Honestly, I think this is a brilliant idea. It looks like it’s just about minifig scale, so if you have a few laying around you could set up a scene, sure, but here’s a bigger issue. Millions of Lego fans (and non-Lego fans who are open to them) live in apartments and either don’t have the money or the space (or both) for full modular buildings. And this gives you an intricacy level and visual quality of the modular buildings, but at a scale and price for people who haven’t gone for modulars (like myself, for example, because of the space they take up; as a city dweller, I feel like modular buildings are kind of out of the question) to consider. This seems like a feeler for a new facade series. And let’s face it-how many people build a modular building, enjoy the build, and then put it on a shelf to only look at the outside of it from one angle anyway? These could easily fit on a desk or on a crowded bookshelf of a studio or one bedroom flat for people all over the world. I think from a business standpoint, it’s a brilliant idea and I hope it’s successful. I think it’s a little high in price, maybe $60-70 would feel better, but if you’re a price per part fanatic, this seems like something to champion. I’m not, but I still think that it’s a small discount away from being a really nice model of a facade of a building.

I actually love this concept. It’s small enough to fit in my display area and it has some interesting building techniques. I’m not interested in building a Lego city which is where I think most of the buildings fit well. With this type of set I could have the building experience and be able to display it.

What's worse is how unwarranted it is. If it were justified for what you get that would be one thing, but when competitors are offering sets for 1/3 to 1/2 the cost with the same quality or better plus extra features, then you realize something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.

When I first saw this, I was thinking it was a new line of GWPs, like the Shops and Buildings of the World.
Also I don't need any fancy building techniques. I build to relax, sticking some brick on top of each other. I don't want to think about any complicated techniques.
I completely agree on the base of this. Too many pieces go into the detail. But you hardly look down on the street. You look at the building, the seating areas, the windows, etc.
Such a shame. I won't be getting this, though it looks good.

This'll be $100 in my country-so not exactly cheap! But it's a day one purchase for me. I love the colour scheme and the set looks like a fun, interesting build that will look great on my bookshelf until I eventually use the elements and techniques for a MOC.
I've recently built the Tudor Corner, Fountain Garden, and Beekeepers' House & Flower Garden. My taste in LEGO sets is pretty specific so I didn't anticipate there'd be anything else this year to capture my imagination- except for interesting additions to the PAB store. But now I can hardly wait for the French Café's release!

I have a city, but want this set because it will look cute in my kitchen. I am hoping it will fit on a shelf on the wall above my espresso machine. I really like the cliffside set from Ideas (I think) that hangs on the wall and I saw this and wanted it for that purpose. I am sure people will not want it for their city unless they make a MOD out of it.

  • @judekw6034

I disagree on the scale: From the bottom of the door to the top of the lintel (excl. the arched window), the floor height is 22.5 plates. For the Guarded Inn in the Tudor Corner it is 23 plates. For the Boutique Hotel it is 23 plates (incl. the arched lintel above the door). So it seems to be minifigure scale to me...
Do we all agree on what the building depicts? It's a 1.5 floor café in the style of an Art Nouveau pavilion. It really reminds me of the Otto Wagner pavilion at Karlsplatz in Vienna, although not French.
Maybe it's the little depth of the build that adds to the scale confusion. I would rather have a café that's open to the back with some more to scale interior. One puts it to the wall anyway for closing it off, would have been playable and cheaper if it wasn't for all that filler bricks. But probably that's also for stability reasons, as the techniques are quite intricate.
Overall I like it, price could be lower and as it isn't store exclusive it will likely be. I would have changed the color scheme a bit as it really reminds me of Boutique Hotel though.

I feel like Lego is embrassing adults, giving us cheaper sets... but this is a miss. If this was made for mini figures I could see it more popular. I feel they will sell a few, but can see moc builders buying it. Part of me would love a scene like this, expect with castle or adventure. sigh

If it was a half baseplate modular building o would consider buying it. But despite being relatively affordable. It doesn’t look like it’s worth 80$ this could have been an introduction to a series of smaller half baseplate Modulars that are more affordable than the bigger 200$+ sets.
I feel like they missed an opportunity here for example there are probably loads of kids who look at sets like Tudor Corner but get bummed out because they can’t afford it. Now Lego could come in with more affordable half baseplate modular sets that kids can afford to buy with allowance money. Which would encourage kids to buy the bigger more expensive sets when they can one day afford to spend the money on them.

It's not a set that interests me out of box. I wouldn't know what to do with it; it's not the right scale to be converted into an actual building (or way too cost prohibitive anyway) and I'm not someone who just puts sets on display (with 1 exception: the Indiana Jones Temple of the Golden Idol set). I do love some of the elements in the set, but that's just not worth 80 bucks to me. So no, I won't be getting it. Instead I'll keep an eye on brinklink for individual pieces I might want.
What I want is a half baseplate modular for around 100 bucks (in addition to the regular 'normal sized' modular of course). That's the dream.

  • @SirMola742

This is the kind of set were even if you don't buy it, it's worth skimming the instructions so that you can learn the techniques. I belive those arch pieces have been on PAB walls in the past, so many people have some already (and know to look for them in the future). Also i love the use of the bar hub piece that is frequently used in lego flowers as a chair back (effectively using the connection points as greebling). With regard to the price, i would consider myself an afol, and have a ton of mocs and smaller sets, but have only bought 2 sets that cost $100 or more(great wave and pre-price increase globe), despite being able to afford them. Partly, this is a space issue, but its partly that it just feels too expensive (it helps that my afol focus, botanical, is a cheaper theme). Buildings arn't my thing, but if they were, i would perfer this set over a modular. I will say that if they released a train sation in this format, i would buy it IMMEDIATLY.

If it was a mini-figure scale so that it could be integrated in some fashion into a "city" type build, then it would have more appeal, I think. This feels like something I'd expect to be on sale in France at a tourist gift shop for Lego fans to buy to remember their trip- though at $80.00 I still probably wouldn't, lol. Even on sale a display piece like that holds little appeal for me.
