  • Kattas are traditional check dams built by farmers in Kerala’s Kasaragod district using mud and granite, in December every year. The stored water is used to irrigate crops till the end of May. Farmers will demolish the dams before the onset of monsoon. The check dams also recharge the groundwater table and ensure water availability even during the peak summer months.

Very informative story... Just like "thurangam "another wonder from kasargod... While going through the vedeo we can see the educated farmers of east part of kasargod mainly from kannada brahmins... They can even say the water storage capacity of the katta dam... One farmer clearly explained that it raises the water table... Mini types of these "kattas ""were built in streams and rivulets of northmalabar using wooden planks mud and coconut leaf to irrigate second and third paddy ക്രോപ്.People with that kind of skill i think may not be there now

Simply wonderful. It requires a higher degree of homework to understand and zip the vast subject of Kattas in 8 minutes. Each frame and sentences reflect a high degree of professionalism. A classic work to remember both for the team and for us, the villagers!

Very valuable information..kasaragod district especially yethadka area suffered acute shortage of water during 1970 to1985. But due to the organised ..able leadership of Shri Chandra Shekhar yethadka.. Varanashi Krishna Murthy..and so many others these area attained far reaching changes in water conservation ..all these happened by the inspirations that we are all getting from the local monthly magazine..adike patrike.. under the leadership of Shri . Shree Padre..

Great work by e_channel , Manorama.
First of all I thank u for doing beautiful documentary on "kattas".
This practice has going for more than 70years,but u people recognized it..thanks .
I think government has to intervene with this ,and has to help farmers to build "kattas"..Hope this will become the first step towards that.
Thanks to "team Manorama" ,for your beautiful , photography.
    Reagrds.
    Dr.Venu.

It would be nice if they could build dams with gates to be opened during monsoons and closed afterward, so that they wouldn't have to rebuild them every year!

Instead of destructing the entire check dam, why can't small gates be installed which can be openable in Monsoon, so that full destruction is not needed.
