole family (wife and 2 adult autistic sons, one who is in a home), and a decent pension. He feels he'd be dead, or an addict by now if he didn't join, because that's what happened to all his friends where he grew up (Saugus MA area).
They also took great care of my friend's father before he passed. He was a Navy diver, and got seriously injured (lost a leg). They even built him a wheelchair accessible home with a pool in Florida, before he passed. He was also a career man.

I'm a veteran but have never expected anything for free or even discounted.....in fact, I hate it when I'm in a public area and a speaker or pastor ask for all the veterans to stand up....I just felt it was my duty to serve for the greatest country on the planet and I don't expect anything for it, glad I was able to do it and glad I got out healthy! God bless America!

Growing up as a child during the Vietnam war, as I became an adult I had to learn what the war was really about to understand what our veterans went though in country and then when they got home. It made me angry. To understand the boy next store, we have to fully understand where we are sending them, why, and most importantly, what it is we are asking them to do. They will never be the same when they get back. We need to be the same as when they left. For them. Home. Thank you for your service Billy. You will always have my respect.

Hey Billy. Just found your channel. Marine vet 1979-1983. This song came out in 83 or 84. Can't remember exactly! It's obviously about Vietnam. It is off the Sports Album. Every song is great. That being said Nobody was singing or supporting Vietnam vet at this time. The song did not get much air play on radio. But you would hear it in biker bars and blue collar bars. There is a live version on UA-cam that's excellent. Huey Lewis and his band the news have been supportive of veterans since the early 80's. Long before it was fashionable. So glad you covered this song Sir. A big Oo-Rah. I am listening to your reaction of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper " next. Keep up the good work Brother!!👍🍻😎

Dude, This is about being told you are going to fight and likely die in a war zone, Vietnam. you know nothing about. That generations', heartbreak and coming "home", living all of the suffering that makes no sense. This song tears me up every time I hear it.... my mom's boyfriend was shot down 3 times piloting a helicopter, has a couple purple hearts from firefights, a good man with a beautiful loving champion heart.. but, one of my best friend's father was so vengeful because his brother was killed there, he volunteered as a marine 4 times to go back and kill "the enemy" and lived. deep shit in this song if you see the backdrops. at least for me......
