Upgrade the MCU you will not regret it. They may recall your screen for the memory chip if it has not already been replaced. The old screens get a yellow boarder that gets worse overtime. If the car has FSD they may upgrade it to the 3.0 hardware from your 2.5. I have almost the same model without air and glass roof, RWD tends to eat tires as I am finding out so keep them rotated to get 20 or 25k out of them. If you have winter weather or salty conditions service the brakes every year (remove rust and dirt from pads and lube contact surfaces). Tesla comes out with new things all the time, your car might have options that are no longer available that you want or don't want in my case so trading in for a newer one may not be worth it. I use the car connector that comes with the car on a 14-50 outlet and it works fine, you really do not need a wall charger.
@@TheTechMillennial I have been waiting on them to call me in for recall after I started getting random reboots. still no call on parts received. I just bought a 2017 Tesla 75 like yours, 19,000 miles from a private party about 3 miles from my home in Naples, FL. I am picking up this Thursday morning. I have researched the S and knew that I wanted one but didn't want to spend $100,00. So I decided to try out the used car market. I am looking forward to going electric, even though I still have a few gas powered cars at home. Thanks for your likes and dislikes.
So welcome to the Tesla family and you may not be a fan boy yet but you will be! So I’ve had my Tesla Model 3 now for a little over 2 years & when took delivery it did have a few issues, but as you said, nothing that would have made it a dealbreaker & all of the issues were easily fixable & they were, so like you I don’t have a way to charge at home because I live in an apartment complex, so I charge my car exclusively using Tesla supercharger‘s! So when I first got the car the nearest Tesla supercharger was approximately 17 miles away in another state, however, since then Tesla has installed 2 additional superchargers near where I live & now the closest one is 5 miles away in my state! So I have the longe range battery pack & since I do not have a commute because I’m retired, I may need to charge the car a couple of times a week depending on my driving needs for that particular week, no real big deal at all! Of course with the adapter I have access to charging stations even closer than the Tesla superchargers, but because of the slow rate of charger, I almost never use them & some are free like at certain Whole Foods stores! So the way I see it if anyone comparing a Tesla to any other car is comparing apples to oranges, because there’s so many advantages to owning a Tesla & I’m hoping that they do a refresh on the Model 3 & offer the yoke steering wheel & air suspension as an option, that will make the deal real good & it’s something I will definitely can get excited about! So Elon if you’re listening, make it happen brother!
Do you happen to have a 110v 20A plug in your garage? Google NEMA 5-20 and see how it looks. It can accept one of the prongs being horizontal. If you have that, you can get a $35 adapter from Tesla and that will allow you to charge ~33% faster. Your 30 miles would become ~40 then...although idk why you only get 30 miles over night, you must work late and leave early?
No I actually charge in my garage and it doesn’t have that. I guess it’s a little more than that sometimes if I charge for 10 hours. But sometimes I’m very busy or get up early to do things before work so it doesn’t get to charge that long.
@@TheTechMillennial Do you have a dryer nearby? Those use 240v. You can run an extension cord and attached the mobile charger to it. You might need and adapter as well.
@@ymcpa73 This is what I did. I swapped out my unused 30A 220v dryer receptacle for a NEMA 14-30 receptacle from Home Depot for $10. I then purchased a 220v adapter from a Tesla for $35. I spent a total of $45 in parts and 15 minutes of sweat equity and problem solved!
LOL about the pannel gaps, went to a mercedes dealer and on the floor was a GL wagon. The passenger side door gap was terrible from almost touching the bottom to wide at the top. The rear door was almost as bad but it made the entire side look like someone crashed it really hard. In the very rear the orange peel was so bad that I actually thought my first impression that this was a accident car that had been fixed. Nope a 2023. the salesperson seemed to blow over it saying that they would fix the issues.
It is a very good point you made, that there are no pictures of the used cars on their website. You essentially buy "die Katze im Sack", not knowing if the price you see and the limited data on the car justifies the asking price. I wonder, does the website state the hardware specs; like which MCU is installed?
Only Tesla could get away with that because of their high demand. But I think overall they did a really great job of staying within their specified guidelines. Then don’t specify MCU because all Model S & X built after 2018 came with MCU 2. And all Model 3 and Y ever made have MCU 2 as well.
you can update the media control unit, i want to say like $2500? I mean weird complaint since u bought a used car that its of course not most up to date hardware
Man you went through the same thought process I did. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my 100D Model S. Have also been worried that it wouldn't have enough "umph", but glad to hear that's not an issue. Curious to see if you had the same problems I did with their buying process though.
Just realized you're also in Houston. So I'm *definitely* curious of your experience. I've been seeing (and experiencing) some negative things about the Houston - North Delivery Center in particular
Does it really? I’m not talking about being able to go into the Tesla app to unlock and start your car, I’m talking about what Tesla calls “Phone Key” which automatically unlocks your car when you walk up to it and your iPhone is in your pocket.
Just an FYI, you can schedule to have your FSD computer upgraded to the latest hardware for no charge through the app. You also have the option to have the MCU unit upgraded as well though it is a $1500 charge(also schedulable through the app).
You should if you haven’t already ceramic coat the exterior and interior to help preserve the Tesla. Nice video. Am in the market for a either a model s or model y. Would like to start off on a low mile certified one, but have to research it more.
Really looking forward to your next video about the buying process from Tesla. I’m at the crossroads between a new 3 or Y vs a used S. I’m really particular about my vehicles condition and this has me leaning towards a new one. I’ve seen a lot of condition disparity between Tesla cpo cars when they used to show pics. This has me nervous going through the process without seeing the car. Looking forward to your thoughts and more vids.
you need to get MCU2, I have it on my 2014 p85 and it makes it feel like a brand new car.. it will affect your driving experience, because it is NOT just the chip.. they replace both your screens! the resolution is amazing.. the back up camera looks much better, the sound is better and you get all the new updates, first. Oh and yes, get a 240 box for your home. my old Tesla has "dual chargers" so it will charge at 22kw, instead of 11, but even then, it depends on how much you are pumping in. I only do 30 amps so I get 21 miles of charge per hour, which has always been just fine.. even on days where I drive a lot, if I am home for an hour, adding back 21 miles has made my day easier. so GET that MCU2 really! just think.. you got FSD for almost nothing.. make your car feel like new. btw, I have 105,000 miles on my car and I love all evs. and I will be keeping mine for as long as I can
It’s very tempting! I believe my S already has the higher resolution screen and backup camera already though. But eventually I think I’ll end up doing it for all the new features and better performance. Cheers 🥂
Tesla should be able to tell you is you have MCU2. If you have access to FM radio, you have MCU1. MCU2 will give you more visualizations in the driver display than MCU1.
Bruh...this is some quality production. I highly recommend getting MCU 2 upgrade if you plan on keeping the car for a while but plan it out, you might just want to trade it in for a latest Tesla soon you never know lol
You might want to consider the MCU 2 upgrade at some point sooner than later. I have a 2015 Model S and it got to the point of not updating anymore. Once upgraded from. MCU 1 to MCU 2, it started updating again. I only have AP1, but I found the update as a good update that makes the car feel fresh again. You car will leverage the MCU 2 and make the FDS better. I know... $1500 is a chunk of change, but I found it to be worth the money. Also, thanks for the great video!!
@@TheTechMillennial agreed! It’s nice for sure, but I would use what you have first and foremost. Make sure to fix the 8GB eMMC chip in the MCU1. It should be under warranty. Mine broke twice before the recall was issued. That will ensure that your system works. And if you decide to go for MCU2, then you’ll see the difference for sure. And if not, the car should remain functioning as intended.
Congrats on the Tesla! I have a Model 3, and agree with many of the things you like about it. To be fair...pretty much all of the things that you don't like about your Tesla are because you bought a used model from 2017. All brand new Tesla Model S has the features you want and like. It's like buying an iPhone 7 off of eBay and complaining that it doesn't have the features of the iPhone 12. So that brings me to an interesting point that you alluded to. Yes, the car improves with age due to over-the-air software updates. But there is a hardware limitation for that software. You will eventually get to a point in time where your current hardware will not run the latest software, and you'll be left behind. Just like a smartphone...same concept. In fact, I tell people all the time that I treat my Tesla like I do my smartphone. I always charge my phone at night so I have a full charge for the next day. My Tesla is no different. It charges in my garage off the 240v Tesla wall charger while I'm asleep, and it's ready for me the next day (I drive about 110 miles roundtrip per day). My Model 3 is also White on White; the perfect combo...and yours looks great! Again...congratulations!
I completely understand and that’s why I’m not too upset because I know technology over time becomes outdated. I just wanted to put out the good AND the bad but like my conclusion states I don’t regret my purchase :) once I have the 240v installed everything will be great! Cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
I don’t believe so. You buy the wall charger and then pay an electrician to install it. You would have to pay them again to remove it and then install at the new location!
@@TheTechMillennial the horizontal screen and updated exterior? More range? or is that what you arent looking for? even then congrats on the new car, you made a good choice either way!
Some of your complaints I would say are because you bought the older model, but as you said you can get the MCU2 update. I believe if you ask the service dept because you have FSD the 2.5 gets upgraded to 3.0 as part of that, at least it was reported by folks. Might check the Tesla Motors Club forum for how people got that done (free). I have a 2019 X with 2.5, but I didn't spring for FSD. Though I did order my 2021 Model S last week, so getting the refreshed version.
Best Model S video review. Since your car came with FSD, your Model S is qualified to get a computer upgrade to 3.0. Hardware 2.5 means you have 8 cameras. Upgrading the computer to handle FSD will make it 3.0
MAN I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW YOUR VIDEO OF WHEN YOU SWITCHED TO SAMSUNG BUT I SEE YOU DIDN'T SWITH FOR LONG IT SEEMS THAT YOU HAVE TO MANY TIES TO APPLE STILL...THAT'S HOW THEY GET YOU HAHA BUT OVERRALL I ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS GREAT CONTENT MAN :)
Moved yet? If not, maybe there's a 110v that can be upgraded to 20 amps? It'd be a new breaker and a new outlet and probably less than $100 including the additional pigtail for the mobile charger. Go NEMA 14-50 if you can. That charges our 2021 Model 3 at 34 mi/hr. The nearest supercharger is only 15 mi away if we're in a hurry, but that'd mean we just got back from a trip and needed to head out immediately.
Quality issues have been sorted and here in Europe we are now getting TESLAs from China and they are very well made. I suggest getting some third party cosmetic work and paint protection done they will sort out any blemishes.
Your charging experience improves 10 fold after installing a 240v outlet in garage. If possible, go for a nema 14-50 outlet. My gen1 UMC cable delivers 29-30 miles per hr charging. I installed two, one for primary house and other for vacation home. Frequent supercharging is not good for battery so mix lots of slow charging with less frequent fast charging. Complete that move ASAP!
I can imagine what a huge difference it’s going to make not having to worry about plugging it in every single day! And you’re right about the damage supercharging could cause to the battery. Thanks!
I can drive my Model X (2018 P100D) without the keyfob; why do you say only M3 and Y can do that? Why do you complain about having MCU1 and 2.5 HW, when Tesla will upgrade them for free to version 3, since you have FSD? They changed mine last December.
I’m talking about Tesla’s “Phone Key” feature that automatically unlocks and starts your car with your phone in your pocket without having to open the app. Tesla will upgrade to HW3 but not the MCU :)

The negatives are definitely outweighed by the positives! I absolutely love this car. Cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
The upgraded infotainment is listed on the used inventory now.
Oh nice! Just checked it out and you’re right 👍🏽
At 8:40: You can unlock and drive your Model S with your phone app without the key fob. I do it sometimes.
I’m referring to “Phone Key” which unlocks and starts your car without having to take your phone out of your pocket or use the app.
you can update the media control unit, i want to say like $2500? I mean weird complaint since u bought a used car that its of course not most up to date hardware
Man you went through the same thought process I did. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my 100D Model S. Have also been worried that it wouldn't have enough "umph", but glad to hear that's not an issue. Curious to see if you had the same problems I did with their buying process though.
Just realized you're also in Houston. So I'm *definitely* curious of your experience. I've been seeing (and experiencing) some negative things about the Houston - North Delivery Center in particular
You definitely won’t regret it! And stay tuned. 👍🏽
@@TheTechMillennial 🔥🔥🔥 I'm hyped, delivery day tomorrow!
Nice!! So soon already. I’m excited for you, I know you won’t regret it 👌🏽
@@TheTechMillennial Thanks bro!
Great video really enjoyed the humor And would probably be impulsive and purchase one the exact same way
Thank you!
Should notate that the refreshed 2021 Model S does have keyless entry like Model 3/Y.
Does it really? I’m not talking about being able to go into the Tesla app to unlock and start your car, I’m talking about what Tesla calls “Phone Key” which automatically unlocks your car when you walk up to it and your iPhone is in your pocket.
@@TheTechMillennial yeah the refreshed Model S has that capability.
Niiiiiiice, maybe I should go drop $90k on a brand new one just so I can have it! Lol
Just an FYI, you can schedule to have your FSD computer upgraded to the latest hardware for no charge through the app. You also have the option to have the MCU unit upgraded as well though it is a $1500 charge(also schedulable through the app).
Might do the MCU upgrade it’s tempting!
You should if you haven’t already ceramic coat the exterior and interior to help preserve the Tesla. Nice video. Am in the market for a either a model s or model y. Would like to start off on a low mile certified one, but have to research it more.
The title is deceiving.. but the content is nice!!! And yes... the Model S, what an incredible CAR!!! Amazing!!!
You think so? How so? But thanks for the support 😁
Good , honest review. Thankyou
Excellent superb video. Just outstanding the effort. Thanks man
No, thank YOU! 🙏🏽
My 2020 model S does allow me to use the phone as a key. Although I have to log into the app. It's not automatic.
That is true. I’m referring to how the model 3 unlocks automatically with your phone in your pocket without having to take it out and go into the app
I can see why you’d be nervous. Hopefully my next video helps you!
Tesla Model S is my dream Tesla😍 It looks absolutely amazing
One day! 🤞🏽
@@TheTechMillennial Manifesting it🤞🏻
you need to get MCU2, I have it on my 2014 p85 and it makes it feel like a brand new car.. it will affect your driving experience, because it is NOT just the chip.. they replace both your screens! the resolution is amazing.. the back up camera looks much better, the sound is better and you get all the new updates, first.
Is your Maintenance costs as low as they say teslas/evs are?
How does one buy a Tesla by accident...cuz I wanna make that same accident too... :)
Haha, it was more of an unexpected, impulse decision 😅
I wish my mistakes turn out so well
You're an accident ;)
@@ArchisMarathe all this planet is accident:)
I like the production value of this video
Thank you!
Bruh...this is some quality production. I highly recommend getting MCU 2 upgrade if you plan on keeping the car for a while but plan it out, you might just want to trade it in for a latest Tesla soon you never know lol
Thank you! ✊🏽 and you’re right 👀 might get a slightly used Model S refresh in a 2 years 🤔
@@TheTechMillennial keep an eye on what’s going with the latest Tesla MCU recall on older models 😈
Yep! They emailed me already lol. But it’s not a MCU recall just a component.
All these comments keep tempting me to get it! I can imagine how great it is I’m just not sure if the cost justifies it. And thank you!
Great vid, didn’t know uncorking was possible on the non-D 75 version.
Apparently it’s some very specific models but I’m glad mine did!
The tesla wall charger. What happens if you move homes? Does tesla remove and reinstall it for you?
I don’t believe so. You buy the wall charger and then pay an electrician to install it. You would have to pay them again to remove it and then install at the new location!
@@TheTechMillennial and thats how Tesla nickel and dimes you... i would love an electric car if the infrastructure was in place to use it practically
You don’t pay Tesla to install it, you can hire any electrician to do the install!
I own a s model and I just open and start it with the pone...don´t need the fob, so I don't understand why you are saying this
I mean without having to unlock your phone and open the app
why didnt you wait for the brand new model s
Not many differences and costs more
@@TheTechMillennial the horizontal screen and updated exterior? More range? or is that what you arent looking for? even then congrats on the new car, you made a good choice either way!
Where is the link to buying experience ?
Still in the making!
Yes I know, they were minor complaints that can mostly be resolved. I’m still happy regardless. I got the AP 3 already installed for feee 😎
Best Model S video review. Since your car came with FSD, your Model S is qualified to get a computer upgrade to 3.0. Hardware 2.5 means you have 8 cameras. Upgrading the computer to handle FSD will make it 3.0
Recently learned about that, thank you! 😎 and thanks for the support! ✊🏽
the white paint can make those panel gaps pop. thats why i opted for the gray paint
Why you not uploading?
Hi
great editing!
Thanks ✊🏽
MAN I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW YOUR VIDEO OF WHEN YOU SWITCHED TO SAMSUNG BUT I SEE YOU DIDN'T SWITH FOR LONG IT SEEMS THAT YOU HAVE TO MANY TIES TO APPLE STILL...THAT'S HOW THEY GET YOU HAHA BUT OVERRALL I ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS GREAT CONTENT MAN :)
Haha thank you!!
The nearest supercharger is only 15 mi away if we're in a hurry, but that'd mean we just got back from a trip and needed to head out immediately.
why u did not wait for refresh one
Because it costs twice as much lol
loved your review, when is the buying experience video going up ?
Just spent the past week moving to an entirely new house so that pushed the video back but I’m back on track now!
You need both MCU2 and HW3 to get Full Self Driving. You will get fewer and fewer software updates in the future if you don’t upgrade.
🤔 I will look into that.
What do you do for a living?
Cant you get a HW3 upgrade for free since you have the FSD package?
Yes!
What year your model is?
2021
This was 2017. But I have the refreshed 2022 now, so will be doing a follow up video on that one!
I think that you were supposed to wait for the new model s coming out soon
And spend twice as much? 😅
@@TheTechMillennial 😂 I just realize that
Good quality content will wait for delivery video👍 😁
Thank you, thank you! 🙏🏽
wanting to get my wife a model s im waiting for my cyber truck and i cant wait to see what thatll be like
Very nice! I’m thinking about a CT myself 👀
Can someone post a link to the buying experience? I can’t find the one mentioned in this video
It's easy, to get a discounted model ordered directly from tesla with less than 4k down payment and a total no more than 20 grand with a ref code.
Quality issues have been sorted and here in Europe we are now getting TESLAs from China and they are very well made. I suggest getting some third party cosmetic work and paint protection done they will sort out any blemishes.
saving up for a model s too. Greets from Germany. i just hit the sub button.
Nice! Cheers 🥂
Thanks!
Fucking hell. This cinematography and editing is underrated.
Thanks!! ✊🏽
Thanks for the info. When is the buying experience video coming out?
Working on it now!
@@TheTechMillennial Thanks! Looking forward to your review
I've ordered the S dual motor fsd while my tri motor fsd cybertruck gets here. i have gots of solar to charge the both at home..
