  • On January 19, 2024 I headed out for my first winter camping experience at Valens Lake Conservation Area. When I made my plans I had no idea the temperatures would dip to -16 degrees Celcius at night but decided I would still head out and give it a try.
Being my first time I made a number of mistakes which I will use to learn from and ensure that my next winter camping experience is a better time. I'm glad I headed out into the cold to experience winter camping.

Thanks for sharing! Really appreciate the video. Wife and I are planning on doing winter camping there. Is it true it’s first come first serve during the winter for camping? Thanks again! 😊

@michaelmontes3933 Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Correct, From November 1 to March 31 it is first come first serve. There are lots of sites and a lot were empty the night I was there. I don’t think it’s a problem to get a site in the off season. If you get to the park after hours you will pay at the machine to get in (or use an HCA pass), then go to the office the next day and pay for the camping. They will deduct the entrance fee (if you paid one) from the cost of the camping. It’s a beautiful park with some great hiking. Enjoy!

Hahaha, reminds me of my first solo winter camping trip to Pinery a couple of years back. It dropped to -25C overnight. I made a lot of the same mistakes. My tent wasn't free-standing and I couldn't hammer the stakes into the frozen ground so I ended up trying to tie it off to whatever was nearby. I only brought a propane canister stove but at such frigid temperatures there isn't enough pressure inside the canister to get the stove very hot, so it took about 10 minutes just to boil water. Similarly, getting a fire to light was really difficult. But despite all the craziness, I still loved it 😅

@gacsinger Lol, I’m glad I’m not the only one 😁! -25! Wow, that’s cold! But you’re, right even the tough ones are a lot of fun. Sometimes, the most fun as I’ve learned in Algonquin Park. That’s when you really learn what you’re made of. Cheers!

Good job, man!!! I was there last year during the Polar Vortex!! Probably head there next weekend but the weather isn't going to be nearly as cold.
