Great review Thomas! Nice detailed video. I couldn't ignore though that the A pillar rubber sealing on the driver side is loose, once I noticed that I just couldn't un-see it :), I guess Tesla still needs to work on quality and execution.

My dream car
Tesla should bring back 22kw AC charging option in Europe as there is no free supercharging anymore. Zoe owners with half the battery capacity gets free full charging at the shopping malls and IKEA within their shopping time.

Very good and usful review, how could you recognize and raven model over an older model both from the outside and interior?
You may know the answer by now, but the easiest way externally is that it will say "Dual Motor" on the back without the old designations (75D, 100D etc.)
Should drive over rough road & potholes see how it feels with air suspension
I kept my 3 in chill mode for 1 1/2 years. Now in standard but I'm always driving for max efficiently anyway. My speed days are over!
More than 10 years since the S intro and it still attracts my attention, every time. IMO, the most beautiful high production car ever produced. It simply doesn't age!
I'd trade up if it wasn't for the yoke/no stalks thing which I find appalling, especially the lack of stalks. A design change nobody wanted!
I would be hard pressed to tell you the year on any BMW on the road or, actually, most any car on the road today. It's like other manufacturers no longer matter.
My 3 satisfies me at a level never approached by other cars I've owned.

@@redfiber247 I've decided an S is not in my future.
My biggest grip with my 3 has been the rather harsh ride but that seems to have substantially improved after suspension break in. Raising the seat level on EASY EXIT has improved my comfort quite a bit.
They stopped the S/X production lines for 18 days at the end of December. I hope that means a refresh

I've never seen Thomas praise a vehicle this much. It says a lot about the huge strides Tesla is making in their quality and user experience. Great review!
Just remember quality is not only the feeling of knocking on the dashboard. S and X are still today built with old flaws on bearings that make the car vibrate harshly when accelerating hard. I had a Model 3 and my father has a X, sadly I know to well the people at my Tesla service center..

@@robonaut-nyne2331 I recall him being critical of the length of the hood, which is useless bc there's no storage like other EVs. This is bc the car is a retrofit of their ICE mode, not an industry leader strategy/mindset. I sense a defensiveness on this thread of threat from Tesla...
@@Succumbed2Rum Thomas was positive about the driving and handling of the iX3. It's just a comment about another EV, not a "defensiveness on this thread of threat from Tesla..." as you allege. The iX is a ground-up EV without a frunk, as is VW's ID.4.
Note that worldwide sales of cars with a plug stand at about 2%. The rest is ICE. This will change as more people buy EVs, but people like choice, many countries have yet to move on to EVs, and Tesla is not the only EV maker.
The foot garage of a Taycan is missing here in the rear...but this means a different Batterie Layout in the floor is needed.

What kind of range can one expect at 150-160km/hour?
FYI: I believe that Tesla has made a running change as of the early 2020 Model Year (or possibly late 2019 Model Year) to transition to the much more environmentally friendly, non-leather steering wheel. We have both a 2019 and an early 2020 MS Performance and there is a very subtle difference in the steering wheels, with the 2020's wheel actually feeling better than the 2019; both are heated, of course. Frankly, I have driven a Model 3 as well and it is very hard to notice the difference, except that the non-leather wheel does have a bit more grip and a higher quality feel.
Correct, the current S has synthetic leather steering wheel. Thomas’s mistake.
I wish they would make a “Real Man’s Edition” with full leather interior.

Air suspension is the difference, other than that, gap doesnt justify double the price!

I think we can all agree a refresh is needed. Now seeing as the plaid is coming out in Q4 2021 I can only see a possible refresh coming in 2023/2024 at the earliest
I agree. This really needs an update and it probably won’t happen anytime soon w the upcoming plaid release.
However for $70k in the US, this is still a really good deal considering the other $70k alternatives. Even a genesis g90 is more expensive than this.

At least 300 km at 160 km/h and 200 km at a constant 220 km/h (Autobahn Hamburg-Berlin until the Wittstock Supercharger). I know, because I have the exact same car, even same color (2020 LR), but 21inch wheels which still provide excellent comfort.

I just notice how good the Autobahn is, I m from Los Angeles and the road here feel like I go off road and I have German car and the suspension feels like I need to replace it. hahahaha I don’t think is only the air suspension, and the electric car just show how perfect they road are in Germany, especially the Engine noise of Combustion are gone, and for high speed you need a great road. This Tesla is definitely is better, in quality, then the past. What a development, I definitely think Tesla Is taking the German Cars as example.
@Dave Jones They do it right. In los angeles, they resurfaced the road near my house. When we got the first rain in the season the following year it's as if they never fixed the road at all. Potholes just open up and cracks everywhere.
No separate settings for screen brightness? It changed brightness on cockpit as well. :/
You can set the screen brightness yourself
You can set steering wheel scroll wheel to adjust brightness.
the silence and quietness are more than impressive. That alone makes it a true premium luxury car.

I have one, it's not that quiet.. quite noisy actually compared to Audi eTron.

@@Tegneaufreak I want an ev for the ultimate isolation / relaxation car. The etron is really quiet, but pricey. W the recently lowered price of the model s to $70k USD, its a pretty good deal. Do you have the raven version? Is it much louder or just slightly? I have test driven the model 3 and Y and they were LOUD on the highway.
Reduced Li ? Not the issue and not correct. Problem is mostly with Co.
Thomas, if NVH considerations are the most important, would I still be better off with an E-Class?
They are in different price brackets and they're aimed at two totally different markets, one is 56k ish whereas the other is 86ish

@@EngineeringNibbles For me NVH is very important. I’ll pay more (not Rolls Royce Ghost prices, however), for a more pleasant NVH experience.

It comes with a CSS adapter
Model 3 was designed for that and so it has a bigger charge cover and everything. Model S has a very small charge cover and housing so they have to update the entire exterior to accommodate for it!
Hey Thomas, regarding the noise comparisons I notice a lot of booming sounds from my e-tron at city speeds. Did you ever notice this? It's apparently a known issue. I find it to be very uncomfortable.

Model S totally quiet at city speeds, no E-Tron booming. Model X has some more road noise.
I think Tesla have come so far in short space of time Thomas , Tesla are going forward and are becoming a very popular sight on UK Roads , For me, Most other Manufactures have a long way to go to play catch up .. Awesome video 👍👍

elevul that's 125 mph hour in US, which would land you in jail . In real world autobahn driving, you're lucky to even see that with all the Lorry traffic anymore.

The battery takes 250kW, but in Europe the CCS adapter ist the bottleneck which limits charging to 140kW.

What peak power can I get with a CCS Combo 2 adapter?
All Model S and Model X owners can currently receive peak powers of up to 142 kW, roughly equivalent to the highest charging powers supported by V2 Supercharging (150 kW). As part of the introduction of the V3 Supercharger, we continue to improve this technology. We will publish it as soon as we have more information available about peak power.

The 2022 model has yoke and handles are removed. So this version is actually better in my opinion. Yes the 2022 is facelift internally and outside a little, but I cant stand a var with only push buttons for signal giver... That is actually dangerous when turning!

Trunk is huge, unfortunately he didn’t show the extremely deep and wide underfloor storage which counts towards volume figure. I carry a large bicycle in it without having to disassemble it!

This is the car I will buy in 10 years when I can afford it used with 200k on the clock.
When its mechanical parts are in state that they will need replacements within few years? I can see that working for many cars, but not Teslas. Replacement parts for Tesla are very expensive and regular repair shops can't service it. Teslas are awesome, but they are not built to last that long and they are not built to be maintainable by anyone other than overpriced Tesla service.
@@slava_trushkin ten years ago this car did not exist. In ten more years there will be plenty of parts for them and masses of service centers.
In the UK, you will be unable to buy a new gasoline vehicle in ten years, and electric cars will be the standard. Tesla has the lion's share of the market in electric vehicles, has 2-3 years lead in the in-car technology and is thinking a decade ahead of other automakers on batteries. So, it stands to reason that they will still be a leader in ten years and their service footprint will reflect this.
Ten years ago, Tesla had no service centers in the UK. They have 14 now and will have 8 more next year. Add to that the inevitable switch to electric vehicles will mean more and more work will be carried out by licensed independent garages. They will HAVE to, or go out of business.
Add to that I will likely be in the middle of my midlife crisis, and this will end up being a project car; a labor of love.
@@MrGonzonator Tesla uses commercially available batteries from pannasonic, lg and catl, no different from other manufacturers.
@@grekiki so why do they charge faster, and deliver more power and greater efficiency than any other "commercially available pack".
@@grekiki other manufacturers are just getting round to thinking about bringing battery manufacturing in house. Tesla have done that already with Panasonic's help, and within a year will be producing their own cells to their own design, using machines they designed for the purpose and ready to scale for the coming decade of growth. They've even made some inroads into mining their own raw materials, though the jury is out on whether that will come to anything.

@@autogefuehl Agree. It’s a terrible workaround. I’ve also had some close calls in my car where it should have alerted and didn’t! It’s definitely a Tesla demerit.
What is the increase fuel consumption of an E Class Mercedes at high AutoBahn speeds? How does its range drop? I think its unfair to constantly talk about electric car's higher power usage at high speeds when petrol cars typically start having higher fuel consumption after 80-90km/h too.

The front of the vehicle still looks quite new but i'd have to disagree with the back looking timeless the tailights have a form and color profile and boot has a shape that looks outdated a few years.
I also dislike the PVC leatherette replacement of the leather since it is more environmentally burdensome than the leather and less bio degradable

In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which body part you would murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter.
Not using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all just of common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

So, your real world range with mix of higher speed and slower city driving was 32 kw per 100 miles. That would give just a little over 300 miles total from the 100 kWh battery pack. Very impressive given that Porsches own Taycan is nowhere near that number in same driving.

I so want to like this car. The lines are nice but that main screen, nope, sorry. Still looks like someone stuck a computer monitor in there and the lack of physical buttons for climate and other controls is a deal breaker. Yes, I know all manufacturers are going this way but if we complain enough perhaps they will change.
Ever heard of Automatic Climate control? I don’t understand why people always need to adjust climate controls when this is completely automatic. Most people don’t know how to use Auto setting.
Tesla really made a timeless design with the model S. The exterior design will not go out of fashion in the nearest future.

I love the exterior design. It will not go out of fashion anytime soon. Interior can be updated though.
Dude, didn’t you listen to him? Quality is superb, I would agree to your statement back in 2014, but nowadays the, quality especially inside, is the same as other premium cars. It’s still one of the best looking sedan designs, like a 4 door Aston Martin. 21inch dark grey wheels and lowered suspension make a huge difference!

I must confess...The model S is my favorite Tesla. While the model Y is far more practical, the model S is still quite nice.

Sorry, it’s a semi-complete review. You barely reviewed the infotainment, incl. Spotify and TuneIn Radio, Games, Sentry Mode, Camping Mode, Summon. Also barely commented on Autopilot which automatically exits the Autobahn (even in Germany!). Too bad you didn’t show rear underfloor trunk, because it’s huge - really unique, you don’t even find this in most other EV’s. A Tesla review is not complete without a Supercharging stop - it’s just so easy.
Are these popping up in Europe? Figured Diesel was still the go to for MPG
No Diesel gets anywhere near an electric in MPG converted. My Hyundai Kona EV does about 65 km/l which is about 152 mpg. I do a lot of highway driving. I see tons of Model 3's and some Model S'.

I hope that Tesla make affordable family car with decent battery range. Or something cheaper for us normal working people. That we don't need to pay yearly 'motorbezogenesteuer' . For now is only option Toyota's hybrid system.
What's decent? It's very subjective question. Most people say 300 miles but 95% of their journeys are less than 50.
I guess it comes down to how much sacrifice you wish to accept on those rare occasions you need the full range, compared to the cost of lugging around expensive batteries which you hardly ever "need".
@@MrGonzonator Decent would be around 500 kilometers. So that I can drive from Monday to Friday to work with no worries. Circa 80 to 100 km per day.
@@emilch8341 do you have a driveway at home? Does your place of work have electricity? Do you ever go to the shops? Soon, all these places will have charge points.
Invest all your spare change in Tesla stock and work harder, working people. That’s how you can afford a Tesla.
@@richyzig or, buy an electric MG that's half the price, live with the 7 second acceleration, 200 mile compromise but start the transition to sustainable transport years earlier than you could otherwise do if you were "saving for a Tesla".
