    I LOVE this interface! I use this interface daily to record pro narration for audiobooks and voiceover, and all I have to do is plug my mic into it, plug the USB cable in, and I am good to go.
    Then I can jump on the drums and record great sounding multitracks without having to change anything.
    Thanks for this comprehensive overview!!!

      @@CraftWon 10, this interface isn't as pretty as a scarlett. And in my opinion that's the only drawback. It is much cheaper and has very good options, control, and sound. It is not hard to get it working, and i think the bad reviews stem from people who are buying their first multi channel interface gravitate towards this because its price is much better than focusrite products.. and newbies generally will have trouble getting any interface set up properly. I use it, and my old saffire pro 10 together. The tascam is my main interface, and i use the saffire 10 for its mic pre amps only to plug into the tascam 9-16, using the tascam only plugged into computer. Giving me 16 mic pre amps. The saffire has award winning pre amps, and there is no difference in sound between it and the saffire...

    I've got 1.5 years ago for my studio. I really like it even with some quirks it has:
    Pros:
    - Super nice price for what you get. Tons of Ins and Outs too.
    - Nice unassuming dark front panel. It looks to me like Darth Vader's interface. Purely functional and clean. The knobs are high quality metal and hard to move.
    - Basic DSP. Proves great to come to the DAW already cleaned up and compressed a bit.
    - Great clean preamps (and I mean it, the noise floor of the preamps themselves is not there) same for the outs. I have two Genelec 8040A and my system at full volume gives zero noise. (I mix at 40%)
    - USB (no fuzz installation and more future proof in my eyes than Thunderbolt, I had already issues using Firewire with my now decommissioned interfaces).
    - Low power consumption. The unit doesn't even get warm.
    - Quite low latency. Lowest I've seen in any interface. (also future proof)
    Cons:
    - The Main Outs 1-2 at least in my unit are not balanced correctly, as I turn the volume up the stereo balance is not equal. The workaround was to use outs 3-4.
    - Again, the Main Outs 1-2: Something in the circuitry on these outs (probably because it has a potentiometer) makes it exhibit distortion. Using outs 3-4 eliminated the issue.
    - The ASIO driver: Unfortunately, it has a bug that makes its buffer / latency to rise but not report it, it happens randomly and is 100% a driver issue. The workaround is to use ASIO4All which works flawlessly all the way down to 32s.
    - They missed a huge opportunity to add a gate before the compressors (they could share the same peak follower DSP algo, it is a no brainer).
    - I doubt TASCAM will ever release an update to solve the ASIO bug or add a gate (which I asked for). They said they were following my request but since the last FW update was in 2016 I doubt they're actively working on this unit. probably kinda flopped cause it was marketed for live band recording and not for high end studio recording.
    Still a great unit if you don't think you need to spend a lot in a fancy interface. Boy I looked at tons of them, even high end units and they all lack in some areas.
    BTW: I have mine working alongside a 2x2HR for system sound and capture and the combo works wonders, never had any issues.

      Do you have any experience with the Tascam US-1800? I have that interface and I use it to record drums. I can record an initial pass with no latency, but if I record again the playback and recording are 1 second late. If I want to get rid of it, I have to change the disk playback cache size. I have to keep doing that for every recording pass or there's the latency. Do you think the ASIO4ALL would fix that? I guess that's what I get for running updates on Pro Tools. haha

      Hey! you know what? I just discovered a couple days ago the 16x08 ASIO driver is no longer clicky.

      Hi, A gain control is designed to increase the input level from low input level things like microphones and guitars to line level (maximum level). Channels 11 to 16 are for instruments like synths that send out their signal at line level, so don't need a gain control (since the input is already at maximum input level).
      Gain and volume are not the same thing though.

It replaced a decent 16 channel mixer, a very good 8 channel PCI card I had to replace due to my upgraded desktop motherboard making PCI obsolete, and a very good / intuitive software interface I can't speak highly enough of. Hi! I'm looking for a new interface and I´m considering this one. Thanks for this review. What's your inside about its converters? are they any good for mixing? I couldn't find the dynamic range of the converters anywhere. I'm also concern about latency performance. I play the piano too and I use several vsts for recording. I know Tascam has released a ner version of the driver. But I'm wondering what the real-life performance is.

      Hi, thank you for your feedback. Personally I am more than happy with the Tascam us16x08 for mixing. You can download the us16x08 pdf manual from the Tascam website that provides a wealth technical specifications. Version 4 of the us16x08 driver has improved stability significantly, which in turn allows smaller buffers and better latency performance. I have used the us16x08 for live band practice sessions without any problems. I would say it's the computer, Daw software, complexity of mix and VSTs that are more of a concern for latency issues.

    Hi! Please enlighten me about one thing: can I connect a dynamic mic on an imput that has phantom power on? Or does the +48V cause some problem or noise? Because I'd like to connect more than 4 dynamic mics and just one condenser, so that a dynamic mic would have to work with the pantom power on.

      Hi, when I record acoustic drums I use 6 dynamic mics and two condenser mics with my us16x08, so 2 of my dynamic mics are connected to inputs with phantom power and I have never had a problem (or any noise).
      Just make sure you are using proper microphone xlr cables (some specialist xlr cables have different wiring that could damage dynamic microphones when connected to phantom power) and I recommend to always plug your microphones (dynamic or condenser) into the audio interface before you switch on the phantom power. Likewise, turn off phantom power before unplugging a microphone.

      Hi, the line out knob controls the output volume of the stereo outputs 1 and 2 on the back of the us16x08. These are the 2 outputs that you would normally plug your (powered) monitors into (or amp if using passive speakers), so in that sense controls the audio level from your computer.
      The gain knobs (numbered 1 to 8), to the left of the line out knob, control the audio level from the mic inputs.

      @jas_bataille 3 роки тому

      No, it will not fry a dynamic; it will, however, fry any delicate - and very, very expensive - ribbon microphones, as Isaac said. In fact, in some instances I find that turning on the phantom power using a dynamic microphones, or feeding it phantom power with a Sound King DI (not saying it will work with any run-of-the-mill phantom DI...), actually improves the sound IMHO and my ears. It's not supposed to do anything, but obviously there are between 12 and 40 volts of current going in.

      Hi, if 8 mic inputs are not enough, there are a couple of options...
      Buy 2 us16x08 audio interfaces, use 1 in stand alone mode and connect the 8 line out outputs to the 8 line in inputs on the 2nd us16x08 (now you have 16 mic inputs)
      Or
      Buy a mixer with 2 mic inputs, send 1 to the left line out output and the other to the right line out output. Then connect the line out outputs to inputs 9 and 10 on the us16x08 (now you have 10 mic inputs). The mixer mic preamps will obviously be different so use them where the difference wont be so obvious... Like for the 2 overhead mics

    How do you control the gain on the inputs on the back? Inputs 11-16? They don’t have the potentiometers

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  9 місяців тому +1

      @Threaded-Band
      They can be switched to either - 10dBv or +4dBu and are designed for line level input only... So suitable for devices with line level outputs (so things like synths, sound modules, digital recorders) that do not require a gain control (gain is used to increase the input level up to line level).
      Basically, that means they don't have pre amps, so if you want to use them with any device that does not have line level outputs (so like a microphone), you will need to provide an external preamp.

      Hi, the knobs marked 1 to 10 on the front of the us16x08 are not volume level controls, they are gain controls. So 8 o'clock isn't zero it's -68dBu. So even fully turned down the gain knob won't stop the sound of a microphone using phantom power, like the Rode Nt1.
      You can use the mute buttons in the Tascam Settings Panel software to turn off the inputs (or the level controls in the Settings Panel to reduce the gain level down to minus infinity) but a very loud signal suggests you have a mic too close to your monitor speakers to me.

      Hi, the Tascam US16x08 (like all audio interfaces) is basically a soundcard, the Tascam software is the soundcard driver software and it's panel setting screens allow you to change the settings of the soundcard. To record you will need some recording software (like a DAW). You select the Tascam US16x08 as the audio device in the audio setup section of the DAW. Then on the track you want to record you select which Tascam US16x08 channel(s) you have connected your microphone/synth/guitar to that you want to record.

    I've been looking for a multi-track usb audio-interface that wasn't 1000s of dollars for recording multi-track channels directly into my DAW (Samplitude Pro X5) for over a week. Of all the Google queries and scouring YT videos NO ONE has ever mentioned the Tascam. I've looked into the reviews from several websites and vendors and it gets near stellar reviews yet no one ever mentions it.
    [Question] For anyone using this audio interface, will this unit allow me to mic gain +60db a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone (really quiet unless I try to deep throat the mic Tori Amos style) while using it as a USB-Audio interface into Windows 10?

      Hi, from the tech diagram in the manual it looks to me like +24dB max but I'm no electronics guru. I don't have a SM7B so unfortunately I can't say whether the us16x08 and a software compressor would do the job. Some mixer interfaces have +60dB gain, even relatively cheap ones, so you might want to check some of them out. At +60dB though you'll need a super quiet preamp or you'll also boost lots of unwanted noise.

If the us16x08 gets disconnected for any reason I just reconnect and click on the reconnect prompt on my screen. The reconnect prompt doesn't appear if the tascam panel app is closed. The us16x08 is only a mic pre amp when not connected to a computer (inputs 1 to 8 run through the pre amp and directly out to the outputs 1 to 8 in the same order - inputs 9 to 16 are not connected), so I guess Tascam didn't see the point since the config will only work when connected to a computer anyway. Bit of a pain if someone wants to use the same settings on another computer though.

      Hi, the us16x08 can record all 16 tracks separately all at the same time (assuming your DAW can). Inputs 1 to 8 require a microphone input level and your reel to reel probably sends line level, so you will probably need to use inputs 9 to 16. Obviously, to record 8 tracks simultaneously from your reel to reel, it must have 8 separate output Jacks (one for each of the 8 tracks).

      Hi, it rather depends on what gear you have and how you want to use them. I have an ultrapatch patch bay but I don't use it for routing because it adds ambient noise to the signal path.
      For outboard fx, set up 2 buses in your DAW, one to send and one to receive back. Output the send bus to us16x08 outputs 7 and 8, then connect these outputs to your outboard fx inputs. Set the receive back bus inputs to us16x08 inputs 15 and 16, then connect these inputs to your outboard fx outputs.
      You could use the patch bay, analog synth style, to patch cable your outboard fx to these inputs/outputs, outputting one fx into the Input of the next in the chain.
      It's an interesting question so I will do a video soon 😀👍

The us16x08 however is a 8 channel mic pre amp when not connected to a computer so (in theory) you can connect the 8 xlr mic inputs of a stand alone us16x08 to the 8 jack inputs of another us16x08 that is connected to a computer and have 16 xlr mic inputs instead of 8 xlr and 8 jack inputs. You wouldn't get more inputs overall but does open up more mic'ing possibilities.

    • @IbandUK

      Tiago Hanna
      Hi, yes you can...
      In your DAW you can send to paired us16x08 outputs 1, 3, 5, 7. In the us16x08 settings panel app these outputs are called Computer 1+2, 3+4, 5+6, 7+8.
      In the us16x08 settings panel app, on the output setting screen, any of the eight line outs can be set to either master 1 or 2 or computer 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. So you could send a monitor track in your DAW to us16x08 output pair 3 and then assign the us16x08 mixer outputs 5 and 7 to computer 3, and outputs 6 and 8 to computer 4, so the monitor track is sent out on 4 outputs. You can only assign one computer output to one us16x08 line output though.

      Hi, if your mixer is a standard mixer then the master (main) outputs should be line level audio (analog) outputs, so you should be able to connect your mixer to any of the 6 line level audio inputs on the back of the us16x08 (inputs 11,12,13,14,15,16) or inputs 9 and 10 on the front panel when switched to Line. Inputs 1 to 8 have pre amps so should only be used for microphones or microphone level inputs.

      Alisa Gvozdeva
      Hi, if you mean that you want 8 separate mono jack outputs, then yes. The us16x08 has 8 mono jack outputs on the back panel. In your DAW you should see 8 outputs available and you can send any choice of DAW tracks to any one of these outputs. These outputs are known as computer outputs and in the us16x08 software you can then assign any one of the computer outputs to any one of the physical jack outputs. So you could literally send track 1 on your DAW to the mono output jack 1, tracks 2 and 7 on your DAW to mono output jack 5.
      Personally I send the stereo master output to mono output jacks 1 and 2 for my studio speakers and my drums and rhythm tracks are also sent to mono output jacks 7 and 8 which are hooked up to my practice room amps.

      Hi, there are many reasons this could be happening but I will give you a few possible ideas. You say 'between cuts' so I assume you are talking about edited tracks. If the problem is the Tascam itself then increase the buffer size, this can be done in the settings panel on the INTERFACE tab window. If the recording level is too high you will get digital clipping that can create this kind of sound so watch out for the clipping lights on the Tascam while recording. Some types of sounds when spliced can create this type of sound at the joins, in this case, try to adjust where you join sound clips or use a short fade-in at the beginning of the cut to remove the spike in sound (a short cross fade between clips often works better).

      Hi, officially you would need to use attenuators to reduce the line level to mic level (often done on large live stage setups with pro mixer desks). The mic inputs are not the dual input type (xlr + jack) and you cant bypass the mic preamps so although you could (at least in theory) connect a line level input to the mic inputs if you reduce the input volume accordingly, you would risk damaging the mic pre amps and the sound quality of the line level input would be reduced. So personally I would say no, unless you use attenuators.

      Hi, I do it all in the DAW.
      If you want to do it all in the DAW, don't mute the channels in the us16x08 Settings Panel software . Once you have set your choice of output settings and set the buffer size, you can pretty much forget the us16x08 Settings Panel software beyond the fact that it has to be started for the us16x08 to work (starts up when you turn your computer on by default).
      Routing wise, you select the us16x08 input channel in the DAW track input setting. For output, in the DAW you either leave the output on master or you select a us16x08 computer output channel in the DAW track output setting. In the us16x08 Settings Panel software you select either master or a computer output channel for each of the 8 us16x08 outputs, which only needs doing once.

    Can the XLR inputs on the front be used to connect line instruments such as synths?

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  2 роки тому +1

      Mike Moorfield
      Hi, I've been asked this a lot so I tested it and the result is this...
      There is no way to bypass the mic level pre amps, so connecting a line level output (like a synth output) results in audible digital distortion even if the synth's volume is turned down. So even at low synth volumes the mic level pre amps are quickly overloaded. So I am going to stick with the official answer, and that is... To connect a line level output to a mic level input, you need to use a line level to mic level attenuator. Professional live sound mixers actually prefer to connect synths to mic inputs using attenuators instead of connecting them to line level inputs, so using attenuators isn't uncommon but they can add quite a bit of cost to the budget.
      So in short, yes but only if you use attenuators.

One of the synths was playing midi notes send to it at the same time through the us16x08 midi Din out socket. All 16 audio tracks were sent from the us16x08 to my windows 10 pc through the USB cable and recorded to 16 separate tracks in my DAW (sonar x1).

      Hi, yes it supports usb 2 but yes you can record each channel independently... How they appear depends on your DAW, some DAWs just show them as stereo channel 1 left and stereo channel 1 right (etc) instead of mono channel 1 and mono channel 2 (etc) but other DAWs (like Ableton live) can show them as stereo channels and/or mono channels (depending how you it set up). Whether the channels act like stereo channels or mono channels though is set in the us16x08 Settings Panel.

    Can I monitor with effect while recording it clean?

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  4 роки тому +3

      Jeron Teo
      Hi, yes, there are several ways you can do that.
      The Mute buttons in the us16x08 Setting Panel software mute the monitor output, not the actual input. So you could feed in a clean input to one of the us16x08 inputs and feed in an input with the desired effect into another us16x08 input. Mute the clean input in the us16x08 Settings Panel software so only the effect input is not muted (and therefore the only channel monitored). In your daw simply record just the clean channel. Or, if the effect is a DAW plug-in... set up 2 record tracks, one clean, one with the effect. Arm the clean channel to record and turn off input-echo (monitor) for that track. Don't record the track with the effect added but turn on input-echo in the DAW software for that track. Now when you record you will monitor the input with the effect on but record the clean input. If you are not sure how to turn track input-echo off in your DAW, turning on the mute button for the clean should also do the trick (you should be able to still record to a muted track).
      The 1st option makes use of the us16x08 Settings Panel software but the 2nd option should work with pretty much any decent DAW software and audio interface (and has the benefit of only needing one source input).

      Thankfully not, otherwise the us16x08 would only have 8 audio inputs instead of 16 and you would need to add another audio interface with a ADAT output just to use the other 8 inputs. It is worth noting that ADAT does not expand an audio interface but simply allows access to hidden inputs.

      T d r
      Hi, the 3 stereo inputs on the back are set at line level so don’t have a gain circuit or pre amp. A pre amp is designed to boost the signal of a source to line level, so yes, you can connect the line level output of a pre amp to the line level inputs on the back. For instance, Tascam state you can set up one us16x08 as a stand alone 8 mic pre amp and connect the line level outputs on the back of that us16x08 to the line level inputs on the back of a second us16x08 that is in computer mode and have an extra 6 mic inputs.

    Edirol Fa101 10 X10 from 2005 RTL 6.8ms on a 10$ Firewire PCIe card. 11 ms is absurd in 2020 asking that kind of money for 11 ms is laughable. 15 years and the Edirol Fa101 still going zero issues. USB is simply not designed for real time audio in and out and USB3 is the same garbage, instead of designing USB3 for low latency audio they never bothered. There is no difference with audio latency for USB2 vs USB3 or 4 for that matter. Good interface here but the latency is atrocious.

      @@IbandUK I know they updated the Windows driver ( since Windows ASIO Driver does not have to worry about the OS kernel panics). Right now I am looking at the Roland ( formerly Edirol) 20x20 interface as they have done some nice additions to their USB interfaces. Most companies have given up on USB latency and have gone to DSP based effects like EQ, Compression and some reverb. These 3 additions to the interface prior to entering the USB Bus are good in the sense they eliminate the latency on these 3 plugins which are part of a basic track input fx. Still my Edirol FA-101 has been super solid for 15 years. Thousands of power on/offs on the power button, pots etc not one single issue, it works the same way as it did back in 2005. So looking for an interface with 20 in 20 out ( not Adat needed) so it’s between the Tascam and the Roland as the Presonus 1824 is a joke.

    • @IbandUK
      @IbandUK  4 роки тому

      Gabriel D.C Stoica
      Hi, the US16x08 is just an audio interface, you would need a 5.1 A/V receiver for 5.1. The US16x08 has 8 analogue outputs so the A/V receiver would need to have 6 discrete analogue inputs and the US16x08 outputs at +4dBu so the A/V receiver would need to accept +4dBu or you would need to convert the +4dBu to -10dBV.
      That's the technical answer... I don't record/monitor in 5.1 myself so I haven't tested the US16x08 in a 5.1 setup.
